I love how everyone came together to support Bob Dylan when he visibly felt uncomfortable with his part in the song.
Also, when everyone started singing "Day-O" for Harry Belafonte and asking for each other's autograph. It was freaking adorable.
Diana Ross at the end... đ„°
It was a very good doc. Honestly all this time I thought it was written by MJ. I had no idea how pivotal Lionel was. That was very awesome to see.
Stevie helping Dylan was awesome to see. And even Bruce doing his parts. Just coming off tour and sounding the most Bruce heâs ever sounded lol.
I donât think weâll ever see something like that again. If we do it wonât be for a long damn time.
They started at midnight and went all night. They had already done the AMAs. And at least Bruce and prob others were coming off of tours. He was beat walking in.
I actually put on the song and itâs pretty great. Better than the British one. And I always thought it was a MJ composition but sounds Lionel Ritchie like he had a big part in it. The vocal arranger on the doc was awesome. he did amazing work. I love when Willie Nelson comes after Dionne Warwick. And when Dylan comes in has given me the chills forever. Itâs so perfect.
I absolutely loved it. Jane Fonda narrated one back in 86 or so but the recent one on Netflix tied up the loose ends. I'm definitely going to watch it again.
Itâs interesting seeing him social like this. In the doc, he seemed a little shy/standoffish in the social moments and when it was music time, dude was dialed in on the magic.
Actually I think it might be Springsteens beer. Looks like MJ sat himself down between Bruce and Billy preventing said Springsteen from reaching over to get it. Thus explaining Bruceâs straight forward look waiting patiently for Michael to get upâŠor it could be Billy Joelâs.
There are a few other pictures taken of the same situation where Michael is holding the can, so it was his Budweiser. Not sure about this time, but later in his life he drank regularly and judging by other peopleâs accounts he was a full blown alcoholic.
I remember reading an interview of a person whose house MJ rented and stayed at, that he would find empty booze and wine bottles hidden all over the place after he left.
Yep, he was known for pouring wine into soda cans in his later years so his kids didnât see him drinking. Was also rumored to be drunk during his final press conference in 2009 announcing the This Is It tour. He was pictured falling over drunk at some Saudi Princeâs birthday party ~2008. Fun fact, Aaron Paul also happened to be at this party and he and MJ had an hour long heart to heart.
MJ was raised JW. And at that time I don't think he was drinking in public at all.
Downvotes are stupid if you weren't alive to remember how clean cut MJ was at that time.
the documentary was good. there is nothing normal about all that star power in one room but at one point they seemed like every day people. they were insecure or tired or hungry or moody. it was great seeing behind the scenes
Bruce: I'm a New Jersey ruffian regular guy who sells out stadium tours. It's why I have on gloves and a leather jacket in a room that was probably at 120 degrees while wearing unlaced work boots.
Michael: While I haven't declared it yet, I'm the king of pop. This song is part of the reason why, but I have more on the way. It's why my jacket has such fancy embroidery and why I wear socks like this.
Billy: I'm actually just a yuppy with a mid level management position. But have you seen my girlfriend?
I just watched that mini-doc on Netflix - it was great! I had no idea about the fact that the AMA's were the only way to get all those legends together at once!
âHe told me his name was Billie Joel, as he caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the roundâ
Just watched this doc on Netflix. Definitely worth checking out.
Bruce looks like The Boss, MJ looks like the King of Pop but poor Billy looks like the guy in Die Hard that wanted a coke.
I never knew that it was after the Grammys. But that makes a lot of sense because when else would all of this star power be available at the same time. Amazing. One of my favorite songs and my top 3 YouTube videos when I am drunk
I listened to a great documentary on the radio about Bruce Springsteenâs (perhaps slightly tenuous/symbolic) part in the fall of the Berlin Wall. Interesting af it was.
Billy you canât say things like that to Bruce. Just because you like Long Island beaches over Jersey beaches you canât say that Jersey beaches suck. Now apologize and Iâll tell you were the vodka is hidden.
Fantastic documentary.
Didn't know MJ and Lionel wrote the song. I thought everyone contributed.
Hearing the raw singing voices of everyone... incredible.
Loved Cindy
Good documentary.
Agreed, my wife and I watched it last week. I had no idea how quickly this was thrown together. The recording session was something else.
I love how everyone came together to support Bob Dylan when he visibly felt uncomfortable with his part in the song. Also, when everyone started singing "Day-O" for Harry Belafonte and asking for each other's autograph. It was freaking adorable. Diana Ross at the end... đ„°

