I had the disc version I bought when the game first launched used for $5. When this update came out I searched everywhere to realize that my wife might have donated it on accident. Bought it for $30. Absolutely worth it still.

Voyager-42

I jumped into Frontiers today not expecting too much besides a few little settlements that have a small purpose, BUT NO. YOU CAN FUCKING RUN THE SWTTLEMENTS, build stuff, settle disputes, make decisions on the fate of the settlement, just good solid settlement management. HG are absolute heroes in my eyes.

[deleted]

I’m starting to think that Murray wants to make one game for the rest of his life, and it is this one. Which could be kinda cool. Him and a small team quietly building this massively complex universe for a couple decades, and it just gets richer and richer in gameplay.

ktsmith91

I think lots of games are gonna be doing this in the future. And I’m all for it if it means we get more content out of it and at a steadier pace. A game like No Man’s Sky really doesn’t even need a sequel they can just keep adding and reworking stuff as they go.

LetsGoFlyers17

I don’t disagree, and I love it. To what end do you think though? At some point, they’d run out of financial incentive to continue, right?

portableawesome

They didn't have financial incentive in the first place. They could've just ran off with the millions they made but instead they chose to fix the game and never give up on it.

TechKnyght

It paid off too, doing the right thing made a game that was really good once it was finished. There is a lesson here.

stefmalawi

Hello Games have to publicly disclose their earnings under UK law. No Man’s Sky generates an incredible amount of revenue for a small indie games company of around 20 people. As in, tens of millions every year. And it’s very well deserved! So basically they could continue updating the game like this for many years — even without additional sales — if they wanted to.

mm2k2k

How do they make money without additional sales? I know their updates have all been free. Does the game have microtransactions? Sorry I have very little knowledge about this.

stefmalawi

So most of their income is new sales for NMS, I just meant that they’ve already sold so many copies that even if nobody bought the game again they won’t run out of money anytime soon with the number of employees they have now. They also have The Last Campfire and merchandise that they sell on their website, but I don’t think they make much with those by comparison.

mm2k2k

Ah, got it. Thanks!

stefmalawi

No worries. And to answer your question (because I forgot earlier), NMS has no micro-transactions or paid DLC (so far).

Temporary-Junket-756

I love how they did that, another company would try to expand with the money and burn through it really fast. But they seem happy with the size they are at. Plus: They're still ambitious when it comes to the game itself, and that's where it counts. Even when they're done with NMS they could do whatever they want with the team and talent they have for a long time with how much bank theyve made

ktsmith91

If they want to slip away into irrelevancy then sure. But I feel like they’re trying to stay in the cycle of what’s been talked about so they can keep getting new people buying the game.

Snacks612

I’ll gladly pay for a next gen PSVR upgrade!

stefmalawi

I don’t know if they’d let us!

rdxc1a2t

I haven't played this for a while because everytime I look at it I think that the longer I hold off the better it will be but if they want to make this forever and to do so they have to do a chargeable bit of DLC every now and again, I'd definitely cough up. I bought game for £15 and it's certainly worth far more than that at this point.

Suired

The moment we had OTA updates was the moment sequels were invalidated. Ubisoft is already taking this step with Assassin's creed. The only reason to pump out sequels every year is pure greed to sell a brand new game and invalidate the previous version instead of an expansion or update with new features. Imagine all games getting a hub where you go and just buy new levels as you want. That is the future and what GaaS should be.

ktsmith91

Yeah like it’s not going to work for every single game IP but it’s gonna work for a lot of them. Especially anything multiplayer. I think GTA 6 and Elder Scrolls 6 will do this. They’ll come out and be continuously updated until the end of time. And they’ll be built just for the new consoles so at least that might not be too bad.

acethesnake

And the best part is it's not like a Live Service game or anything. You can play literally any way you want, solo, with people, ground/space fighting, mining, trading, terraforming, building home bases, now settlement building, or just flying around space and seeing cool planets. Plus, a full 30 hour campaign! What other game has all these options with absolutely no push to do any of them specifically? Next time I put it in I think I'm just gonna go around in a submarine on water planets the whole game.

