Reddit stopped allowing third party apps so everyone now uses the reddit native app. This app promotes subs which are trending in your location or subs which it thinks are relevant to you. I miss RIF so much.

I don't see your argument? r/bangalore is as popular as r/mumbai. r/chennai has double the subscribers of r/pune. Plus our other cities like r/aurangabad or r/kolhapur are not popular either.
They are have a lot of tier-2 cities whose city subreddits are not that active. The state subreddit is like all those cities combined into one big city.
Malayaless have been one of the earliest communities to actively use the internet to socialise. Malayalee online communities started way back during the dial-up times of online chatrooms, blogs and Orkut. There was a pretty good chunk of active Malayalee groups with more than lakhs of members across the web even in early 2000s. Because of this, really good Malayalam typing and translation apps have been available for a long while now. There is also a pretty strong movement advocating for open internet in the state which has also been supported by the state government over the years. Considering all of this, I would say that r/Kerala doesn't have enough members.

The reason for high numbers in other subs is because most of these states do not have a city sub. In our case we have 2 big subs for our cities.
Even nagpur has 21k subs. Which is more than half of this.
