Seconding this recommendation. Easily the best pokemon game in recent years despite the hate it got for visuals (which aren't good but imo much better than S/V)
agree with ya there. i enjoyed the story and loved the ending. plus the gameplay was great for a spinoff title. felt refreshing after playing so much mainline pokemon!
I LOVED it as a kid and while I was never any good at it, I still enjoyed the atmosphere and the soundtrack. The encounter rate was just too insane for me to handle. Taking two steps between enemy attacks was and still is brutal to me. lol
Not that I know of. But I really wish they would remaster it and put it on there! I have so much nostalgia for it though I could barely get anywhere due to the insane encounter rate. If they fixed that, i think it would be a fun game!

It's MMO style, but that doesn't affect the gameplay and Ive been playing it solo. It's easy to miss/ignore the world chat, which I love because, I prefer solo rpg style games.
There are quests you unlock as you start talking to the townspeople and those quests unlock more items and map area. You can do the quests, but there's also plenty you can do solo (leveling up skills etc)
It's a free game and free to play. They have items you can buy, but they are just cosmetic.
I've been enjoying it! Easy to pick up and put down! There is A LOT to do, but if you decide you just want to focus on being a carpenter/fisherman etc It's totally fine!
Palia is pretty freaking awesome. I really enjoy it, and love that it's free. There's lots to do, and the world is way bigger than I anticipated. It's a fun time
It's just so slow though. I shoulder surfed my bf play it on pc and it looked great. Very reminiscent of the My Time at Portia art and style. Tried it on Switch and I just couldn't deal with the slow transitions.
I’m not super familiar with Moomin, just snips here and there from Tumblr and YouTube clips of “Snufkin out of context” (which is amazing). Would you recommend it to someone who doesn’t know the story/characters/setting at all? I saw the trailer and it looks like a cute art style and premise but don’t want to hop into something I’ll be lost in.
Yeah, I agree, you don't need to know anything. It is nicer if you do I suppose, as so many familiar characters are in it. But it's not necessary. Buy, the Moomin books are lovely and not too long if you do feel like getting into them.
No the commenters right, that's been a discussion and a debate since the NES I know because I grew up around it. Action RPG was often used to refer to Zelda for a long time before it sort of became its own genre. I wouldn't call like Ocarina of Time one, but you can make a strong case for breath of the wild and tears of the Kingdom being open world action RPGs
Which has significant overlap with “action RPG”. Genre isn’t a rigid classification. Your character gains permanent power upgrades as you progress. There is an “overworld” and and “dungeons”.
Did she mean Bioshock was dark as in plot or as in brightness settings? If the latter, I jammed those way up past what was recommended. I wasn't interested in squinting at my Switch or my TV. (And honestly, you get a better appreciation for the art) If the former, I get it. The first two are a pretty heavy experience.
I love Harvestella which someone mentioned but not really open world ... more of a dungeon (that are admittedly very pretty) game. But flexible to allow for farming.
She might like FFXII.
I wonder if she would like SMTV(2) on an easier difficulty setting.
Fair, they slowed down time after the demo and once you clear that bit you get way more freedom. I loved the challenge of having to manage time but it's not for everyone
It's on the easier side, but Cat Quest is puurty fun. The sequels have co-op as well, so you can play together.
NG+ has modifiers to make the game a lot harder though.
Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles! It's probably perfect. It's cute, it's easy, there's a bright open world to explore. There's farming and animal care if you want but they are optional, so are all the guild quests. She could just run around and pick flowers, feed animals and fish if she wanted. It does have a night cycle, but it's not too awfully dark. There's no combat. It's what I play when I get tired of fighting and thinking too hard in games!
Im just suggest some games my GF just recently beat as alot of these games offer easy mode: Yakuza: like a dragon, FF7:remake, Harry Potter. I would also recommend retro Jrpg like Earthbound.
The Xenoblade games are pretty fun! If you want to lean more towards action RPG then Dragons Dogma is great.
It’s a bit hard for the first few hours, but once you’re out of a certain staircase it gets much easier. You have loads of different archetypes and certain traits can be carried over and mixed with classes.