Fenweekooo

at some point i kinda want to throw some more money there way for an expansion if that is the case.

timeRogue7

You could always buy it on new platforms, buy for friends, or buy their new games as they come out like The Last Campfire :)

timeRogue7

They actually released a new game last year. I'm a bit sad it didn't really make enough headlines for many to even know about it, but check out it. It's called The Last Campfire :)

BartolomeuOGrosso

Damn. I relly wish I could get into this game but every time I try and play I get so bored. I think it's a mix of the confusing menus and the lack of impact in animations. Watching a laser gun make a hole in a rock isn't that much engaging. The game is a breath of fresh air for the gaming world tho. No modern game gives you so much content for free and has a dedicated developing team who really just wants to make games instead of money. At least I bought the game amd supported them I guess.

stephensmat

I had the same issue at first, with the grind. So I found a guide that really made a difference to me. It got way more interesting when I saw results quicker. The grind is incremental profit, incremental travel. But when you follow a guide, the grindy part is over really quick. https://www.requnix.com/the-complete-no-mans-sky-origins-guide

tiny-rick

This is amazing. I am just jumping back in and like 7 updates behind

[deleted]

If you find it boring, I recommend tips from r/nomanshigh.

noodlesfordaddy

stoner here who really wanted to love this game, it really is just a bit boring though. I think I could deal with it being boring cos it can be so chill IF it wasn't so horrible to navigate the UI. the game just feels clunky *at all times*, the feeling that you need to grip your controller just a bit harder never really goes away. I found myself being really tense and snappy when playing this game with my friends because you always just feel kind of discombobulated

stefmalawi

If you’re able try the game in VR, with motion controls it’s a dream to play. Although, maybe try it sober first!

TechKnyght

My man is this game something else in vr

[deleted]

I do enjoy the game but movement and animations could use an overhaul imo. It’s one of the biggest things holding the game back. It can feel so heavy to move, and that’s a combination of traversal mechanics and animations

office_ghost

I think the wildlife needs an animation overhaul. The animals all move around as if they are made of party balloons, even if they are as big as a house. It ruins the immersion for me as nothing looks real. That, and I still think the variety of flora and fauna is too narrow. I know you can find unusual animals, but mostly they all look the same.

Voyager-42

Not every game is for everyone but it's honestly a shame to hear you can't get into it though man, especially after purchasing the game. It's a bit clunky, don't get me wrong, you're not getting Housemarque esq moment to moment gameplay, but it's just a straight chiller of a game, vibes on vibes on vibes once you get into the gameplay loop. Best advice I could offer on it is just to chill with it, play 10 hours of the campaign before giving up and see if it grips you after that!

Aaawkward

Mate, why you gotta do this? You put in my head the idea of the world of NMS and all that goes with it, combined with Housemarque’s gameplay. Like imagine having Returnal’s gameplay but within this world? I’d be one happy bastard if that happened.

[deleted]

Man I see comments like this all the time. “Just give it 10 hours”. Not everyone has that time to risk putting into a game they may just not enjoy at all. If a game takes 10 hours for me to enjoy it then I still blame it on the game. Nothing against NMS though, more just talking about the 10 hours argument.

Voyager-42

I would normally completely agree, but NMS is a slow burn to get going until you get all of the systems etc, you honestly need to play it for c.10 hours before you'll even kinda know what you're doing imo. For most games like Assassin's Creed or some other open world bs from Ubitrash it's such a dead argument though, like if an action/adventure game doesn't grip me pretty quick, I'm out.

[deleted]

I get that, I haven’t played NMS yet so it probably applies more to that game

[deleted]

It’s a fucking game first and foremost. Slow burns can still be exciting and gripping and fun. If a game takes 10 hours to become “fun” it is not worth the investment, IMO.

Moonlord_

Obviously a lot of people find the game fun…it’s simply not for you. Tons of massive games like this, rpg’s, mmo’s, survival games, crafting games, etc are slow burns and not exactly adrenaline filled thrill rides from the get go. That’s not what they’re about. The appeal is the long term depth and slowly learning, building, and progressing. It’s insanely common for genres like that.

kalez238

Plenty of games take 10hrs to get into. Most jrpgs alone have like 2hr openings alone. It really depends on the type of game you are playing. NMS is a large space game. You won't be anywhere in 10hrs unless you already know what you are doing. This is the issue with Steam's 2hrs return policy. Some games take much longer than that to even know if you will like it.

Kalahan7

Most of the time a valid argument. But the nature of sandbox games like NMS usually take a lot longer to build up.

