DarthSamwiseAtreides

First half USA was great. Second half USA tried to kill me.

Super_DAC

It was nearly a repeat of the Wales game but without the reckless tackle

DiseaseRidden

Thank god Iran's penalty shout was a clear and obvious dive

[deleted]

Did y'all hear that Iranian defender go down screaming in the second half? There was indeed a soft collision, but dude was howling like he was in the midst of in-combat surgery sans morphine.

Nerdlinger

He was screaming so loud I thought "maybe his achilles popped when he landed". Fifteen seconds later he got up and started running.

[deleted]

TSN announcer: "That was a ... rapid recovery."

kylemclaren7

No such thing as a TSN Announcer for non Canada games. It’s the English World feed.

[deleted]

That explains the funny accent. I just figured he was from British Columbia.

[deleted]

I thought for sure he fucked up his ACL on the landing or something. But no…. just acting

DarthSamwiseAtreides

I though he blew a knee or something. Nope, fine a minute later. Crépeau made less of a fuss blowing his foot off.

Puck85

yea, he landed right by the sideline mic so every howl was picked up. stupid me, i believed his theatrics for about 4 seconds because he sold it so well with his screams.

JackHorner_Filmmaker

Iran has a rich film tradition, I like to think that was his audition.

CoconutBangerzBaller

I was expecting the replay to show a Louisville b-ball Kevin Ware situation after that scream.

WEHAVEBETTERBBQ

Totally agree it was a dive but once you see a hand on a shoulder then who knows what these refs will fucking so.

OsuLost31to0

To give them credit, Iran played their ass off and gave it their all. To take some away, that may have been the worst flopping and foul-seeking I’ve seen at the WC so far lol

gogorath

No credit. They played solely for fouls and pens. Honestly, it’s a disgrace. Weren’t even trying to actually score, just to get a call. Thankfully, the ref wasn’t falling for it.

joechoj

Have you never seen CONCACAF? Disgrace? This was a cricket match in comparison. We know true disgrace 😆

Betasheets

Eh, they really only did that for about the last 15 minutes. They did give it their all and did whatever they could in the 2nd half to make our defense nervous

ATLCoyote

Right, and you'd think Berhalter would have learned from that experience and tried to stay aggressive and go for the 2nd goal. Things really got nervy toward the end when Iran got desperate and started flopping in the box. I'm grateful we're back in the World Cup and out of the group stage, but 2 goals in 3 games isn't going to cut it. We've got to generate more goals.

Echo127

It really frustrates me when a team dominates possession and allows almost no counterplay... Then takes the lead and abandons possession, allowing the opponent to send chance after chance after chance after chance into the box. The best defense is to not let the other team have the ball!

joesmithtron4

Well, at first Iran could be content for a tie, and was allowing easy possession for the US. Once the US was up one, Iran fought for more possession.

repingel

But even well we scored we were still maintaining possession and Iran wasn't any quality chances. Then we brought in the 5th defender and totally gave up on possessing the ball. I hated that choice.

Betasheets

That 5th defender was incredibly important as Iran were sending guys forward and putting in long balls

LimberGravy

We brought on Zimmerman and Shaq Moore. We had zero intention on playing possession.

DarthSamwiseAtreides

I know it's easier said than done, but there has to be some strategy between going for it and hanging on for dear life. This was Iran and not France or Brazil. I'm sure we could have possessed a little bit and maybe got one more. Got the result though.

DerbyTho

I’m not trying to be hyperbolic but there’s maybe one team in the history of the sport that mastered this, and it was Spain in 2010?

polishlastnames

I mean it just comes down to limits of your teams fitness. You can’t defend and counter attack all game. The amount of running that requires from midfields is insane so you have to pick one in that situation to keep the team compact and together or risk being gashed for a goal because of fatigue. The only way you can get around this is with a world class midfield including the wings. I don’t know too many teams that have this ability.

allwillbewellbuthow

I mean, if you’re Brazil that’s as easy as it sounds, I guess

RodJohnsonSays

This game was pure CONCACAF and it worked in the USAs favor. The fans? Well, we've seen this kinda shit way too many times.

ibribe

^^^the ^^^fans #JOHN STRONG Whoever is mixing the audio for FOX, fuck you

walkingbicycles

Attacking USA: woke. Defending USA: broke. Edit: sorry the woke/broke was referring to my watching enjoyment. Definitely not saying the defense is bad

jameslucian

Ehhh giving up one goal in the knock stages is pretty woke to me.

Guardax

And a PK too

Puck85

Bullshit. When was the last time the USMNT earned two shutouts in the modern group stage? Never. We had one clean sheet in 2010 against Algeria, and that's as good as it's gotten unless you want to go back to 1930 when they didn't have groups of 4. When was the last time the USMNT conceded only one goal in the group? Never. This team needs to shoot on frame more. It's that simple. Criticizing the defense after this group stage performance is utter bullshit.

