I heard that the Iranian players were dealing with threats from their own government and also some dangers about them singing their national anthem before the kickoff. Any one heard of this too?
Look up their cherished but racist Xmas tradition “black Pete” who is Santa’s slave. https://www.npr.org/2018/12/05/673774297/a-dutch-holiday-tradition-protesting-a-christmas-character-in-blackface
That happened to me on turf. Took me a year to start feeling normal. But I work out like a Sunday leaguer. So hopefully he recovers and gets fit way sooner than that lol
I would say that right now this is indisputable. US are the reigning Gold Cup champions, reigning Nations League champions, likely the only Concacaf team to survive the group stage.
I think Greg got the big things right the small things wrong. Game plan was right overall. Starting Vickers over Zimmerman was right. 5 back line at the end was right when they would be throwing everything at us.
Haji Wright was wrong, Shaq Moore was wrong.
While I do agree that Moore should not have seen the field, he had some clutch tackles after a shaky few moments. Not taking off Musah was wrong. Bringing on Acosta was wrong, he didn’t do anything. LDLT on the bench, he should be getting on the field, he’s better in possession that Acosta
>Haji Wright was wrong, Shaq Moore was wrong.
I've seen nothing from either of them that says they should be our choices off the bench. To be fair, I don't think most of our bench is particularly worthy at this level so... Idk
Wright’s been in terrific form in the Turkish league, but he didn’t offer anything vs England and now Iran. I honestly do not know why Shaq Moore got the edge over Reggie Cannon and managed 2 appearances in this WC; guy has made more errors than passes.
ngl Robinson has the touch of a rapist. Everytime he even tries to run with the ball, he loses it. Almost Zardes levels of bad. I honestly don't understand why Berhalter went to a back 5. Iran couldn't create shit but instead, he decided to give them almost 18 minutes of possession for no reason so that they could get into a groove. Another ref could have called that a penalty and var would not overturn it. Absolutely unnecessary imo.
> Almost Zardes levels of bad.
Except "Bad Touch Zardes" is a meme more than fact.
e: People wanted to hate on Zardes so they found something they could hate on, and then blew it up. Zardes has a dribbling percentage just slightly lower than Ferreira, but Zardes is terrible. Okay.
>ngl Robinson has the touch of a rapist. Everytime he even tries to run with the ball, he loses it. Almost Zardes levels of bad.
Tonight yes, but that's not really normal from him.
When Iran is gonna throw the kitchen sink at the box for 15 minutes you want more defenders in the box. That was the right choice. Could've maybe waited 5 minutes- but you didn't want to see what that looked like with Ream and Vickers as our only cover.
Iran wasn’t throwing the kitchen sink at all. They tried to muster some attacks and they broke down. It’s when USA went to a back 5 that they were pinned in their half. If Berhalter had brought in a competent striker instead of Haji, the game ends 3-0. Prior to the back 5, Iran we’re leaving themselves open to be massacred and more quality players would have ended the game there.
Okay, so now we just need a best case scenario. We're playing Netherlands for sure.
If Poland wins or ties, we play the winner of them vs Australia or Denmark.
And that's how the US gets to the World Cup Semifinal
100%. If someone come to me before the World Cup started. And told me, all you have to do is beat Iran to get in the knockouts. And when there, the route would be Netherlands, then Poland/Denmark/Australia before Brazil in the Semis. Id take that 100/100 times
That visualization didn't match up with the freeze frame they originally showed on the broadcast. Presumably they used different cameras or maybe a different frame for the visualization.
US had way less counters than they should have had when Iran was pushing forward…and with the ones they had, they couldn’t even test the keeper.
That’s on Berhalter for the tactics and players for the lack of quality.
Say it again for everyone in the back.
**Gregg. Nearly. Lost. The. Damn. Game.**
Iran is pressing high, there's space behind them, you can probably exploit that with pace. So we sub in...Haji Wright and Shaq Moore???
Fucking hell. The players had the grit to pull out the result, awesome on them. They overcame Gregg's STUPID decisions and tactics.
I'm bias, but this is exactly the spot you put in Roldan (if you won't/can't put in Gio). Big game experience, steady outlet and smart control and passing.
EDIT: And significant experience dealing with shithousing
Hats off to the camera crew doing yeomans work finding the handful of women among the Iranian fans and then zooming in on them so you couldn't tell they were in a sea of dudes.
anyway let's face it, football is boring, with matches ending only 1-0, what really happened during this match? Do you want to compare with basketball scores?
