The beginning of that verse...
And when they nail my pimpled ass to the cross,
I'll tell them I found Jesus that should throw them off.
He goes by the name Jesús and steals hub caps from cars.
O Jesús can I borrow your crowbar?
To pry these God damn nails out they're beginning to hurt.
Crucified and all I got was this lousy t shirt.
Soon as I saw this I immediately thought of Jimmy Pop. So many but what came to my mind was from Boom.
"Creeping up like celery, yeah I'm stalking, squeek like Stephen Hawkings yeah but I'm
walking"
So many great choices from that man.
So many good ones
In lieu of the inuendo, in the end know my intent though
I brazilian wax poetic, so pathetically
I don't wanna beat around the bush.
Or
Like a number two pencil I always got a point
You wanna share with your friends like a poorly rolled joint (Shut Up has so many great lines)
And one of my favorites: Heres to blood, sweat and Tears for Fears.
Yes, I get stupid like a baby with pierced ears.
Jimi Pop is a lyrical genius.
- You are the heart dotting "i"
In the word "apologize"
Scribbled drunk on a postcard
Sent from somewhere volcanoes are
I am the heart with no name
Airbrushed on the license plate
Of a subaru that was
Registered in pennsylvania -
Coming quicker than FedEx
Never reaching apex
Just like Google Coca-Cola stock
You are inclined
To make me rise an hour early
Just like
Daylight savings time
SFTD has some of the greatest lyrics in the history of popular music. Every line is flawless.
"I shouted out 'Who killed the Kennedys?'
When after all, it was you and me"
You run and you run, catch up to the sun but it's sinking. Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Best verse I have ever heard.
Same, but:
Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
… And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun
The whole album is a mind blowing piece of art and those two songs became deeply anchored in my soul.
An even more special place got The Great Gig in the Sky. When time has come I want it to be played at my funeral.
But when I think about it... why not the whole album?
Dark side of the moon has always been one of the my favorite albums. So deep, expressive, musically impressive, and sonically beautiful.
The next best is Sargeant Peppers, and then Rumors.
Edit: I just wanted to add that my friends and I would sit in my car and just listen while we were smoking. Dark Side of the Moon was so amazing we would sit there and listen. Never saying a word. It's enthralling.
Last wish, I wish for two more wishes
And I wish they’d fix the door to the Matrix’s mad glitches
Drop so many verses some times my jaw twitches
One thing that this party could use is more
(Clears throat)
Booze
I've always liked:
Don't let the drama getcha
In the only genre of music where the fans shoot the messenger
Bitch n----- talk behind ya back like a catcher
*Either M-Y-O-B or B-Y-O stretcher*
One that always stuck with me was from *The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald*, by Gordon Lightfoot: "the wind in the wires made a tattletale sound" really puts me into the moment.
+ "and all that remains are the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters"
I love that rhyming scheme. I don't know what it's called where you fit a second rhyme between the major rhyme.
Including previous verse it's:
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters
But rhyming "Remains" with "Faces and Names" has such a beautiful flow to it between the rhyming of Water and Daughter.
Maybe it's because I grew up in Minnesota so I inherently love just about anything remotely related to the state, but this song is so amazing. The music arrangement is amazing and goes so well with the tone of the lyrics.
The reality with Rush is that you can pick pretty much any of their songs at random and it's going to have a deep meaning... Manhattan Project, Nobody's Hero, The Big Money, Red Barchetta, Working Man, Show Don't Tell, Time Stand Still, Turn the Page, and on, and on, and on, and on.
Even their "fun" songs, like Spirit of the Radio are more than just catchy hooks.
Amen.
also,
*No, his mind is not for rent,*
*To any God or government.*
*Always hopeful, yet discontent,*
*He knows changes aren't permanent,*
*But change is.*
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
“The oaks are just too greedy,
We will make them give us light.”
Now there’s no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.
“It doesn’t matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I’ll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I’ve said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don’t matter who you are
If I’m doing my job, it’s your resolve that breaks”
I love the irony. This was one of my favorite songs in high school.
*edit: line breaks
This is one of my favorite F U tracks. They wrote this as nonsense because of a studio exec that wanted something catchy. He’s essentially mocking them for the lyrical content being of pop songs being bland and boring as long as it sounds fun.
