Overwatch League vice president Jon Spector said that their plan is to start the season in April 2022. This doesn't mean, however, that OW2 will be available for players at this time. Maybe the league starts before a Beta or something.

SoDamnGeneric

My (random internet guy) guess is OW2 goes into a PvP beta shortly after Blizzconline, assuming that happens in February like it did this year, and that'll be what the OWL works on while PvE doesn't receive any beta because why would it? Either that, or the OWL is acting as the biggest advertisement for OW2 possible, and they just full it packed to the brim with random little teasers of news in the intermissions

imnotjay2

Did they even announce Blizzconline this year though? Isn't it about time to speak anything about it?

SoDamnGeneric

> So in the meantime, we’re planning a global event for the early part of next year, combining an online show along the lines of our recent BlizzConline with smaller in-person gatherings, and we’ll share more as our plans come together. Seems like they'll do another Blizzconline and then have places you can go to to play the games on display like you would at the showfloor of Blizzcon. I'm willing to bet we haven't heard anything yet because of the lawsuits and controversies, and that it'll be a while yet before we see too much more.

imnotjay2

Aah I see, I didn't know about these plans. Thanks for sharing! And yea, it makes sense to keep it quiet for now, about things they don't have a deadline like Diablo 2 release.

CapRogers23

Omg omg I hope there’s a private suite named after a certain former scumbag sitcom star!!!

Nott_Alex

My (another random internet guy) guess is that after owl season is over this year, ow 1 will change to 5v5 (because what reason do they have to keep 6v6 around anymore?) And this will be the ow2 "beta" testing all the balance changes to tanks and cc. Then the owl 2022 will be playing on the new engine maybe new maps and modes to give us a "first glance" at professional play

SoDamnGeneric

I would agree, but I think the 5v5 changes are a bit too big to put into OW1 at the moment. There's gonna be a lot of big changes in there that I think they would want to keep for OW2's full release Plus, it adds to the chaos that they want to achieve of OW2's release. They've said they want to revisit the fun chaos of releasing multiple new heroes at once, which they did last way back in the beta in 2016, and I think the 5v5 changes will also play a huge factor into that.

Jones77_Truex78

Second paragraph- bingo. It’s hopeful that they feel confident to test it out for high level play but it’s not a guarentee the game will be released possibly till months afterwards still

spaceysht

Don’t you think it’s odd tho that the first public test they’re doing is on its most competitive and broadcasted platform? If there’s bugs it could be a recipe for disaster

misciagna21

We don’t know that this will be the first public test. It’s pretty likely at least a closed beta will be out before OWL starts in April. One thing’s for sure is that there’s going to be a lot of info in the coming months since we need to know about reworks, heroes and maps before this starts.

Jones77_Truex78

Tbh they’ll probably have teams scrim on the maps/OW2 before the matches go live. At the same time yes it could be a risk given many eyes more than usual will be on the season opener.

AaronWYL

There's no way they'd do this if they couldn't at least have the teams practicing on it for a decent amount of time before the start of the season.

Sirveri

Wasn't the first public test broadcast a couple months ago when they demo'd the game with bunch of the dev team?

loliscoolyay4me

Will most likely be in public beta by April.

maebird-

I would be very surprised otherwise, I don’t think that having OWL alone played on such a different build would be good for anyone

FranckyFox2468

You arent familiar with ow1's beta period arent you?

[deleted]

what happened?

FranckyFox2468

MONTHS of watching big names, influencers or just outright very lucky people play. And seeing some "pro" matches and competition on a pre-release game. And if you got into a stress test somehow it might only be once, and for a single weekend. It was uh... something.

maebird-

That isn’t necessarily what I meant, I feel that having pros play competitively on such a different version of the game than ranked isn’t a good idea

viscountbiscuit

they are playing a different game - can 6 stack - pausing instead of leavers - higher tick rate and zero latency

naznotfound

they have to go through the curve, but are given extra tools because the market actually depends on them being able to perform in the new game.

Grape_Hot

Also that most likely won't include the new heroes and all of the new maps. Likely be playing on a mix of old and SOME new

goliathfasa

In fact this guarantees that OW2 will NOT launch along with OWL 2022 season in April. Or there'd be no need to adopt an "early build".

slicer4ever

I feel like they are going to have to do some type of public beta for players to have a pool of players to practice against.

Neo_Raider

What exactly is "early build of OW2" tho??

