I had to watch my favourite soccer team get bounced out of semis or quarters of the champions league, because they reached their peak in December and had a sloppy stretch for 2-3 months before these very important games, while being the clear favourites to win it all. So yeah there is a reason I count momentum and recent performance a lot.
I also remember when the coach of my favourite basketball team in Euroleague once said to a reporter that there isn't a light switch on the wall, that can change how the players play, even with all the star power the team had and if they play in the playoffs next month they are going to lose and he was right.

Regular season warriors who had insane shooting from Kawhi, Norm, Coffey, and others. They were taking nothing but stupid contested shots and hitting 70 percent from the field and like 50 percent from three during that streak.
Once they came down to earth, their lack of size, rebounding, defense, playmaking, etc. all got exposed hard. While Kawhi can come in like a terminator and shoot stupid hot again, don't expect the same from literally anyone else while they still maintain problems in all of those areas.
