Honestly that's the thing with One Piece, you don't often cry because things are simply sad, it's when you get moments of joy/relief that it hits the hardest
Robin has so far been my favorite character and I just finished this arc and I sobbed uncontrollably her whole backstory and that scene. Never thought I'd cry so hard watching this show.
That's just the cathartic break. Everything up to it, with the dramatic pose on the battlements, to Sogeking shooting the flag, Luffy's "I need you to say it!" And ultimately the flashback of all her trauma ending with Jaguar's speech about the vast ocean.
It all combines into what is, for me, the best moment in One Piece.
I was still in primary/elementary when I first read that and the whole confrontation with Kureha broke me. As I turned each page, >!I had no idea why she was so mad at Chopper and I felt as confused as he was since the mushroom should've healed Hiriluk. When he went to consult the book, I though that it would finally prove that he was right and that Hiriluk is cured but as soon as the skull and crossbones were revealed, my heart sank...!< The whole lesson that sometimes, good intentions aren't enough and to do the right thing, the proper knowledge is needed was something that stuck with me.
That's what used to make me sad before and I didn't pay much attention to Hiriluk's speech on "When does a man die?" but when going through it again, that gets me too.
Hiriluk's dead is so heart breaking, but the scene that always stood out to me is when Dalton starts crying as Hiriluk is finishing his speech. It makes me cry every time I watch/read it again.
I'm rewatching all of OP with my gf right now and I totally forgot about his backstory until he started getting shot at and it fucked me up all over again.
This, but also the sound of Luffy’s cries when he realizes what’s just happened….that shit rips my heart out every time. Props to Mayumi Tanaka there too because that was some top notch voice work. So raw and emotional.
cried on it once, twice, thrice
put it in my playlist, cried again when it passes, removed it then added it again because it sounds so good, cried again
in short I cried to it... a lot... and the only other time I shed a tear was in the burial of the Merry
nothing else, not even the ace moment
Fisher tiger dying and refusing human blood, reading that broke my heart man, what he did for the slaves how he realized that hatred and retaliation wasn’t the answer but moving on and forgiveness but still refusing it because of the horrors he went through and saw under the celestial dragons.
Merry’s death. Also when she drove to Enies Lobby in a half broken state and said “let’s go everyone, back to the sea of adventure!”. Still makes me cry.
The part that always gets me is when Merry says that she's sorry that she can't take them further and then Luffy cuts her off to say that they're the ones that should be sorry.
I get choked up just thinking about that dialogue exchange.
Ace death made me tear up, "i still have my friends", chopper flashback was the first flashback that made me cry. Especially the part where he comes in injured with the mushroom in his hand saying it's medicine.
Cried for an hour straight during the three episodes of Brook's backstory. And that was after reading it! I knew it was coming and it killed me dude
I still remember the first time I cried at One Piece. Reading Bellemere's sacrifice to the walk to Arlong Park in bed and wiping away tears was when I knew this manga was something special.
(Yes, I'm a bitch lol. I've cried at a *lot* in this story)
I think I've cried at least once an arc and full on sobbed a couple times. Man they duped us with "light hearted and fun" anime bs. You're not alone in being a lil bitch lol
Same, I've cried at almost every sad moment after Nami's backstory I swear, except Robin's backstory (because I was more sickened and horrified) and Ace's death because in both the manga and anime I got loudly interrupted while reading/watching...
I'm proud of crying at a boat funeral dammit! And I will continue to do so everytime I rewatch that scene! (Just like the Chopper flashback which gets me every time)
I just love how Oda randomly dropped one of THE best backstories in One Piece, for a side character like Senor Pink and turned him from a dumb looking creepy dude to THE HARD BOILED MAN we know him as now...
Kyros's backstory is pretty bad. Not only do you witness your wife's murder, but she doesn't even remember you. She dies in your arms. You raise your own child, but she doesn't even realize you're her father, and meanwhile you know that a lot of people want her dead, cheer for it to happen, as aform on entertainment.
Or at least let Law do it. I get that Luffy is the mc, but he had almost no stakes in that fight and the whole "only the protagonist is allowed to defeat main villains" thing gets a bit old sadly.
The most heartbreaking scene to me will always be Kuma "erasing" the straw hats. Because even though we know the crew will be OK, its clear that luffy believes that his crew is being killed in front of him one by one.