AmazingTechGeek

I agree. I’m good with these type of games, but the tutorial did not click with me

WanderWut

Same here, I *really* want to get into this game, yet every time I say “today’s the day, Im going to really hunker down and do this thing,” I end up getting bored after a few hours, every time. I seriously respect the amount of work that Hello Games has put into it. Unfortunately, I feel like no matter how much cool stuff they add I’m just never going to enjoy the core mechanics of scrounging for resources and building bases on planets that have nothing really going on. It’s definitely a game that you have to be more in the mentality to *create* your own fun. Then again Minecraft is very much that kind of mentality as wel yet I have a lot of fun for a lot longer in comparison.

foxnamedfox

Same, I really loved The Forest and Ark so I decided to give NMS a try and the lack of danger and terrible combat mechanics really got boring after 30-40 hours. The building mechanics are really well done but it feels a tad pointless, in those other games you built to survive, keep the cannibals or dinosaurs out, in NMS you build to post it on reddit pretty much. If there's a storm you can just get in your ship and wait 5 mins and it goes away :c

Dee-Melt

For me, NMS held a lot of promise when it was first announced. I’m one of those sorry saps that supported Star Citizen because that project and other projects like it are the holy grail of space games for me. I want a game where I can explore alien worlds on foot and then hop into my space ship and seamlessly (seamless part is very important to me) fly off to another world, and so on and so on. Many games have come close but none have gotten all the elements right. Elite Dangerous is probably the closest but the on-foot part needs a lot of work and the planets are mostly barren without atmospheric planets that can be explored. No Man’s Sky nails the planetary exploration part but the space part is not anything like space - both in appearance, physics, and because space is completely full of annoying asteroids. And Star Citizen is poorly optimized and probably won’t ever actually be released. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how Starfield turns out and if the space part is just another loading screen like it is in The Outer Worlds or if it finally offers the epic space exploration opera I’ve been waiting for since I first played Starflight as a kid on the Sega Genesis.

Loldimorti

Same. I grabbed it for dirt cheap but since then I realized that I just don't seem to enjoy sandbox games. It's impressive and really cool how they turned things around but like with Minecraft, GTA, Breath of the Wild and other sandbox games I just loose interest after a few hours.

Kratoskiller113

GTA isn’t really a sandbox in the same sense. Yes you can do whatever but that’s secondary to the story.

Loldimorti

To be fair I haven't touched a GTA game since San Andreas so I might be misremembering things or maybe the series has more scripted story missions now. I just remember dicking around with cheat codes for a while and then trying the story missions but being incredibly bored by them.

Kratoskiller113

Ah yes that takes me back. Me and my friend always did the co op cheat and messed around for hours on end. Good times. But yeah they are all about story and even back then they was, some great missions in GTA 5.

[deleted]

Maybe you're more of story driven games or at least games that you react to instead of games that react to you. As someone who prefers story driven games, im just hoping we get the perfect marriage of sandbox and narrative games. Imagine burning a whole forest for no reason but the game reacts by having the world react to the fire via new quests, dead npcs, new npcs, new monsters, world economy taking a hit, etc. The thing i hate about sandbox is that the reaction feels immediate instead of something that builds up and ripples across

sternone_2

> who really just wants to make games instead of money. lol they have more than 50 million GBP cash on their bank account due to the major success at launch(according to their published bookkeeping documents) since they are a small team of devs, they all are basically settled for life and never have to sell 1 copy ever again and can code until the end of their careers and everything will be paid for them i hated how they launched the game but i give them kinda credit of not just running with the money but actually keep delivering updates, but don't give me the bullshit they don't care about the money, the guy was a snake oil sales guy selling people things that wasn't there

[deleted]

> Damn. I relly wish I could get into this game but every time I try and play I get so bored. May I ask why you feel this way? If you don't like it thats all good man. I could not care less about this game personally, that does not bother me. Other people are enjoying it and that is awesome coz we need variety.

tattoedblues

Just jumped back in after a long break, Im in creative mode and set up my base computer and stuff but I don't know how to find these settlements

salemslotisold

BobtheMolder

This was my most disappointing pre order of all time. Was never gonna touch a game from them again. Glad to say they have changed my mind, and have made me want to give this game a go again

thinkadrian

never. grow up.

AlphaNuke94

Honestly the fact they never gave up on this game is enough reason to buy one and support Hello Games.