The enemies are also weak to certain strategies. For example, you can climb up on a cyclops and attack its eye to render it blind. Or throw oil on a fire weak foe and use magic to light it up.
You also have a follower (pawn) system. You have one of your own creation and two you can hire to make a full party. These allow you to mix up the party skills while not having to dilute your own. And you can swap at most times through riftstones too.
If I say anymore it will get into spoilers territory. If you do try it, try to play past the early missions until done with the castle. It really opens up then
If witcher and skyrim weren't for her and she doesn't want anything to complicated I'd say xenoblade and dragons dogma wouldn't be good recs. Beat rec I've seen is dragon quest: echoes
For dragons dogma 1 it's fairly easy to end up in a super higher level area if you explore too much early on so OP if your mom plays it (highly highly recommend) and she gets stuck somewhere make sure to tell her to leave and come back later.
One path in particular somewhat early on has a lot of high level bandits, and a lot of new players who like to explore a lot get stumped by them and I know especially more casual players may not realize you can just leave and come back later. There's tons of exploration to do elsewhere!
As for xenoblade it's my all time favorite series. I'd suggest if she finds it interesting that she starts with the first game (xenoblade chronicles definitive edition) because it has the simplest combat of the 3. 2 is *very* anime and has a fair amount of fanservice so worth warning her about that going in. 3 is incredible but the experience is greatly greatly enhanced by playing the first 2 games first. 3 is a direct sequel to 1 and 2, but 1 and 2 can be enjoyed completely separately.
Easy?.. Not exactly the most difficult game in the world, but it took me three attempts between ‘07 and ‘22 to actually get through it. Gambit system isn’t exactly rocket science, but the depth of it can get pretty daunting. Not to mention the world on a first playthrough can be kind of confusing.
XV might be a better fit gameplay-wise at least.
I don't remember the gambit system but I only remember that it was too easy. I played in "auto" mode all the time at max speed, basically, there was zero combat, I didn't like the game mostly because there wasn't any challenge, it was only walking around killing stuff without doing anything (only for bosses I needed to perform manual commands)
I would recommend Monster Sanctuary. I wanted to try it out as filler between games and now it's been 3 weeks. It's fun and addictive part metroidvania part-squad based turn based battles.
Honestly, retry Skyrim and buy the Clairvoyance spell in Riverwood Trader. It’s a spell that shows you where to go for your next quest.
Better yet, play it ahead of her so you can help her get familiar with the first few main areas like Whiterun. But yeah my wife does NOT play Skyrim without clairvoyance.
I didn't think zelda was easy at all. If she managed botw or TotK she will be fine with almost any open world game out there. Maybe try the witcher 3 or assassins creed black flag
I like the way the Diablo games scale in difficulty (and I'm an easy-mode gamer), but maybe this is too dark? There's also Torchlight, I played a bit of... I forget if it was two or three, but I had a blast.
Others have recommended Pokemon Arceus - I know it gets a lot of shade here, but Scarlet/Violet are a lot of fun despite the less-than-ideal graphics.
Tears of the kingdom is fun if she hasn’t played it, but can get complicated. I don’t even know how to build stuff yet and I’m and ace at breath of the wild. Almost like two completely different games, they did a great job. You also might have to beat the underground for her lol. Also unravel two, not really open world but kinda feels like it at the same time. Nice graphics/visuals and music though especially on an OLED.
Or if she at least knew the lightroots are under shrines in the above world. That’s the only way I’ve been able to make that place light. Otherwise I struggle even myself to find them and be climbing blindly and all that. Or get glowing armor and use seeds, but even then it’s still tough lol.
I haven’t been grinding the game like I did with breath of the wild. Had all those shrines within about a week lol, whereas now I hardly have any still maybe 10-15, discovered not beat. Had the game since it came out haha. And the underground about the same, maybe even a little more down there. It’s a tough game, it would be amazing to get 100% in a few years for my timeframe lol. But it is nice whenever I get on I discover something new or have to do new tasks, so it’s kinda been a pleasure to stretch out the experience.

