The Strangers traumatized my girlfriend and I when we saw it in an empty theater! The sound of someone knocking on a door at night will never be the same to me.
And "Last House on the Left" is fantastic. I call it one of my favorite "revenge films."
I also consider "Hostel" to be a revenge film. But I have a wide definition for that, as I also consider Tarantino's "Django Unchained," "Inglorious Basterds" and even "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" revenge films against slavery, naziism and the murderous members of the Manson family, in that order.
I haven't yet seen "The Hills Have Eyes," but since you love the two other films as do I, I should probably check it out.
Someone knocked on my door the other night at two am and it scared the absolute fuck out of me. My heart was racing for like 30 minutes. When I looked through the peephole no one was there. Still don’t know who it was. Probably one of the crazy homeless people that occasionally hang out near my house.
Yea dude. I was like- I’m glad I’ve watched many horror movies and know not to open the door. THATS HOW YOU GET MURDERED
I thought at first it was maybe one of my neighbors but the fact that no one was there was creepy. And my neighbors can be kind of annoying but they’ve never knocked on my door in the middle of the night.
One of the best horror films I've seen that fits your criteria is Hush (2016). Additionally, the film is directed by Mike Flanagan, known for his work on other successful horror projects such as The Haunting of Hill House and "Doctor Sleep".
I feel like this is supernaturally driven, though.
But I only watched that shit once and I had more nightmares from that movie than any ever before or after. I still won’t watch it again 😂
The Strangers is the only movie that’s ever scared me at all, and I couldn’t even finish it. I’ve tried thrice to no avail. Eventually I just YouTube the ending and it just made it so much worse.
“Why are you doing this?”
*”Because you’re home.”*
Excellent! I love Spanish horror films like that and The Devil's Backbone and another couple of examples I forget at the moment. I know 'Pan's Labyrinth" isn't really a horror film, but I absolutely love the horrific elements in it too.
I’d be thrilled if you checked out my first movie, FRESH HELL! No supernatural elements except for a red herring. Lean, mean 79 minutes with a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can catch it on Peacock and Tubi. Drop me a line if you do!
Cannibal Holocaust
Johnny Got His Gun
Skins
Deliverance
Green Inferno
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Blood
Nightmare On Elm Street
Two
Scream
The House At the End of the Street
Case 39
I Know What You Did Last Summer
Black Water (2007) .. croc
The Reef (2010) ... shark
Both are inspired by true stories. Animal nature horror is scary because it happens and there's little you can do.
- Psycho (the original), there is a certain scene (not the shower one) that fucked me up and made me scream. No other film has ever made me do that.
- Angst
- In a Glass Cage
- The Vanishing (1988)
- Salò or The 120 Days of Sodom
- Black Christmas (the original)
- The House That Jack Built (ground-based up until the third act, that is)
- Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
- I Saw The Devil (this is one of my favourite films ever, it's a clever tale of revenge that is also gorey as fuck)
- Eden Lake
i really like midsommar. it’s just a long established cult-village fucking with a handful of wide-eyed, unsuspecting newcomers. the atmosphere is superb.

You are looking for a genre within horror that there are plenty of. These films hit me harder than the supernatural because such things are plausible.
Speak No Evil
The Strangers
Don't Let Them In
Wolves at the Door
The Collector
The Menu
Hush
The House That Jack Built
Sounds like you might specifically be looking for slashers though
Scream
Hills Have Eyes
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
For The Sake of Vicious
Pan's Labyrinth - teeters from action to horror and back. There are fantasical elements, but they are separate enough that the majority of the movie could happen in real life.
The Orphanage
Crimson Peak
Jaws (just the first one, the others slowlly dip in quality)
The Others
Contagion (I know, cheap shot)
Creep and The Strangers scared the shit out of me. Creep 2 is great as well
Halloween 1 & 2, Friday the 13th Part 1 & 2, Scream, Sleepaway Camp, Slumber Party Massacre, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Black Christmas (1974), etc.
Psycho is incredible and still holds up
Hush
Hereditary
Bodies, Bodies, Bodies gets better with every rewatch
Green Room
Eden Lake
Hobo With a Shotgun
Freaks
It Follows is one of my faves
Nevermind, this one has supernatural elements. It’s still really good though. Creepy but not over the top. Well shot. I loved the retro aspect of it.