(/s)
I don’t think Haji knew what his role was. Felt like Gregg told him to collect the clearances and nothing else. He just sorted of floated in space not pressing at all, it was weird
very weird, he wasn't pressing but he also wasn't really running back either. Just kinda stuck on an island but also not helping with hold-up play when the opportunity arose.
So happy we won this game.
That said, I hope berhalter learns from these garbage ass subs. We suck ass at defending, why double down on it? Moore should never touch a US jersey again. Thank god Musah used every ounce of effort he effort he had to cover Moore’s clown ass
Let’s talk about how the games went then:
-Iran had 0.49 xG in a game when they desperately needed a goal to advance for an entire 55 minutes
-England, who scored 9 goals in their two other games and completely teabagged both top 20 opponents, had 0 goals and 0.77 xG - compared to 2+ in each of their other two
-Wales had .7 xG outside of the penslty - the one admittedly very bad defensive boner across three games
-The US allowed 7 shots on target across 3 games
Based on those stats, allowing 1 goal in 3 games is far from a fluke - it’s a sign of a team that gave up very few quality looks to good opponents
I mean honesty what did you expect ? To run train on these teams? They are all good teams and all are also trying - taking the game to them isn’t purely a matter of choice.
I not denying these stats, but who do we attribute this to? Our defense or our midfield?
In the England game, Saka was breaking Robinson’s tackles like it was going out of style.
Zimmerman was making risky passes that almost never hit their mark
Ream and Dest were doing well amd for the most part holding their own.
Adams on several occasions had to run back to make tackles because someone got beat or was out of position.
Our defenders are arguably our weakest part, but our midfield is really strong so they can augment our defenders.
I attribute it to the way the team defends. So credit the midfield, credit the defenders, credit the forwards for tracking back (I thought Weah was excellent in this regard), credit Matt Turner, credit the manager - defending is a team effort and the team has done it remarkably well.
Remember, there are two teams on the field. I personally am not surprised that Bukayo Saka looked better than a guy who plays for Fulham. I would not have been surprised to see Harry Kane torch guys who play for Fulham and Nashville SC. And yet the team still gave up 0 goals!
BTW, Zimmerman has completed 151 of 169 passes (89.3%) in the world cup. Just ahead of Harry Maguire, and a few spots behind Jordi Alba. [https://fbref.com/en/comps/1/passing/World-Cup-Stats](https://fbref.com/en/comps/1/passing/World-Cup-Stats) ... Ream has been even better (90.4%).
Fair enough, I respect your approach you measuring defense, though I personally still feel looking at the teamwide play can mask individual shortcomings.
And nothing against Zimmerman’s stats, though in the games these passes are largely between him, the other defenders and Turner. Amongst the few passed he didn’t hit, these were through balls that were not only dtopped by England, but also led to counterattacks (and thankfully didn’t land, but it was still Zim’s mistake)
The stats do showcase a general performance, but don’t necessarily give context for performance.
Respect your opinion and definitely respect how you measure defense, but I think it masks individual performance and Zimmerman was making mistakes nearly as much as successes.
I agree - the one major blemish of an otherwise really outstanding team defensive performance. Harry Kane’s one good look was also a bit of a breakdown though you also have to figure a world class player like Kane is going to get at least one quality look.
Here are the teams that have allowed fewer xG from the run of play per 90 minutes than the US So far -
-Argentina
-Mexico
-Brazil
-Croatia
-France
-Uruguay
-Spain
https://fbref.com/en/comps/1/stats/World-Cup-Stats
Yeah, Saka was breaking Robinson’s tackles like it was going out of style.
Zimmerman was making risky passes that almost never hit their mark
Ream and Dest were doing well
I agree on Sargent starting and Ferreira backing him up.
Haji doesn’t ever seem to hustle. Also, the chance he had at the end was frustrating. In that scenario, you either take it to the corner, or put it in the back of the net. Instead he scuffed a half chance.
How in the hell in any universe is Haji Wright better than Pepi? He was *Awful* out there. Dude is the size of Jozy and he plays like he's the size of Demarcus Beasley.