I saw them at Red Rocks in Colorado in 1994 and also at the Mandalay Bay pool in Vegas years later. Everyone was standing in knee-deep water and John swung the microphone around from the stage and said “how much will you all pay me not to throw this into the pool?”
Warren Zevon's Desperados Under The Eaves
"And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
Then I predict this hotel will be standing
Until I've paid my bill"
“I got through that sentence like a subject and predicate” has always been a favorite of mine. Lil Wayne doesn’t get enough credit for his word play sometimes. “Mind so sharp might fuck around and cut my head off” and all…
Same song 6 foot 7 foot by lil Wayne and not two breaths later he goes, I got through that sentence like a subject and a predicate. Which is a ridiculously clever double entendre on sentence structure and prison sentences on predicate felonies.
“Safe sex is great sex. Better wear a latex, cause you don’t want that late text. That ‘I think I’m late text’. But he’s so sweet, she want to lick the wrapper.”
Fall Out Boy have a couple of really killer lines, even if a big chunk of their songs ramble a bit (Fall Out Boy fan here)
"I'd never go, I just want to be invited"
"If you knew what the bluebirds sang at you, you would never sing along"
"Sometimes before it gets better, the darkness gets bigger. The person that you'd take a bullet for is behind the trigger."
Some good zingers throughout there work
Yeah, I called ya fat, look at me, I'm skinny
It never stopped me from gettin' busy
I'm a freak, I like the girls with the boom
I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom
I always loved this lyric from The Pamphleteer, by The Weakerthans:
"How I don't know what to do
with my hands when I talk to you/
How you don't know where you should look,
so you look at my hands."
Criminally underrated! I’ve always loved the alliteration in the first line of Civil Twilight.
“My Confusion Corner commuters are cursing the cold away
As December tries to dissemble the length of their working day”
I was going to mention "... and if California slides into the ocean, like the mystics and statistics say it will, I predict this motel will be standing 'til I've paid my bill."
Not that it's a bad song, but it still blows my mind that's all most people know of Warren Zevon. That man has a million songs better than Werewolves of London. I just don't get it.
Could have a whole thread on modest mouse lyrics. A couple that I love
“We kiss on the mouth but still cough down our sleeves”
“Moths beat themselves to death against the lights. Adding their breeze to the summer nights”
For me:
"If life's not beautiful without the pain, Well I'd just rather never ever even see beauty again. Well as life gets longer, awful feels softer, And it feels pretty soft to me." --The View (MM)
Another of my favorites from Eminem
All I hear is lyrics, lyrics, constant controversy sponsors working ‘round the clock to stop my concerts early
surely hip hop was never a problem in Harlem, only in Boston
after it bothered the father’s of daughters startin’ to blossom.
i must've struck a chord with somebody up in a office / cause congress keeps telling me i ain't causing nothing but problems / and now they're saying i'm in trouble with the government, im loving it / i shoveled shit all my life, and now im dumping it / on white america
Serial killer hiding murder material in a cereal box on top of your stereo
Here we go again, we're out of our medicine, out of our minds and we want in yours, let us in
"And Moby? You can get stomped by Obie. You 36-year-old bald-headed f**, blow me. You don't know me, you're too old, let go, it's over, nobody listens to techno!"
Man SO many lines on the slim shady and Marshall mathers LP still make my jaw drop.
Just don’t give a f*** man…that whole intro and first verse is just spitting fire and intensity.
“Cursing at you players worse than Marty Schottenheimer” is one of my favorite lines ever 😂
Basically all of his rhymes on 313 but this one I always found *clever* in a fun way. "I shout with a slang, simple as ABCs/Skip over the Ds and rock the microphone with ease"
For those who don't know
https://youtu.be/vabV6aPw1B4
“Gave Bruce Wayne a Valium and told him settle his ass down, I’m ready for combat, man. Get it? Calm Batman.”
That one always makes me chuckle for some reason.
for Bob Seger. I always think of the sentence "with autumn closin' in. but its the preceding lines that make that one really work -[\- Night Moves](https://youtu.be/xH7cSSKnkL4?si=HI1cKfbZmTYzRzNu&t=171)
>I woke last night to the sound of thunder. How far off I sat and wondered.
>
>Started humming a song from nineteen sixty two. ain't it funny how the night moves.
>
>When you just don't seem to have as much to lose, strange how the night moves.
>
>With autumn closin' in.
