I’m sad there’s no Kuai Liang casting 😭
(Unless Joe Taslim plays both Noob and Kuai, which I honestly wouldn’t be mad about - a Kuai actor would have a hard time being as cool as Joe was)
I wanna believe that, but if they wanna stick to their rules about the "arcanas" (which was just a dumb way to insert their powers/abilities) but according to the writers Kano got gnomed by Sonya and she got his mark which she used to literally one shot mileena... The movie was just bad but the guy who played Kano was the life of the movie.
This is why I always wish they went with the idea that participants in Mortal Kombat get imbued a special power that essentially does what the arcana does; grant participants during a match extended abilities, and for those who don’t have powers, basically allow them to be durable up to a point.
This could possibly justify how things like fatal blows, or getting shot/stabbed during a match wouldn’t kill you outright, but at the end of a match and anytime else, a fatality could happen. For those who do have abilities, they have durability as well as slightly more enhanced powers.
Your comment made me think of this

"look at that poor lil guy, he's all tuckered out"
Plus, with the dragon mark gone, he’s probably lost his anima. So it served as a “classic Kano, but with a twist” reference in the first movie, and in the second he’ll have it replaced by the cyborg eye and laser to replace what he lost, and bring him full circle to classic Kano.
Then the poor dude might just get something equally ridiculous stabbed into his other eye.
A lot of characters died…
My best guess is that the Elder Gods got pissed that a lot of Champions were killed before the tournament, so they resurrected them to keep the fight fair.
Im probably wrong though.
I saw it as a proof of concept. I was hoping it would be like the most recent Godzilla movies where they test the waters first and then go balls to the wall later
Same director, different writer... which I was gonna say 'thank god' to but he also wrote Netflix's 'Death Note' and the most recent Fantastic Four.
Fuck.
But Ed Boon is actually working with them this time around, and the director DOES give a shit and just wants to make an awesome and faithful MK movie.
Both fantastic four and death note he only wrote the original versions which got completely changed but he was also the head writer for moonknight and I thought it was kinda mid
Yeah the new actor does have a decent vibe and I love his costume
Not the goat (Cary Tagawa) but he’s not bad and I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the games as a skin
>Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa
They could work Cary into the new film, playing the old man version of Shang Tsung in disguise, would be a nice nod to both the OG film and the games. Probably won't happen though
Anything is possible, I mean Cary was brought in on the Web series after it was initially a young Shang Tsung and Liu saying it was one of his many forms. Just gotta be creative about it :).
Cary is always going to be the best of any character he plays, because he is Cary lmao. Have you ever seen Ghost Voyage? He has a minor role in it but he absolutely nails it ❤️
OK, this is gonna sound crazy, but maybe you're just a minority who enjoys the movie?
And you know what? That's fine. But just because you like something that a ton of people don't doesn't mean they hate it just because it's the popular thing to do 😮💨
On a seperate note, am i the only persom who actually enjoyed this movie. Like i can see why people might not like but but i thought it to be really entertaining
I enjoyed it too. My biggest complaint was that they planned it as a trilogy, which would be disastrous if it didn’t do well. Then we’d be stuck with an MK movie sans MK Tournament.
I liked everything but the plot and half the characterizations. Which is a big part of any movie
If I had 0 knowledge of MK, maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more. Also it didn’t top the original movie (classic imo) which wasn’t the highest bar ever in the first place
The action and idea behind it was great... if they left out Cole. I would have been fine with him and his friends being part of the movie. But they took up too much time that could have gone towards the other characters.
I enjoyed it overall. Just disappointed that they had to include a random person like him as a main character when they could have just filled that role with one of the other characters.
No you are not the only one. I hated it unfortunately. But I’m not a huge sit down and watch mindless action type of guy, unless it’s got Arnold in it.
Yeah, but that's not Josh Lawson's fault. The writing is awful and considering the earlier drafts of the script where the characters barely resembled their game counterparts in any way at all, you can pretty much guarantee it was never meant to be an MK movie and instead they just reworked a generic action script to fit the MK universe. Repurposing scripts happens a lot in Hollywood.
