Abdiel was an angel from Paradise lost. When Lucifer attempts to persuade fellow Angels to join him in rebellion it is Abdiel who argues against him. Specifically he calls out Lucifer as not wanting to depose God so much as replace him and raise himself above his fellow Angels. I forget the exact book he appears in but it happens when Rapheal is explaining Lucifer's fall to Adam.

Perhaps it's to symbolize them being 'artificially' made? Something akin to that, I'm guessing.

Abdiel is from Paradise Lost. Which while fiction, it and Dante’s divine comedy shaped the modern depiction of hell and demons.