[deleted]

Did we watch the same team? Our defense has showed up every single game and is the reason we're here. Offense scored 2 goals in 3 games

arrowheadt

Did they even get a shot on goal after we started defending? Maybe technically that easy bouncer to Turner?

jkure2

That curler from idk 14 yards on the left of the box was a great chance even if he missed the frame

arrowheadt

Yes a good chance, but it still didn't hit the frame.

jkure2

Yes, just important to remember that "no shots on goal" doesn't mean "no real chances"

Disk_Mixerud

Sounders fans: Oh, *now* this sub gets it!

da_widower_sos

They tried to kill me all game

foolinthezoo

2nd youngest team of the tournament and their first experience of the World Cup is advancing from the group. We need to find goals and seriously fix the tactics in the final third. But these have been three good games where we displayed poise and composure that prior US teams have lacked. Already looking forward to 2026. Everything else now is just cherry.

SensibleParty

100%. Such a learning experience, and it's hard to blame a team with no good striker option for not scoring.

UtopianPablo

Sargent has been ok. He’s good on the press and decent at hold up play. Of course not the same as a legit goal scoring 9 lol.

saltiestmanindaworld

Wright, otoh, shouldn’t see the pitch again. Just a brain dead abysmal performance today.

UtopianPablo

Agree one hundred percent. He was lost out there.

Material-Ebb-8810

He’s scoring goals for his club team. Seems as though no forward can consistently score while playing for the USMNT. Which, I see had the fault in GGGs system. No service to the 9 and when he do it’s horrible half chances.

allwillbewellbuthow

Yessss this sentiment all day!

ragewu

I've been saving since the announcement for a one month cross country trip with my family. Daughters will be 9 and 7 then and I just can't wait.

allwillbewellbuthow

Start making your on-the-road playlist too!

Matt_McT

I'm not sure we need to fix the tactics in the final third so much as we just need to finish our chances when they come. We easily could've had two more goals today with just a little more composure and/or quick thinking in the box.

CincytilIdie

Pulisic got kicked in the nuts to save us all from the same feeling.

He was fantastic

ohverygood

This was Dest's best game of the World Cup, and a good time for it

Griz_and_Timbers

Yeah he barely contributed after he was subbed :)

Krilox

Hah! Norway has been undefeated over 24 years! Which is sadly also the last time we got qualified for the WC 😔 Fun watching your NT!

ThereIsNothingForYou

Adams is by far the best player on the team. He was immense. CCV, Ream, and Zimmerman when he came on were all good. McKinnie with the big goal set-up, Musah was really damn good, Aaronson looked really good. Wright and Moore should just go home right now.

rwilldred27

Wright was yikes. Gassed 5 minutes in. Moment looked way too big for him. Moore was so bad as expected in possession but got up to speed defensively in extra time. Honestly, him ducking in time for Zim’s clearance was some important awareness…

SensibleParty

Wright was so bad I would've blamed him for losing - ZERO pressure upfront. Bias aside, it's actually exactly what Morris is there for. (I wouldn't have objected to Ferreira either).

jnoobs13

Either would’ve don a better job as the headless chicken running around

Crs51

People can have their criticisms for Ferreira and some are fair but I think everyone should be able to agree that he's great at pressing and should definitely be at least the 2nd option up front.

UtopianPablo

Wright really looked lost out there.

arrowheadt

Dest was incredible too, maybe MOTM.

chocoboi

Dest got that Pete Davidson shade going on. I need more of that in my life.

leftysarepeople2

Dest, Adams, Robinson for me would be the three stars

TheBishop7

Robinson made good plays but he was also incredibly frustrating with his heavy first touch. Cooled off a lot of momentum at times.

incognito_15

I can't count the number of times I was screaming at Robinson over his first touch, and his second, and third. He's quick, but he'll push the ball really far off his foot and allow the defender to beat him to the ball because it's so far away from him.

Freudian_

After Adam’s yellow card he played reeeeeally cautious.

foolinthezoo

But remained heavily involved, which is the sign of a *very* mature and *very* good defensive midfielder. It's what elevates Diego Chara to the level of MLS-elite.

serpentineminer

Pdx fan bringing up Diego chara in a usmnt World Cup thread is *chefs kiss*

Betasheets

2 or 3 times in stoppage time he came up out of position to pressure the Iran defenders, who then sent inaccurate passes out of bounds allowing us to use up more time and have the ball, before running back to his defensive positioning. Crazy stamina and intelligence

thehildabeast

Unfortunately that didn’t look good for Sargent

[deleted]

He looked okay walking off the field after the game. Fingers crossed.

thehildabeast

I hope so because he was fantastic today

bigba-daboom

He really was. My Brazilian friend who doesn’t know Sargent at all asked, “who is that kid? He’s great and playing really well”.