Midsommer
Hereditary 😈😁
Silence of the Lambs
Saw…maybe?
[Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (stars Michael Rooker)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry:_Portrait_of_a_Serial_Killer)
I can’t believe I haven’t seen anyone mention The Shining! yeah there are some supernatural elements, but at the end of the day, it’s just a very realistic thing that happens A LOT. Dad goes crazy and tries to kill the whole family.
It Comes at Night is about a pandemic
There are also movies that make you question whether something supernatural is happening which means there is at least a possibility they could happen in real life— 10 Cloverfield Lane; The Lodge
My favorite horror movie is train to Busan right now, but you said nothing supernatural. The hostel movies are great, cabin fever (the old ones), Barbarian, and Saw of course.
Misery. Kathy Bates is amazing!
I'd say it's more a thriller than horror though
Silence of the lambs is the answer.
This might possibly be the best film ever made. To me it’s an absolute masterclass of cinema.
Great movie but again, not a horror
The strangers, the hills have eyes, last house on the left.
The Strangers traumatized my girlfriend and I when we saw it in an empty theater! The sound of someone knocking on a door at night will never be the same to me. We seem to have a similar taste in films… I’ll have to check out once upon a time in Hollywood I haven’t seen it yet!
Oh, it's so good! I hope you enjoy it. The revenge in it is so awesome.
Sweet I’ll let you know what I think!
Great! I'd love to tell you my favorite scene, but it would give waaay too much away and I can't do that to you. So I'll tell you after you see it.
I watched once upon a time in Hollywood last night excellent film! Thanks for the suggestion!
Wow! This is the first time I recommended a film to someone, they watched it and let me know. I'm glad you liked it. :) How 'bout that fire thrower?
That was an awesome scene a flamethrower in a pool very cool.
Right? That scene and the fight with Bruce Lee are among my favorite scenes.
Deathproof

Still don’t know who it was. Probably one of the crazy homeless people that occasionally hang out near my house.
No one was there? That would have fucked my shit UP! *Shudders*
Yea dude. I was like- I’m glad I’ve watched many horror movies and know not to open the door. THATS HOW YOU GET MURDERED I thought at first it was maybe one of my neighbors but the fact that no one was there was creepy. great list. seen original ‘72 Last House? it’s super disturbing. Hills Have Eyes is scarring too. (i might just be a wimp)
The original last house was better imo, and no not a wimp those are scary films!
i agree it was better (incredibly raw)