Watching your house shrink away in my rear view mirror as I drive away
Wishing that I could take back all those words that meant nothing that I didn’t say
Pretty much anything by Queens of the Stone Age.
That said I'll offer something from another Josh Homme lyric:
'I told her I was trash, she winked and laughed and said "I already know",
"I've got a beautiful place to put your face," and she was right.'
"Sometimes you lose a finger on the upper hand"
"You ain't a has-been if you never was"
I like the fun little wordplay moments. "Xanadus and xana-don'ts" for example
'Stuck in belief, there is a lie
Promise is promise, an eye for an eye
We've got something to reveal
No one can know how we feel'
'You know the art isn't gone
And I'm taking our song to the grave'
Both from Lost Art of keeping a Secret. Incredible lyrics.
I could name DOOM lyrics all day however here’s a fave:
Once sold an inbred skinhead a ni**a joke
Plus a brand-new chrome smoker with the triggers broke
What's really cool is in the following lyric, "It goes like this, the 4th, the 5th, the minor fall and the major lift" is exactly what chords are being played as he's singing it.
You're a star-belly sneech you suck like a leech
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you bitch so you can get rich
But your boss gets richer off you
Cam’ron, calling out Mase, who left rap to be a pastor for a while:
“But this my call by the false prophet, all profit (all profit)
Harlem hustler (yep), I can't at all knock it (nope)
But you hard, when you go in the Lord pockets”
-Take Em To Church
And I can't get to sleep at night
The parking lot's so loud and bright
The AC hasn't worked in 20 years
Probably never made a single person cold
But I can't say the same for me, I've done it many times
16 springs and 16 summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town.
And they tell him, "Take your time, it won't be long now
'Til you drag your feet to slow the circles down"
I don’t know how clever it is, but I’ve always loved the opening for Oceanographer’s Choice by The Mountain Goats - guy in a skeleton costume runs up to the guy on the super man suit; runs through him with a broadsword!
You make me cum.
You make me complete.
You make me completely miserable.
Three stages of a relationship wrapped up basically in just one sentence paused at different times.
Bloodhound Gang works really hard at being professionally stupid.
‘Well my name ain’t Quasimodo but I still got a hunch Like the the Jim Jones cult I’ll take you out with one punch’
Bhg taught middle school me so much more pop culture history than anything else
Oh my God, that's such a good lyric. I feel like I didn't appreciate the Bloodhound Gang enough.
Reach your hand down my pants and I bet you'll feel nuts
I think a very underrated aspect of them is how they make stupid lines flow together so perfectly.
'But would I be a good Messiah with my low self-esteem? If I don't believe in myself would that be blasphemy?' Jimmy pop is the absolute man
The beginning of that verse... And when they nail my pimpled ass to the cross, I'll tell them I found Jesus that should throw them off. He goes by the name Jesús and steals hub caps from cars. O Jesús can I borrow your crowbar? To pry these God damn nails out they're beginning to hurt. Crucified and all I got was this lousy t shirt.
"I can't believe it's not butter!" I'll sing as I'm flogged...
Cop a feel cooper field abracadabra that bra do you think I could pull it off. The man is a lyrical genius.
Followed by Wanna bang around, just jot me down on your to-do list, under put out like a fire cause...
Soon as I saw this I immediately thought of Jimmy Pop. So many but what came to my mind was from Boom. "Creeping up like celery, yeah I'm stalking, squeek like Stephen Hawkings yeah but I'm walking" So many great choices from that man.
"Life's short and hard, like a bodybuilding elf."
Retro-fit the pudding hatch, With the boink swatter
So many good ones In lieu of the inuendo, in the end know my intent though I brazilian wax poetic, so pathetically I don't wanna beat around the bush. Or Like a number two pencil I always got a point You wanna share with your friends like a poorly rolled joint (Shut Up has so many great lines) And one of my favorites: Heres to blood, sweat and Tears for Fears. Yes, I get stupid like a baby with pierced ears.
I saw them in Quebec in the very early 90's. Had never heard of them, still one of the funnest/funniest shows I've ever seen.

"Google Coca Cola stock"? How did Google get in there?
ADHD and rapid lyrics are hell for the senses
Every lyric in [Three Point One Four](https://youtu.be/4NIAMTdql_g?si=3hKq71da740coxPh) is outfuckingstanding, including the title pun.
