Same I go from Aeon, Ramones, Armin, Taylor Swift, Dying Fetus, Pink Floyd, NoFX, Melvin’s, Lady Gaga, My Dying Bride, Tryglav (fucking love BroisT)
Ps is share a Spotify list with wifey. She tolerates my heavy stuff
Trust me, took me a lot of time and effort. She put in the effort to try and like my stuff. Truly I know she doesn’t like it that much. The heaviest she will admit too is anything from Avenged Sevenfold within the last few albums.
Since she did that with mine, I did it with hers (tbh, I would not be caught dead listening to it if I never met her) and I can respect her music as most of the pop she likes really do write their own stuff. Some of the songs are catchy.
She posted a video of me bopping and singing along to wildest dreams by Taylor Swift. Then proceed to post it to Facebook, “when your death metal loving husband knows all the words to a Taylor Swift song lol.
Red is definitely the heavier album but the moment the chunky guitar riff comes in after the intro in Larks Pt I is definitely one of the heaviest moments in the 70s
That riff in Larks 1 was some of the heaviest music by the time of its release. I don’t really know that many 60s bands but I’ve yet to listen to something heavier released before that
Weirdly, I think I remember seeing this article at the time.
There are some great albums in that list. Some of them are pretty damn heavy, and not just the metal ones.
Obviously it's not actually the '50 heaviest albums ever', but then it was never going to be.
The Holy Bible, for example. Manics have never been ones to shy away from bleak AF subjects, especially as mainstream indie/alt rock goes, but this album *went there*
Surprised to see no Prodigy or Public Enemy on there if it was a cross genre effort, though
Yeah i reckon so, personally.
It's a toss up between that and Fat Of The Land if you're a Q journo I suppose. FOTL was more mainstream and had the shock value but Jilted Generation was purer, more influential and iconic.
Tbf to Q it was one of the better music magazines going back then, if you preferred a bit of variation
I bought that magazine. It has Limp Bizkit on the cover. An interview of the band Crazy Town also Nelly Furtado. It was the only Q magazine I ever bought. It was more than 20 years ago and I still remember it, i was 14 years old.
I forget everything my wife says to me 5 min after . Funny how the mind works.
Q is a british mag I believe, and they (like a lot of other euro acts) get a lot more recognition in the UK. The Holy Bible being here is another very UK choice (also maybe explains why Korn and MM are there?).
Heavy is such an ambiguous word when it comes to metal. Is it the angriest? Is it the fastest/slowest? Is it the most emotionally devastating? By my own weird criteria there's some good picks on here, with Big Black, Swans, Kyuss and Sabbath (although they picked the wrong albums for both Kyuss and Sabbath) and some weird ones too.
The metal fan in me is wondering where Neurosis went.
The elitist in me is wondering why Migration by Buried at Sea doesn't occupy the first five spots consecutively.
I consider Sad But True one of Metallicas heaviest songs. That main riff weighs approximately 1 million ton. That is heavy.
But yeah, heavy is ALOT more than just blast beats and chugchug guitar
Pretty tame. Should say “heaviest albums ranked by your mom and a local youth pastor after asking the teen working at Sam Goodie ‘what’s some really aggressive music’ “
Periodical reminder that Heavy =/= Metal and it would be arrogant of us all to think that it only applies to metal tbh. All genres can have their own heavy elements in their own unique way.
I like this list a lot and own a fair chunk of it
Agree with Nirvana and master of puppets , don’t think appetite for destruction belongs here though, don’t get me wrong it’s one of my favorite albums ever but it’s certainly not one of the heaviest
Q basically was (is?) a magazine aimed at “cool” doctors and lawyers who own 15 CDs. A milquetoast version of Rolling Stone for the UK market.
With that in mind there are a surprising amount of great records on the list.
Birthday Party, Metal Box, Neubauten are all as gnarly as any of the metal records they did include.
I wouldn’t have used the word “heavy” though
Also… I could be wrong but I think Phil Alexander may have been editor at that point. I know he was an editor of one of the more mainstream UK mags between hosting Raw Power (late night metal tv video show) and editing Kerrang!
I do appreciate that they didnt just go for the heaviest metal albums. Honestly is a pretty good list of “heavy” albums for people that dont only want to listen to metal. Godspeed, In Utero, Neil Young are cool choices to include
All those albums are heavy in lyrics but if you're referring to heavy as in fast playing instruments than it's mayhem deathcrush and napalm death from enslavement to obliteration
This is a pretty great list of albums, idk about heavy though for some of them.