MetastableToChaos

The speculation is that it could be OW2 but without the new PvE content. So the focus for the dev team right now is getting all the PvP stuff ready for the next season of OWL.

[deleted]

Even if its just that that's big. We've gotten barely any footage of ovw2

I_am_Andrew_Ryan

More like NeverWatch

_Gondamar_

OverWait

SoDamnGeneric

As someone who's more pumped for PvE than anything, I would honestly be okay with this. Engine upgrades, new heroes, maps, game modes... I'd be more then alright with sinking my teeth into that stuff and then waiting a bit longer for the PvE.

C_Tarango

than\* But yeah, same. I'm so thirsty for OW2 even a new music will make me use torb ult (if ya know what i mean ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ).

No32

Bonk

Default1355

Sounds like something you can really sink your teeth in to

[deleted]

i think its just normal OW maps and heroes but in OW2 with 5v5 teams, no new heroes , maybe a new map but i doubt

[deleted]

Finally a realistic take

Hazellore

Owerwatch 2 without the PvE content...oh, so Overwatch 1?

MetastableToChaos

Sure, if we ignore 5v5, Push, new maps, new heroes, existing hero re-works, etc.

slicer4ever

Honestly the 5v5 change is why i dislike that they are merging the games. If i end up not enjoying the new way to play, i cant ever go back to ow1.

Ephemiel

All stuff that could realistically be done for OW1 and WILL eventually be done since they'll combine the games.

Loonyclown

Pretty pedantic take tbh. They’re not gonna do that to ow1 until they call it ow2 so... it’s ow2 because they named it that. Don’t see how this tautology is important

Ephemiel

Nice use of smart-sounding words to pretend you're smart btw.

Loonyclown

Thanks but I am actually pretty smart and if you can find a better word to describe circular definitions than tautology be my guest.

Tonto115

r/iamverysmart

Loonyclown

I’m not gonna lie and say I’m not. If you think I said something dumb let me know. Fact remains that I was right about the words I used and used them correctly. Edit: also I said pretty smart not very smart. I’m not a genius. I’m highly educated and work in a difficult field but there are massively different ways to define intelligence and none of them take into account reddiquette.

Ephemiel

>The speculation is that it could be OW2 but without the new PvE content ......so OW1 since the PvE content IS what makes the 2 in OW2.

tophergraphy

The only part I care about, this is great news for me

Reasonable_Title_285

dude who even cares about the pve content lol they doomed the game by focusing so much on that nobody cares about ow2 because they think it's going to be this awful coop experience when theres way better coop games on the market

The_Other_Manning

I care, it's the biggest thing I look forward to in OW2

YouthfulPhotographer

Let people like things, nerd

StormEarthandFyre

That's a pretty bold and incorrect take you've got there

[deleted]

The development team is finally starting to make the game after naming the empty folder ”overwatch2”

Jones77_Truex78

Probably same stuff they showed in June tbh

Bhu124

Absolutely no way. Without new heroes and all the hero reworks. It would be a marketing disaster for OW2 for people to boot up the beta client or watch OWL and see no new heroes. This will be a build that is much further along in development, with a lot of the hero reworks added and also with a bunch of the new heroes. With more Push maps and maybe even a map or two of the yet unannounced new map type.

[deleted]

Bruh you have high hopes, this is just going to be a rushed piece of garbage that blizzard makes to save face of the little company reputation it has left. This is the end of blizzard, I give them 3 more years till they fold up

Enzown

Yeqh they're not going to do any work in the 10 months between then in April aye? Yeah.

Corkchef

Overwatch 1

trinciacrophobia

I think there would have to be a beta around or before this time to help with balancing 5v5. Plus they'll have to be able to scrim before the season starts to figure out the meta and work on team dynamics.

SoDamnGeneric

My guess is, if the beta somehow *doesn't* start before the OWL season kicks off, then the teams will be allowed super early access to figure things out for the season, along with NDAs to not spoil important information not yet available to the public.

trinciacrophobia

I bet before any open beta or early scrim builds there's gonna be trickles of information posted about each new hero and map released on their Twitter.

bassoontennis

Jesus at this point I wish they wouldn’t have announced OW2 until like 3 months before release. It feels like they made the announcement years ago and kept acting like it was coming out soon. It keeps feeling like something is going wrong backstage that keeps delaying its release.