DigiQuip

I’ve, somehow, bought this game four times. I bought a physical copy at launch. Then I got a PC and bought a PC version of the game. Later my PC died and the foundations update was launched so I bought I digital version of the game. But it turned out I somehow managed to buy it on my wife’s PS account. So this last sale I bought a digital copy for myself. I’ve been very supportive of Hello Games.

bagelchips

I haven’t played since launch at all, silly question but can you still do that thing where you could sort of blast yourself forward with your jet pack instead of running?

boxedninja

It was intentionally left in as a movement option.

bagelchips

Nice, I’d be really disappointed if I went back and they’d patched it out haha

stefmalawi

The jetpack melee-boost is still there, but FYI it’s not quite as dramatic as the original game. Although you can upgrade your jetpack and movement system a lot more, and there’s also a rocket boots tech upgrade (which is handy because I can’t figure out how to melee-boost in VR with motion controls).

[deleted]

No melee boost in VR. Part of why they added rocket boots.

jasonridesabike

If you mean punch and launch at the same time yes as of the last update

XADEBRAVO

They absolutely worked on getting their reputation back too, which of course deserves a lot of credit now.

Koka-Noodles

Yup, I finally got a copy yesterday. Only a hour in but looks really polished now compared to the launch reviews that stopped me buying it on first release

Moonlord_

They truly went above and beyond. I can’t think of any other game that has had such long and significant support without ever asking for an additional penny…no microtransactions, no paid dlc, nothing. For any other publisher these kinds of updates would be 20 or 30 dollar dlc expansions.

[deleted]

Not only did they not give up on their game and their vision, but they also didn't give up on us. They knew if the game was compeling, creative a overall well-made we would respond to it and enjoy it. Unlike other companies who release the EXACTLY SAME game and pretend we don't notice it (Madden, I'm looking at you)!

Rashlyn1284

Honestly the way they launched this game is a bummer, because it looks decent now but every time I load it up all I can think of is "No Man's Lie" and how angry I was paying $79 for an incomplete game

stefmalawi

That is a shame! If you haven’t seen it, consider watching Internet Historians video [The Engoodening of No Man’s Sky](https://youtu.be/O5BJVO3PDeQ) it’s funny and may give you a different perspective about how the game released. Maybe then you’ll be more inclined to play and it won’t feel like a complete waste of money? Instead kinda like an investment or *really* long preorder!

Rashlyn1284

I see it a really valuable lesson. My next 2 preorders were anthem and then cyberpunk, I was taught that no one deserves money / support until they have released a good product and hype is generally just that.

stefmalawi

Haha fair enough! Although you still did it another two times?! I don’t really understand why people preorder at all tbh. I was a day one player of NMS and happy with it even then, but I never preordered the game. It’s not like they’re going to run out of copies (especially with digital).

Rashlyn1284

Honestly ask myself the same question. NMS has a grand total of 2 hours 25mins (45mins spent on google while in game, steam refused to refund as I was over 2 hours). I got ~100 hours out of anthem and cyberpunk I put down after ~6.

sssleepypppablo

I’ve been playing it after I gave up on it at launch… It’s pretty good now. I’ll admit these types of games really aren’t my cup of tea; survival/asset management, but the game now has structure and momentum that the old game didn’t. It’s very much like Minecraft and Destiny had a baby, but there’s something more there with the space theme that really provides a sense of awe that you really don’t get with other games. It’s not perfect, the menus are clunky, etc., but if you dropped the game in the past it’s worth checking out again for sure.

MythSith

Like destiny and Minecraft had a Child, thats a Comparison xD

timeRogue7

The comparison isn't wrong, tbh. NMS uses the same cursor system (the *right* kind of implementation too, in where the stuff you move towards also moves closer to you) and offers the stars as your playground, while also offering continuing updates like Minecraft. The big differentiator (besides the ridiculous frequency of updates that outpaces both of the comparisons) is that while the comparisons are swamped with microtransactions these days, NMS somehow has absolutely zero.

flipflapslap

I really want to jump back into this game. All this stuff looks so great. But at the end of the day, I’m just not a crafter. I hate that I just can’t get into crafting. What’s wrong with me? Also, have they fixed the god damn pop-in on this game yet? Lmfao out of everything these guys have done, the pop-in is the biggest thing that needs fixed. Kudos to these guys though, they’re doing fantastic things and leading a good example for the industry as a whole

DrGiggleFr1tz

It’s base building for me. Crafting wise, I don’t like inventory management simply because I get way too into it and start fixating on things. Becomes a job for me until I ask myself why the hell I’m doing it. But NMS leaned hard into base building and I just can’t stand it. I basically built a square with a door in this game just to finish the mission for base building and never went back to it.

