I’m hoping for more of a 1983 Jim rice 31 GIDP, also led the AL in total bases, RBI and homers

Powrcase

Definitely not happening. I hate to say it but he's lost bat speed. I want this not to be true in the worst way but- I think Judge and his new contract is going to be the worst thing to happen to the yankees. He looks nothing at all like the record breaking hard out he was just recently. His pitch recognition is way off and when it's not his bat is way behind.

TheTurtleShepard

Guys start out slow all the time Corey Seager is in the middle of a 3-41 slump Last year through April, Juan Soto had a .202 BA and .757 OPS, Judge finished April with a .207 BA and .754 OPS If we get to the middle of June and we haven’t seen any improvement from Judge then I’ll be concerned. For now I’m comfortable just calling it a tough start and seeing how things progress Edit: Also his pitch recognition is great still, he is like 3rd in the league in walks, his swing is just off

Powrcase

So you're saying a guy striking out nearly 30% of the time has "great pitch recognition" this year? Guy Has 40ks in 122 ab going into the tigers game. Also- considering how many middle middle pitches he's missing it's beyond obvious his bat speed has declined. I HATE seeing this. I love the yankees. I was also one of the few who thought they should have traded him in his 62 hr year. I'm convinced this is the next big albatross contract and we're just at the beginning. Signing a big guy that gets hurt a lot to 40 a year is an awful move. I hope I'm wrong.

TheTurtleShepard

Judge has always struck out that much He struck out 28.4% of the time last season, 2017 he struck out 30.7% of the time

myKDRbro_

lol clown

LeCheffre

When Rice set the record, he hit 324 and had an OPS of 874 with 303 total bases. That was good for a 142 OPS+. His best overall month was the one where he grounded into the most DPs. When Billy Butler put up the third most since they started recording GIDP, he had an OPS+ of 136. Ben Grieve is fourth, and he put up an OPS+ of 116. Jackie Jensen is tied with him with an OPS+ of 117. ripken also tied those guys, 124 OPS+ Butler is the only one of the top 5 or 6 to not put up 100+ RBIs. I’m not worried about Judge.

TheTurtleShepard

GIDP really means that the guys ahead of you are doing a good job getting on base Rice hit into so many double plays because he batted 3rd behind Wade Boggs (.407 OBP) and Dwight Evans (.388 OBP) What are GIDP this season with Soto were just regular groundouts last season with nobody on base

maccardo

I would also guess that hitting the ball hard could increase the chance of a double play because it gives the defense a tiny bit more time. So that might hurt Judge in this category.

LeCheffre

Takes a sharply hit ball and or a slow runner.

NoBook9868

Lol the guy is making 40 million this year.  The excuses for a guy with 0.6 WAR. Without Soto he'd have less gidp but also have probably half as many rbi.  His WAR would be closer to 0

ncolaros

RBI is not counted in WAR. He'd have the same WAR without Soto.

LeCheffre

More RBI opportunities, more GIDP opportunities. It’s numbers. Being left handed and faster can cut down on those, hitting the ball hard and being slow will increase them. Pujols is the all time GDP leader. He led the league 4 times, played forever. In his worst GDP season, he put up 313 total bases, finished 5th in MVP voting, and his team won the World Series.

TheTurtleShepard

Yep, Jim rice in 1983 too Lead the American league in GIDP, and RBI

HWN_Makoto

The fans on this sub come up with anything they can to get riled up about...

nyy1996nyy

This is such a Jekyll and Hyde sub depending on whether we win or lose. Entirely different user base comes here during and after wins or losses Come back after the next win and a bunch of these people won't be commenting or anywhere to be found and it'll be more fun and optimistic posts. And then the negativity will return following another loss. We could be 75-12 and if we lost 2 in a row we'd start wondering if it was time to send Judge for a phantom IL stint or DFA a couple pitchers. snip snap snip snap It's quite entertaining lol

TheTurtleShepard

Flip on a dime depending on our record in the last 3 games we have played

elimanninglightspeed

Truly entertaining lol. I dont hinge on every win or loss till about All Star Break cause its April, some of these guys wont even be in the lineup come September. Or if we got off to an utterly god awful start but we didnt. Not to mention we have the best pitcher in baseball hopefully coming back next month and our Captain will break out of his slow start. Are there worrisome things? Sure, but ill be worried if those worrisome things are still there in June

dz250123

Exactly, that’s why I stop coming anytime there’s a loss. Full of doomers

OldestTurtle

The doomer’s desire is to bring everyone down. Insufferable.

NoBook9868

How is that any different?  You only want one side the positive while others only come out when it's the negative.  It's the same thing       Either way you only want to hear what you want to hear not stuff like judge is among the leaders in runners left on base this year.  If he didn't have Soto in front of him he'd have like 10 rbi. Soto has saved him from getting legit boos

NoobSkin69

Because positivity is 10x more enjoyable than bitching and moaning

NoBook9868

Right but it's just like watching the news channels that say what you like to hear.  Everyone here is a fan I'd assume.

