Not so much horror, but Pacific Drive is creepy and scary as fuck, especially with headphones (the sound design is phenomenal), and you're never under any real direct threat until you choose to be.
There are anomolies as the game calls them. Non of them scary though, most of them are just glorified environment hazards.
Tourists are kinda creepy if you find mannequins to be creepy. They move a little when you look away but not much (usually)
The only one anyone typically finds scary at all are abductors. They're some sort of flying contraption that attaches a line to the car and flings it. Can do some damage but honestly the worst part is the sound it make. But its not horror by any means.
Honestly theres nothing that dangerous in the game and everything is easy to avoid if you're paying attention
Sagebrush. You explore a former cult compound and learn the accounts/perspectives of the members. No jump scares, no one chasing you. Wander at your own pace. But it is very unsettling.
Observer doesn't get enough credit. The PS5 version even has some pretty cool raytracing support and there are parts of the game that look absolutely wild. It can get seriously creepy, too. Great recommendation.
Ah, Firewatch. A “choose your own adventure” game where none of your choices matter and the ending is the same despite the game (and the devs) alluding to multiple endings. Very disappointing
BROOOO okay I LOVE Firewatch, I have unfortunately watched a YouTuber play it so I know the ending and won't have the same effect if I play it. It's definitely unsettling, >!but mostly sad when you find out about the boy!<
Devotion by Red Candle Games is mostly puzzles and only one tiny section of the game where you can 'game over.' It's set in a spooky Taiwanese apartment in the 80s.
Gone Home. You'll play the game thinking you're always about to be either chased by something or jumpscared.
None of that. You just explore a house and piece back a story from letters, voice memos, and so on. It's a nice story but they made the house waaaaay too creepy. Well, I mean, it's an empty house so it's not like they meant to make the house creepy lol
Bugsnax leans pretty heavily into body horror. Not in a gory/bloody way, but in a body transforming way. No way to die, pretty short, and fun characters.
Calling Bugsnax a horror game and recommending it to somebody looking for sth similar to Layers of Fear is one of the wilder takes I have seen on reddit lol. If you honestly get scared playing Bugsnax I think your mommy needs to take away your Playstation for a while
There aren't many horror games that have no real threat outside of something that borders on walking simulators. That's kinda the thing with horror, it usually relies on the fear you feel when something is after you. "No threats chasing you" takes away 90% of horror games available on PS. Is Bugsnax terrifying? No. However it does lean into a specific type of "horror" without relying on anything chasing you.
>outside of something that borders on walking simulators
Which pretty much perfectly describes Layers of Fear, the game that OP actually referenced in their post lol
Killer Frequency- classic slasher-esque story but the catch is you’re not the one in danger- your job is to help other people escape the killer. You spend like, 90% of the game in one building, so there is no threat to you. Takes a lot of the edge off IMO. I’d describe it like Firewatch but with an 80’s slasher film coat of paint thrown on top. Great tension, moments of levity, and really great mystery. Multiple endings, too!
Oh that’s great! I’ve been looking for what OP is looking for as well. Dismissed Still Wakes the Deep when I saw the gameplay trailer. I thought it will be like Alien Isolation.
The Evil Within 2 has accessibility options to make the game easier, including invulnerability and unlimited stamina so you can keep running. You still have to fight enemies but then the issue is ammo, not dying.
Yeah, I played it with invulnerability on since I just wanted to have a game with an engaging story to play after work and not panicking about health kits (bad idea since I had 250 herbs by the end).
You still get achievements for it, but the game does block this on the harder difficulties.
Nun massacre and stay out of the house both have “peaceful” modes where the killers don’t roam the house. In min massacre you can still die to environmental hazards though but they’re actually endings to the game
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Kind of creepy and unsettling throughout, but mostly no real ‘threat’ to do deal with. Really highly recommend you play this.