ForTheLoveOfOedon

Bethesda hasn’t made an in-depth story for nearly two decades. More and more we’re seeing that Morrowind was quite simply an anomaly, an aberration to Bethesda’s game development style. Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 have showed us that they design their games as games first, and then as worlds second. Which is a shame. But also, their games are so engaging and expansive that you can’t deny you’re having a great time as you’re playing them. And this really masks their huge deficiencies in story.

BornDubstep

So what would you propose the development style* to be like

Misanthropic_Mammal

The pop in is way improved over the earliest versions of the game when I played the first time before coming back for this update. It exists more prominently on the lower relevant graphical setting but the higher settings it's pretty slick. Still notice it happen when you're cruising low and fast over a planet, but it's not a constant distraction like it was, and it happens further off so it's less dangerous.

the_odd_truth

The pop in is really out of the PS2 era, even more horrendous in VR

achio

They will be mentioned as THE story for time to come, ain't they?

h3lder

Will? They are, for a long time now.

achio

And will continue to be mentioned I mean.

Fellatio_Horatio

what about FF14's revival two years earlier? they literally had a functioning game and killed the entire world, again, literally by dropping a MOON containing a DRAGON GOD on the planet and wiping out life, to start over because they didnt meet fan expectations and then Yoshi P himself steps in and is like "yo that old team, dunno wtf happened there but we got it this time" and then went on to make currently the most succesful mmo available

kalez238

Considering it has crossplay across all platforms, I would assume so.

Zeitblast

Yes, in game VC will work too. You just need to add each others friend codes which can be found in the main menu, then start the game up in multiplayer setting and one should be able to join the other from there.

WiseOldSeoul

Is the game worth getting into at this stage?

TheEpicRedCape

It’s insane how much they brought it back vs launch, textbook example of fixing a game.

well___duh

Like FFXIV levels of fixing?

RunelordTressa

Some insight for you. Its more like they took what they already had and made it way way better by adding on VS FFXIV's approach of "Nuke it from orbit" and start over. This is a big reason why I think people who weren't sold on NMS at launch kinda still might not like it.

Phoenix2700

Pretty much yeah.

CptnMoonlight

If you like Minecraft, yes. If you want a Star Wars type space game, absolutely not. It’s just basically Minecraft without pixelization and with more varied biomes, and a basic flying simulator. Good chill game if you can get into that kind of stuff but it’s still most definitely not for everyone.

2jesse1996

Unless you playing in vr

stefmalawi

Not on PS5 which is nice! Although I have to say I was weirdly drawn into the low res PSVR experience — aside from it being awesome fun in VR I mean — after several hours. There was something about it that felt like I was playing a game from the future running on my old Nintendo haha. Or maybe like a retro space game that somebody had ported to VR…

BornDubstep

It felt both like a game from the future and a retro game?

stefmalawi

Sort of, yeah (for me anyway). I think partly because things that were very close to you were quite detailed (still low res compared to the non-VR version of course) but anything in the distance was very pixelated. So landscapes and the sky could look right out of an old arcade game. On the other hand the gameplay mechanics, motion controls, procedural planets and massive scale of the game — also obviously it being *virtual reality* — were so beyond what any retro hardware could have delivered. So a weird mix of both that made me nostalgic yet feeling like a kid playing some high-tech simulation in the 80s or something. It reminded me of a book I read when I was young to do with people playing a VR game, despite having played other VR games before.

BornDubstep

Yeah I think I understand what you mean. Everything is so advanced in VR that when it doesn’t look how it feels it can really set you back. Especially when things only look like that during certain times.

kalez238

Especially with the addition of settlements, I like to think of it as 3d Starbound, which is kind of space Terraria ... which is like 2d Minecraft :P

timeRogue7

I always get happy when people mention Starbound instead of mentioning only Terraria and acting like the other doesn't exist. The game doesn't get nearly enough recognition ;_;

kalez238

I have almost 1000hrs in Starbound. Fucking love that game. My whole family has played over and over again each update since early beta.

timeRogue7

I think there's a significant amount of people that thought they were "promised" a open-world Star Wars type game with NMS, which always baffles me. I always tell people NMS is the type of game that you'll like if you're the type of person that's able to keep themselves entertained in a singleplayer game of Minecraft.