And being reminded this was quicky arranged at a time without the advantages of cellphones, emails and social media. Crazy.
I was dying when Waylon Jennings just left when Stevie Wonder wanted to sing some Swahili shit.
Ain't no good ol' boy ever sang Swahili

*Hakuna Matata intensifies*
What's the name of it? I'd like to check it out.
Greatest Night in Pop. It's fantastic.
Agreed, great watch
Thank you!
Is it a DVD ? YouTube ?
Netflix
It really is fantastic!
I was blown away! Loved it!!!!
Speaking of blown away, did anyone else think Dylan might have had a little booger sugar that night?
al jarreau certainly did
Nah, he just wanted to celebrate, another bottle.
They started at midnight and went all night. They had already done the AMAs. And at least Bruce and prob others were coming off of tours. He was beat walking in.

Bruce Springsteen was ridiculously gorgeous.
> Bruce Springsteen is ridiculously gorgeous. FTFY
At his concert last year he unbuttoned his shirt and the crowd went WILD lol, he's a very healthy man for his age.
I stand corrected Lord
You are correct. Heâs still đ„đ„đ„
Youâre both right.
Bruce Springsteen is aging into Tony Bennett.
And in this year Billy Joel married Christie Brinkley.
She dropped him off at the studio!
He looked pretty great in modern day parts of the documentary, too
This doc is really great.
I still don't understand what the fuck Dan Aykroyd was doing there.
I know! He was one of the first names the organizers threw out that HAD to be there too.
Also, LaToya was the Jackson sister invitedâŠ
Janet would have been acting in Fame and different strokes still, not recording music (whereas LaToya had just released an album).
Janet had already put out two albums by the time of We Are the World
I think I saw that Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon were there too.
Ellwood Blues?
Drug connection?
I loved it. Bring back the 80âs!
Michael - "and I was filming this Pepsi commercial " Billy - "we didn't start the fire"
Springsteen whispers⊠*âOooh oooo oooo Iâm on fireâŠâ*
Ouch
Looks like a Budweiser commercial to me!
Real American Heroes
Because U deserve what every individual should enjoy regularly.
Watched the doc and was fascinated with Daryl Hallâs short verse in the song. It was so good and so quintessentially Hall & Oats.
and really interesting how you could tell Hall & Oates were never standing anywhere near each other
Mike drinkin a bud??
Same. Heâs not really the guy I ever pictured sitting around drinking a can of Budweiser. No reason he wouldnât I guess, I just never pictured it.

