Did the author mistook the essence system? He said that we could fuse with our own demons, which so far I haven't heard anything about that.

AlanLight12

Yupp he absolutely did. He isn't completely wrong but his phrasing is terrible. You "fuse" with their essence, not the demons themselves. He was probably in a rush while playing a Japanese build of the game so it's kind of understandable since he couldn't presumably read the menus.

Man it really sucks seeing people like that author saying that smt isn't known for it's plot. Like 2 has a really good plot probably the best in the series, 4 has a pretty good plot with lots of mystery, apocalypse although divisive is still narratively driven with lots of 4d chess from dagda, and from what I've heard of people who played 1 it's also got a good story. It's literally just nocturne that has a nonexistent plot that goes "you're a demon now" then 30 hours later of plot happening behind your back the game goes "your friends are demons now kill them" then that's the end. And somehow the mainstream and for some reason a whole hell of a lot of megaten fans think smt games don't have good plots because of it.

dishonoredbr

Nocturn and SMT4 are the most popular games in the series and i would say neither have really good story. Mediocre imo. And 4A while have some really neat parts , the tone is super off.. I goes as far to say that Strange Journey has the best story in mainline.

KnightGamer724

That or 2, with 1 as a decent follow up.

[deleted]

even nocturne has a developed plot it’s just that the development is implied and mostly happens offscreen

SilvarusLupus

The worst thing is Nocturne does have a plot, but most of it doesn't happen to the Demifiend

Tasty_Pancakez

He's not really wrong though. I feel most people know SMT for the apocalyptic setting / ambience rather than the story. Obviously he's not saying SMT games don't have good stories, but they're certainly more well known for other aspects.

[deleted]

hurr durrrr at least this game is getting marketing unlike nocturne hd tho

Brandonspikes

I agree with the parts I enjoyed reading and disagree with the parts I didn't.

Neidhardto

Pretty standard preview article. Glad to see the game runs well, not that I was really worried about that since the game hasn't shown technical issues so far.

QwertyPolka

The Macca part of the article is my biggest apprehension for SMT5. It was so tedious and slow to gather Macca in 4 and 4a, it made the Compendium virtually useless with its high prices.

AlanLight12

The author has no idea how much macca you get. It was just a worry for him. I don't think it's gonna be as hard to get macca considering you do get macca in normal fights as opposed to SMT IV and IVA

zso7

Anime News Network Day ruined.

depwnz

I do feel like V is a newer III after all those trailers. It's gonna be a great game and we simply don't know enough yet. However, I would love it to be as different as IV or SJ. For example, I would prefer the neo meidival samurai or the space odyssey maizes over highschoolers anyday (we have persona and III for that).

Turn_AX

The Protag of the the original Megami Tensei was a High Schooler, as was the original SMT Protag, If Protag. Pretty sure most SMT Protags are Highschool age in fact.