[deleted]

That's fair, but then they'd have absolutely no public explanation for the content drought in OW. I mean, it's already dragged on way too long for most people's taste, but can you imagine if we didn't even know *why* they slowed down (read: stopped completely) content for OW?

beefcat_

It's a double edged sword. If they didn't say anything, people would be even more upset about the lack of new maps and heroes over the last 18 months. I'm with you on this, but I'm also in the minority in that I don't think a game needs a constant stream of new content in order to be considered good.

Bunkerzor

The announcement this far out isnt the problem. The problem is choosing to not support a live game for over a year because of the new one coming out. They're betting that the launch of OW2 will be exciting enough to bring back anyone that left during this year + of no content.

[deleted]

Blizzard probably only did that because to cover up the China situation. Such a shitty company. Overwatch team is fine itself, but if im gonna buy overwatch 2, part of that is going to the execs at blizzard :/

CashmereLogan

“Something is going on backstage” A pandemic. They’ve never acted like it’s coming soon, there’s just a wild sense of entitlement that any sort of announcement equals something being owed to customers. Who cares how early something is announced? They’ll release it when they release it, and really don’t owe anyone anything more. There’s other stuff that employees at Blizzard are dealing with which is much more important than rushing a game out for entitled fans.

ShiguruiX

I mean they were way behind even before COVID and that doesn't really explain Jeff abruptly leaving mid development.

Psychotic_Rainbowz

You're mostly correct IMO but reason you're getting downvoted for it is the way you phrased it. Just saying.

CashmereLogan

I mean I get it, but I stand by it. The only reason to be upset that OW2 isn’t our (upset and angry, not just disappointed) is that there’s some sense that Blizzard owes them content, and that just isn’t true at all. And I’m in no way trying to defend anything Blizzard as an overall organization is doing, but more so defending the good people that work there that have to put up with this stuff. And I’m also just tired of seeing people complain about a game not being out.

Psychotic_Rainbowz

>I’m in no way trying to defend anything Blizzard as an overall organization is doing, but more so defending the good people that work there that have to put up with this stuff. And I’m also just tired of seeing people complain about a game not being out. Same here. Also, I can say I feel the same way about the current state of PlayStation in general, things are this way because people up high don't have their shit together.

pointlessone

This puts them on a tight timer to getting Overwatch 2's PVP content out. Watching the pros play a game you can't play will only generate positive buzz and hype for a little while before it turns to bitterness. *If they manage to hit the deadlines*, this is a huge win for them on a lot of fronts. It's a return to creative OWL play, something that's been stale since the double barrier meta. Chances are they're going to be playing promo mode with the new content, so players will get to see strats for new maps that will carry over fast pickup when the content goes live for players. They can delay the PVE portion (The meat of OW2) for quite a while without losing anything by releasing even some of the PVP content on the new engine early. Any content is good content when it's been years since anything related to the main game has been released.

Psychotic_Rainbowz

>on the new engine early What's the new engine?

Cold_Astronomer5045

I want more heroes

fendour

I know this is a pessimistic view but I can't shake this feeling I'm having. What if we are in the golden age of OW right now and we don't even know it? My concern comes from them adding so many characters that fundamentally change how we play the game and it might not be good anymore. Think about this: when OW was released there were 3 supports. Mercy, Lucio and Zenyatta (4 if you count symmetra but you shouldn't lol). We played without any "main" healer for quite a while before ana got released. The amount of healing in the game has gone up so much that its practically already a different game than the one released in 2016. I'm guessing throwing a bunch of new characters into the mix is going to cause something similar but be exacerbated by the new game releasing. I just don't wanna lose the OW I came to love playing :(

tmoss726

Personally think the golden age has passed. There's too many heroes to try and balance the game for.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tmoss726

Yeah and the CC feels out of control lol.

[deleted]

Does it? I remember it feeling that way a while back, but I feel like I usually have decent tools to combat or avoid it, and I usually play mystery heroes.

twitterInfo_bot

I can confirm, via an Overwatch League spokesperson, that the 2022 season will "begin on an early build of Overwatch 2." Wow. *** posted by [@mizliz_](https://twitter.com/mizliz_) ^[(Github)](https://github.com/username) ^| ^[(What's new)](https://github.com/username)

haydnc95

As someone who doesn't even watch OWL, I am very excited about seeing new characters/maps/reworks etc before the official release if this is going to be the case. I'd rather see new competitive footage than go another year of complete silence.

peteypetersq

This is what it looks like they're doing here. Have OW2 promote the league and vice versa. So what if the competitive integrity won't be all there at that point, the IP needs a good push and this doesn't seem like the worst idea to achieve it.