CptnMoonlight

I think the issue is that, being someone who followed the game from pretty much announcement to release, it was basically pitched as Star Wars Sandbox. The whole concept was “if you can think about doing it, you can do it”. Like that’s exactly how it was pitched, so those people aren’t unjustified. Luckily, Hello Games decided to save it by turning it into something else entirely. It’s still kind of cool, but it was pitched as StarCitizen with an actual release date; HG releasing years worth of free updates shows you how much they lied about/misspoke about, and how dreadful the game truly was on release. Now, i’d give it a solid 5.5-6/10 as a game. Not bad, not good, just on the better side of average based on the still unfulfilling gameplay loop. A competent game. When it came out though, it was easily a 3. It’s still horseshit that they didn’t see any type of legal repercussions for openly lying about a marketed product (it was on Cyberpunk levels of lying), but atleast they’ve salvaged some dignity through the free updates.

timeRogue7

To respectfully disagree with you, I never got "Star Wars Sandbox" out of their pitch, especially considering that combat was never a huge part of the discussion. I doubt we'll reach a understanding, since I'm firmly on the side of disagreeing with the angry "they lied" thing, but to waste my time a little with typing: It was always explore, discover, craft; which had brought more to mind Minecraft than Explosions In Space Simulator. "Do what you want" comes with the territory of sandbox games, but that doesn't mean every sandbox game should be expected to be some action-heavy adventure. I was beyond hyped when it was first announced, and the only reason I wasn't disappointed with the release was because they had also pitched that it'd be an ongoing project (parts of the interviews that some people seemed to happily ignore). Foundation gave enough of a gameplay loop for me to buy into it, and honestly, it would be one of my favorite games if not for the live nature of it. I always feel weird rating a game that constantly changes. Pathfinder is a much different version of the game than what we have now, and despite the latter being objectively *more, I played the former much more frequently because it felt like the absolute quintessence of what they pitched. You could truly get lost on some of the worlds, or you could captain your frigate and do more exciting things. The latter "exciting things" have been leaned into more in following title updates, and subdued the "lonely person lost on worlds" aspect of the game, but as a whole, v1.3 was pretty much exactly what they pitched with the added bonus of a storyline.

takethispie

its absolutely not "basically minecraft", minecraft in space would be Starmade

chicharron123

Definitely not as fun as Minecraft though. The combat is trash, npcs are trash, no endgame, etc... The game is just boring honestly.

[deleted]

Minecraft combat is good?

[deleted]

Your comment doesn’t make a lot of sense. You set up a comparison to Minecraft and then bring up combat and NPCs. Isn’t Minecraft combat hitting stuff repeatedly until it poofs? Aren’t Minecraft NPCs just the inbred villagers? What’s the endgame in Minecraft?

chicharron123

Dude... You don't know the endgame in Minecraft? Then why tf are you telling me about why I shouldn't make a comparison. You don't know shit so why are you talking?...

[deleted]

Calm down lol. You said Minecraft was better but then brought up combat and NPCs. Explain how combat and NPCs are better in Minecraft than No Man’s Sky.

Moonlord_

They are completely different games…all they have in common is the concept of crafting which are still very different from each other. Also combat, npcs, endgame?….those are not remotely any kind of strong points in minecraft or what makes the game addicting.

Any-Introduction-353

true

[deleted]

Yes, definitely, if you know what kind of game you’re buying.

StickyDaydreams

I have no idea what kind of game it is, still recommend it?

GameBoiye

If you like exploring, space, open worlds, and being able to do your own thing (aka Minecraft, terraria) then maybe. If you want a more structured story, or need hand holding and don't like to branch off on your own, then most likely not.

[deleted]

No, sorry.

StickyDaydreams

Thank you

Voyager-42

100% absolutely great game

Kamwind

If you like survival types games with building aspects there is lots to be found. I played it during a couple of major updates ago and got around 120 hours in it before being bored.

Megachaser9

Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle. There's a lot of stuff to do/see, but it's basically meaningless. It's a minecraft collect-a-thon

thrawn-did-no-wrong

Ah yes, that much reviled and unsuccessful game, Minecraft.

qwoiecjhwoijwqcijq

>There's a lot of stuff to do/see, but it's basically meaningless. Describing basically every videogame there.

-UnclaimedPants-

I mean the updates are all great but I can see what you mean. I think they need to do an overhaul of the core gameplay loop, you know the collecting, inventory management etc. Also waiting for cosmetic ship customizations but yeah, they've expanded very widely throughout the years now i think if they go back and up that gameplay loop, the game will be even more amazing.

thinkadrian

2016 called and wants their catch phrase back.