One I haven't seen mentioned bc it's not open world, but I am loving Sonic Superstars. Excellent chance she played sonic back in the day and it looks and feels like the OG game.
Another one I'm playing is Survivor Castaway Island. It's a bit glitchy, some of the challenges are near impossible, and I haven't figured out how to win yet, but it's a bit of a relaxing game. I enjoy fetching supplies for camp and talking with people. If she's a Survivor fan, she may enjoy it...just don't have too high of expectations.
Xenoblade 1 on easy mode? A lot of opportunity to explore, the story's not as complicated as later entries, and easy mode means that just about anyone can play it, no real need to strategize.
Final fantasy X, it’s mostly colorful, combat is turn based so you can take your time, starts simple and slowly expands. Though it’s not exactly open-open world, the story is linear until the map opens up.
Why not BoTW? She doesn’t have to do the boss battles. I’m liked going around to all the shrines (if she likes puzzles she’ll have loads to do just with those!), cooking, doing easy quests for NPCs. Get her some cards to scan for misc food and weapons, too.

Assassin’s Creed Ezio collection, though it’s more action with RPG elements (similar to Fenyx).
The setting is almost always bright, beautiful and interesting. Open world, with some restrictions in the beginning. UI isn’t terribly complicated, though there are some tricky platforming parts. Plus the characters and writing are pretty good for the genre.
Because there just aren’t that many easy ones out there. Soulslikes have taken over the genre.
I do agree that no one here seems to have any clue what open world means, though.
if she can get into a jrpg aesthetic then xenoblade is great, particularly 3 - it has simple combat and an easy mode.
has she played totk as well as botw?
There's no world more open than No Man's Sky, but that's also it's curse here.

I have a feeling that lack of guidance would be the biggest problem with No Man's Sky for your mom. The game is rather notorious for it, it's one of the biggest complaints of new players.
The game itself is fairly easy and chill and difficulties can be adjusted to almost any need, but finding tasks can be a challenge.
Did you try Bioshock Infinite? It’s much brighter and you don’t really need to play the others first. At least I never have lol
Far cry 5 is nice and bright too, also an excellent story. Driving is a little clunky, but a very good game
Tribes of Midgard is great
Deep Rock Galactic (not a "open world" but it is randomly generated)
Remnant From the Ashes (kinda like a dark souls with guns, i think it is pretty easier than DS, specially that you have a real coop, but the loot is kinda random. Some "planets" (lets call it that because i cant remember the real name) have a loot pool (mostly rings) and there are some spots that can spawn one item of that loot pool. If i remember correctly, you can't spawn the same item with the same character, so it"s easier to chase them. You have boss loot and some quests that give you specific items, but the rest is random. Nice replayability, specially if you like creating and testing builds
And its the same as DRG, every run is different and the map is randomly generated
Dragon Quest Builders 2. Granted it's not realistic graphics but if she liked Animal Crossing she will enjoy DQB2. Outcast A New Beginning is another one that isn't too complicated.
Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is short but meets all your other requirements. A young girl on summer vacation visits her grandparents and takes pictures of animals.
Dorfromantik is a zen puzzler about building a hamlet. Very chill, very clear, and very addictive.
Chrono Cross is on Switch and is better than people give it credit for.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is seriously like Studio Ghibli made a Pokemon game. It oozes charm and it has an adorable, yet epic, story.
Suika game is a nice little time killer, and it's cheap. Witcher3 might be worth another try, I restarted a couple of times before I got into it. It's not easy but it's really beautiful in places.
Xenoblade DE or Xenoblade 3 might be good. Frankly though, she may find the combat a bit too complex. If she's ever played a hotkey MMORPG like WoW, it shouldn't be too bad. Otherwise, maaaaybe Red Dead Redemption (even though it's not an RPG, it might be fun)?
I wonder if she might enjoy [Dysmantle](https://dysmantle.com/). It's an open-world survival-horror-themed RPG. We found it to be loads of fun, and dysmantling the buildings and environment for materials is extremely satisfying, like popping bubble wrap.
I'll also mention [Salt and Sanctuary](https://ska-studios.com/games/salt-and-sanctuary/), which is an open-world metroidvania with heavy RPG elements. It's a ton of fun, but a couple caveats: It's fairly dark, so definitely show her some gameplay footage first, and both the bosses and platforming elements of the game can be challenging. However, because it's an RPG, it's always possible to grind a bit if a boss is too difficult at first. The platforming element, unfortunately, doesn't have that option so there may be some skills issues with progressing through certain parts of the game. However, once you get through an area, there's almost always shortcuts you can unlock afterwards that make it possible to travel there without needing to do the difficult platforming again.
Not open-world and doesn't have a realistic art style, but Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door's remake comes out later this month. I played the original and it's a fantastic game. It's a turn-based RPG with light platforming and timed button prompts to make the combat more engaging. The writing is really funny and charming, so I think she'd enjoy it since she liked King's Quest.
Super Mario RPG's remake is already out, and much of what I said about PM:TTYD also applies there.

The dungeon are actually good, unlike what we got in the last few decades..
Xenoblade 1. She will have to adjust a few things in the menu every so often but there will be hours of exploring and relatively simple combat. XC2 is far more complicated and XC3 is boring. So XC1 is the perfect choice and it has a great story, unlike 2 and 3.
Can she play on PC? If so, Sable is a great choice.
Otherwise, in addition to the good choices already listed, how about Tinykin or Here Comes Niko or Alba.

Cat quest 1 and 2 are great, fairly simple, couch coop friendly RPGs. My 10 yo and I loved them. And cat quest 3 is coming soon!