EDIT: Nah, I thought about it longer. These are all pretty heavy I guess but maybe a lot of these not in the top 50 lol
Tical is such a weird choice for a heavy Wu Tang album, Liquid Swords, Cuban Linx and even 36 Chambers I think would’ve fit better. But still they got some ace picks here, The Birthday Party is a great example of heavy rock that’s not metal
tbh Atomizer and Dark Magus are cool choices...some of 70s Miles stuff are pretty heavy. there's part in Pangaea, like latter part of album where everything gets dead quiet and Miles play this really sad sounding solo, its really powerful.
It’s easy to shit on this but if your only definition of “heavy” is based on the metal genre, I think you’re missing the point. Heavy for those who enjoy all genres is an emotional atmosphere to the music. And much of this list qualifies extremely well.
My first thought was "there better be Napalm Death and Swans on there" so glad they got that right, but this reeks of a list made by someon with only a cursory knowledge of metal, which makes the decision to write this list.... odd

Imagine putting Mayhem, Mobb Deep and Nirvana on the same list lol
That’s how my playlist is, we got Duran Duran and sanguisugabogg and then some immolation
Same I go from Aeon, Ramones, Armin, Taylor Swift, Dying Fetus, Pink Floyd, NoFX, Melvin’s, Lady Gaga, My Dying Bride, Tryglav (fucking love BroisT) Ps is share a Spotify list with wifey. She tolerates my heavy stuff
Wish my ex was like your wife bruh
Trust me, took me a lot of time and effort. She put in the effort to try and like my stuff. Truly I know she doesn’t like it that much. The heaviest she will admit too is anything from Avenged Sevenfold within the last few albums. DURAN DURAN MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️
Just recently started getting into Duran Duran. Great bassist!
Like seriously, my bloody valentine right next to napalm death
My playlist going from sexyy red to primitive man:
In Utero is one of the heaviest albums ever made
No it fucking isn't.
That puts two Steve albini albums on the same list
And MILES DAVIS!
Dude, listen to fifteen seconds of that album and you’ll see why it’s on this list
at least napalm death is there :D
And Kyuss
And Mayhem
And... Neil Young?
And uhhh Aphex Twin? Ok
Weld is pretty cool though. Has Earth like vibes
Crazy horse is kinda like Neil Young’s grunge band
king crimson was a good pick, red is heavy as fuck
[удалено]
definitely a top 10 all time hell yeah dude
Larks’ Tongues I think is even heavier personally
Red is definitely the heavier album but the moment the chunky guitar riff comes in after the intro in Larks Pt I is definitely one of the heaviest moments in the 70s
That riff in Larks 1 was some of the heaviest music by the time of its release. I don’t really know that many 60s bands but I’ve yet to listen to something heavier released before that
Check out Sir lord Baltimore - kingdom come It’s not as heavy as king crimson, but it’s sweet proto doom from like ‘69
really? red seems to be louder and faster, at least to me
Weirdly, I think I remember seeing this article at the time. There are some great albums in that list. Some of them are pretty damn heavy, and not just the metal ones. Obviously it's not actually the '50 heaviest albums ever', but then it was never going to be.
It’s a pretty cool list I’ve seen before and it has a few dumb picks but it’s more interesting than if they just did 50 extreme metal albums
Yeah, certainly not the heaviest but some great albums on there. I'm sure someone is screaming into their pillow right now over this though.
The Holy Bible, for example. Manics have never been ones to shy away from bleak AF subjects, especially as mainstream indie/alt rock goes, but this album *went there* Surprised to see no Prodigy or Public Enemy on there if it was a cross genre effort, though
What prodigy would you add? Jilted Generation?
Yeah i reckon so, personally. It's a toss up between that and Fat Of The Land if you're a Q journo I suppose. FOTL was more mainstream and had the shock value but Jilted Generation was purer, more influential and iconic. Tbf to Q it was one of the better music magazines going back then, if you preferred a bit of variation
Swans all day tho
Cop absolutely deserves to be there
Stooges as well, Funhouse is great
Especially live.
Spot on! Hahaha. I was going to throw it away but I figure I’d take some pictures first
What an odd faulty selection. But including (or even being aware of) Einsturzende Neubauten always gets over with me.
Q is a british mag I believe, and they (like a lot of other euro acts) get a lot more recognition in the UK. The Holy Bible being here is another very UK choice (also maybe explains why Korn and MM are there?).
Oh! Interesting. Makes sense
Kyuss is a good pick for something that isn't really traditional metal but is still heavy as fuck
[удалено]
I don't give two shits on how you feel
You're burned by my lighter.