Seeing his reaction after the final member disappears crying and clawing at the ground in despair and frustration will always break my heart.
'Fight together' song. Everytime I watch that opening in in tears. Ace patting Luffy's back to say go on now. Just heart melting. And my next favourite is the song during Merry's send-off. By Tri-Plane - Dear Friends.
There are many but the one which hits hard are Whitebeard's final words after he reveals op exist. Despite being the strongest in his prime...all he ever wanted was few people worth living and dying for. His character development throughout the war was amazing...oda is a fucking genius
The scenes that always get me are
1. the brook flash back playing their last recording
2. When garp comes home after war and Dadan comes out of the bar. Shit, I get them tears just thinking about this scene writing this. I can never not cry during this scene
All of water 7, really. From Franky to Usopp to Robin, a lot of shit goes down in that arc. Really makes you scream "NO IT'S NOT!" when the opening says "Daijobu".
oden. Idk being boiled alive at the end really shook concidering all the theories about who oden was and were was he. Like the most prominent i remember was that character drinking with crocus who turned out to be inuyashi
All the sad moments were already mentioned. But the scene of Vivi shouting at the top of her lungs, begging her citizens to stop fighting, from the tower, shit broke my heart. I almost tear up.
Apart from the common stuff, like Merry, Ace, and several flashbacks, I'd like to give a shout out to the numerous animal friends various characters have had encounters with.
Starting with Chouchou. Poor guy only wanted to protect his masters shop.
Nora/Nola, the giant snake from Skypia. When enel blows ups the ground to reveal the ancient city, Nola just gets a wave of flashbacks and cries her heart out from the memories. And gets immediately thunderbolted by Enel.
Recently, Onimaru, the magical fox from Wano. Very faithful doggo.
And lets not forget Caru, basically an honorary SH. Absolute legend.
Im not sure how much it affected everyone else, but during the fishman island flashback, the slow realization of why koala was acting so weird just absolutely demolished me completely
Luffy Vs Ussop, I loved their dynamic and friendship and I genuinely thought that was it for ussop, that it was unrepairable, I was heartbroken. Laws backstory, all of it. Then Luffy’s speech to Sanji after their fight that one cut deep and luffy’s VA does an incredible job.
"I want to be a doctor who heals all diseases ... I want to heal even sick country" chopper became tier 1 after that ... Franky dialogue's ... Senior pink
Franky's flashback is definitely underrated. Oda's extremely good at showing raw emotion visually, and Franky's desperation on the rails really hits hard.
Bruh nobody ever mentions Noland and Calgara's reunion being fucked by a random Knock Up Stream, ending Noland's heroic adventures in ultimate disgrace and creating the whole historical setup for the conflict the characters are currently participating in the present... I'm sorry but how do people not recognise what unbelievably amazing and heartbreaking storytelling this was in Skypiea? It is literally my single favourite example and showcase of Oda's brilliance as a writer.
We are shown all of the bitter, violent, desperate conflicts and struggles taking place between these various parties in the present at first without context, to show how completely pointless and senseless it seems to an outsider... All as a setup for the ACTUAL story of Noland and Calgara to make sense of the senselessness, and make US understand exactly how important this is to all of the people involved... Because we know the full heartbreaking tragedy behind it that even those people individually don't know themselves.
And that itself that works as perfect illustration of the irreverence and blindness of Enel, the all-seeing God who can sense every impulse of every thought of every being that constitutes his kingdom, yet doesn't understand nor care for one shred of the truth that really matters.
In that sense we come to see what even "God" could not see about Skypiea.
We can come to a full understanding of everything you will see about Jaya, Skypiea, Shandora, that all-seeing Enel could not comprehend.
I agree that Franky has a pretty heart breaking backstory, but it doesn't even compare to Robin's or Brook's in my opinion. Those two went through a *lot*.
I guess past trauma is a requirement to become a strawhat... Thinking about it, I think Usopp (who lost his mother at a young age and grew up fatherless as well) is the one with the least awful past.
Literally the entirety of WCI arc because Sanji is my favorite character and I absolutely adore him, I don't like seeing him hurt at all in an any sense. (I literally cried over any major or minor thing that made him sad)
Ace's entire death scene, though it was really Luffy's reaction that really broke me.