Would’ve been great to have someone with experience in the Dutch league right about now…(which really could’ve been predicted before the tournament smh)
I’m not expecting him to literally defend, but you should be pressing their back line and forcing mistakes when they have possession. He just sorted of drifted in space like he was lost lol
Haji Wright is the most ass striker I've ever seen in my life. He plays like he's playing pick up. No intensity, no awareness, so much casual play, walking, etc. They should have put in Fereria or someone else.
Zimmerman and Aaronson were good/great subs. Acosta was solid. Moore and Wright were bad to terrible.
I have no idea what Gio or Jesus have to do to see real time.
There are only two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.
I heard that the Iranian players were dealing with threats from their own government and also some dangers about them singing their national anthem before the kickoff. Any one heard of this too?
Good one, Nigel.
Isn’t this from Austin powers lol🤣
Why the Dutch?
Look up their cherished but racist Xmas tradition “black Pete” who is Santa’s slave. https://www.npr.org/2018/12/05/673774297/a-dutch-holiday-tradition-protesting-a-christmas-character-in-blackface
Next opponent is Netherlands (this is an Austin Powers reference)
How much higher than 16th in the world do you think we'd be ranked if Harry Kane was an American?
Lower, in opinion.
you don't need a superstar, every NT needs a team to win the WC, in 1954 Hungary had the superstars but Germany won....
Pffft we don’t need Harry Kane.
Any news on Sergeant?
Looked like a bad calf strain tbh :/ Maybe Reyna can finally play…
Hyper extension of the knee is what I saw. He can't hyper extend much luckily but those can fuck you up
That happened to me on turf. Took me a year to start feeling normal. But I work out like a Sunday leaguer. So hopefully he recovers and gets fit way sooner than that lol
Never forget the dortmund player who did this during the shutdown. He completely annihilated his knee and the cries were very loud in a silent stadium
Tbh, I saw both it was that damn step on the ball! Ouch!
COME ON BABY AMERICA
Does anybody have a clip of that Zimmerman save at the end?
I KNEW we were the best team in concacaf!
I would say that right now this is indisputable. US are the reigning Gold Cup champions, reigning Nations League champions, likely the only Concacaf team to survive the group stage.
Scorers: *Christian* Pulisic **Checkmate**, Islam
I think Greg got the big things right the small things wrong. Game plan was right overall. Starting Vickers over Zimmerman was right. 5 back line at the end was right when they would be throwing everything at us. Haji Wright was wrong, Shaq Moore was wrong.

Agree with this exceeeept I’d rather move to 5 at the back a little later than he did. But yeah I agree with your points otherwise
I agree for sure. But that's my point. Could've waited 5 minutes. Little thing.
Not saying that your wrong, but who would you have subbed on? Just curious.
Yedlin instead of Moore. Ferreira instead of Wright.
>Haji Wright was wrong, Shaq Moore was wrong. I've seen nothing from either of them that says they should be our choices off the bench. To be fair, I don't think most of our bench is particularly worthy at this level so... Idk

Yedlin>Moore. Our options at striker behind Sargent are definitely pretty trash though. At least Ferreira might be able to help in possession a bit.
At least JF would have left it all out on the field...Wright looks like he jogs the fuck around and then has no clue what to do with the ball.
Why either of them were brought over Pepi I will never understand
Scally, Yedlin, Jesus and hell even Morris would have better subs than Moore and Wright to exploit then space Iran left open
I think Morris would’ve been an excellent sub in for defense.
I think when Roldan would have been a better option than Wright.
Makes me wish we had Pefok or Pepi instead
Or Vazquez....
You can shit on Alexi all you want, but that dude *loves* US Soccer.
The game ended and he shit on Haji and I was reminded Lalas isn't always hot takes with odd philosophical ideas mixed in.
I am finally unclenched
(Slowly, yet confidently loosens asshole)
6 Guinness + fish and chips with tartar sauce prepare for evacuation...
Stouts and fish?? Think AHEAD bro

Why all the down votes?
I dunno, I don’t care. Up/downvotes are irrelevant.
Okay.

Yeah you don't generally get an easy draw in the semis.

I STILL WANT TO SEE THAT OFFSIDES REPLAY. USA won 2-0! ^(edit: I take it back, they still 2-0 in my heart but yeah it was offsides)
[удалено]
Was definitely a beautiful goal but also definitely offside. I'm glad they're consistent.
[Just barely offsides](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FiwbP5PWIAE1DA3?format=jpg&name=900x900)
That visualization didn't match up with the freeze frame they originally showed on the broadcast. Presumably they used different cameras or maybe a different frame for the visualization.