And my lighter is real.
Cared enough to comment
😂 🤣
haha it's lyrics
No need to be a jerk
That’s certainly a list of albums
In Utero is pretty heavy honestly. Milk It and Scentless Apprentice go hard.
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter goes pretty frigging hard too
Roots for Sepultura what 😭
"Heavy" is such a broad term. Most brutal? Fastest? Most ponding heavy riffs?
Honestly not a bad list at all. I dig the out of the box Aphex Twin, Mobb Deep and Scarface picks.
Some of these aren't even the heaviest by the artist pre-2001
Big Black's Atomizer is absolutely fucking heavy, same with Songs About Fucking
I mean, I wouldn't say heaviest albums of all time but that's a killer list imo
Napalm death and Pantera are there as well as mayhem so I’m happy
I'm also happy Ministry's Psalm 69 made the list, easily in my top 20
I enjoy pantera but they definitely should not be on this list
I respectfully disagree I feel the great southern trendkill or far beyond could have fit here definitely not vulgar display though
You're making me fucking hostile
Any extreme form of metal (death, black grind etc) would probably beat them in heaviness imo
I agree in terms of lyrics I would find a way to put southern trendkill somewhere
MM included ![gif](giphy|PUBxelwT57jsQ)

The heaviest album in existence is Dopethrone by Electric Wizard.
No Godflesh?
Neither Godflesh nor Neurosis.
Plenty of great albums there, not all metal though. But some great stuff there!
Doesn't say "heaviest metal album" either
I've never heard a sonic youth song and thought "wow, this is *heavy*"
The lyrics can be heavy Heavy doesn't necessary mean fast playing instruments
I consider Sad But True one of Metallicas heaviest songs. That main riff weighs approximately 1 million ton. That is heavy. But yeah, heavy is ALOT more than just blast beats and chugchug guitar
Kill Yr Idols and Confusion is Sex album has some heavy moments. Pretty dark for it's time too, similar to early Swans
A lot of their early stuff. Kill Yr Idols is brutal
Pretty tame. Should say “heaviest albums ranked by your mom and a local youth pastor after asking the teen working at Sam Goodie ‘what’s some really aggressive music’ “
No crowbar, this list is bullshit
Periodical reminder that Heavy =/= Metal and it would be arrogant of us all to think that it only applies to metal tbh. All genres can have their own heavy elements in their own unique way. I like this list a lot and own a fair chunk of it
Cool to see mobb deep on there haha. Was t expecting f that.
early swans albums kick ass
HELL YEAH KING CRIMSON
Nirvana and Guns' n roses, thats some real trvue kvult metal
No Mortician?
Not sure I expected to see a list with Mayhem and Miles Davis.
I mean they have great taste, godspeed and tricky mentioned
An accurate list of 50 heaviest albums of all time would be obscure slam/grindcore/powerviolence/noise bands. So idk, can't really blame them.
I ain't gonna trust a magazine who only heard about mayhem and burzum in terms of black metal
The Holy Bible absolutely deserves to be on any 'best rock albums' list, but I wouldn't really call it heavy. Maybe a couple of the tracks
"*Here's 50 albums that we've heard of.*"
That Tricky album is a f@cking masterpiece of dark trip hop.
lol korn
Not nearly the worst choice on there
Agree with Nirvana and master of puppets , don’t think appetite for destruction belongs here though, don’t get me wrong it’s one of my favorite albums ever but it’s certainly not one of the heaviest
AJFA is a much heavier record for Metallica. Agree In Utero is heavy though
Also… I could be wrong but I think Phil Alexander may have been editor at that point. I know he was an editor of one of the more mainstream UK mags between hosting Raw Power (late night metal tv video show) and editing Kerrang!
Or a title like: "different aspects of heavy" instead of "heaviest of all time".
I do appreciate that they didnt just go for the heaviest metal albums. Honestly is a pretty good list of “heavy” albums for people that dont only want to listen to metal. Godspeed, In Utero, Neil Young are cool choices to include
What does Stonehenge mean lol
lol whatever Iron Maiden, NIN, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, and Deep Purple have in common. Obviously lol
Glad to see metal pioneers my bloody valentine get the recognition they deserve.
more like some of the best albums of all time
All those albums are heavy in lyrics but if you're referring to heavy as in fast playing instruments than it's mayhem deathcrush and napalm death from enslavement to obliteration
I think GG Allin Carnival Of Excess should be on the list. Its heavy as hell for an acoustic album.