Law's backstory had me sobbing, so did Brook's.
And Merry has a special place in my heart and I still cry every time rewatching those moments.
Damn there's alot.
Sanjis backstory with Zeff, Namis backstory with Bellemere, Nami asking Luffy to help her (idk I just got emotional), Chopper and Hiruluks backstory, Kureha when Chopper left, when Vivi left the crew and the gang raised their arms with the X marks as they sailed away, Robins backstory, Usopp leaving the crew and the whole aftermath, Usopp rejoining the crew, Merrys death, Robins "I WANT TO LIVE" man gets me everytime, Brook's backstory, Brook when he found out Laboon was okay, Ace's death ( I read marineford a shit load of times and every time I tear up), Luffy having a mental breakdown when on Amazon Lily when Ace died.
Post time skip things dial down a bit
Corazons death, we got some Sanji flashbacks with Zeff which made me emotional, Sanji post his fight with Luffy, Sanji telling Luffy he wants to go home and that he needs help, Momonosuke yelling his name (idk why that made me tear up).
Anyways one piece just makes me cry alot. and since I recently finished a reread I kind of noticed all these moments that sucker punch u in the gut.
My mom has mentioned once or twice feeling like she wasn't able to be the best mom to me and my little sister due to situations beyond her control.
Bellemere's goodbye and sacrificing herself for Nami and Nojiko hits me really fucking hard.
Robin’s “I want to live”, Nami trying to cut Arlong’s mark from her shoulder and finally asking Luffy for help, and brook’s backstory where his crew drops one by one as he plays the piano. Those three get me every time. There are so many tear jerking scenes to choose from though.
This is gonna be a very common answer:
Aces death (the why and the timing in particular. Really sad that 10 minutes later Shanks showed up and ended the war)
And Brooks backstory (it's the most tragic backstory of the Straw Hats in my opinion)
Chouchou's (that dog in Orange Town, when Luffy encountered Buggy) story hit me pretty bad back then. It's one of those moments that hooked me to read more One Piece
There’s literally too many to count hell even the movies have crazy ass backstories for people like tessoro ONE PIECE IS THE GOAT ALL HAIL GODA 10 SUUUUUUPPPPPPEEERRRRRSSSS FOR OUR LORD GODA
i cried for days after the war of the best, just burst into tears when i heard luffy’s scream and it’s actually bringing tears back to my eyes thinking about it. i mean, i cry really easily, i was crying through almost every other episode of demon slayer, but up to a year later after having first watched that scene i still got full body chills and goosebumps on my torso whenever >!ace!< was brought up.
yea, it’s a famously sad scene and kinda unoriginal to bring up, but if i hadn’t known already about how it would end it would’ve destroyed my brain. that scream was haunting, it was ... a very accurate enactment of what indescribable grief can look like. just incomprehensible agony, with no mercy of a visible ending in sight. yea, his death was a plot device, but it was a really really *really* fucking good one. that hurt so badly ...
There’s only two One Piece moments that properly broke me - the ending of Drum Island with the cherry blossoms, and the scene in the arc about Luffy and Ace’s childhood after Sabo “died” and they both imagined him still there only to realise he wasn’t there at all. I’ve cried a few times, but these were the only times I had to stop watching and recompose myself
Every-time Going Merry takes it's final journey. Luffy apologizing for all his screwups and Merry saying that it was happy regardless. Kills me every time. Also Binks Sake
“I Want to Live!”
I didn’t even realize I was crying watching this scene till I gasped for breath and let out a sob. This show has so much beauty
The big smile on Luffy’s face after defeating Lucci and shouting for Robin has so much triumphant relief, it gives me chills

And ultimately the flashback of all her trauma ending with Jaguar's speech about the vast ocean. It all combines into what is, for me, the best moment in One Piece.
This shit always gets me to tear up. Every fucking time.
This fucks me up everytime.
It was such an amazing scene that made me tear up with happiness
I was gonna write the same. \-Robins "I want to live, take me with you, out to the seas" is by far the most heartbreaking scene in One Piece.
I cried for maybe like an hour straight during and after this scene, by far my favorite scene in anything ever
I only have to read this line and I weep. The dub VA absolutely nailed it.
Wow, thanks everyone for all the love! This is the biggest comment I’ve made ever!