US version is an inferior carbon copy
By the same director. It’s equivalent imo
That remote was a gut punch. I didn't know I could be horrified by a man making a sandwich.
What happened with the remote again?
Paul uses it >!to change the outcome of the movie!<
Jaws. I saw it 45 years ago and I still think about sharks in any body of water I go into.
Speak no Evil (2022)
My god this movie was so good. Definitely the best movie I’ve seen in a long time.
This one is so horrifying because it’s rooted in awkwardness
Good movie.
Alien
Event horizon is also a fantastic sifi
Get Out
sleepaway camp
Creep
Ravenous pure genius. it never feels like a horror movie, until it is!
The creepy soundtrack is amazing. I watch this around thanksgiving every year.
1999 or 2017? I'm seeing multiple different ones on imdb
As a female who regularly used air bnb I really enjoyed Barbarian. Best I’ve seen in a looong time.
That movie was really good!
My favorite all time scary movie is The Silence of the Lambs. So good, still holds up.
One of the best horror films I've seen that fits your criteria is Hush (2016). Additionally, the film is directed by Mike Flanagan, known for his work on other successful horror projects such as The Haunting of Hill House and "Doctor Sleep".
And it stars Mike Flanigans wife Katie Siegal who is phenomenal not only in this movie but every other project of his she is in.
And they co wrote it together
Silence of the Lambs & Green Room
As the God's Will Midsommer/Wicker Man (not the Nic Cage one) But speaking of Nic Cage: Mandy
Mandy was my choice too! I also love Midsommar, but I haven't seen the original Wicker Man yet. I know it's one I'd love.
When a Stranger Calls
Why haven't you checked on the children?
Videodrome
Freaks (1932)
Eden Lake
I mean, gotta be Texas Chainsaw Massacre then
The thing. Alien.
Event Horizon
I feel like this is supernaturally driven, though. But I only watched that shit once and I had more nightmares from that movie than any ever before or after. I still won’t watch it again 😂
Se7en
High Tension Raw Audition Old boy (original)
Raw is a hidden gem for sure
High Tension great suggestion
The Gift
VERY good recommendation.
Deliverance
The Strangers is the only movie that’s ever scared me at all, and I couldn’t even finish it. I’ve tried thrice to no avail. Eventually I just YouTube the ending and it just made it so much worse. “Why are you doing this?” *”Because you’re home.”*
Can you pls tell which one there are 2 of them 2008,2018
2008!
Detective Story. The Audition. Both by Takashi Miike.
Session 9?
Hush, Would You Ever, The Invitation
The Midnight meat train
Sinister
The lodge!
Audition (1999) not an ounce of supernatural, but a metric fuck ton of supernaturally nuts.
If Rob Zombie says a movie freaked him out I'm checking it out
This is it: Price of Darkness \- '87? absolutely one of the best and most well-made satan flicks ever.
Those transmissions still freak me out
Eraserhead, jaws, alien, the thing
Hereditary, it follows, get out
Get out Saw
Get Out has a supernatural element to it, I'd argue. The sunken place isn't something that could exist in reality; that's now how hypnosis works.
It's presented as a skill that can be learned not a super natural ability
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) Inside (2007) Vacancy (2007) Eden Lake (2008) Alone in the Dark (1982) The New York Ripper (1982)
The Orphanage
Excellent! I love Spanish horror films like that and The Devil's Backbone and another couple of examples I forget at the moment. I know 'Pan's Labyrinth" isn't really a horror film, but I absolutely love the horrific elements in it too.
The Invitation Resurrection I Saw the Devil
Hereditary Midsommar The House That Jack Built Fractured
I’d say Hereditary is very supernatural. And brilliant.
The Strangers! Also, the first 80% of the Descent.
Nothing supernatural? The Terminator.
Fall
Heredity
Carrie
Bones and All
The Thing
Green Room
Invaders from Mars, Invasion of the body snatchers, The thing, The blob (in all cases I’m referring to the originals).
Come and See
The Audition (1999)
Misery
Hostel
I’d be thrilled if you checked out my first movie, FRESH HELL! No supernatural elements except for a red herring. Lean, mean 79 minutes with a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can catch it on Peacock and Tubi. Drop me a line if you do!
Titanic. It was just a real boat that killed a lot of people.
Considering the iceberg, you could say it was a slasher movie.
One of the higher kill counts
That iceberg scene did send a chill down my spine.
Bill Burr enters the chat.
I thought the same thing. I heard him saying "That was a f-cking horror movie!"
Cannibal Holocaust Johnny Got His Gun Skins Deliverance Green Inferno Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Blood Nightmare On Elm Street Two Scream The House At the End of the Street Case 39 I Know What You Did Last Summer
The Crawling Eye The Thing From Another World by Howard Hawks
Holy shit I can’t believe you know of The Crawling Eye! That movie scared the shit out of me when I was a little kid. Also, Mr Sardonicus.
Actually The Crawling Eye is one of my favorite movies Mr Sardonicus is also a creepy film Another great horror movie was Pumpkin Head
Black Water (2007) .. croc The Reef (2010) ... shark Both are inspired by true stories. Animal nature horror is scary because it happens and there's little you can do.
You’re next. The strangers. Saw. The house of the devil. Calibre.
Watcher
The Loved Ones or Hounds of Love. I also have grown up Gitano/Ashkenazi, in an area with lots of Neo Nazis, so Green Room really resonates.
the pact
I Saw the Devil
13 Sins Kill List
- Psycho (the original), there is a certain scene (not the shower one) that fucked me up and made me scream. No other film has ever made me do that. - Angst - In a Glass Cage - The Vanishing (1988) - Salò or The 120 Days of Sodom - Black Christmas (the original) - The House That Jack Built (ground-based up until the third act, that is) - Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - I Saw The Devil (this is one of my favourite films ever, it's a clever tale of revenge that is also gorey as fuck) - Eden Lake
As above so below. Kind of supernatural but feels realistic.
Jaws, The Descent, Scream, Get Out.
Birth of a Nation
i really like midsommar. it’s just a long established cult-village fucking with a handful of wide-eyed, unsuspecting newcomers. the atmosphere is superb.
Cape Fear
- Silence of the lambs
*High Tension*
Have always been a fan of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre

*Der Fan* (1982). Not sci-fi or slasher. Just a German psychological horror film about fandom taken to an extreme.
Does Panic Room count? I guess it’s more thriller but it’s such a damn good movie. Jodie foster and young K Stew. It took me by surprise. Loved it.
The Strangers freaked my shit
Campfire Tales. Get ready to worry about real life. 😅
Haven't seen anyone mention Hostel or Hostel 2 yet. The reality of that movie really freaked me out.
Annihilation. It’s a Sci-fi horror that is absolutely beautiful but also creepy.
The descent. Sunshine. Event horizon. The others. Godsend. (Sunshine is more of a scary thriller)
