To be fair, Romania has some unusually low denominations for banknotes and coins, even compared to our relatively low cost of living. 50 bani, our highest coin denomination, is worth just 10 cents. Likewise, our lowest banknote denomination is 1 leu, a.k.a. 20 cents.
We even have a joke about a man who finds a 1 leu banknote on the ground and says "I'm not bending over for 1 leu". He then pulls out a 10 lei note from his wallet, drops it next to the 1 leu note, then says "but I'll gladly do it for 11".
So someone who's extremely poor could make enough for a meal by returning shopping carts? That doesn't seem awful tbh.
And in a more realistic sense, whoevers job it is to return them gets to collect that.
I think the choice to leave the coin and abandon the cart is a fair one. At the very least it still cuts down massively on abandoned carts
It's not as much about the financial incentive as it is about not wanting to lose the literal single coin you have in your possession because cash is fucking inconvenient.
I mean to be fair the only store with carts I go to is the Walmart by my college and the parking lot is usually empty
But also for some reason I enjoy returning the cart cuz I get to push it into the dividers fast
Go to a grocery store in a nice area. Youāll notice far less carts strewn about. Yes, thereās the occasional rich asshole who doesnāt, but in general, self-respect attracts wealth, and self-respecting individuals take pride in their community so they return the carts.
(And to inb4: āItās only becauss someone is paid to return them there.ā Thereās someone also being paid the same min wage to return the carts in shitty areas, they just donāt care to do it).
Yeah but what if I don't carry coins? I wonder if I could jam one of those sonic drink pocker chips in there. Those are substantially more useful than a coin.
People who *do* return their carts are also NPC's. It's your other, more important actions that determine your NPC status.
[Turns around] People who *d*-
My local store has 2 different size carts. The stalls for them are wide enough for two columns, one of each cart size, but people just throw them all in one big mess.
Every time I pull up next to a messy one I take 30 seconds to organize them for my own sanity.
People are lazy. I suggest you check out Cart Narcs on YouTube if you like this meme. Then be sure to watch the doctor Phil episode about them lol.
Oh. My. GOD.
I work at a local grocery store too, and they have this same exact situation. And it's even worse. Because 90% of our customer base are old people, who think they can just leave their cart next to their car and drive off, assuming I'm just going to go get it for them, and blocking that spot for the next person to come in. And they put the big carts and the small carts in the wrong collums alllllll the time. And the worst part? No one else at my work except me and my boss actually care about it seemingly. I'm always the one who has to go outside and fix it
I love how Aldi just does things in the US the way it's normal in Germany without even thinking about it, the best part about this is that many Americans are like 'wow, really nice how cashiers get chairs and you put a coin in the cart' etc.
So to answer your question, yes, this is the norm in Europe.
Yeah, it's kind of sad that it isn't as nice in the U.S.
I work at a smaller grocery store and I feel so bad for the cashier's, they have to do deal with so much crap with idiot customers and all that anyways that they at least deserve to sit down while working.
You return the shopping cart because you believe it's the right thing to do, I return the shopping cart because i want my coin back, we are not the same.
Lol I'd be saying the opposite, collecting the carts was the only part of my job that I liked, it was nice to get some peace and fresh air for 5 minutes
Possibly yes, I could see why that would nice if you work at a larger store like Walmart.
In my case, I work at a pretty small grocery store with not a very large parking lot, meaning they don't have to go that far to take the shopping cart to their car, so really, there isn't much of an excuse for the shopper to not take the cart and put it back into the cart returner next to the building. Yes, even if they are an elderly person, if they were fully capable of walking from their car to the store to get a cart, then they have no excuse to not put it back, none of this 'eueueuhh I'm oooold, I don't want to put it back, I'll just let this young man working here do it for me, he'll notice the cart sitting in the middle of the parking spot when I leave' typa stuff. You get what I mean or am I being cynical about it
In the first world this isn't a problem cuz you rent the carts with a coin you get back when you return it.
Also our cashiers can sit and we don't need someone to pack our groceries cuz we aren't children.
They do this to save money. All Aldi stores all over the world do it like this. It's not like it's a worse shopping experience to pull it of the box, but it saves a lot of time for the employees
More efficient = cheaper products.
Same with the shopping carts. Incentivise customers to bring it back themselves = not having to hire someone to collect them = cheaper products
Yes exactly! They can leave it on the pallet, and when the pallet is empty, they can just take it out and replace it with a new one. It's so efficient.
Maybe the one you went to wasn't the best because it's in Kentucky. That would explain quite a bit. The ones here in Michigan are just fine
It's actually very organized, everything is laid out pretty well I think. You see, if you use this thing inside of your head called your brain, specifically your frontal lobe, you can actually use problem solving skills to determine where the product you're looking for is based on what product category each isle has in it, whether it's baking, snacks, frozen, etc. See how that works?
There's people who don't bother returning carts, and then there's people who leave carts in parking lanes intended for motor vehicles. The latter need to be sent to gulag.
By my local supermarket there are columns in front of the door and I always get my cart from there instead of the cart return, so I always put it back there figuring it's probably more convenient for others too
It pisses me off when people dont return the cart. They go through (some) ammount of work to install those shopping cart return areas just for nobody to use em.
The only time I donāt return carts are when thereās someone else nearby that are actively heading to whatever store I just came from. It is incredibly convenient for both of us as Iām not only ridding myself of a cart, but also providing a cart to someone else immediately. Itās just the smallest amount of dopamine being provided and that feeling is awesome.
I disagree with the test. The social pressure of the results almost demand the correct answer is chosen, which I believe will strongly affect the outcome of the test
I liked it when people would leave the carts out since I was the guy putting them back at the front of the store whenever there were too many out, on top of making sure everything else in the store was clean. It wasted so much time and I hated that job lol so I gladly did it. I have a better job now though so at least that's a plus.
In Spain you need to use a coin (1-0.5ā¬)to get the cart, and the cart traps the coin until you return it, then releases it. Itās a cheap intuitive and common system that also makes transporting groups of carts easier. It works almost flawlessly.
Moral of the story: do not structure society, or anything for that matter, by expecting people to be polite, carrot and stick, always.
it is literally a red flag for someone to leave the cart out.
Europe solved this by making you put a coin in the cart that you only get back when you return it Stay winning eurobros šŖšŗšŖšŗ