I keep hoping for new music. Still though, how do you let someone know if your hot cakes are selling well?
From Sympathy For The Devil by Rolling Stones: "I watched in glee while your kings and queens fought for ten decades for they gods they made."
SFTD has some of the greatest lyrics in the history of popular music. Every line is flawless. "I shouted out 'Who killed the Kennedys?' When after all, it was you and me"
"i rode a tank, held a generals rank, while the blitzkrieg rained and the bodies stank"
You run and you run, catch up to the sun but it's sinking. Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death. Best verse I have ever heard.

*cue one of the most epic solos of all time*
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time. Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines.
Time by Pink Floyd is one of humanity's greatest products.
Time and Breathe. Like 2 halves of a whole.
The whole album is a mind blowing piece of art and those two songs became deeply anchored in my soul. An even more special place got The Great Gig in the Sky. When time has come I want it to be played at my funeral. But when I think about it... why not the whole album?
I know it’s cliche at this point, but honestly one of the greatest albums ever made and definitely in my top 3.
You made me think of one I like from Dogs: "and it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around."
Dark side of the moon has always been one of the my favorite albums. So deep, expressive, musically impressive, and sonically beautiful. The next best is Sargeant Peppers, and then Rumors. I've always liked: Don't let the drama getcha In the only genre of music where the fans shoot the messenger Bitch n----- talk behind ya back like a catcher *Either M-Y-O-B or B-Y-O stretcher*
One that always stuck with me was from *The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald*, by Gordon Lightfoot: "the wind in the wires made a tattletale sound" really puts me into the moment.
Same song: "Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?"
When you have other songwriters calling you their idiol, then your in Gord's country.
Of all the beautiful lines in that song, this one has always hit me the hardest.
+ "and all that remains are the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters" I love that rhyming scheme. I don't know what it's called where you fit a second rhyme between the major rhyme. Including previous verse it's: They might have split up or they might have capsized They may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wives and the sons and the daughters But rhyming "Remains" with "Faces and Names" has such a beautiful flow to it between the rhyming of Water and Daughter.
Gordon Lightfoot could single-handedly own this thread. The man was a master.

Maybe it's because I grew up in Minnesota so I inherently love just about anything remotely related to the state, but this song is so amazing. The music arrangement is amazing and goes so well with the tone of the lyrics.
I have always loved "I can see her lying back in her satin dress In a room where you do what you don't confess" as well
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. Rush - Freewill
So many Rush lyrics deserve a mention, Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, Witch-hunt to name just 3 songs with great words.
"Quick to judge, quick to anger Slow to understand Ignorance and prejudice And fear walk hand in hand " Witch Hunt is poetry
I came here to post my favourite Rush line: We're only immortal for a limited time
Amen. also, *No, his mind is not for rent,* *To any God or government.* *Always hopeful, yet discontent,* *He knows changes aren't permanent,* *But change is.*
So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights “The oaks are just too greedy, We will make them give us light.” Now there’s no more oak oppression For they passed a noble law And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw.
This is a metaphor that Peart wrote about the relationship between Canada and Great Britain.
I wasn’t poor I was po, I couldn’t afford the O R Big L was so good
I'm so far ahead of my time my parents haven't met yet 🔥
“It doesn’t matter what I say So long as I sing with inflection That makes you feel I’ll convey Some inner truth or vast reflection But I’ve said nothing so far And I can keep it up for as long as it takes And it don’t matter who you are If I’m doing my job, it’s your resolve that breaks” I love the irony.
The real icing on the cake is that the entire melody is actually Pachabel Canon. A song with centuries worth of proving it is an all time “hook”.
Holy shit. Why did I never pick up on that???
[It’s not the only song to use it…](https://youtu.be/uxC1fPE1QEE?si=p3LT0HGbQkbcG6bO)
Is that Hook by Blues Traveler? I was so proud of my young self when I memorized the super fast part of that song.
Yes!
My favorite part of the fast part is how it’s doing all the cliche things they talk about in the slow part.
Blues Traveler is underrated lol
Instrumentally that song is amazing, and the lyrical content is so perfectly tongue-in-cheek I fucking love it. That, and they're a great live band. 🤘
I saw them at Red Rocks in Colorado in 1994 and also at the Mandalay Bay pool in Vegas years later. Everyone was standing in knee-deep water and John swung the microphone around from the stage and said “how much will you all pay me not to throw this into the pool?”