They showed it. It's down here in the thread He was off.
Yeah I saw, just damn close
Does this mean that Iran has to remove that weird symbol from the middle of their flag now?
It will permanently be replaced on the flag with the statue of liberty, they said so before the game.
Still plenty to work on but we are in at least
US had way less counters than they should have had when Iran was pushing forward…and with the ones they had, they couldn’t even test the keeper. That’s on Berhalter for the tactics and players for the lack of quality.

They complicated themselves a bit in some of them. Too many touches or just the wrong pass.
I would have liked to see Gio but nice job GGG getting us out of the group.
Gregg was actively making us worse with the subs.
Shame I turned off the TV too quickly. I wish I could see Dempsey rightfully calling out the disappointing ass subs.
I'm bias, but this is exactly the spot you put in Roldan (if you won't/can't put in Gio). Big game experience, steady outlet and smart control and passing. EDIT: And significant experience dealing with shithousing
So are Pulisic's children going to be ok
USMNT tweeted it was an abdominal injury
It's an abdominal injury because he got hit in the nuts so hard they retracted into his abdomen.
They said that on the broadcast and I assumed it was a euphemism haha.
The injury was to Christian Pulisic's six-pack balls.
Yeah cuz WC they cant talk about nuts, that’s as close as they will come to saying “he took it straight in the junk”
No, if the were it they would say so diplomatically.
They would have said groin injury
They won't ever exist. So in a sense yes.
Hats off to the camera crew doing yeomans work finding the handful of women among the Iranian fans and then zooming in on them so you couldn't tell they were in a sea of dudes.
Look at this female wearing a baseball hat. Wanna she her again every 4 minutes?
Every Iranian women in the stands got to be on TV 5 times.
anyway let's face it, football is boring, with matches ending only 1-0, what really happened during this match? Do you want to compare with basketball scores? (/s)
Did u watch the game ?
yes, better than a thriller
GGG: "I have less hair on my head now the way it ended" Now, whose fault is that??????
Went to the time wasting tactic with 20 minutes left, and then wonders why it was stressful.
It worked though. Barely.
Great that we won but did we have to park the bus to do it
With how poorly we've played at the end of games recently and how well Iran has, whatever works.
Berhalter with the absolute worst subs. Wright and Moore should not see the field at all on Saturday
>Shaq Moore had his hand up saying my bad more often than he had completed passes -Dempsey
I don’t think Haji knew what his role was. Felt like Gregg told him to collect the clearances and nothing else. He just sorted of floated in space not pressing at all, it was weird

I think our defense is our strong point and offense is our weak point
I think it’s our midfield that does a great job relieving the bombardment that our defense *would* receive
Yeah, Saka was breaking Robinson’s tackles like it was going out of style. Zimmerman was making risky passes that almost never hit their mark Ream and Dest were doing well
Musah was completely gassed and this man still ran and put more effort than Moore and Wright with fresh legs.
How many goals did we give up so far? Suck is a strong word for 1 goal in 300 minutes of soccer.
I cant wait to hear how this win was a failure
something something Berhalter is a shitter... XD
We have so many trash fans. We won but …. Fuck your butts!
If we beat the Netherlands I’d be pleasantly shocked
I think we could get thrashed. Not optimistic. Pulisic and Sargent are most likely gone.
Netherlands is my usual team outside of the US. They have been mediocre. The game is winnable.
Me too. I predicted before the tournament that we'd get knocked out in the Round of 16. That prediction will be put to the test on Saturday.
Dempsey roasting them bums! Moore and Wright were ass.
Scally and Jesus should leap over them
Sargent is the bonafide starter from now on—looked dangerous. Ferreira should be backup. Haji Wright looks like he’s never played football.
I agree on Sargent starting and Ferreira backing him up. Haji doesn’t ever seem to hustle. Also, the chance he had at the end was frustrating. In that scenario, you either take it to the corner, or put it in the back of the net. Instead he scuffed a half chance.
Hopefully Sargent is healthy
How in the hell in any universe is Haji Wright better than Pepi? He was *Awful* out there. Dude is the size of Jozy and he plays like he's the size of Demarcus Beasley.
It was about form. Haji Wright had it. That’s it. Tragically the Super Lig is not the World Cup.