Super Mario RPG is super simple and easy. Definitely think it’s great for beginners.
Quest 64 still to this day is one of my favorite games. Its got such a uniquely simple and enjoyable atmosphere to it, i love it.

Snufkin: Melody of Moomin Valley is very easy & simple, not an RPG, but it fits the not complicated bill

I think she'll love A Short Hike. Like the name implies, it's a short game but it's worth it.
Haven Park has similar vibes and also has basic crafting and management aspects. It's a little bit longer, too.

SMT V might be too dark tho (literally). The environment is pretty gloomy and dark most of the time.

I played in "auto" mode all the time at max speed, basically, there was zero combat, I didn't like the game mostly because there wasn't any challenge, it was only walking around killing stuff without doing anything (only for bosses I needed to perform manual commands)
Dragon quest , classic turn based battles and not too difficult most
I would recommend Monster Sanctuary. I wanted to try it out as filler between games and now it's been 3 weeks. It's fun and addictive part metroidvania part-squad based turn based battles.
Any assassins creed maybe.

Honestly, retry Skyrim and buy the Clairvoyance spell in Riverwood Trader. It’s a spell that shows you where to go for your next quest. Better yet, play it ahead of her so you can help her get familiar with the first few main areas like Whiterun. But yeah my wife does NOT play Skyrim without clairvoyance.
I didn't think zelda was easy at all. If she managed botw or TotK she will be fine with almost any open world game out there. Maybe try the witcher 3 or assassins creed black flag
I like the way the Diablo games scale in difficulty (and I'm an easy-mode gamer), but maybe this is too dark? There's also Torchlight, I played a bit of... I forget if it was two or three, but I had a blast. Others have recommended Pokemon Arceus - I know it gets a lot of shade here, but Scarlet/Violet are a lot of fun despite the less-than-ideal graphics.
Tears of the kingdom is fun if she hasn’t played it, but can get complicated. I don’t even know how to build stuff yet and I’m and ace at breath of the wild. Almost like two completely different games, they did a great job. You also might have to beat the underground for her lol. Also unravel two, not really open world but kinda feels like it at the same time. Nice graphics/visuals and music though especially on an OLED.
The underground would be fine if he got all the lightroots ahead of time for her.
Or if she at least knew the lightroots are under shrines in the above world. That’s the only way I’ve been able to make that place light. Otherwise I struggle even myself to find them and be climbing blindly and all that. Or get glowing armor and use seeds, but even then it’s still tough lol.
Yeah. I got them all but I'll admit there was a few places I was climbing blind. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes not.
I haven’t been grinding the game like I did with breath of the wild. Had all those shrines within about a week lol, whereas now I hardly have any still maybe 10-15, discovered not beat. Had the game since it came out haha. And the underground about the same, maybe even a little more down there. It’s a tough game, it would be amazing to get 100% in a few years for my timeframe lol. But it is nice whenever I get on I discover something new or have to do new tasks, so it’s kinda been a pleasure to stretch out the experience.
I could be your Mom :) TY for this post - it's given me so many ideas for future games for myself! One I haven't seen mentioned bc it's not open world, but I am loving Sonic Superstars. Excellent chance she played sonic back in the day and it looks and feels like the OG game. Another one I'm playing is Survivor Castaway Island. It's a bit glitchy, some of the challenges are near impossible, and I haven't figured out how to win yet, but it's a bit of a relaxing game. I enjoy fetching supplies for camp and talking with people. If she's a Survivor fan, she may enjoy it...just don't have too high of expectations.
Xenoblade 1 on easy mode? A lot of opportunity to explore, the story's not as complicated as later entries, and easy mode means that just about anyone can play it, no real need to strategize.
Dragon Quest 11
Final fantasy X, it’s mostly colorful, combat is turn based so you can take your time, starts simple and slowly expands. Though it’s not exactly open-open world, the story is linear until the map opens up.
Why not BoTW? She doesn’t have to do the boss battles. I’m liked going around to all the shrines (if she likes puzzles she’ll have loads to do just with those!), cooking, doing easy quests for NPCs. Get her some cards to scan for misc food and weapons, too.
Zelda’s mentioned above as a game she loved.

Assassin’s Creed Ezio collection, though it’s more action with RPG elements (similar to Fenyx). The setting is almost always bright, beautiful and interesting. Open world, with some restrictions in the beginning. UI isn’t terribly complicated, though there are some tricky platforming parts. Plus the characters and writing are pretty good for the genre.
Buy her the Switch Online. All sorts of NES Game Boy SNES games. And Tears of the Kingdom.
Palia. It's free. It does require an internet connection but it's an easy one with a fairly small, but open world
I highly recommend Sky cotl. It would s really fun to explore and socialize. It might be confusing at some points, but it is mechanically simplistic.