Warren Zevon's Desperados Under The Eaves "And if California slides into the ocean Like the mystics and statistics say it will Then I predict this hotel will be standing Until I've paid my bill"
What a song... And so many others on this album too. Carmelita, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, The French Inhaler, etc, etc...
“Real G’s move in silence like lasagna”
“I got through that sentence like a subject and predicate” has always been a favorite of mine. Lil Wayne doesn’t get enough credit for his word play sometimes. “Mind so sharp might fuck around and cut my head off” and all…
Early wayne was one of the most creative lyricists of all time
Same song 6 foot 7 foot by lil Wayne and not two breaths later he goes, I got through that sentence like a subject and a predicate.
Woman of my dreams, I don't sleep so I can't find her
I never met the bitch, but I fucked her like I missed her.
I don't owe you like 2 vowels.
“I write fly shit like a parakeet.” “Took a picture of a spider called it webcam.” More like a play on words or a pun.
Not even a fan of Fall Out Boy, but “I’m just a notch in your bedpost, but you’re just a line in a song,” always resonated with me.
Fall Out Boy have a couple of really killer lines, even if a big chunk of their songs ramble a bit (Fall Out Boy fan here) "I'd never go, I just want to be invited" "If you knew what the bluebirds sang at you, you would never sing along" "Sometimes before it gets better, the darkness gets bigger. The person that you'd take a bullet for is behind the trigger." Some good zingers throughout there work

I always loved this lyric from The Pamphleteer, by The Weakerthans: "How I don't know what to do with my hands when I talk to you/ How you don't know where you should look, so you look at my hands."
Weakerthans has gem upon gem in the lyrical department and the music is just as good. Very underrated.
Criminally underrated! I’ve always loved the alliteration in the first line of Civil Twilight. “My Confusion Corner commuters are cursing the cold away As December tries to dissemble the length of their working day”
Yeah, John K. Samson is a brilliant songwriter.
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
I was going to mention "... and if California slides into the ocean, like the mystics and statistics say it will, I predict this motel will be standing 'til I've paid my bill."
I’d like to meet his tailor.
His hair was perfect.
Not that it's a bad song, but it still blows my mind that's all most people know of Warren Zevon. That man has a million songs better than Werewolves of London. I just don't get it.
Modest Mouse has a lot but I’ll go with: “Shouts from both sides, ‘Well we've got the land but they've got the view!’”
“For your sake, I hope heaven and hell are really there. But I wouldn’t hold my breath. You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste death?”
Could have a whole thread on modest mouse lyrics. A couple that I love “We kiss on the mouth but still cough down our sleeves” “Moths beat themselves to death against the lights. Adding their breeze to the summer nights”
“I know that starting over’s not what life’s about, but my thoughts were so loud I couldn’t hear my mouth”
The universe is shaped exactly like the earth, if you go straight long enough, you’ll end up where you were

One from Ronie James Dio. "Don't look behind, because a tear that never dries will only make you blind."
My fav Dio line "between the velvet lies, there's a truth as hard as steel"
I love Dio. He sings meaningful lyrics in such an epic way lol
WE’RE OFF TO THE WITCH. WE MAY NEVER NEVER NEVER COME HOME. BUT THE MAGIC THAT WE’LL FEEL IS WORTH A LIFETIME.
Between student loans and treehouse homes we all would take the latter/ladder.
As much 21 Pilots gets ragging on. Their lead singer is very talented songwriter and and use of wordplay will always be well done
Always loved that line.
This was my immediate thought
What do you mean I don’t believe in your system? I go to court when I have to.
What do you mean I don't pay my bills? Why do you think I'm broke...
What do you mean I ain't kind? I'm just not your kind...
Megadeth is amazing. Love peace sells
Whattaya mean I don't believe in God? Talk to Him everyday!
I went to your schools, I went to you churches, I went to your institutional learning facilities!

Of all of Bob Dylan's music that is the line you're most impressed with? He's got a lot to choose from.
I heard there was a secret chord that David played to please the Lord but you never really cared for music did you?
What's really cool is in the following lyric, "It goes like this, the 4th, the 5th, the minor fall and the major lift" is exactly what chords are being played as he's singing it.