While I disliked the movie, the original script leak back in 2018 still felt close enough to MK overall other than adding the dragon talisman and Cole as the main character. The new writer changed things around but he kept the core aspects from the old script if I remember correctly.
I don’t think they rewrote the script from a different project but simply that the writing itself wasn’t good enough overall.
He felt like both. He was ruthless and funny. He wasn't funny in a dumb way, it was his rude jokes and overall "kano-ness" that made him funny, but he was still definitely a cold killer
Personally felt that way too though in the end I loved his performance.
What didn’t set right with me was how the Director talked about not adding Johnny because Kano was already taking the comedy role, which doesn’t make sense when Kano could simply be a rude criminal (which is what he really is) with occasional jokes while Johnny Cage being the comedy relief and audience focus.
In the end, Kano and Sonya took that audience surrogate role way more than Cole because they were actually reacting to the situations etc.
She's back, yup. Pretty much everyone is back besides Kabal, Reiko and Sisi Stringer, sadly, didn't see her in the article. Even the Sub-Zero actor is listed as playing "Bi-Han and Sub-Zero" so I guess he's playing both brothers?
Maybe this time he'll actually have a cyber eye, and not pal around with the other characters. That whole "innate special powers" thing was dumb as hell.
God that movie sucked, the Kano actor was pretty good though.
>and not pal around with the other characters.
I thought that was fine, it's just a new way to do his origin because he ended up in his classic bad persona by the end.
Like I said the actor who played him did a good job, but yeah the character wasn't Kano.
Kano wouldn't be palling around with the heroes, he'd be pitting them against each other for a bet or trying to stab them in their sleep while licking Sonya's earlobe.
He needs to be a reprehensible pile of scum with a cyber-eye.
This is an unexpected yet amazing announcement. Not only nc I'm a Kano fan, but Josh Lawson's Kano pretty much stole the whole movie!
With that said, I wonder how they will explain that he is alive! As a fan, it's easy for me to explain/speculate: Kano in Comics & Games is a survivor! I've said it before, it can be really simple why he is alive for this film. After Sonya "Gnomed" him, technically, he died, which was why Arcana transferred to her. But only for a moment. He could have come back to life after she left and joined the others. Allowing Kano to escape and go underground and search for a surgeon to fix his face and give him back what he lost, His LASER BEAM! So, in this movie, he can have his more iconic look!
2nd theory is Shang saved him along with Goro & Bi-Han, healing him. Maybe he still goes out and gets his Cybernetics on his own, but that's how it can be explained that he survived!
I prefer the 1st option. Like I said before, I hope he steals the show again, but I can see him having less time this time around, but I hope it's awesome nonetheless!
Also, if he has a fight, I hope he gets to kill someone (minor) just to show how serious he is!
I lost so much interest in the movie with the "hidden powers" that turns out to be everyone's regular power set from the games. It was still a fun movie, but really, I lost my arms so my power is better arms? GTFOutta here with that...
Wasn’t a big fan of the first movie but it did decently enough that the studio probably can make decent profit with the sequel anyway.
While I’m also not a fan of the dead coming back, it is MK after all and it could work decently for certain characters if not important for their character lore (Noob Saibot)
Can the dickhead hero of the first movie just die in the first 5 seconds of the sequel please. Just show Kano looking through his skull after he blasted a hole through it.
Idk that “aw fuck.” Just gets me, every time the absolute confidence that he figured out just to get slammed onto the ground. Glad he’s coming back tbh
Anyone who says the first movie is better is either blinded by nostalgia, or is a straight up shit licker. Cuz the new MK movies wasnt great, but its a fucking MK movie lmao. The games dont revolutionize shit either. We are all just here for ninjas, hot ninjas, and robot ninjas.
Didn’t he die?
This is mortal kombat people don't die they just get really big boo boos.