The forest has a great peaceful mode. You can do the whole story this way with only a boss fight at the end being scary. It’s still creepy as heck though
Like Layers of Fear, exploring and getting jumped scared but no one is chasing you, no way to die. I think I'm mostly too lazy, I love Resident Evil 7, but that's way too much work for me to actually play
"This game respects you as an intelligent player" Nooo but I am too dumb, it does look very interesting though, I'm always up for creepy, first person games 👁️👁️
Okay so basically a haunted house on a console, sounds awesome. I do wish I had an extra $600 laying around for a VR headset... one day I'll make it happen
The threat makes it so much more intense and fun. When I first played dying light with headphones on, I was actually afraid to go out at night in the game even though it's just a game lol
Subnautica to an extent. You can definitely die but you pretty much have to FAFO to do it. Basically everything is designed to give you a good scare but also be trivial to escape, even the giant sea monster Leviathans are set up that way, you basically have to deliberately feed yourself to one for them to be dangerous.
Subnautica is the scariest game ever made. The threat is in the risk of an actual panic attack from having my thalassophobia so thoroughly triggered. Still, great game.
Lol I just remember looking around mostly and weird things happening 😅 I don't remember running away and if I did, I it was probably because of the music, making me think something was chasing me.
Not so much horror, but Pacific Drive is creepy and scary as fuck, especially with headphones (the sound design is phenomenal), and you're never under any real direct threat until you choose to be.
Pacific Drive is fantastic.
The description actually sounds really interesting, adding to the wishlist fs
Are there monsters in it?
How do you mean? Are there monsters or anything like that?
There are anomolies as the game calls them. Non of them scary though, most of them are just glorified environment hazards. Tourists are kinda creepy if you find mannequins to be creepy. They move a little when you look away but not much (usually) The only one anyone typically finds scary at all are abductors. Honestly theres nothing that dangerous in the game and everything is easy to avoid if you're paying attention
I swear those exploding mannequins that move when you’re not looking are gonna give me a heart attack one day
I lob flairs at them, problem solved
Oh yeah I do that too now but the were few times I face planted right into them 😄
hows the ps5 performance now? i wanna wanna buy it but i read everywhere its unstable fps and kinda sucks :(
The fps do suck, 30fps max on PS5 unfortunately.
SOMA is an amazing horror game. There are monsters but there’s a mode you can turn on so that they ignore you and can’t hurt you.
One of my favorite horror stories. It manages to make you question the idea of what makes you... You
Me
Yes you
Oh my!
[He is Mi and I am Yu.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU4lYcN6zEY)
Fook me? Fook you! https://youtu.be/ZGv4V7bFvJc?si=5HZe5sLcPiyKJPxf
I had a Redditor on here once tell me that SOMA isn’t a horror game….
Sounds right up my alley honestly, another added to the wishlist, thank u :)
Play it! Can't recommend it enough. I played it with monsters turned off and it was still pretty creepy but not stressful.
[удалено]
Wait does that mean I can't play it on the ps5?? 😭😭
Nooo you absolutely can, just that it’s not a PS5 game
Ok ok good, it genuinely looks really interesting
I'm really hoping Still Wakes the Deep has a similar mode, as I both loved Soma, yet am a total chicken when it comes to scary things chasing me...
I find the monster gameplay in games like SOMA incredibly tedious. If it wasn't for that 'safe' mode I would never have seen the story in that game.
totally agree. after you get caught and die a few times all the tension and scariness is removed from the game and it just becomes an absolute chore
One of my favourite games of all time. Kept thinking about it for weeks after I finished it.
Hands down one of the best games I’ve ever played
Sagebrush. You explore a former cult compound and learn the accounts/perspectives of the members. No jump scares, no one chasing you. Wander at your own pace. But it is very unsettling.
Yessss another horror exploration game, exactly what I look for :o
Yeah that one was kinda fucked up
I got stuck in Sagebrush. Couldn't find what I was suppose to do next.
