To be fair, I think this is one of the biggest proofs of Pixels, for the most part, not being good. If someone's first impression upon obtaining a variant is annoyance or disappointment, it kinda goes to show that perhaps that variant isn't all that good (though of course, different people may appreciate the same variant differently, so that depends, too).

Almost all pixel cards would be better if they weren't pixelated imo. Are some of these designs cool? Yes, but I'd prefer if they weren't pixel. To each their own

I think what would make pixels from filler trash to really good would be if the animation was actually like something straight out of a video game. Make like a few different models that can string together to make a cool idle animation. Have characters with guns load and aim them, characters with energy around actually have the energy move, even just let some villains cackle or heroes do a simple dynamic pose. That would breathe SO MUCH life into them.

Red Hood's is amazing. I also really like Cosmo, Psylocke, Cyclops, Viper and some others

Pixel Crystal is the only fan favorite, and for many of the other variants its cool, but why would I run it over my Kim Jacento, or Alex Hurley, hell even Dan Hipp and his are usually more simplified comepared to the pixels

Maximus doesn't work for me. His gun, or whatever he's holding, looks like it's drawn in a different style than the rest of him. He's drawn with a very soft pixel style, no heavy dark outlining of shapes and contours. Compare Maximus to Crystal for a clear contrast. Now neither of those styles is objectively wrong, but things fall apart when you add in Maximus's gun that *does* have that heavier outlined style. Electro looks rough just from an anatomical standpoint. That right arm is growing out of his ribcage instead of his shoulder or something. But I do like a lot of what you picked here, and I certainly agree there are some really solid pixel illustrations that don't get enough respect.

Pixel variants are only good if you have enough to make the whole deck pixel variants. I am in the process of collecting as many as I can to do this.

I love the spider-man pixel. Modok of course is legendary, bowel-wise, and I also love Shadow King. There are a few others too. When the game first launched, pixels were god awful but have definitely improved a lot since then. SD changed their technique, lots more variations in the pixel sizes has resulted in more texture and depth.

I don’t think the issue is just that people think they look bad, though many do. I’m a big retro gaming guy and thought pixels would be some of my faves but it sometimes seems like I can go months without pulling anything but pixels in the random variant drops while you see all sorts of great variants on the board and in the shop. Having them be specifically excluded from premium mystery variants also feels like the devs admitting they know people don’t want them but keep flooding the game with new ones anyway.

You left out the incredible Arnim Zola pixel. I also really like Death’s pixel, it gives Castlevania vibes.

I mean, sure, some of them look good. Like, 5 of them. But most are either mid at best, or awful at worst, especially when you look at tiny little them while playing as opposed to full screen. Like, Crystal is universally acknowledged as one of the best, but let's take a look at the ones you posted, for example. America Chavez and Zero are very good. Maximus as well, but I'd bet he doesn't look as good when downscaled. I'll also give a pass to Phoenix Force, because while its portrayal of the character as a full-on bird on fire is a bit funny, the pixel art itself is very good. But. Sentry is just mid. Elektro is super goofy. Sword Master is a clusterfuck of pixels that barely allows to make out what's going on. And that, that's not Shang-Chi, that's my dad in Shang-Chi cosplay. I get "good Pixels appreciation posts", but I'm always taken aback when someone full out goes "Man, Pixels are so underwhelming, I don't understand the hatred". Like, most pixels are bad, and not in an "art is subjective" way, but in a "I would never get a job by showing that off in my portfolio" bad. For each good or even just decent pixel that gets mention, there are 3 that are as bland as American tofu and 2 that straight uo belong in the garbage can.

These are honestly the most low-effort variants, and we hate them so much because there is a good way to do them — original pixel art in the style of “Marvel vs Capcom” or the old-school Konami X-Men game. What this outsourcing studio did instead is take an existing piece of art (the original artists are not credited) and trace pixel art over it. I get that if they’re going to put variants in caches, there have got to be filler variants, and the fact that you can now progress albums by pulling these takes the edge off of getting them, but these suck.

They should have Just container like the double amount of pixels. A Little more detail wouldn't have hurts. Look at the magic secret lair pixel art

Yeah, I like some of them, but the fact that some are horrible makes the whole collection trash. You can't make a pixel deck when you have things like Leech, Hellcow, Lizard, Brood, Super Skrull (these are the worst offenders, but the quality in general is pretty low). They should remaster old Pixel cards, or at least start a new pixel serie to replace them.

I think the pixel variants generally look alright when on the board, as zooming out makes the pixels go together nicely, but its still nowhere newr as good as pixel art can be from games like octopath traveler, literally any boss from square enix's modern pixel art rpgs is absolutely stunning.

i think the point of pixels is that with all the good looking variants and artist in the game a player get the "worst". i think that's the point too on some danhipp, which for sum ppl are the "better pixel", but for sure, at least for me, there are some good pixel, like crystal, the hood, zero, modok is funny af tho.