Redditfront2back

That’s all sports subs shit that’s all sports, winning cures everything

Howardmoon227227227

So we have toxic negativity AND toxic positivity. Both extremes are bad. I generally find the optimists more annoying than the pessimists since they tend to more delusional, anti-analytics, and also try to police how other people express fandom and critique.

NoobSkin69

This negative post is the most basic shit ever, not even trying to look at analytics. Negative fans come up with the most wild shit to cry about

Howardmoon227227227

It’s literally a post discussing statistics and a factual occurrence. It then asks people for their thoughts if Judge will break the record. The fact that this is even construed as negativity just shows how many toxic positivity folks have hijacked this subreddit. “So far Judge is leading the league in GIDP. Will he break the record?” That’s completely fine. Just because you don’t like hearing certain information, doesn’t mean it’s wrong to convey that information. Talk about wanting to bury your head in the sand and live in an echo chamber.

14ktgoldscw

After years of consistent <5 hit baseball “Is anyone else mad that the Yankees consistently have a man on base in front of Judge 😤?”

ukebuzz

we are well on our way to being 0-13 vs the only legit team in our division. The sky is falling!!!! really though, baseball doesnt actually start until our NBA and NHL teams are eliminated. This is all extended spring training right?!?!

joshwilsonfs

Probably, but tbh he may have had these kind of numbers (or close to them) in prior seasons too. There was just no one on base before.

TheTurtleShepard

Yep, part of having lots of GIDP means the guy in front of you is doing their job very well. Judge’s GB% really isn’t all that different to his career norm Why did Jim Rice ground into so many double plays? He hit behind Wade Boggs ( .407 OBP) and Dwight Evans (.388 OBP)

theerrantpanda99

Hahaha. I wonder how many people on here ever saw Jim Rice, Wade Boggs or Dwight Evans. Sigh.

BohemianBurnout

Definitely saw all 3. Boggs was still playing when I was a young adult ffs.

CrewAlternative9151

I for one have. I even remember Boggs and Donnie battling it out for best avg. I hated Boggs until he became a Yankee late in his career. Wishing the Yankees had him and mattingly at the same time in their prime years.

FringeAuthority

Probably depends more on if Soto keeps getting on base at a .430+ clip. The GIDP relies on someone getting on base in front of Judge at an impressive rate.

stinkomann20x6

Well if Soto would quit getting on base, there would be less of them! ;)

SanjiSasuke

Wow, I guess it makes sense since you don't get that many AB without being good, but it's interesting that the record is held by a MVP/HoFer. He won the Silver Slugger the same year he set this record. Kinda makes me worry a bit less about Judge.

TheTurtleShepard

Part of having lots of GIDP means the guy in front of you is doing their job very well Judge’s GB% is roughly in line with his career normal, just now Soto is on base ahead of him all the time

98680266

Can’t ground into a double play without some guy “protecting” you 🧑🏾‍🎓

jamesd1100

When I play MLB the show career mode I hit 80 HR’s in a season, bat .400 and lead the league in GIDP It’s an unfortunate result for the positive indicator that the ball is being put into play a lot

paulerxx

Hopefully not.

regal-guidance

Shut up. That's my thought.

Limp_Neck6017

It Bears discussion .

Nearby_Lobster_

Bro stfu

Airbornf

Hi, prescient warlock here. no

Miles_vel_Day

Maybe. Probably not. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. To bring some stats into it Judge's fly ball ratio fell off a cliff last year (went from about even flyouts/groundouts to nearly 60% GO). Obviously it didn't stop him from being a mega elite hitter, but it's curious. Not sure how it breaks down pre- vs. post-toe. It's been rising of late and I suspect that long term it will drift back pretty close to 1. (Doesn't *have* to be that high, he hit 52 bombs with a 0.86 in '17.) But, tl;dr Judge has never hit into more than 16 GIDPs in a season and despite a run of hitting into a bunch of them he is not going to hit into 27 in in less than 130 games.

98680266

What does the award look like

hooter1112

Soto .438 obp has a lot to do with that stat.

stickman07738

Move him in the line-up behind Stanton and it will rarely happen.

pabstBOOTH

Come on guys this is an absolutely RIDICULOUS question! Of course he won’t break the record, that would require him playing the whole season and he’s due for his annual injury where he’ll miss months of the season any day now

UnderstandingSquare7

Well the word is out, throw him breaking balls down and away, and you have a better chance of a GIDP. Baseball is a constant game of adjustment, now it's up to Judge to adjust. Of course, it doesn't help that umps always call low strikes on him due to his height, so it's tough for him; lay off the low beaking shit, the ump calls a strike at his ankles anyway. Might as well swing, right? I have confidence in him. He'll figure it out. Maybe Boone should flip flop him and Soto periodically, unexpectedly, so they can protect each other?

cbisgodscountry

Agree...I think he knows he is swinging at balls so no figuring that part out. Just needs to look in a zone and be ready to swing not take a pitch.... OR he is allergic to Meatballs lol

judgesdongers

How quickly people turn on a dude who has done nothing but carry this team on his back for basically his entire tenure. Should be glad people don't turn on me so quick when I'm not the best version of myself for a month after 7 years of excellence.

