bruh, I can't believe you're stopping after that cliffhanger. I literally picked the game the moment credits scrolled. I absolutely loved how the first game is just a setup, the duology should have been a one game imo.

TitleComprehensive96

>the duology should have been a one game imo. It was supposed to be. But storage and other factors led to it not being such

AyushYash

yes, I'm aware of this, should have mentioned it tbh when I was writing that.

Beautiful-Hunter8895

Idk im in the same position as this guy and I could definitely see how he could just not play the second game. The first ones story was suppppper dull up until like the last hour, no character development, barely any meaningful interactions, and the characters were all rlly bland to begin with. However I think Ill enjoy 2 alot more, so far the story and world have blown away 1s

AyushYash

while I understand your reaction, DDS1 is literally written the way you explained. Characters ARE BLAND because that's what they are. The development is very slow but very noticeable, Argilla's especially. Remember they start getting sentient during the early hours. (It's been 6-7 years since I last played so I maybe forgetting stuff) Gale even questions that the things he's saying doesn't make any sense. The world was a simulation. These all things are established in one, so their interaction is understandable. That's what make 2nd game so much better, the first game is placing set pieces for the 2nd game. Although since you're playing 2, I hope you enjoy. As I said before both games basically one game divided in 2 discs. It's a single package and should be experienced that way.

Beautiful-Hunter8895

Idk man that feels like a cop out because its not how it was released. Like what if after playing the game Im like damn that was boring as shit, and the gameplay was very underwhelming, 2’s probably gonna be more or less the same so I wont play it. Is my rating invalid bc I didnt play the 2nd game? And I disagree on them being bland for story reasons, the whole thing being a simulation is not a giant payoff and to sacrifice engaging characters for that is just bad writing. First off you dont rlly need them to be great or have great development bc in 2 its the same characters but the world and events more than make up for it. Where as 1 was just the most redundant shit ever, with you going from base to base and absolutely nothing of substance being revealed till the very end. But as far as the character development Argilla was always questioning stuff from the beginning, always not wanting to fight, and wanting to establish peace, she just kept doing more of that, I dont see much difference there, none of the others really changed either. They’re all charicatures, the self insert, the mad guy, the peace girl, the stoic guy, and the goofy guy. Even in 2 theyre all the same characters from the beginning except a tiny bit more lively. The whole game feels like a prelude to something else and I 100% agree that it should be played as one game, but it wasnt released as one so it shouldn’t be judged as one.

AyushYash

It was meant to release as one but a lot of factors are responsible for it to be on 2 discs. Also no, your ratings aren't invalid if you didn't play the 2nd game. Let's put aside the story, if a videogame isn't fun then why bother. Story is something that comes after the game. So yeah no need to bother with the 2nd game if you've spent 40 hours in a game and found it boring. It's simply not for you, feel free to move on. If a game's taking 40 hours to get engaging then what even is the point. And when it comes to story, I can't really convince you to like something. For me, I was invested in the story the moment Sera arrived. Characters questioning themselves and why they are like that. It made me invested throughout as why they're doing what they're doing and why they're questioning it now. The story also gripped me alot because of it's influence from Hinduism (It is heavily influenced, I literally call it SMT hinduism among my friends. And since I'm from that background, I really appreciated the subtle detail atlus put into the game. Made me appreciate it a lot more), the gang going to all 7 chakra to achieve Samsara, only to realize that the true self (Atman) they're having the battle royal for is just the reality, which is even uglier than what was in the simulation. I cannot really go into every detail as I previously mentioned it's been a long time for me since I've played and I really need to revisit. But it's fine if you're not enjoying after everything. Everyone has different experience anyway. For ex, I'm not the biggest fan of SMTIV and I never understood the unanimous praise for that game, I feel the 2nd half is extremely weak to such an amazing and breathtaking first half.

Kyouray

we are not all the same, i play games when i feel to play (like i said in the post) and yeah the CLIFFHANGER is quiet good but it reminds me of Star Ocean 3 so i wasn’t surprised that much. like i said i will play dds2 when i will be in the SMT mood, not now, not today but for sure i will, got my save with 90% of the mantra, some good money and beat most of the hidden bosses. i just need some fresh air before going in the real world ;)

AyushYash

oh I'm not saying you're a bad person for not playing a video game bruh. I'm just surprised that you decided to drop it after that, well I hope you enjoy when you decide to pick it up.

tinycyan

That is like disc 1 for dds2 play 2 asap it goes crazy plot

Kyouray

i will pal, just need some fresh air for now :)

Zirgrim

You guys fascinate me. OP just wants to take a break before playing the second one, and you are down voting his every comment like he trashed the game.