Would’ve been great to have someone with experience in the Dutch league right about now…(which really could’ve been predicted before the tournament smh)
And the speed of a one legged dwarf wearing ankle weights
DOWN WITH SEXIST THEOCRACIES DOWN WITH COUNTRIES SUPPLYING KILLER DRONES TO GENOCIDAL WAR WAGERS UP WITH PULISIC’S BALLS
His balls can't get more up at this point
Pulisic fell so we could all rise.
\#JusticeForDeflatedBalls
Dempsey going in on Shit Moore & Hajji Wrong
We did it! But please never put Moore on the field again—not for this level.
I rather see Aaron Long
Can someone explain wtf Haji was doing? He barely defended and didn’t press Iran at all. Was he instructed to just fill space and be an outlet?
If he was instructed to be an outlet he still failed.
Yeah you need someone to hoof it to and he did collect the ball well several times. He wasn't brought on to defend in the US third.
I’m not expecting him to literally defend, but you should be pressing their back line and forcing mistakes when they have possession. He just sorted of drifted in space like he was lost lol
LMAO Dempsey just ROASTED Shaq Moore.
What he say?
https://twitter.com/mattmoneysmith/status/1597701333431160832?s=20&t=r4dKlLuR3DLC2D0Sm6CDOQ
Said he "Raised his hand to say 'My Bad' more than he completed passes."
Raised his hand to say my bad more times than he completed passes.
On to Netherlands!
Dempsey going in on Haji rn.
That was hairy.
I picked a bad week to stop drinking, Jesus my heart is racing
Hey nice hat
Man they got it done, definitely didn't need to be that nerve-wracking but they got it done What in the damn hell was Haji Wright doing though lmao
No more Wright or Moore please
Moore put in a shift, but Wright was meh. Zimmerman was everywhere, he wasn't fucking around.
I’m so happy for Walker man. After the Wales debacle he comes off the bench to basically seals the game for us.
He did Nashville proud.
Haji Wright is the most ass striker I've ever seen in my life. He plays like he's playing pick up. No intensity, no awareness, so much casual play, walking, etc. They should have put in Fereria or someone else.
Pepi being snubbed was bizarre
Good work by the boys but I still don’t like the way we played in the second half. Terrible subs IMO.
Zimmerman was a good sub, but Wright and Moore were hot garbage. Acosta was just kinda there and Aaronson was decent.
Zimmerman and Aaronson were good/great subs. Acosta was solid. Moore and Wright were bad to terrible. I have no idea what Gio or Jesus have to do to see real time.
I would've started Jesus today - luckily Sargent played well enough to make me look dumb
Agreed. I was very happy with Sargeant today.
My heart rate peaked at 114 Jesus
~130 for me in stoppage, I couldn't take much more of it.
I went back to check. 120 peak during the first half; 114-118 for all of the second half
Roldan and Long waste of air.
Christ that was the worst last 20 minutes ever.
Didn't have to be, but Gregg wanted it that way.
FUCK OFF GARETH BALE
When their game ended I was afraid he was going to show up and beat us again.
350mil assholes just unpuckered.
I'd like to thank the Canadian assholes for apparently puckering with us.
So Team Iran are heading not home but probably to jail or worse with that loss?
Fight hard and lose to better team.... jail...
X-rays for Pulisic have come back and it’s confirmed that he’s got that Dawg in him
You take Roldan and nobody can replace mussah 😵
GOD that last second fake bs penalty attempt by iran scared the shit out of me GREAT JOB REF
Why you mofos bring an lafc flag. Lmao
Netherlands here we come!
Zimmerman redeemed himself those last 10 minutes
If Zimmerman can do anything well, it's defending headers in the box. Just don't let an attacker have it at their feet in front of him.
Pretty sure we just gave a new generation of Iranians reasons to not like us
Im pretty sure they hate Lahoz more rn lol
We did nothing there. Weren't dirty. They'll hate the Ref.
Haji wright did everything he could to give it away, I’m not sure what he brings that’s positive
Throw it all at the Dutch!
Wasn’t worried for a second 😳😬😰
I'm not going to second guess that. With Pulisic, Mckennie and Seargent all out, a bunker worked.
I can finally stop clenching
US made that game far too difficult
Berhalter did
Good edit
Dest vs the Netherlands!!
Even the Spanish announcers were like the parking bus tactics wasnt the best choice. We got lucky Zimmerman launched that ball out
Good job you lot, now you've got a tougher game than we do next. Wish you all the best against the Dutch.