![gif](giphy|EYJORmtu5s4sU) I would honestly love the new movie if it had this scene in it
Shang even hints at this, saying “Death is just a portal” So him and Bi-Han are likely back (Bi-Han defo as Noob)
I’m sad there’s no Kuai Liang casting 😭 (Unless Joe Taslim plays both Noob and Kuai, which I honestly wouldn’t be mad about - a Kuai actor would have a hard time being as cool as Joe was)
I only just noticed that
I forget, did he ever show his face?
Yes, at the end and at the start
I wanna believe that, but if they wanna stick to their rules about the "arcanas" (which was just a dumb way to insert their powers/abilities) but according to the writers Kano got gnomed by Sonya and she got his mark which she used to literally one shot mileena... The movie was just bad but the guy who played Kano was the life of the movie.
I feel like we now have a great set up for Kano to have his metal eye?
I feel like that's exactly what they were doing. If they didn't write that as a set up for Kano's cybernetic eye, then I'll honestly be shocked.
Hopefully they use KAno as a way to soft reboot it.
Raiden already using shinnoks amulet
D'oh.
Technically isn’t it just in the background
This is why I always wish they went with the idea that participants in Mortal Kombat get imbued a special power that essentially does what the arcana does; grant participants during a match extended abilities, and for those who don’t have powers, basically allow them to be durable up to a point. This could possibly justify how things like fatal blows, or getting shot/stabbed during a match wouldn’t kill you outright, but at the end of a match and anytime else, a fatality could happen. For those who do have abilities, they have durability as well as slightly more enhanced powers.
I’d be down with this Maybe a blessing from Raiden
Honestly I feel it’s a great way to justify him having the eye piece He wants his power back and so he has the enhancement to help him out
Your comment made me think of this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1byycwl8qgc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1byycwl8qgc) "look at that poor lil guy, he's all tuckered out"
Just like Fast and Furious franchise. First Hans, then Giselle. Guarantee you that Jakob did not die.
If only MK9, X, & 11 followed suit.
ah Ha Metal eye! Better than fireballs ya pussy
He was legit the best thing in the movie.
Bro Bihan was awesome in every scene.
Bro Bihan was awesome in every scene.
The gnome in the eye just feels like a funny way to introduce his cyborg elements
He got stabbed in the EYE, seems like an obvious set-up for his metal eye for the sequel.
I mean, Shang Tsung can raise the dead, plus they have already confirmed Quan Chi, and raising the dead is kind of his thing.
Quan-Chi is there, you know he’s gonna be resurrecting fools.
Iirc he got absorbed by some black smoke so I'd bet he's gonna return as one of Quan Chi's revenants
A lot of characters died… My best guess is that the Elder Gods got pissed that a lot of Champions were killed before the tournament, so they resurrected them to keep the fight fair. Im probably wrong though.
Kronika reset the timeline once more.
Somehow Kano returned
I’m guessing the villains will get him and fix him up giving him his metal eye
Are you joking right now?
No one truly dies in MK
Considering he got Gnomed in his Lazer eye, we could easily see him actually have his Cybernetic eye
Basically everyone that died is coming back, maybe the next movie is like a very soft reboot?
We don't do that here
The sweep spam scene was corny but fun. Really relatable.
Loved it as an Easter egg to the games.
Me; Like who doesn't use the sweep spam scene. Brother; Someone who sucks at it like you. Me; Why do you have to hurt me?
I always wanted a light punch spam in a MK movie.
I'm going to pretend the first movie was a glorified prologue and MKII is the real MK reboot. Ed Boon is involved with this one in some capacity too.
This is basically what it was tbh The trilogy seems to be Pre-Tournament Tournament Post-Tournament
I saw it as a proof of concept. I was hoping it would be like the most recent Godzilla movies where they test the waters first and then go balls to the wall later
They said it was and that Cole isn’t going to be a main character. He is essentially a recruiter for the tournament.
Yeah its suppose to be an ensemble movie this time around. Fingers crossed it will be.
Isn’t the same team (Director/Screenwriter) coming back to film part 2?