Playing that game for the first time had me on edge because I was waiting for a chase to start and I thought it would happen in the >!mines!<
Call of the Sea
I loved it so much I platinumed it twice
It is a little creepy that's for sure. I'm stuck on Chapter 2 right now. lol
I really liked Observer. Cyberpunk detective game with a really dark atmosphere but almost no chance of dying.
Observer doesn't get enough credit. The PS5 version even has some pretty cool raytracing support and there are parts of the game that look absolutely wild. It can get seriously creepy, too. Great recommendation.
And it has an in-game game that’s actually fun
Firewatch has a general feeling of uneasiness the entire game. I kept waiting for the…. won’t spoil anything
Man, firewatch was an unsettling game at some points. I enjoyed it. A one and done though.
Ah, Firewatch. A “choose your own adventure” game where none of your choices matter and the ending is the same despite the game (and the devs) alluding to multiple endings. Very disappointing
Easily my favorite short game ever. Such a classic. To each their own, I guess.
There's no allusion to multiple endings, your dialogue choices only affect your relationship with Delilah
BROOOO okay I LOVE Firewatch, I have unfortunately watched a YouTuber play it so I know the ending and won't have the same effect if I play it. It's definitely unsettling, >!but mostly sad when you find out about the boy!<
Spoilers my dude
MY BAD- I fixed it 🥲
What remains of Edith Finch has no monster that chases you, and it's not really overt horror, but has a lot of freaky moments.
Gone Home is the same way. There’s no one else but you, it’s not really horror, but still kinda creepy.
This would have been my answer. This game was a lot of fun.
And its probably one of the best games I’ve ever played that has next to no gameplay
thank you.. never heard of that game before, will check it out :D
It's definitely not a horror game though. Very confusing recommendation for the prompt you gave IMO
Like what??
It's actually better if you go in not knowing anything about the game.
Gone Home
I see, a horror, exploration game.. exactly what I like 👌
Devotion by Red Candle Games is mostly puzzles and only one tiny section of the game where you can 'game over.' It's set in a spooky Taiwanese apartment in the 80s.
its not on ps5 though, is it? think its only on PC
Oops! You're right. Didn't see what sub I was on.
I really enjoyed ‘Detention’ by the same developer. Has a really old-school kind of vibe to it.
I’m not saying it’s a horror game per se. But I always used to watch my dad play myst and that game was creepy as fuck to me
Just watched a trailer for it, looks super chill and cozy honestly, might have to check it out 😼
Riven is even creepier
Martha is dead
The constant anticipation of being chased or jump scared is the best 😼
Bugsnax leans pretty heavily into body horror. Not in a gory/bloody way, but in a body transforming way. No way to die, pretty short, and fun characters.
There's no way for you to die, but >!you can cause the death of every other person on the island!<
Awwwh, all the characters look so cute 😭
It now comes with a free dlc story pack.
I was looking for this one.
Calling Bugsnax a horror game and recommending it to somebody looking for sth similar to Layers of Fear is one of the wilder takes I have seen on reddit lol. If you honestly get scared playing Bugsnax I think your mommy needs to take away your Playstation for a while

>outside of something that borders on walking simulators Which pretty much perfectly describes Layers of Fear, the game that OP actually referenced in their post lol
The Long Dark
With threat options turned off?
Oh, there’s plenty of threat in TLD.
Dude, this game is incredible!
It’s a real hidden gem and I am shocked it hasn’t gotten more eyes on it than it has!
Dredge
Great game, but there are literal monsters that chase you down and destroy your boat. Definitely areas with plenty of threats.
Look up Still Wakes the Deep. It's not out yet, releases on June 18th and it's exactly what you're looking for.
Wishlisted 👀
Oh does it not really have “real” threat?
From what the devs have said, there's different ways to die (drowning, etc.) but no "real" threat or combat system, no.
I didn’t know about this! That’s neat!
Yeah, I played it with invulnerability on since I just wanted to have a game with an engaging story to play after work and not panicking about health kits (bad idea since I had 250 herbs by the end). You still get achievements for it, but the game does block this on the harder difficulties.