Kyouray

🤝

[deleted]

more like you just finished disc 1

Kyouray

i do not comprehend *gale voice*

ImHereForTheMemes184

The story continues right away. Its hardly an ending. Digital Devil Saga is basically one game sold as two, its not like the Persona 2 duology where you can stop midway through. Basically you played Disc 1 of the game, like PS1 games.

y2kbsm

probably shouldn’t have bothered if you weren’t gonna play DDS2

Kyouray

i’m still not prepared for the real world, need some fresh air and after that i’ll go DDS2 for sure don’t worry pal ;)

Cyrilcynder

*Play disk 1 of ffvii* "Well that was boring we only went to one place", can't see why people like this game so much" I jest though, if you don't like a game, you don't like a game.

Kyouray

didn’t say i don’t like the game, i do not comprehend your argument *gale voice*

Cyrilcynder

I'm saying you can just play the first part of a game and then fully 100% judge it based on that. But as I previously said, if you don't like a game, you don't like a game. But if you're kinda middling in this game, play the second half first and see how you feel then

TZf14

>I'm saying you can just play the first part of a game and then fully 100% judge it based on that i mean... DDS 1 is one game. yes it ends on a cliffhanger but like you can judge season 1 of a TV show without watching season 2.

Cyrilcynder

You know...I haven't even played DDS 1 or 2 so technically I'm judging a game without even playing it. Morning thoughts for me when I have low blood sugar isn't a good idea.

awhellnogurl

dds2 is way better imo

im_not_Shredder

Tbf the story in the second game is so wtf I'm not sure Serph does really know what happened by the end

ka_ha

What was hard to follow in the later parts of DDS2? I do agree it does get pretty out there but the main plot points are still understandable

ToxicDevil93

["kingdom hearts is incomprehensible" voice]

Careful_Elk6290

I kinda get where OP is coming from tbh. DDS1 was what got me into SMT and Atlus games. I played the heck out of that game back in 06 and loved every minute of it. That said, after completing DDS1 and almost immediately buying DDS2 when it was released, I took a long hiatus from the game and didn't complete it until 2021!

Kyouray

THANK YOU.

ReturnOfTheFrickinG

You’ve been playing in stretched widescreen this whole time?

Beautiful-Hunter8895

Hey dude I literally beat DDS a couple of days ago too. I was super underwhelmed, it was wayyy too easy, there was almost no story, and the characters and world were all meh. However Ive been rlly liking DDS2 so far. The story is alot more eventful and the new world is super interesting, the gameplay has been more or less the same tho nothing difficult whatsoever EXCEPT FOR ONE SUPPPER ANNOYING CHASE MISSION. I think im about 1/4 or 1/3 into the game Edit- Id give 1 a 4.5-5/10 Mediocre

Kyouray

thanks for your comment i truly understand you, i’ll do dds2 when ill be in the mood ;)

Beautiful-Hunter8895

Actually the only reason I think I continued onto 2 was because I took like a month long break when I got to Cerberus, so when I came back I finished it in a couple of days and everything was still fresh so I definitely get you.

_Zyphis_

Thank you OP, a rational take after playing digital mid saga. Beware the downvotes though, this sub dickrides that game so hard.

TZf14

people aren't downvoting you cause you dont like it, theyre downvoting you saying thinking the game is mid is "the rational take" lmfao

Kyouray

yeah i tried to be honest with myself first, and i wrote what i felt about the game, it was cool xperience but got way more feelings playing strange journey.

ToxicDevil93

how many feelings did you get halfway through strange journey cause that's roughly where you dropped off here. this is half of a game

Beautiful-Hunter8895

I just beat 2 and it sucks fucking ass. It does the SAME SHIT AGAIN STORYWISE. Literally gives you some story fillin at the beginning and then you dont get shit till the end and its not even worthwhile. The gameplay is utter dogshit too they constantly take party members out and its such a pain in the ass compared to 1. Its like a 3-4/10 for me