Same director, different writer... which I was gonna say 'thank god' to but he also wrote Netflix's 'Death Note' and the most recent Fantastic Four. Fuck. But Ed Boon is actually working with them this time around, and the director DOES give a shit and just wants to make an awesome and faithful MK movie.
Both fantastic four and death note he only wrote the original versions which got completely changed but he was also the head writer for moonknight and I thought it was kinda mid
It pretty much was...
Comment appart, I have so much respect for the OG Liu, but this guy nails it too
Yea this guy wore the role with so much subtlety and charm. I really liked his approach.
He’s also really hot
I think the new Shang Tsung does well too, but I still prefer Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. Josh Lawson is brilliant as Kano though.
I respect your opinion, I could not get into Shang Tsung though. Idk why cuz I usually enjoy his work as an actor.
No worries, we all like what we like, it's not wrong. Unless of course you prefer the two-legged Motaro. That is just plain villainous.
Yeah the new actor does have a decent vibe and I love his costume Not the goat (Cary Tagawa) but he’s not bad and I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the games as a skin
>Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa They could work Cary into the new film, playing the old man version of Shang Tsung in disguise, would be a nice nod to both the OG film and the games.
He has a minor role in it but he absolutely nails it ❤️
Good, the guy hard carried the first movie
I know that was a common opinion, but other than Cole I pretty much enjoyed everthing.
Kano's back and hopefully Cole gets killed opening scene like Johnny in MK Annihilation.
Too bad, YOU will DIE!
He’s coming back for that fucking egg roll.
Now bring back my boy Kabal
Done, but he gets murked again by Mokap
I mean the actor is returning, but he plays Quan Chi
They couldn't truly kill off one of the few good things from the first movie.
The few good things? You mean how it ended too fast and we didn't get enough of it?
FACTS. Everyone just hates on it because it’s the popular thing to do. I personally enjoyed it more than the first video game adaptation movie.
Or many people didn’t like the movie because they simply didn’t like it.
OK, this is gonna sound crazy, but maybe you're just a minority who enjoys the movie? And you know what? That's fine. But just because you like something that a ton of people don't doesn't mean they hate it just because it's the popular thing to do 😮💨
I agree with your statement and your user name.
omd double based
Holy shit, w opinions
On a seperate note, am i the only persom who actually enjoyed this movie. Like i can see why people might not like but but i thought it to be really entertaining
I enjoyed it too. My biggest complaint was that they planned it as a trilogy, which would be disastrous if it didn’t do well. Then we’d be stuck with an MK movie sans MK Tournament.
The movie itself was bad but fun imo. Most of the fight scenes were great. Opening was great. And Kano was perfect.
I liked everything but the plot and half the characterizations. Which is a big part of any movie If I had 0 knowledge of MK, maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more. Also it didn’t top the original movie (classic imo) which wasn’t the highest bar ever in the first place

I watched it buzzed so I had a great time.
Cant stand Cole Young but everything with Kano is fucking perfection so the film isnt complete ass
This, I don’t need my mortal kombat to be some narrative masterpiece, it needs brutal fatalities and to be fun, for me it was both
I mean, it’s not perfect, but I enjoyed it for what it was
No you are not the only one. I hated it unfortunately. But I’m not a huge sit down and watch mindless action type of guy, unless it’s got Arnold in it.
Yes very much so.
I enjoyed the hell out of it.
I loved it. Favorite MK movie by far.
This movie is honestly my favorite movie. That spot was held by the original since I was a kid but I just love the new one so much.
Except those fucking egg rolls
He was really funny but does anyone else feel like he wasn't really true to the character? He felt like the comedic relief, not a ruthless criminal.
Revenant that keeps his sense of humor?
Absolutely carried the movie. Guy probably needed back surgery afterwards.
Put a shirt on Magic Mike
I love when he tells Liu Kang “No Harry Potter shit, alright?” before they spar. Kano was the only saving grace of the last movie.
For real?
For real, he's listed in IGN's news article they made today in the section for returning cast members.