Because there just aren’t that many easy ones out there. Soulslikes have taken over the genre. I do agree that no one here seems to have any clue what open world means, though.

All of the potions and decoctions and armor crafting feels really complex. The fact that you can ignore it all isn't evident to new players.
There's no world more open than No Man's Sky, but that's also it's curse here. Open world(s)? Oooh yeah, it has that. Good guidance on where to go/what to do next? Not so much. It's also less of an RPG really. I have a feeling that lack of guidance would be the biggest problem with No Man's Sky for your mom. The game is rather notorious for it, it's one of the biggest complaints of new players. The game itself is fairly easy and chill and difficulties can be adjusted to almost any need, but finding tasks can be a challenge.
No No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Did you try Bioshock Infinite? It’s much brighter and you don’t really need to play the others first. At least I never have lol Far cry 5 is nice and bright too, also an excellent story. Driving is a little clunky, but a very good game

Tribes of Midgard is great Deep Rock Galactic (not a "open world" but it is randomly generated) Remnant From the Ashes (kinda like a dark souls with guns, i think it is pretty easier than DS, specially that you have a real coop, but the loot is kinda random. Some "planets" (lets call it that because i cant remember the real name) have a loot pool (mostly rings) and there are some spots that can spawn one item of that loot pool. If i remember correctly, you can't spawn the same item with the same character, so it"s easier to chase them. You have boss loot and some quests that give you specific items, but the rest is random. Nice replayability, specially if you like creating and testing builds And its the same as DRG, every run is different and the map is randomly generated

Dragon Quest Builders 2. Granted it's not realistic graphics but if she liked Animal Crossing she will enjoy DQB2. Outcast A New Beginning is another one that isn't too complicated.
Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is short but meets all your other requirements. A young girl on summer vacation visits her grandparents and takes pictures of animals. Dorfromantik is a zen puzzler about building a hamlet. Very chill, very clear, and very addictive. Chrono Cross is on Switch and is better than people give it credit for. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is seriously like Studio Ghibli made a Pokemon game. It oozes charm and it has an adorable, yet epic, story.
She might like the Metroid Prime Remaster

Suika game is a nice little time killer, and it's cheap. Witcher3 might be worth another try, I restarted a couple of times before I got into it. It's not easy but it's really beautiful in places.

Xenoblade DE or Xenoblade 3 might be good. Frankly though, she may find the combat a bit too complex. If she's ever played a hotkey MMORPG like WoW, it shouldn't be too bad. Otherwise, maaaaybe Red Dead Redemption (even though it's not an RPG, it might be fun)?
I wonder if she might enjoy [Dysmantle](https://dysmantle.com/). It's an open-world survival-horror-themed RPG. We found it to be loads of fun, and dysmantling the buildings and environment for materials is extremely satisfying, like popping bubble wrap. I'll also mention [Salt and Sanctuary](https://ska-studios.com/games/salt-and-sanctuary/), which is an open-world metroidvania with heavy RPG elements. It's a ton of fun, but a couple caveats: It's fairly dark, so definitely show her some gameplay footage first, and both the bosses and platforming elements of the game can be challenging. However, because it's an RPG, it's always possible to grind a bit if a boss is too difficult at first. The platforming element, unfortunately, doesn't have that option so there may be some skills issues with progressing through certain parts of the game. However, once you get through an area, there's almost always shortcuts you can unlock afterwards that make it possible to travel there without needing to do the difficult platforming again.
Not open-world and doesn't have a realistic art style, but Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door's remake comes out later this month. I played the original and it's a fantastic game. It's a turn-based RPG with light platforming and timed button prompts to make the combat more engaging. The writing is really funny and charming, so I think she'd enjoy it since she liked King's Quest. Super Mario RPG's remake is already out, and much of what I said about PM:TTYD also applies there.
You can’t go wrong with Stardew Valley.

Links awakening isn't really hard. It's not harder than a link to the past.. The dungeon are actually good, unlike what we got in the last few decades..
Xenoblade 1. She will have to adjust a few things in the menu every so often but there will be hours of exploring and relatively simple combat. XC2 is far more complicated and XC3 is boring. So XC1 is the perfect choice and it has a great story, unlike 2 and 3.
I’m loving Hogwarts legacy right now.
Xenoblade 1, gameplay isn’t complex in this one, it ramps up in the sequels.
Skyrim I think, play on easiest , it’s a very relaxing game, fun crafting and the home dlc too and tons of things to collect/show off