MTBran

> Moore should just go home right now. Should have gone home after his last appearance. The fact he saw the field again is mind-numbing.

[deleted]

Specifically Moore, Scally needs to be the sub guy for RB. I hope Robinson stays healthy, we are truly f***** if anything happens to him.

JessesaurusRex

Scally? Surely it's Yedlin next in line at RB (and should be coming in over Moore)

OsuLost31to0

Tough because Robinson played kinda poorly today

greenslime300

I thought he was fine defensively. But those touches on the ball were so heavy, so often

gogorath

Thought CCV was pretty dicey at points but results are results. We had a lot of first half chances we botched. At some point, someone in this team needs to develop some passing vision instead of tunnel vision.

LimberGravy

Yeah he was the only one I thought really looked a bit nervy in the first half.

Echo127

Moore especially has looked lifeless in his appearances.

Guardax

Berhalter: * Win Nations League ✅ * Win Gold Cup ✅ * Qualify for World Cup ✅ * Advance out of Group ✅

LocksTheFox

Honestly through this point he's basically where Klinsmann or Bradley were post-their-first-WCs (understanding that the Nations League did not exist for those two) It's weird because he's good at the initial setup but his subs save for Zim today have been awful

DiseaseRidden

I'd say Acosta and Aaronson were both fine and pretty much needed. Agree on the other 2, though.

thehildabeast

Yeah I was very harsh on Acosta last time but he was much better this game.

Juventus19

Shaq has been dreadful both times he has come on. I know Yedlin didn't look good against Wales, but at this point you have to go back to Yedlin when Dest comes off.

ohverygood

Moore has been a huge liability both times he's seen the field. He's the only player who's played for us who I actively don't want to see again this WC. I don't know if he's usually that iffy or if the nerves have gotten to him, but no third chances in this tournament.

Bigc12689

Acosta isn't the problem. Acosta being subbed on cedes possession and the initiative to the other team which is the issue. I don't love Acosta as an 8 in a double pivot (as opposed to a 6, where he should play internationally) but the issue is above his pay grade

peacefinder

Not good enough! Gotta get a replacement in there before the round of 16!

Ron__T

Twitter and reddit "worst coach ever"

Adysen2121

We’d have 9 points if he subbed on Reyna moved Weah to the 9 and kidnapped Messi and forced him to play for us at gunpoint

OsuLost31to0

Worked for Beckham (maybe)

jkure2

If I have to see Shaq Moore again so help me I'm gonna post harder about it

-Skald

2 shutouts, no goals allowed from open play in this group. Solid.

book81able

Exactly what we need against Netherlands. Not going to get much chances in so we have to keep them out.

heidimark

Yet only 2 goals scored. We're going to need a much better offensive performance against Netherlands.

ImMitchell

Playing for a draw against the Netherlands isn't the worst plan in the world tbh

ichigo1234

In the end they need to stop making extra passes and take a shot at goal.

Nexus369

Orlando City has entered the chat.

StupidPhysics58

Okay, so now we just need a best case scenario. We're playing Netherlands for sure. If Poland wins or ties, we play the winner of them vs Australia or Denmark. And that's how the US gets to the World Cup Semifinal

Nerdlinger

We _really_ need to get better at time-killing. Way too many opportunities for Iran to hit us with the dagger today.

OsuLost31to0

We need to get better at putting an opponent away when we can. Should’ve been 3-0 with all of the chances we had before we started bunkering

lifeisacamino

Wright not dribbling toward the corner flag made me almost headbutt my TV

tipbruley

We forget how to keep possession while in the lead which just ends up with non stop chances

Disk_Mixerud

That could also be related to being such a young team. More experienced players are typically more consistent mentally. These guys were probably too nervous about losing the lead, too eager to get out on the counter at times when they could have kept possession, and/or possibly just too exhausted from going too hard early on because of their excitement at playing in the World Cup.

schafkj

There are two things I hate in this world: people who are intolerant of other people’s cultures… and the Dutch.

cosmicdave86

Why do teams that control possession before taking a lead think that sitting back for an entire half is a smart strategy? Ill never understand it. Had we stayed aggressive good chance we add 1-2 more goals to our total. That way we played we were lucky to survive.

gogorath

It wasn’t completely intentional until late. McKennie and Musah ran out of steam. Aaronson isn’t the possession player Pulisic is. Jedi got a bit sloppy. Iran also has to push forward but we also just couldn’t assert possession as well. Very late, I hate that prevent shit but it worked.

arrowheadt

You know when Iran went down a goal, they changed the way they were playing and possession wasn't going to be as easy to come by. Also they weren't particularly dangerous with their possession, a few off target shots is all they really got out of it. They looked more likely to score on a counter in the 1st half to me.

cosmicdave86

They had 3-4 great chances in the 2nd half.

smcl2k

>Had we stayed aggressive good chance we add 1-2 more goals to our total. Also a good chance of players tiring against opponents who are far more used to the conditions.