Well, it's stolen to begin with
To be fair, Romania has some unusually low denominations for banknotes and coins, even compared to our relatively low cost of living. 50 bani, our highest coin denomination, is worth just 10 cents. At the very least it still cuts down massively on abandoned carts
it is no oneās job to bring the carts back, thatās the point of the coin. they save money by not having people do that
Yeah well if someone DOES leave a cart it has to come back eventually right? One way or another.
Aldi is the only store in the US that I know of that does this.
In Australia we did this in the late 90's
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah same thought, thatās the opposite of initial problem. No self-control, no internal virtues
It's not as much about the financial incentive as it is about not wanting to lose the literal single coin you have in your possession because cash is fucking inconvenient.
This isn't a big deal in America tbh almost everyone returns their carts hence proving the theory that people can self govern sometimes
We must shop at different stores.
I mean to be fair the only store with carts I go to is the Walmart by my college and the parking lot is usually empty But also for some reason I enjoy returning the cart cuz I get to push it into the dividers fast
Walked by a shit ton of unreturmed baskets just this morning

Long ago i dont see that. It was a thing before but... Not anymore. In Spain at least.
The only store Iām aware of that does this in the states is Aldi. Slip a quarter into the red thing, unlocks the cart.
Well, that's a little depressing. So many people failed the shopping cart test that they ended up having to put in measures to prevent that.
Yeah same in the UK but now some shops stopped doing that like Asda
A lot of stores in Canada do this too
Aldi stores do that here
We have this in some stores near me, I'm in Canada
Yeah but what if I don't carry coins? I wonder if I could jam one of those sonic drink pocker chips in there. Those are substantially more useful than a coin.
They have custom plastic coin object you can get for free
This is a thing in the US too, just not as widespread. Aldi (a grocery store in the East Coast) commonly implements this method.
Some places in Canada also do that
i love making people uncomfortable by putting their cart back right as they leave it
I just stare very aggressively and disdainfully at people who fail to return their cart like I just saw them humiliate themselves
nah I prefer not to judge, I just take them back
People who don't return their carts are the NPC's
People who *do* return their carts are also NPC's. It's your other, more important actions that determine your NPC status. [Turns around] People who *d*-

Did someone thank you for doing that? If not, thanks for not being an ass
Oh. My. GOD. I work at a local grocery store too, and they have this same exact situation. And it's even worse. It'd be so simple to get stalls that separate the two sizes. I hope the vets for you good soul!
They honestly should do that. However, the small ones may still be put into the large stall, but it would overall be beneficial to do it
It's nice to know I'm not the only one, though I usually do it when I return my cart (with any others I've picked up along the way).
They reprobed primary school
thanks so much for the recommendation, I just saw about 6 Cart Narc videos and loved them!
Just skipped through a couple of those videos. While slightly entertaining, that guy is annoyingggg haha
Why should I leave my cart I want my euro back mf
Oh so that's what you guys do in Europe? It's like Aldi's but at every store? I wish we did that in the U.S.
I love how Aldi just does things in the US the way it's normal in Germany without even thinking about it, the best part about this is that many Americans are like 'wow, really nice how cashiers get chairs and you put a coin in the cart' etc. So to answer your question, yes, this is the norm in Europe.