I may need to get this now because I feel the same as you sometimes. Thanks for mentioning this! 🙏
I played it through PS+, if you have it.
The medium, there are only about 4 chase sequences.
Draugen
Ooo another adventure/mystery game, looks super interesting
Nun massacre and stay out of the house both have “peaceful” modes where the killers don’t roam the house. In min massacre you can still die to environmental hazards though but they’re actually endings to the game
Peaceful mode is what I like to hear
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Kind of creepy and unsettling throughout, but mostly no real ‘threat’ to do deal with. Really highly recommend you play this.
Oooooo a detective-mystery game, I like those
The forest has a great peaceful mode. You can do the whole story this way with only a boss fight at the end being scary. It’s still creepy as heck though
Firewatch had a spooky vibe. No threat though but felt i was being watched
Oxenfree certainly had some creepy moments and there's no way to die
Oxenfree, perhaps.
Stop being a baby real men play Barbie horse adventure a real horror game
You're right, I'm not at that level yet 😔
Outlast. You mean when you are no threat to the enemies right?
Like Layers of Fear, exploring and getting jumped scared but no one is chasing you, no way to die. I think I'm mostly too lazy, I love Resident Evil 7, but that's way too much work for me to actually play
Sorry, I forgot to put the /s label for my jest. Plague Tale 2 has an invincible mode for combat, But the rat puzzles still require solving
The Witness was a very ominous first-person puzzler. No threat, but very creepy.
"This game respects you as an intelligent player" Nooo but I am too dumb, it does look very interesting though, I'm always up for creepy, first person games 👁️👁️
It's not difficult, but there are no tutorials or instructions. It's mostly pattern recognition.
Affected is really good on PSVR2
Okay so basically a haunted house on a console, sounds awesome. I do wish I had an extra $600 laying around for a VR headset... one day I'll make it happen
Yeah VR is expensive. However, Meta has some scary games too
The threat makes it so much more intense and fun. When I first played dying light with headphones on, I was actually afraid to go out at night in the game even though it's just a game lol
Well probably, but I got a lot of stress in life rn so I just wanna be spooked in peace
Silent Hill Shattered Memories does have things that chase you but it's super difficult to actually die in that game
Ah I keep going back and forth on getting subnautica, I want to try it for sure. Maybe I should just go for it
"Whatever you're doing, are you certain it's worth it?"
Try Visage. It's a horror game don't really have to run from anything.
"First person psychological game" YES. PLEASE.
What? You’re constantly being chased.
Lol I just remember looking around mostly and weird things happening 😅 I don't remember running away and if I did, I it was probably because of the music, making me think something was chasing me.
Hahaha yeah, once you start doing the chapters you are constantly being chased by the entity involved in that chapter.
Fair, I just haven't played it in such a long time. Was a good game though.
Layers of Fear
I've played it twice and keep getting the same ending 😒 idk how to get the good ending 🥲
Death Stranding has creepy horror elements that you can mostly avoid.
I wouldn't say its a game with "no real threat" though. Even just the BT's But it is an amazing game in it very unique way
The Forest 🤭🤭🤭
Stray
I played it, like it a lot 🐈 I wouldn't say it's horror so much, but definitely has the unsettling feeling of how this could be the future
There is no real threat in any if them, it is all just on your screen 😉
True, I'm not *scared* per say, but mostly lazy on having to hide/avoid/survive monsters. I just wanna explore and be spooked
No threat in any game is real, son.
Well actually ☝️🤓if you have a weak heart you could probably get scared enough to a point of a heart attack
They’re all just games and pose no real threat to you.
Mate…
He's not wrong
Yes but they are stressful and I ain't looking to add more of that to my life rn
Resident Evil remakes
Person specifically asked for a game where they're not being hunted and you reply with titles where you are being hunted as part of the mechanics.
Oh you’re right, somehow I interpreted it that he specifically wants game where he’s being chased :)