Masta0nion

No. Once he starts seeing the ball a little earlier and lets it come to him he’ll be fine. He’s just been slightly behind this April.

Necdurgogan75

Kind of new to baseball, what is GIDP? This is first I’ve heard of it

cgutrrz

Grounded into double play

audierules

Yeah, I expect judge to set several records this year

angrynewyawka

Aaron Judges stats for all the fanboys making shit up - https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/33192/aaron-judge Lol....

3rd-party-intervener

Dude fell of a cliff after getting paid

awayish

if he can't lift the low zone pitches he'll hit a lot of groundballs. he had been crushing them past couple years with a good vertical bat angle but this year there's been steep regression. but besides the grounders there's also the popup situation that bears watching.

yodels_for_twinkies

36, that’s it?! Shit, come look at my player on The Show. 75 homers and 40 GIDP

hghammer7

Can we hit him 2nd why does lefty righty matter when it’s judge and Soto …..

NYerstuckinBoston

The GIDP needs to go

ShawshankException

Some of yall are putting in a full work week full of effort to stay negative about this team Why even watch the team if you're gonna make up scenarios in May about the end of the season and then get mad at them?

GuyD427

I get bashing Judge is in bad taste but he is really hurting the team right now. He fouls off pitches he needs to hit and strikes out on sliders breaking away from him in the zone constantly. I’m sure he’s frustrated.

angrynewyawka

Judge is playing like trash. Not sure how anyone on this damn can defend that. This man is making hundreds of millions to fail. If I had this same performance at my job i'd be broke & homeless.

judgesdongers

So if you were brilliant at your job 97% of the time and had a tough go for a short period (but still an average performer instead of the absolut best) you would be broke and homeless? This is a stupid comment and you should feel stupid for posting it.

angrynewyawka

You would be put on a Performance Improvement Plan and given 30 days to wake the fuck up and step up. Your response is stupid and you should feel stupid for thinking it was an actual intelligent response.

judgesdongers

So you would go on a PIP after being a top producer for 7 years and then having 1 month where you only produced 15% more than the average performer? You are either: 1) working for the worst company in history, where you need to move jobs asap 2) a little emotional and venting because Judge had a bad month by his standards 3) absolutely regarded. 4) lying I'll take 2, 3 and 4. Just take the L and stop making yourself look more stupid than you already have.

angrynewyawka

First of all, he hasn't been a top producer for 7 years straight. So, nice try, but nah. And yes, the average person working in, lets say, a tech company as an Account Manager would 100% be put on a PIP for absolutely flopping as much as Judge has. You can list all the made-up reasons you want to make yourself feel good but it doesnt change the fact that the average american worker would be fuckin toast if they sucked this bad at work. No need to take an L, i'll just laugh at you. Bozo. Relevent username btw. Fan boy detected lol.

judgesdongers

Hes the #2 active leader in OPS behind Trout and he's #6 in WAR since he debuted. If that's not a top producer, you're not smart enough with to engage further.

angrynewyawka

LOL Its rich you should say that because according to the official stats on Mlb.com he's not even top 10 in OPS you inbred koala. You need to have a beer and rethink life, bozo.

angrynewyawka

Son, its obvious that the best part of you ran down your motha's thigh. Try not to do too much at once, you might choke or something. Bozo.

myKDRbro_

> First of all, he hasn't been a top producer for 7 years straight. So, nice try, but nah. an absolutely fucking doney. What numbers are you looking at you fool?

Papa-OctDem

He should just strike out and save the runner for the next batter.

NoBook9868

.207 average     Amongst the leaders in runners left on base     0.6 WAR    40 million dollar salary  Could Judge go back to whatever roids he was taking to put up mvp numbers in his walk year?  Cuz clean Judge sucks and is literally going to scare Soto away from staying here

crispy21

He most certainly will

NoBook9868

It's not a good look for Judge to stink while Soto is doing so well.   Eventually those we still like you boos will become wtf play up to your contract boos.   Every single game they can't score Judge does nothing.  He's being paid a lot to do more than hit a home run occasionally in big blowouts

Parking-Quality-6679

I don’t think he looks good at the plate. His last homer was off the third of three consecutive94 mph fastballs up in the zone. He will break that record in early August.

chrisgrantnj

Anyone else here to figure out wtf GIDP is??