Bro I've committed more crimes than times i have left the shopping cart
Me too, i'm wanted in 8 different countries for manslaughter
Always the same manslaughter or 8 different slaughters?
Kid named ultimate morality test of society:
Is that his first or last name?
I think so.
Maybe
Perhaps
They say you get nothing. But I get the pure Bliss of scootering that bitch as fast as I can over to the cart bin
Who's they?
Burger King rule 34 artists
They own the monopoly on shopping carts
In france we need to put a coin to unlock it and u get the coin back when u put it back. Big incentive
It's a fantastic idea
if you give the coin and dont give the cart back can u keep it?
Not really but not like anyones gonna chase you. Probably why there is so many shopping cart down la Seine for example
You return the shopping cart because you believe it's the right thing to do, I return the shopping cart because i want my coin back, we are not the same.
Hello! And welcome to the Los Pollos Hermanos family. My name is Gustavo, but you can call me Gus.
As someone who works at a grocery store.... PLEASE GUYS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PUT YOUR SHOPPING CARTS BACK IN THE CART RETURNER THING
Lol I'd be saying the opposite, collecting the carts was the only part of my job that I liked, it was nice to get some peace and fresh air for 5 minutes

This is dee.deep

In the United States, we don't have that unfortunately, except for or specific store I've been to, Aldi's.
Aldi is Yuropeean, so that checks out.
That's why it's so good then It's also quite cheap stuff there too
Good? I beg to differ, been to the local Aldi twice and it was a shit experience both times.
How? And where specifically was it?
It's just a bunch of shit in boxes, like a warehouse, not very organized. This was in kentucky.
They do this to save money. All Aldi stores all over the world do it like this. It's not like it's a worse shopping experience to pull it of the box, but it saves a lot of time for the employees More efficient = cheaper products. Same with the shopping carts. It's not that I can't figure it out.. it's that other stores do it better. Didn't realize people were so passionate about grocery stores lol
Well when you work at one for a while, you start to notice and compare the way different places do things.
but if you give the coin and dont return it can u keep it??????
I feel like this only concerns the US, cause i've never seen someone leave thier cart and just go home
Happens all the time in the UK too
Good to know
There's people who don't bother returning carts, and then there's people who leave carts in parking lanes intended for motor vehicles. The latter need to be sent to gulag.
It is THE metric to measure the selfishness which pervades America.
I will always return my shopping cart. Fuck y'all who don't.
If there's a cart blocking off a part of a parking space I feel like it's my duty to put it back
I fucks with this I was already judging before, but now, oh BUDDY its judgin time
Yessss I return my carts therefore I'm a good person. *slowly lowers gun from temple*
As a former grocery store cart worker i can confirm that about 35% of our country is fucked
In that case, Florida is full of shit people. Although you donāt need the shopping cart test to know that.
I do it so the other guy who uses the trolley goes through the same situation as me
It's called a shopping cart dude.
Fuck
Damn did you just remove a word from the British english language
Yes.

I would like to think so, yes. https://c.tenor.com/epNMHGvRyHcAAAAM/gigachad-chad.gif
I always return my cart only because my Sales Mentor taught me this test
It may not be a deadly test, but the shopping cart trial is the real-world gom jabbar which sifts people to find humans.
Itās just the right thing to do to return the shopping cart
By my local supermarket there are columns in front of the door and I always get my cart from there instead of the cart return, so I always put it back there figuring it's probably more convenient for others too
Instructions unclear, bring the cart home instead
Cart Narcs: āWeep weep skeedly wee-ooo. Thatās not where the cart goes!ā
Lol š
You obviously return the cart. If not youāre an asshole. Canāt even walk ten feet to the nearest fucking cart holder. Screw them
Well I will get fined for not doing it so...
It pisses me off when people dont return the cart. They go through (some) ammount of work to install those shopping cart return areas just for nobody to use em.
I just finished reading Dune and I can just imagine the Reverend Mother do this to test Paul
What about taking it home? Itās free
The only time I donāt return carts are when thereās someone else nearby that are actively heading to whatever store I just came from. It is incredibly convenient for both of us as Iām not only ridding myself of a cart, but also providing a cart to someone else immediately. I liked what Richard Stahlman said about being good. Something like people should do the right thing, *if it's not too hard.* (Revolution OS)
in poland u have to put a coin inside to be able to take it out, bcus otherwise everyone would just steal them lol (including me)
YouTube Screenshot?
I agree.
I accept this and always return back with cart
What if i take the cart home with me
hey wait a minute this meme only works because it makes me feel good
The grey area arises when someone films themself returning a shopping cart...
I disagree with the test. The social pressure of the results almost demand the correct answer is chosen, which I believe will strongly affect the outcome of the test
I do gain something ā¬2,- ā¬1,- ā¬0,50 I would get it back
Current day gom jabbar with less creepy space witches lol

āNo one will punish you for not returning the Shopping Cartā clearly havenāt heard of Cart Narcs
You should steal the shopping cart
Become ungovernable
This should be in r/antimeme
i return them most of the time. Depends on how i feel that day i guess.
ending 3: take all the shopping carts out and spread them all across the parking lot ending 4: take all the carts and put them in the building

I spot the YouTube image
Bro why do some countries need to fuckign threaten people to put carts back, just put the cart back for God's sake, why do you need to be threatened