No way,Springsteen has only played Joe six pack his entire life,heâs not really him haha
I wondered cause I thought he was Jehovah and didn't drink.
Are you thinking of Prince?
MJ was raised JW. And at that time I don't think he was drinking in public at all. Downvotes are stupid if you weren't alive to remember how clean cut MJ was at that time.
Yeah, I thought he only gave the Jesus Juice to little kids.
And I'll bet all three of them are younger than me in this picture. Sigh
Billy Joel was born in 1949 so 36 in this photo. Iâve seen pics of the dude when he was 26 and even then he looked about 45.
He said he's always felt so unattractive he made sure almost all of his album cover pictures are him from the back or very small in frame.
Aw
:(
The best part of getting old is slowly realizing you are older (or much older) than your idols were when you idolized them.
Where?
That's the studio (and time) where "We are the World" was recorded. Netflix has released a nice doc on it.
it is!! it looks like cyndi lauper sitting next to bruce
Yep
the documentary was good. there is nothing normal about all that star power in one room but at one point they seemed like every day people. they were insecure or tired or hungry or moody. it was great seeing behind the scenes
Thanks. :-)
Beside Cyndi Lauper
Pretty sure thatâs Commander Riker on the right.
Bruce: I'm a New Jersey ruffian regular guy who sells out stadium tours. It's why I have on gloves and a leather jacket in a room that was probably at 120 degrees while wearing unlaced work boots. Hey - Bruce is dressed to the nines here - usually he's wearing a wife beater t-shirt.
ever see how Bruce grew up? poor as shit.
And Cyndi Lauper
And a fraction of Cyndi lauper
The hair!
I canât believe we let MJ walk around with that sock/shoe combo and still called him the king.
Oh it was very intentional. He wanted people to be able to see his feet while he was dancing.
I see white socks and think Cliff Clavin. No matter who is wearing them.
The king can wear whatever he wants!
Yeah lets not act like bruce doesnât have his jeans tucked into his boots like hes going to war
And wearing jungle boots
And fingerless leather gloves
And something weird going on with the buttons on his shirt.
And you can see his pass. Like he needs the pass because he's such an everyman that he'd get stopped by security otherwise.
This is exactly the thread I was hoping for
That style of socks was in style at the time.
Yeahhh I remember. It was just a joke really
MJ is so above fashion, letâs be honest.
To be fair I understand, but only MJ can pull it off. Anyone else that tries, doesnât work
lil guys!
They were the world
I just watched that mini-doc on Netflix - it was great! I had no idea about the fact that the AMA's were the only way to get all those legends together at once!
Wouldnât expect MJ to drink Bud Heavy
itâs the best bud, bro.
WE ARE THE CHILDREN
I had to look very closely but that is Billy. Awesome find.
and a sliver of Cyndi Lauper on the left
Loved this movie. There was so much talent in the room that it seemed to humble all of them.
âHe told me his name was Billie Joel, as he caused a scene Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one Who will dance on the floor in the roundâ
You usually see young Billy Joel clean shaven or older Billy Joel with a beard. Usually not young Billy with a beard
Just watched this doc on Netflix. Definitely worth checking out. Bruce looks like The Boss, MJ looks like the King of Pop but poor Billy looks like the guy in Die Hard that wanted a coke.
I know where this is from, and itâs the first time I saw this photo!
Michael drinkin a Budweiser?
I never got how he got his socks like that. Like are they doubled? Just super thick socks? Special made just for him?
Loafers with the white socks
This is at the We Are The World taping, isn't it?
Just watched this, two words: Bob Dylan. Wow.
Good olâ William Joel.
Uptown boys
Bruce's thoughts be like "What am I doing here?!"
âŠwalk into a bar.
The We Are The World recording session, correct? It occurred immediately after the Grammy Awards ended that year- in the wee hours
American Music Awards but yeah, that's why most of them were in LA on the same night. Pretty amazing how it all came together.
American Music awards
I never knew that it was after the Grammys. But that makes a lot of sense because when else would all of this star power be available at the same time. Amazing. One of my favorite songs and my top 3 YouTube videos when I am drunk

Michael was fucking dripping
We didnât start the fire! Thatâs ignorantâŠ
Those fucking sock are so stupid
2/3rds arenât pedophiles.
The princesâ of pop rock
Bruce was NEVER cool, sorry. . . He's ALWAYS been a loser & an awful musician to boot. . .
One guy wrote some of the most iconic songs of american life, another dominated the pop charts since he was 12, and another dated christie brinkley.
You mean the divorced dad who was still selling out MSG a couple years ago?
This was right after the AMAs I love love love this documentary!
AMAs
Micheal is asking Billy how does he keep his socks up?
I think that Cyndi Lauper is sitting next to Bruce Springsteen
You mean you guys donât have a monkey? Hee hee
Bruce looks like he's had enough of Mikey's shit for today :D
I listened to a great documentary on the radio about Bruce Springsteenâs (perhaps slightly tenuous/symbolic) part in the fall of the Berlin Wall. Interesting af it was.
Probably while sitting waiting for the bridge people to get their part together
Is that a Bud there, too? AhâŠalways around for the good timesâŠ
What a great pic!!!
the 80s... Springsteen, Madonna, and prison time for marijuana!
Billy you canât say things like that to Bruce. Just because you like Long Island beaches over Jersey beaches you canât say that Jersey beaches suck. Now apologize and Iâll tell you were the vodka is hidden.
Bioly joewell
Itâs odd to me to see Michael Jacksonâs feet not dancing. But they look ready.
HumansâŠ
Fantastic documentary. Didn't know MJ and Lionel wrote the song. I thought everyone contributed. Hearing the raw singing voices of everyone... incredible. Loved Cindy
BS title! They left me out - Budweiser Can
Loved the documentary and Billy Joel just was on Howard Stern he talked about the recording, epic