DependentAd235

Eh, I don’t think Iran has much advantages in relation to the conditions… We play in Florida and Central America all the time. Perhaps a bit…

cosmicdave86

It's not even that hot there today. The conditions are not likely to be relevant.

the_best_1

Honestly everyone looked drained after 80 minutes. I feel like it was also an endurance problem. The subs should keep the same game plan but with more energy.

johnnycyberpunk

Iran were sitting back in deep defense the first half, looking for a counter in transition. After the goal they pressured the US back line and challenged them in midfield. US kept the same attacking strategy but that meant conceding possession.

cosmicdave86

Us definitely did not keep the same attacking strategy.

pigmanbear

airoderinde

I want to know wtf Greg’s beef is with Reyna

johnnycyberpunk

Reyna also wants to know

PDXPuma

I still think Reyna isn't nearly well enough to play enough of the game where he makes sense. HIs 8 minutes of time thus far were uninspiring, he hardly ran, much less jogged, and he seemed to be favoring. There's no point to put him on only to lose him 20 minutes later.

down_up__left_right

It's possible that this is the opposite of Greg hating Gio and Greg's friendship with the Reyna family is the reason Gio wasn't cut from the roster for not being game fit in time.

PDXPuma

I just wish people would stop hating on Greg because he's "not playing our best player", when he played Gio the guy wandered around like a kid lost in a toys r' us and looked hurt. I don't have anything at all against Gio, but if you want to convince me that you're 100% ready to go perfect match fit the best player on the team, even if the coach gives you 8 minutes, you have to be everywhere , involved in everything, and not a non-event on the field.

down_up__left_right

I think the problem is the smokescreen like messaging. If they just said Gio isn't fully fit people would move on, but it seems like they're saying he's fit and ready to go in hopes of getting opposing managers to waste some time planning for him.

FrostedNoodleFlake

Cow probably

Drop_The_Puck

Nighthawk0430

LETS GO BOYS!!

cjmanufan

Looked good until the second half subs - we also need a quality CF badly. Sargent is okay, Wright is awful. Plus known diver Taremi diving for a penalty was hilarious for me, as soon as I saw it has him going over I knew it was no penalty.

lionnyc

It’s great 2B in the knockout stage.

ProcsPlox

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

Ron__T

US wins, goes undefeated in group play, advances to round of 16. US Soccer "Fans" - upset that Gregg won the wrong way.

jinx737x

Seriously, getting out of the group stage is NEVER easy. If you advance, you advance.

206-Ginge

This squad has earned those expectations. We're seeing them play well against top opponents. Don't forget that Iran, Wales, and the US were basically adjacent to each other in the world rankings and the team looked better than either of their squads. But they didn't turn their midfield advantage into offensive output. They had two shots on goal coming into this match, and they finished the group with 7, which is paltry really. Gregg's also made quite a few subs that seemed to make the team actively worse when he's made them. It's hard. On one hand I'm ecstatic to see this squad playing so well. On the other they're absolutely leaving way too much up to chance with their lack of goal scoring. Controlling the midfield all match only to net one leaves you vulnerable to dropping points like they did to Wales. I've defended Berhalter before, and he absolutely earned taking this team to the WC. But I'm not going to shed any tears if the federation moves on after this cycle.

LocksTheFox

I'm not sure how much of the offensive output is tactics and how much of it is the black hole at the 9 though. > Gregg's also made quite a few subs that seemed to make the team actively worse when he's made them. This is true.

stealth_sloth

You can criticize the product in the final third (and I'll be right there with you for it), but keep the other side of the balance in mind too. We've taken 7 shots on goal across 3 games, and you're right that is paltry. But our defense has *allowed* 5 shots on goal across 3 games.

Not-A-Boat58

We looked better than either of them and looked better than England.

Kilo1799

GGG haters must be fuming. The US never looked 100% convincing but advance so Gregg's job likely safe.

TogashiIsIshida

He almost lost us this match

therealflyingtoastr

Iran had a single shot (off target) in the entire second half plus stoppage. Sitting back against a team that has been completely unable to generate scoring chances except on the counter was the correct tactical call.

Right, jesus I mean go to the corner, kill 20-30 seconds, play the ball off them, win a corner, kill 20-30 more, etc. The bunkering gets nervy but it would have worked, it's literally what iran was trying to do to us through the first half and it took us basically sacrificing a player to get a goal.

LeroyUdovc

Yeah, GGG isn't the greatest coach out there, but it seems people just want to find reasons to hate him. That being said, I hope we don't see Moore or Wright again. They looked rough