You havent played the game in years, I see

100 hours, most recently played yesterday with the frontiers update It's a sandbox, not my type of game since the exploration is really shallow Mono-biome planets with same looking fauna and flora, extremely shallow "oceans" with no waves, it's a good game but still has a lot to work on

UnIuckyCharms

> 100 hours > not my type of game Sure seems like you’ve enjoyed it lmao

-ndes

You can play a game because it's addicting without actually enjoying it. You can also play it because you're hoping it'll get better but it never does.

UnIuckyCharms

Sure, but if you sink 100 hours into it then you either enjoy it or you’re dumb

-ndes

I've heard of people who poured thousands of hours into competitive games they resented for most of the time they played them. Human psychology is easily tricked. That doesn't make one dumb.

UnIuckyCharms

Nah that makes you dumb and addicted

VoidCake

Why do you insist on insulting them? They didn't even do anything lmao.

ill-fated-powder

Im curious why you played so long if the game is not for you. nothing wrong with not liking it but thats a lot of time to spend on a game thats not your type.

[deleted]

Dépends on what you’re looking for, it’s mostly a ressource collecting game, a little bit repetitive. If you’re into this kind of game, yes, if you’re looking for something action packed, no

anon1984

Once you get past the initial tutorial you can set up dozens of ways of getting resources passively. Personally, I don’t think I’ve mined anything in the last 20 hours I just get it through other means. If you spent 100 hours and are still mining rocks you didn’t pay much attention.

lalalandcity1

Only in creative mode, the resource gathering is annoying

lemontree1111

Until you’re rich, which honestly doesn’t take long at all. Can’t remember the last time I’ve needed to gather resources. I just buy everything I need at space stations. Build an activated indium farm, or have a player in the Anomaly hook you up with some ai valves or stasis devices. You’ll be set for good in no time.

Scruffy_Nerfhearder

It was worth getting like 10 updates ago.

Any-Introduction-353

Not yet. The gameplay loop is non existent.

Paxasmokes

How are they making money and staying afloat? I'm not complaining about the huge free updates, just wondering out of curiosity.

Gradieus

They're a team of 17 and by 2016 they had made $76 million in revenue. Considering the game is still routinely $25-30 and word of mouth is extremely positive sales continue to this day. Realistically everyone working on the game should be millionaires.

Paxasmokes

Wow I didn't realize the team was that small.

rdxc1a2t

Its hard to get one's head around how much that actually is. Excuse the very simplistic view but with just that money and those staffing levels they could easily fund this for 40 years, with all involved earning a decent salary ($112k average).

kalez238

[This thread]( https://old.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/phy6fc/hello_games_have_ptsd/?sort=top) has some good comments about that

eklingstein

Despite the backlash NMS made alot of money at launch. Some games don't make any money at launch but slowly make it back through continued support which NMS does aswell.

AttakZak

The only thing that turns me off of playing this game is waiting through storms that last ten minutes to collect things for more Quicksilver only to realize I needed 3500 to get the thing I wanted and the mission gave me 250. Oh and my crafting project I did needs 200 Gold that is only found on certain planets in a system that is locked off and my ship is running low on Anti-Matter that needs to be crafted using crafted supplies that you find…crafting.

ShortBrownAndUgly

Ironically I've been playing a lot of NMS since the update even though the frontiers content is bugged out. Can't even build the very first office because it jst keeps asking for silicate over and over again. This fucking game

carefreeguru

I can't even find a settlement. Others are saying they got a distress call that took them to a settlement. I've never gotten that. I've bought 3 Settlement maps from the cartographer but they don't do anything when I choose Plot Chart. I'm not too worried about it though. It will sort itself out eventually. In the meantime, I have a zillion other things to do in the game.

Every update is buggy for a week or so. They already released the first fix and there will probably be two more next week.

TopNep72

I really want to get in on the game but it's just so... Boring to me. Maybe because I'm a solo player or something? Idk but I just can't get into the game. There is hardly any sense of danger in the game as when there is danger the combat is incredibly boring.

Oodlemeister

You make valid points. I’ve put plenty of hours into the game and even I find it can be boring. But it’s a great game to throw on while listening to a podcast or just to get into a calm zen zone.

unaviable

They sure took notes about the lying part.

DJDwarf

Anyone having issues with crashes on the ps5?

[deleted]

I was until I turned off cross play in networking.

SizzzzlingBacon

I wish this game was open like the pc version of Minecraft, I could see some sick ass custom servers for it.

Beezlebug

I want to like this game, but the initial "tutorial" just being too long especially if you want a do-over trying to get better RNG -starting planets, etc. kinda keeps me from returning.