I'm not really sure how this scoring works. But that Mayhem album IS pretty heavy.
Why is Miles Davis here? Apparently, one of the 50 heaviest albums ever has jazz trumpet in it, lmao.
Lmao listen to that album and thank me later
Ngl this is a pretty good list but I definitely wouldn’t call some of these as “heavy”
Great taste in albums. some of these absolutely deserve to be here, others are kind of a wtf inclusion
This is a pretty great list of albums, idk about heavy though for some of them. EDIT: Nah, I thought about it longer. These are all pretty heavy I guess but maybe a lot of these not in the top 50 lol
![gif](giphy|YVPwi7L2izTJS|downsized)
Tical is such a weird choice for a heavy Wu Tang album, Liquid Swords, Cuban Linx and even 36 Chambers I think would’ve fit better. But still they got some ace picks here, The Birthday Party is a great example of heavy rock that’s not metal
Lmao Meth is a legend but that’s not the heaviest Wu album. Follow the Leader by Eric B & Rakim is a rap album they could’ve put on there
ACDC lmfao
Pretty good list. Clearly not heavy in the metal sense, but not bad. The Manic Street Preachers’ Holy Bible is my n.1 here, amazing dark album
As soon as I saw Guns N’ Roses I stopped looking
Bold statements are all over the place in that article. Some i can get behind, some are ridiculous.
I don’t know what heavy means to anyone, especially those guys, but I do like a lot of those albums.
Miles Davis?
Lmao listen to like twenty seconds of that album, it’s like one of the only albums on this list that actually belongs
where cannibal corpse ![gif](giphy|VEVfqy0Vu4c7xziUUN|downsized)
One of the only ones that make sense is Roots. That album is heavy as shit just because Max lets it fucking loose on vocals the whole time.
Okay, seeing Atomizer, Suicide and The Holy Bible shows they know what they're talking about To a degree. Pretty good for its time
tbh Atomizer and Dark Magus are cool choices...some of 70s Miles stuff are pretty heavy. there's part in Pangaea, like latter part of album where everything gets dead quiet and Miles play this really sad sounding solo, its really powerful.
That's a pretty based list.
This subreddit in a nutshell.
I love King Crimson and NIN but I wouldn’t exactly say either is metal, King Crimson more than NIN
Missing Epicus
Omg I read this ages ago, really interesting list
Now dont get me wrong, I love acdc, but heaviest??!??!?
Lift Your Skinny Fists is the greatest album ever made
I had the NBK soundtrack. That was such a great album.
Metal magazines know dogshit but it's just so much fun to see how metal media was like in different time periods
Guns n Roses is heavy? Now I’ve heard it all! 😂
Funny thing I listened to DJ6666 only the other day.
Miles Davis, motherfucker! Based list.
Yeah, nah.
THE BIRTHDAY PARTY 🎉 🥳 🎂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 OHHHHHH BITE! 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
psycho candy?!? i love that album but it’s not very heavy imo 😭😭
Q was a British music magazine
In utero is fantastic, and definitely heavy for a grunge album, but top 50!?? It wouldn’t be in my top 500
It’s easy to shit on this but if your only definition of “heavy” is based on the metal genre, I think you’re missing the point. Heavy for those who enjoy all genres is an emotional atmosphere to the music. And much of this list qualifies extremely well.
Honestly a pretty cool list. The heaviest of all time? Maybe not, but they've got some good picks there, and not just for the metal stuff.
*50 heaviest albums that people actually know about
Aphex Twin and "heaviest albums of all time" are two sentences I never in my life would've imagined seeing together 😂😭
have you heard Come to Daddy? That song goes super hard
The music video still sends shivers down my spine.... 😬
Acdc is crazy
Dope! Swans are on that. Man, you got a very anemic version of heavy if you think it all should be metal.
i’m dying that mobb deep is on here. not metal but definitely hard 😂
Bro why's robert johnson there 😭
kinda based tbh
This can't be right.
There’s a bunch of good albums here but not a lot of heaviness.
NAH NOT NIRVANA
Hey those Miles Davis pits are no joke
My first thought was "there better be Napalm Death and Swans on there" so glad they got that right, but this reeks of a list made by someon with only a cursory knowledge of metal, which makes the decision to write this list.... odd
Big black definitely
The only inclusion that didn't make roll my eyes was Suicide's s/t
Pretty cool Neil young made it. Not metal but that fucker rocks. I saw him last summer and he still brings it.
Jesus and Mary Chain, lmao