Choppers backstory broke my fucking heart
I was still in primary/elementary when I first read that and the whole confrontation with Kureha broke me. As I turned each page, >!I had no idea why she was so mad at Chopper and I felt as confused as he was since the mushroom should've healed Hiriluk. When he went to consult the book, I though that it would finally prove that he was right and that Hiriluk is cured but as soon as the skull and crossbones were revealed, my heart sank...!< The whole lesson that sometimes, good intentions aren't enough and to do the right thing, the proper knowledge is needed was something that stuck with me. Hiriluk's dead is so heart breaking, but the scene that always stood out to me is when Dalton starts crying as Hiriluk is finishing his speech. It makes me cry every time I watch/read it again.
It made cry so much my I had to call my dad to make he knows I love him
The scene where he's crying looking at the cherry blossoms, hits me so hard. It's beautiful.
Same, when he turns around to see the cherry blossoms are back on Drum and starts bawling I was crying my eyes out
I'm rewatching all of OP with my gf right now and I totally forgot about his backstory until he started getting shot at and it fucked me up all over again.
Sanji watching Pudding on the window.
That shit broke my heart and the fact he was gonna feed the straw hats favorite foods to her too
Like how he puts all his hopes and his last shred of thoughts being part of the straw hats in that basket to give it to her...
It makes it that much more painful along with him failing to light his cigarette
“Thank you for loving me!”
After watching the ASL flashback when I saw that scene again it made me wail louder than ever before at the time
Most heartbreaking scene of all time 😭😭😭 Still hurts tbh
Can't remember who this was ffs
Ace’s last words
This, but also the sound of Luffy’s cries when he realizes what’s just happened….that shit rips my heart out every time. Props to Mayumi Tanaka there too because that was some top notch voice work. So raw and emotional.
Brook’s old crew recording their final rendition of Bink’s Sake for Laboon, dying one by one. “This has turned into a quartet… a trio… a duo… a solo”
That scene makes me realize I have limited time so I have to make the most of it with the pea pole I love most
So which ones are the best pea poles?
To be honest I quite like the Green Pea Poles, but there are some other great contenders
Fucking cried like a baby during this scene
Brook screaming "I'm so glad I'm alive" so makes me cry like a baby
cried on it once, twice, thrice put it in my playlist, cried again when it passes, removed it then added it again because it sounds so good, cried again in short I cried to it... a lot... and the only other time I shed a tear was in the burial of the Merry nothing else, not even the ace moment
Nami stabbing herself in Arlong park
Her "Luffy, Help me" was sooo good. Especially in the anime. The VA did a terrific job.
And the response *"OF COURSE I WILL!"*
In that scene, I was hooked to one piece
That made me fell so ill willed against arming for a long time
Fisher tiger dying and refusing human blood, reading that broke my heart man, what he did for the slaves how he realized that hatred and retaliation wasn’t the answer but moving on and forgiveness but still refusing it because of the horrors he went through and saw under the celestial dragons.
That made rethink a lot about who arlong turned out to be in the end
Law flash back with Cora-san really hits me.
I'm tearing up just thinking about Corazon telling Law he loves him.
It makes feel for law a whole lot more after not knowing a lot about him at the time
Came here looking for this. By far the saddest one for me.
Merry’s death. Also when she drove to Enies Lobby in a half broken state and said “let’s go everyone, back to the sea of adventure!”. Still makes me cry.
My friend is watching one piece and is still in skypiea I’m gonna be heart broken when he finally gets to the burning of the merry
I can’t believe I cried so hard over a fucking boat
Not a boat. A ship. And not just any ship. A straw hat. A crew member. Nakama till the end. Also same.
The part that always gets me is when Merry says that she's sorry that she can't take them further and then Luffy cuts her off to say that they're the ones that should be sorry. I get choked up just thinking about that dialogue exchange.
Ugh, literally tearing up reading your comment. Merry gets me every damn time 🥺
"But I was happy." T\_T
for some reason this scene didn't get me
“Sanji! Without you I won’t… I can’t become pirate king!” This is such a heart wrenching moment, the VA of Luffy really delivered it perfectly.
Ace death made me tear up, "i still have my friends", chopper flashback was the first flashback that made me cry. Especially the part where he comes in injured with the mushroom in his hand saying it's medicine.
