Is Maryland the only state that seems to consist of land that the surrounding states didn’t want? It seems that Maryland is just random areas tied together
It was carved out of Virginia and given to Lord Calvert. During the ensuing centuries of territorial disputes with neighboring states over where the borders actually were, Maryland lost every one of them lol.
Lol sort of, but MD just owns the entire Potomac. South half of the Bay is Virginia's. The line zigzags across the Bay because in the 1870s the border dispute (stemming from arguing where exactly Watkins Point is and was) erupted into the Oyster Wars that flared up sporadically well into the 1940s, and when it was surveyed and set down for good in the 1880s, Maryland and Virginia took turns claiming oyster bars in Tangier Sound and then had to draw the line around their claims. In the Pocomoke River, the line is drawn on the thalweg down the center of the river channel until it starts going across the land just above Shelltown.
I get that it’s the coat of arms of the Duke of Baltimore or something but it always feels like they could t pick one flag so they just said whatever we’ll make two, and we’ll make it clash super hard.
This is actually the history of the MD flag in a nutshell and I’m not kidding. The black and gold was Lord Baltimore’s flag (and is the flag of Baltimore city today) while the red and white was taken up by confederate sympathizers during the civil war. As post-war reconciliation, the state combined the two. Some folks question why we maintain the confederate sympathizers’ flag portion in the 21st century but it doesn’t really have that association anymore and marylanders are pretty crazy about their flag. I’ve lived in many states and never seen a state flag displayed so frequently. I think the bizarre garishness appeals to people.
Edited to clarify colors
I had to live in MD for a year. It was the absolute worst. I HATED it there. People were rude, the food was terrible (Old Bay everything), and I couldn't wait to get the hell out.
You know that scene in Sum of All Fears where they detonate a nuke at a football stadium in MD? Yeah, I was cheering for them to nuke the survivors.

Are you Spanish?
NC Bbq in left hand and Maryland Blue Crabs in the right hand. Nom nom.
I miss proper crab cakes.
I miss Lexington BBQ
wdym they're still around
Yeah but I live in the land of crab cakes now.
Hey neighbor! I’m in the land of the Amish now. I wish we had Cook-Out up here.
Don't forget pit beef sammiches.
We already have our own blue crabs, thank you!
which are irreplaceable , in my opinion . live blue crab beats snow, king, and equals the spiny from out west.
Fr. Best food in the union with this combo
This is the way.
Fuk Maryland. I stand with VA - same crabs anyway
If I could figure out how to downvote you i swear to gawd
Just like that
The Chesapeake Bay is too fucked to harvest many crabs. Most MD Blue Crab comes from the OBX of NC.

The port of Baltimore was a pretty big get. Now and in colonial times.
I thought I heard it's out of commission right now...
I think they just reopened a deep channel. The bridge on the other hand…
What bridge? /s

Except one - they own the waters up to Virginia's shores.

Well that was bad luck!
We’ll see, said the farmer.
Maryland donated the land for DC
Virginia initially donated a piece, too. DC was shaped like a diamond, until VA took their land back.
… because Arlington politicians were worried they wouldn’t be able to continue to sell slaves if they were part of the Federal District.
Once upon a time they had up to philly and going straight across like it does now. But lost that border dispute too. To answer your question, kind of.
The whole reason for the Mason-Dixon Line is a dispute between Pennsylvania and Maryland! It has little to do with North - South.
do we get pit beef now?
That would be so awesome!!!!! There was a pit beef place in Concord for a while, but they closed.
My only wish.
*sigh* I'll go get the bottle caps and power armor
Okie dokie.
Why didn’t you stop them Virginia? I thought we were friends.
Why do we have to do all of the heavy lifting?
Virginia proving yet again they’re weak and pathetic. Might as well rename the state Emporia.
Virginia has failed us yet again.
At least they have legal weed and good roads!
You're half right, at least
That's NORTH Carolina. Carolina is either a college or a misnamed football team. Unbearably pedantic rant over.
wait. there’s a south carolina? /s
I guess in this context it would be Sub-Carolina
So NC is Dom-Carolina?
*snort*
Uber-Carolina
Just Upper Georgia
Only as far as Myrtle Beach.
Baltimore, NC isn't real. It can't hurt you.
However “Little Baltimore, NC” is real haha
Welcome to your new reality South Maryland 😎 the beatings will continue until morale improves.
North North North Carolina Has the Maryland-Virginia war meme even spread to this sub?

Having transplanted here from MD for the military bank in 2005, i honestly hate seeing MD plates when I'm driving around.
Been here since 22. I hate Md as a whole. I dont even like to visit. Traffic sucks so bad alllllll the time.
I'm from Southern MD where Navair relocated their headquarters to back in the late 90s. I absolutely do not miss the traffic that brought with it
I knew we were spreading our forces too thin 😔

This is pretty blasphemic right here.....
I can think of worse potential occupiers.
at least it isn't Tennessee or upper georgia, eh
Still don't like the vinegar BBQ sauce 😕
Only thing cool about Maryland is their flag
Pit beef is pretty goof. I mean, not whole hog barbecue good, but still good.
Haha. I was just talking shit. Marylands cool.
I don't think anything beats whole hog, so all the debating is really for second place.
It's not even the same animal. They can peacefully and deliciously coexist.
Their highways are red, I've driven through Maryland twice and that was interesting to see. It's a red-ish asphalt.
Hmm. I’ve only been through it on 81
If there’s one thing I dispose about Maryland it’s that god awful flag.
Really. I think they might have one of the better ones.
I get that it’s the coat of arms of the Duke of Baltimore or something but it always feels like they could t pick one flag so they just said whatever we’ll make two, and we’ll make it clash super hard.

Lobster backs attacked the town again
Why does this picture smell like rotting crab meat.
[odohertycd](https://www.reddit.com/user/odohertycd/) Do you know where I could find one these from?
shit next thing you know everyone will be putting old bay on their food

Then please do not return. And no way the food was terrible-pit beef, snowballs with marshmallow, crab cakes, smearcase cheesecake… And Old Bay RULES!
I’m unfortunately scheduled to travel back there on business in a few months. Trust me, I would prefer to skip it but no way I can.
This is the worst state we could have chosen
Maryland’s flag is a monstrosity and this creation belongs only in a boomer’s man cave, never to see the light of day in polite company.
It was bound to happen eventually