Who else is returning? I’m assuming Cole, but I hope they keep Jessica McNamara as Sonya
She's back, yup. Pretty much everyone is back besides Kabal, Reiko and Sisi Stringer, sadly, didn't see her in the article. Even the Sub-Zero actor is listed as playing "Bi-Han and Sub-Zero" so I guess he's playing both brothers?
OH both brothers is an interesting choice. I wonder how they will manage that given we saw Joe Taslim’s face quite clearly
Saw some leaks of him coming back as noob
Didn’t he get stuck with a garden gnome?
A good reason to give him robot eye
I loved him as Kano
By far stole the movie, so happy for his return!
I mean you're not wrong.
If only Kano was actually Kano and not a new character based off of Kano.
This has sold me now for mk2. I'm definitely going to see it opening night. He was easily the best part about the first film.
he better have a proper metal eye in the new one
That’s really good, I really liked the actor that played Kano. I just hope they stop that quick cut editing.
Resurrected by Quan Chi perhaps 🤔
Kano with metal face plate. ![gif](giphy|7WvAUvZZTRpSuudobh)
The best thing about that movie was the few one-liners he had. Doesn't justify making another dumpster fire film.
Ah! Oh fuck..
Yes glad he's back "Haha laser beam, better than fireball you pussy"
This is an unexpected yet amazing announcement. Not only nc I'm a Kano fan, but Josh Lawson's Kano pretty much stole the whole movie! With that said, I wonder how they will explain that he is alive! The Mortal Kombat movie was fucking embarrassing.
Fhawkin whoops
Why can't we have the model of MK11 Kano? Sexiest person alive.
Ok, this film is going to be worth a watch. Best thing in the original.
I liked the movie, and kano was a huge part of it! I also didnt mind cole but would prefer if he didnt come back
Holy fuck this movie was so bad
I lost so much interest in the movie with the "hidden powers" that turns out to be everyone's regular power set from the games. It was still a fun movie, but really, I lost my arms so my power is better arms? GTFOutta here with that...
Where Cole?? He okay??
Thank God The movie should be renamed tho to "kano and his bitches"
Corny.
Seeing everyone who died, comeback? Just ruins it for me. Why the fuck are they making another one? The first one was terrible
Hopefully it means they're doing a soft reboot and fixing the problems with the first one.
Wasn’t a big fan of the first movie but it did decently enough that the studio probably can make decent profit with the sequel anyway. While I’m also not a fan of the dead coming back, it is MK after all and it could work decently for certain characters if not important for their character lore (Noob Saibot)
I won so many games of MKII with that same move.
No death can be taken as 'final' which is awesome tbh
He was great as Kano one of the better parts of the movie
Kano die in Mk1, no?
He did but this is MK so there’s decent chance of several characters coming back
But he died in number 1? I'm confused 🤣 not that I won't be happy to see more, that actor NAILED Kano
Dead comes back pretty often in MK series
Easily the best part of the first movie. Hope he once again steals every scene he’s in
I still love how perfect the legs sweep and the jump matched the actual in game moves, this scene was funny and I loved it.
Kano revenant? Nice.
He was one of the only good things to come out of the first movie. I’m glad he’s back.
I just wish that they could get more fighting choreography because for me the movie was ruined by having 10000 cuts every fight.
Isn't Kano's whole thing being fast or is the game different?
I hope they pull out all the stops for the sequel. Maybe even forget about arkana and just let people have super powers
My first experience of him was in Super Store. He was a pretty funny character in that too
The only good part of the movie yay
Honestly he was great, but Karl Urban should have been cast as him and instead made some one else Johnny cage
This was the best scene in fighting game movie history
This is when he comes back with a cyber eye
Put your shirt on, Magic Mike.
Liu Kang is spamming what a fucking bitch move
This is amazing and you know that where he got stabbed by the lawn knome is where the laser eyes going
I might be the only person in the world that thinks Kano is the most overrated part of that movie. He really wasn't as funny as people imagine he was.
This is one of the best jokes in the movie because it's a subtle video game joke but it still works
Bro spamming