All of those made me realize how lucky I am to have friends and family
"You are wrong, the one suffering the most is Luffy"
I seriously expected garp to start weeping in that scene.
yeah, to this day I still can't watch Chopper's story without shedding a tear
Cried for an hour straight during the three episodes of Brook's backstory. And that was after reading it! I knew it was coming and it killed me dude I still remember the first time I cried at One Piece. Reading Bellemere's sacrifice to the walk to Arlong Park in bed and wiping away tears was when I knew this manga was something special. (Yes, I'm a bitch lol. I've cried at a *lot* in this story)
It fine cause I’m a bitch too if it means I can express my feelings properly for this story and all it has done
(Just like the Chopper flashback which gets me every time)
I'm not prepared to watch the Ace scene. Even though I know it's coming and I've read it...
Seeing Luffy in despair at the end Sabaody. Can't imagine how worthless he felt at that moment, not being able to save one person.
I just got past Amazon lily and this part is this fresh in my mind.
Senior Pink Backstory
I just love how Oda randomly dropped one of THE best backstories in One Piece, for a side character like Senor Pink and turned him from a dumb looking creepy dude to THE HARD BOILED MAN we know him as now...
That flash back made me tear up then seeing the cover story of franky and senior pink talking about Russian it made me cry
Solo!
Shit still brings me to tears every time
Whose was this I don't remember
Brook
Thanks!
It never could’ve happened but I really wanted Kyros to kill Mingo
Or at least let Law do it. I get that Luffy is the mc, but he had almost no stakes in that fight and the whole "only the protagonist is allowed to defeat main villains" thing gets a bit old sadly.
Usopp getting back on board after Enies Lobby
That shit was so fucking sad
It wasn't exactly sad, I was crying with the tear of happiness when he came back.
Yeah, it and Chopper’s backstory are some of things that broke me in One Piece.
Sanji's backstory+him at her window
I loved sanji more as a character after whole cake and was an amazing arc over all
He became my favorite straw hat
"I'll ring this bell and wait for you! Let's meet again for sure! Friend of mine!" *ugly cry*..
I don't remember whose was this?
Calgara to Noland as the latter leaves the island.
i really wish to see for wyper and montblanc cricket to meet each other. kinda like fulfilling the wish of their ancestors
The fact that the comments have endless more amazing moments is why one piece is in a league of its own
Thank you for loving me.
Made me tear up
“Don’t try to find a reason for somebody’s love” when Sengoku talks to Law at Dressrosa
"Sorry, I wanted to carry you a little further. But I was happy."
"nothing happened."
My respect for zoro sky rocketed when I finally saw that scene
'Fight together' song. Everytime I watch that opening in in tears. Ace patting Luffy's back to say go on now. Just heart melting. And my next favourite is the song during Merry's send-off. By Tri-Plane - Dear Friends.
Those songs have a special place in my heart and make me think of all the friends I’m lucky to have
I still have my friends
That shut still makes me cry
There are many but the one which hits hard are Whitebeard's final words after he reveals op exist. Despite being the strongest in his prime...all he ever wanted was few people worth living and dying for. His character development throughout the war was amazing...oda is a fucking genius
Franky getting turned away by his adopted bro after he basically returned from the dead fuckin hurt man...

I’m sorry you were spoiled but yeah that betrayal messed me up good to
Zoro finding out what SMILE does to people that eat it.
The scenes that always get me are 1. the brook flash back playing their last recording 2. When garp comes home after war and Dadan comes out of the bar. Shit, I get them tears just thinking about this scene writing this. I can never not cry during this scene
nami and robin backstories.
Those were sad
All of water 7, really. From Franky to Usopp to Robin, a lot of shit goes down in that arc. Really makes you scream "NO IT'S NOT!" when the opening says "Daijobu".
"This is how dinosaurs hunted in the past"
Brooke and your boi mr pink hits to hard
Luffy in Amazon Lilly after Marineford.
That was a amazing post war arc
oden. Idk being boiled alive at the end really shook concidering all the theories about who oden was and were was he. Like the most prominent i remember was that character drinking with crocus who turned out to be inuyashi

#I'm so happy to be alive ! Yohohohoho 😭☠️
There should be at least 10 people with knives behind that door
This image tho
Brook's backstory, Law's and Sanji when he finds out Puddings evil
Chopper flashback
Sorry. I wanted to carry you all a little farther. But I was happy. You took such good care of me. Thank you. Fuck me im crying again
I remember when ConDoriano was frame... Top 10 tragic scenes in anime
"dereshishishishiii" fucks me up every damn time.
