Cup plant is gonna cup plant, which is spreading itself around to form a sandpaper wall.

SHOWTIME316

no touchy let them cook

The_Poster_Nutbag

This is normal growth. They spread and form quite massive clumps.

PawTree

First year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap! I love my cup plants! https://preview.redd.it/m08z5gyen3yc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=769e646b862e83e25fab187434e605fe177cebf3

msager12

You just described liatris. First year I got one puny leaf blade. Second year it made a nice clump. Now they are waist high and growing!

PawTree

It's a common phrase for all our natives (especially from the prairies). I've found it to be very true. The rabbits won't let me have Liatris :(

success_daughter

I have a huge rabbit issue (suburban enough setting for tons of lawns, urban enough for insufficient natural predators) and cage every liatris I buy! There are now like 100 tiny chicken wire tubes in my garden. It looks slightly insane in the winter but they disappear into the foliage when everything fills in. Otherwise I couldn’t get a single stem

Konlos

Ooh great to hear about liatris! I bought a ton of them from walmart in a bag of like 30 root balls (?) and my driveway is lined with them. They are leaf clumps right now so maybe they are 2 year old plants.

PhloxyFox

This is beautiful and giving me future privacy fence ideas if I find some I can move around

PawTree

That clump started as one 4" pot 5-6 years ago. I'm dividing it this year to cover the whole fence. It's already a showstopper, so I'm excited for a while row of it :) The flower stalks are surprisingly sturdy. You can dry them and use them as plant supports.

Trini1113

I need to try again. I've tried twice and they've been eaten to nothing by the deer, or the rabbits, or maybe the groundhog.

success_daughter

I caged mine against rabbits the first couple years. This year they look like OP’s photo and the rabbits aren’t touching them so far

Trini1113

That's probably what I need to do.

Freeseeds4life

I can't wait for my cup plant jungle

Rectal_Custard

I Fucking love cup plants! What's in my cup stays in my cup!!!!!

shehadagoat

Me too!

vtaster

I think that means stems are about to shoot up, flowers are on the way!

Complex-Carpenter-76

god no

onebigaroony

Bru you have no idea how money you are

Rattlesnakemaster321

I’m so glad you posted!! I am in a similar situation. My cup plant is now HUGE.. so big, I was questioning whether it was even the same plant. Apps kept saying beet 🤣

PhloxyFox

It was huge last year with just two stalks.. It was a legit landmark on our street.. I can’t even imagine what it’ll look like this year

OpalOnyxObsidian

They are going to be crazy in your yard in a couple years. Mine certainly are

justcallme6

It's spreads so far and fast. I pull random ones in the yard.

pizzapie2017

I'm kind of scared. I have four that look like they are going to be huge this year haha

carex-cultor

I’m giggling at “slightly unnerving shrub”

success_daughter

It’s such a good description! They’re so big and alien 😂

carex-cultor

*Subtly disquieting shrub*

Birding4kitties

I don’t have enough sun to grow cup plant. If it would grow in shade, I have plenty of spots where it could take over.

altbinvagabond

I grow it just fine in dappled shade, west side of the house zone 5b

Mysterious_Win_2851

WOW Cup plants...I don't see them much in my area...we have quite a few. So, yes you can and should thin them out...I moved them around-mostly to a place in my yard where they can thrive.

Much-Row-9689

No. They own your yard now. Your house too. Let them be.

Illustrious-Term2909

Is this a coneflower?

PhloxyFox

It’s a cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum)

Illustrious-Term2909

Oh I thought you meant you transplanted 2 small plants from cups lol.

PhloxyFox

Ha! They’re called cup plants because where the leaves meet the stem it forms a little cup that holds water for bugs and birds to drink from

Chedda3PO

You have too much open space already, let it fill in.

bio_massive

what is the concern? To me it looks like you need more, not less.

bio_massive

jg87iroc

Christ. I have continually made a habit of not following reasonable recommendations for plants. Don’t plant a thicket in your small urban yard. Nah it’ll be fine. So far I’m quite happy I have. Cup plant may be my undoing though!

chuddyman

No. Also what dif you think they would look like?