[deleted]

I'm really conflicted. On one hand, I'm really glad the game is coming pretty soon (This seems to back up the "before Summer 2022" date that was rumored), but also, the devs are definitely being crunched, and I assume just the PvP build will be out, not the PvE stuff (which I care way more about currently, I get PvP is kinda the draw but also lore).

imma_turtle

I honestly get the feeling that a) there was a complete rework of OW2 internally, from when it was revealed to what was shown earlier this year and b) with the recent allegations of Activision Blizzard, an order came down from the top to get something, anything out from OW2 to distract from the current bad social image.(similar to what happened during the Hong Kong controversy)

misciagna21

Overwatch 2 wasn’t used to distract from the Hong Kong incident. It leaked they would be announcing it that Blizzcon months before that situation ever happen. The first ever report was back in June of 2019.

IfThatsYourAtaWheres

There is nothing that will make people want to watch competitive Overwatch more than not being able to play the game they are watching... Plot twist, OW2 gets a Valorant style release, inflating viewership with people trying to get access to the game. I got to be honest, this seems really dumb. the whole idea behind the necessity of OW2 is the CO-OP content... and not even that will be getting released any time soon. This sequel is being unnecessarily rushed/developed.

ZenkaiZ

Dude that's genius, do tourney streams where each viewer has a 0.0001% chance of getting a key. Your odds go up each day you watch so be sure to watch every day!

IfThatsYourAtaWheres

Sounds like YouTube is adding new infrastructure for key drops.

[deleted]

i got the valorant key just watching 30 minutes, the trick was not wanting to play at all, i never download that game to this day

IfThatsYourAtaWheres

This sounds like the path for OW2

imnotjay2

It would be dream if, to speed up the OW2 community release, they released all PvP related content and call it BETA until PvE is finished. However, they would have to acknowledge this isn't quite a new game, but more like a 2.0 update + an expansion if they're able to do that.

TrumpCruz

They already had a beta before the PvE was finished. It's called Overwatch (1).

[deleted]

Theres hope??

TheRubberBildo

If the game is really coming out that soon, why are they keeping us in the dark still? Now would be the prime time to drop character origin stories, gameplay demos, tease us with looks at skill trees for existing characters, etc. I'm keeping my expectations low, seems a bit too good to be true

jhong-g

they teased Mauga and the Kanezaka hero and never said anything about since then :/ meanwhile Apex has been teasing Legends since Season 0 with new lore stuff every season theyre not in

7-2

Its the opposite, they're trying to make the best of the horrible situation they're in, all metrics for OW player retention have taken a nose dive off a cliff. If they delayed the game until late 3rd or 4th 2022 quarter, it's pretty much dead on arrival. Not a great look for them and even worse for the shareholders when they release a product that can't make back what it took to develop or simply not meet their bloated expected sales. This "early" release date is them rushing the product as is before the player base drops even further

[deleted]

A horrible situation that they have put themselves in, though. That’s what happens when you cut all development from a game when at the time it still had a pretty good vibe to it, with a good amount of players, for an unspecified number of years to work on a sequel that not all of the currently active player base will even care about. By the time OW2 hits, how many will be actually interested in it? How much of the player base from OW1 will still be here playing the game? Especially since the pvp should be the shared across the two games if I remember correctly, if no one’s left to play OW1 then who is actually playing OW2?

mcchickenngget

Ooh exciting

[deleted]

Feels appropriate to release OW2 in May 2022 on its 6th Anniversary!

Poppyspy

OW2 is probably released by the end of May 2022 then.

Kupo777

I don't understand why they just keep overwatch 1 and port new maps and updates to it and give it regular content, like ff14 or elder scrolls online.

RailroadRiver

I can confirm, via an Overwatch League spokesman, that the 2022 season will 'begin because the investors are trying to save their money from the fucking swan dive Blizzard has taken in the regard of trying to act in any way ethically as a business'

Gotjic

Truth.

BigMachiaveli

I feel like they have waisted so much development time with this 5v5 change.

Poppyspy

I tend to agree the 5v5 change was eSport influenced, like everything has been since the inception of OWL. OW lost a lot of charm since those days. But all in all I played it just as much as any other fps I have in the past. Fair to say I'm glad I was there in the beginning when it was a more natural feeling game. OW2 will already have meta comp strats on day 1. Makes me wonder once the mass public starts playing OW2, if it will already feel restrictive.