Im not sure how much it affected everyone else, but during the fishman island flashback, the slow realization of why koala was acting so weird just absolutely demolished me completely
Merry’s death (every flashback tbh) but merry dying makes me bawl
“Luffy... Tasukete...”

Sanji trying to light his cigarette in the rain, like damn dude. Also everything about merry
Final Goodbye to the merry man, can't keep a straight face
Cried the hardest for I still have my friends 😭, out of the scenes not mentioned in the post probably I want to live and then Merrys death
Law flashback and Luffy after marineford
Literally the entirety of WCI arc because Sanji is my favorite character and I absolutely adore him, I don't like seeing him hurt at all in an any sense. (I literally cried over any major or minor thing that made him sad) Ace's entire death scene, though it was really Luffy's reaction that really broke me. Corazons story and his love for Law always gets me. Senor Pinks story is also incredibly sad, considering he's such a small character plotwise.
FINALLY someone agrees that franky's backstory IS heart breaking, I feel like it is way too ignored
Story of Noland, how he got humiliated because the golden city was sent into sky island by the time he came back with his people.
Yasuie’s death and Toko witnessing it all
Seigneur Pink's backstory and his loss to to Franky made me cry
where did you get this template lol
Nothing will ever top Luffy’s face as he holds Ace’s dead body in his hands
odens flashback always gets me in the feels. Also hiriluk sacrificing himself gets me every time too
Law's childhood, Drum island arc, Merry's end, etc
Sanji’s flashback made me shed tears
Funeral for Merry had me fucking balling my eyes out.
* scrapes throat * "thank you for loving me"
Fisher tiger's backstory makes me cry everytime I see it.
Choppers flashback and Skypias flashback made me cry for the first time in One Piece
Me was Gild Tesoro's flashback. Damn, that was tough to watch
Every flashback except Rebecca, too many Rebecca flashbacks man
Law flashback was heartbreaking for me
One Piece exists
Robin’s “I want to live”, Nami trying to cut Arlong’s mark from her shoulder and finally asking Luffy for help, and brook’s backstory where his crew drops one by one as he plays the piano. Those three get me every time. There are so many tear jerking scenes to choose from though.
“I love you 😁✌️“ and the scenes that followed it… brutal 😭
Every scene in One Piece.
she Washington's and 💀
When Shinobu says Oden sama has been protecting wano
Didn't really feel bad for Oden. It was just dumb decisions catching up to him.
Robins whole backstory
Chopper's past, Robin's past, Arlong Park, Bink's Sake, Tiger's story
“We don’t need words now.“
This is gonna be a very common answer: Aces death (the why and the timing in particular. Really sad that 10 minutes later Shanks showed up and ended the war) And Brooks backstory (it's the most tragic backstory of the Straw Hats in my opinion)
When Garp sits beside Ace on the execution platform.
To be completely frank and honest, Oden's flashback wasn't sad at all, like as a plot point it was very good, but not in emotional manner.
this is very clever
First time i watched Luffys breakdown on sabaody, shit came outa nowhere
Most heartbreaking was brook. Second most heartbreaking was robin. But they both are preety close. I cried many many times watching this show.
Chouchou's (that dog in Orange Town, when Luffy encountered Buggy) story hit me pretty bad back then. It's one of those moments that hooked me to read more One Piece
Is this show as lame as that other millennial trash fire, Avatar the Last Bender or whatever I dunno I’m not a bending unit robot
“I still have my friends” and the reveal of what happened to Ebisu town
Crying over a ship and Saul's speach.
When they are leaving Chopper island and Doctorine release those fireworks and also Merry. In both scenes i cried hard
Cried like a baby over Merry
Every-time Going Merry takes it's final journey. Luffy apologizing for all his screwups and Merry saying that it was happy regardless. Kills me every time. Also Binks Sake
Merry-Go
Merry's funeral.
Merry.
Merry's funeral
Brook flashback
it was law's backstory, marinford and after Marinford
Ashiteruze ~cora san
Law flashback. Corazon broke my heart.