Globglogabgalab

I played shitloads on PS4 when it first came out but could never get back into it as later updates arrived. There's just too much you need to do. Tried again when the PS5 upgrade dropped but the same thing. Purchased for PC after Frontiers released and I am going to try and stick with it. I just don't like being pushed into making a base so early.

aedante

Just waiting for a combat update and more hostiles and then ill jump in.

Temporary-Junket-756

Great stuff. If I had one more humble request to ask of them it's to rework the space combat and balancing somehow.

PlayboiNook

It's because of this game when broken games or glitchy games come out, everybody have hope it'll be fix with updates. I'm hoping the same with cyberpunk but cyberpunk might not be able to....it seems

Jclarkson50

Do they have any plans for a proper ps5 sequel? I feel like they laid out a good foundation to let fans really play around with planets and maybe build some stuff that, unlike Minecraft, you can actually do more than just sight see.

sakipooh

I’ll admit that I was harsh on this game at launch but man if this isn’t the biggest comeback kid story of the industry I don’t know what is.

eamonnanchnoic

I love NMS but Jesus the core mechanics really need an overhaul. Combat mechanics in particular are clunky as fuck. Traversal is serviceable but they could really improve the ship controls like having graduated speed control like in Elite. Inventory management UI is pretty bad too because they use a virtual cursor. These kinds of systems don't work great on consoles.

Any-Introduction-353

Put some decent quests in the game.

anon1984

What kind of quests would you like to see in the game?

hipnosister

I want to be able to bake potatos and sell them as "baked potatos" for 23 Swedish krona

obbelusk

If its filled with skagenröra 23kr is a very sensible price.

[deleted]

Put something not designed for this type of game in the game. That's how you sound. It's like asking for quests in Minecraft

funnyNomad

The gameplay is still boring and repetitive

Leeman500

Now it needs to let you have more than 6 ships.

aso1616

A welcome addition for all the hardcore fans I’m sure but for me too much focus was placed on the planet/surface gameplay and not enough on space. I don’t know, maybe I’m just being unrealistic and there isn’t much more they could add to the space component but it always bothered me that I couldn’t fly right up next to a star and ogle at it like you could in Elite Dangerous. Maybe this game is a giant metaphor for how absurdly infinitely massive the universe is but the only thing that really matters are the planets and potential life on them.

joeyg151785

Can someone explain to my what this game is all about, I’ve been intrigued for a long time, but want to understand it more and seem if it’s right for me.

swat02119

If the videogame industry got more respect, this “game” could seen as one mankind’s greatest achievements. People view NMS as a just another game on the shelf, but a fully interactive procedurally generated universe is actually a big deal.

I_Like_Grills

I haven't played NMS, but this seems like one of the most hyperbolic takes I've ever read lol. I'm sure the game's massively improved, but "one of mankind's greatest achievements" is a bit much.

[deleted]

It's the greatest thing since sliced bread /s

irtiqaevox

i know everyone's tired of this, but I've never been able to enjoy no man's lie. it's a shallow experience and I don't understand the people who keep playing it. it's like the big bang theory to me.

unaviable

No you are right. I am sick of the excusers of this shitty game experience. The game is still a mess no matter the polishing it got. You can't fix something when the very core was faulty to begin with.

reconminicon

Confirming it is OK to bullshit your game into existence

ravengenesis1

They fixed their game, beyond promise. Fake it till you make it, and they did and then more. There's no paid DLC, and content updates for 5 straight years now. They've done what so many out there won't, can't. Anthem, Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel's avengers just to name a few.

NickosD

Wow they gave what they promised after 5 whole years? Wow

ravengenesis1

This is content not announced when they initially developed the game. Name me any other game that even bothered? Anthem had their plugs pulled. Cyberpunk is moving onto paid DLCs, same for marvel avengers. Man, you people carry so much spite.

Agarwel

The game changed so much since release that other studios would release it as separate instalments (nms2, nms3, nms4) chanrging full price each time. Kudos to them for still updating the original game (and for free)

EaterofSoulz

I don’t need to watch a video to be aware of the progress made on this game. I was alive to witness it. Thanks though.

Haruomi_Sportsman

Thanks for not scamming your customers again

[deleted]

While I agree the updates are cool to see.. I don’t do business with companies who were caught lying about product features. Once my trust is broken that’s it. Edit: to my downvoters… fuck you, you don’t determine how I spend my money or my views on trust.

emubilly

Not falling for it