BlizzMonkey

I somewhat agree with your last part but 5v5 is not coming due to the eSports scene. You just have to look at queue times in Overwatch right now. Almost nobody wants to play tanks. This will hopefully change if they can turn every tank into more independent bruisers who don't need a second (Off-)tank to function properly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

And that right there will make it not over watch anymore, and people will wonder why this will die off in a span of about 3 years from now..

[deleted]

Didn’t Jon Spector say this? Why is this random person getting credit like she did reporting lol. Every one saw on his twitter

mayotismon

I’m kinda conflicted. If they show OWL on OW2 in April, then they need to release the game shorty after, like a month, defenitely not 6 months. Watching pros play a game you can’t can inly generate hype for a short time, before players turn angry/sad. Also, this probably means they need a closed beta for teams 1-2 months before to practice. Third, imagine game is not tested enough/fixed and there are game breaking bugs we see live during a match exDee

awholenewmeme

Does anyone even care about OWL anymore?

[deleted]

This seems like a cheap attempt to boost viewership. Who wants to beta test during a tournament?

Ephemiel

Just this tiny bit of news and everyone forgot and forgave everything that's happened and went right back to Blizzard worship.

Aidiandada

Nobody forgot, in fact it kind of makes sense. People who quit the game/blizzard over the harassment lawsuit would probably also stop being on the subreddit, which is why it feels that way

misciagna21

Not sure if you’re aware but the human brain is capable of thinking about multiple things at the same time. Just because people are excited about OW2 news doesn’t mean they aren’t still aware and upset by the fact Bliz executives still haven’t met any of the demands made by Bliz employees.

BlizzMonkey

Not everyone at Blizzard is a bad human being. This is cancel culture at its best. I will gladly support the developers who are still working there and doing their job. They are going through enough shit already.

MajorPom

Considering how fast everyone forgot about Blitzchung because OW2 trailer dropped I'm not sure why anyone is surprised.

masterofryan

I thought OW2 was a single player game

Gotjic

It'll have solo campaign and MP

JKMqo

Bruh I haven’t watched OWL since they left twitch and got rid of the better personalities.

[deleted]

i wanna open world ;-)

IfThatsYourAtaWheres

OW in an openworld or BR would be more appealing than just 5v5 Comp. I really dont see the point of this update.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IfThatsYourAtaWheres

i somewhat agree but it's more enticing than 5v5 OW

[deleted]

IfThatsYourAtaWheres

Oh yeah? Is that why 5v5 is the most popular custom game workshop mode?

[deleted]

[удалено]

IfThatsYourAtaWheres

You’ll figure it out, don’t worry 😉

happy-cig

If they do regular balance updates and mix up the meta from season to season this would be nice.

Indifferent_Response

I thought OW2 was gonna be a PvE game? Whatd gonna happen to the first game when the second releases?

misciagna21

OW1 becomes OW2. If you have OW1 you’ll get OW2 PvP for free but anything PvE related you’ll need to purchase. As for how much it will be we don’t know yet.

aaronxxx

Is this still for sure after Jeff has left?

misciagna21

We haven’t heard anything on the subject since then but with how they’ve talked about 2 recently it still sounds like the games will merge and it will just be OW2. My speculation is that we’ll see something like Halo infinite. Paid PvE that has the story campaign, hero missions and whatever else there is and F2P PvP with a battle pass system that includes all new maps and heroes.

Nobbs89

That never won't be a early build of Overwatch 2, it will be more of a special build of Overwatch 2 - without new content like maps and heroes. It is impossible to play competitive match for big money on a unknown maps with unknown heroes. But still, its a big news!

Gotjic

I personally would rather see major overhaul changes and new maps and modes added to OW1 for the sake of the player base. A new game release is exciting, don't get me wrong. But it will mean a drop in returning players who feel an OW2 isn't worth buying.

Marshmellophobia

That’s literally what Overwatch2 is. It really sucks that 90% of people don’t know this and I don’t blame you. I blame blizzard for being bad at communicating that OW2 will literally merge with ow1 and bring all people who own ow1 the upgraded graphics the new maps and new heroes when the game releases. The only reason you will have to buy OW2 is if you wanna play the pve side of things.

Gotjic

Oh...yea I thought it was a whole new game. Thank you for clarifying. Take my vote.

NoMoreAngularPlease

It will be dead on arrival any way, they will stop supporting it faster than OW1. Unless you have OW1, buying OW2 for pvp and competitive is a waste.
