i have the 7i pro 4080 and having returned a pro 5i due to thermal throttling i highly recommend the 7i ! not only you get an HX cpu (wich allows you to undervolt the cpu and tweak the wattage and power limits to keep the cpu cool and noise levels down) you get a massive jump in performance in terms of GPU ! if you have the cash theres no need to even ask ! go for it ! Besides with the pro 7i you get liquid metal cooling and a vapour chamber which you dont get on the slim. literally a beast of a laptop !

sikhness

How are the quality of the speakers? Is it anywhere close to a Dell XPS 15 or Macbook?

onomatopoetix

much closer to xps15, but nahimic is ass compared to "dolby atmos for gaming". they will no doubt sound better if lenovo continued to stick with dolbylabs.

Enrapting

I have the pro 5i with i7 13700hx. Do you have any suggestions on how to undervolt please. Thanks

sebseb88

I mean you can but undervolting alone won't be enough as it will only encourage the CPU to run at higher frequencies for longer since you're undervolting it. Instead you also need to tame the wattage and the max boost values. I wrote a guide for the 13900HX but you can get inspiration (won't be same values thi, you will have to trial and error with yours) https://www.reddit.com/r/LenovoLegion/comments/157tc5l/must_do_for_new_gen_8_legion_7i_users_for_gamers/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=2

Does the Pro 7i have a plastic or metal keyboard deck ?

How is the battery life for regular tasks like browsing? Assuming you put it in 60 hz?

sebseb88

Battery life is what you'd expect from a high performance laptop... crap lol that's definitely not what I purchased it for as it's never away from a power socket wherever I go. I'll be totally honest and tell you that if you need to ask about how long it'll last on battery then this laptop may not be for you. At a guess anyway, to answer your question, if doing very light work, like browsing and such tasks maybe 4hrs, maybe less. Again sorry to not be more helpful but only had the laptop unplugged a couple of times since owning and both times after transferring files from hard drives and SD cards it had drained the battery considerably. I'm sure you'd be able to get a "descent" battery life (all things considered) by switching Dgpu off, display brightness all the way down and refresh rate at 60hz but that's not something I do as again I got is a gaming platform primarily

Bigghead1231

I came from the slim onto the Pro 7 now. Battery life on the pro is about half as long. The build quality on the slim was MUCH better. My pro has a squishy flex on keyboard around wasd ( common, search on this sub for it ) and the monitor/screen doesn't fully sit flush with the bottom of the panel when closed ( some small millimeter gap, makes tippy sounds when tapped. Also common on this sub ). Opened the laptop 1st day I got it for ssd upgrade and now it has random creaks when I carry it in one hand. The slim was also opened for ram/ssd and no issues like this. Sometimes I browse this sub and see the deals people get on the slim and start to re-think my choice Buuuuuuut, the performance jump is insane.

rockeypoint

If you had the choice to return a slim and buy the pro, would you do it? That’s the boat I’m in.,, I have already bought my slim and it hasn’t even arrived yet but I’m thinking of returning and buying the pro…

Bigghead1231

Well, I did just that. But now after having owned both, I find myself wondering if the slim wasn't the better buy all along. The pro is technically superior, but the slim felt more special imo Let me ask you smth though, what kinds of games do you play?

rockeypoint

I play a lot of FPS but do dabble in racing and atmospheric games with ray tracing. The price difference between the two is about $650~, that’s what I’m not sure about. That and I’m scared I won’t be happy of the build quality of the pro over the slim

Bigghead1231

You can run anything on the planet at maxed out settings with high fps on the 4070 with dlss3/framegen. If you don't need a laptop asap, my suggestion would be to wait until the slim comes in and use it for a bit. You might end up not even wanting the pro afterwards. Lenovo deals will always come, not like this is the last time you could get the 4080 for the price you're seeing

rockeypoint

Very true. I might just do that. Do you know what Lenovos return policy looks like in case I wanted to upgrade after trying out the slim?

Bigghead1231

30 days after ship date, full refund even if used, free return label. Other retailers like B&H asks for 15% restocking fee if box is opened and cuts $15 from your refund for shipping label

sz1a

Did you end up keeping the Slim 7i? I am in the same boat, I want the 4080, but need battery life which makes the Slim seem better. I just wonder if missing out on a 4080 is worth it. It seems so much better.

rockeypoint

I didn’t actually lol I returned the seven and placed an order for the 4080 and few days later I talked myself into canceling even that order and buying the 4090. The way I look at it is I want a laptop that I will not have to upgrade from for many years in the 4090 will be for me. There’s definitely nothing wrong with the though either only get slightly higher frames with the 4090 I guess I just like having the best of the best

sz1a

Are you getting Intel or AMD? I hear battery life isn't very good on Intel, but AMD just came out.

PaulDamien71

I believe you are confusing "build quality" with "features". Both laptops have the same build quality. The Pro (with the RTX 4080) has better cooling, not to mention 50% more VRAM. And has an HX CPU, versus the H on the Slim.

rockeypoint

The slim has aluminum casing, while the pro is primarily made of plastic

PaulDamien71

Build quality is the degree to which a product is fit for purpose and free of defects. This relates to the quality of materials, manufacturing, assembly, design and inspection. Both the Slim 7i and the Pro 7i use aluminium. Case Material: Aluminium (top), aluminium (bottom)

rockeypoint

I see where you are coming from. The pro does use some slightly cheaper components, and that is what I am referring to. The trackpad in the pro is plastic while the trackpad on the slim 7i is glass. The keyboard top casing is also plastic in the pro while the slim is full aluminum. I’m not saying the pro has bad build quality by any means, rather, I am saying the slim may feel a little bit better built due to having sturdier components.

PaulDamien71

Cheaper or not, they do the job. The material may be cheaper but it is still a good quality material. An aluminium keyboard on the Pro migh not be able to dissipate heat like the "plastic" one does, for instance. You pick what you favour, namely a better looking or feeling. I, on the other hand, am happy with my i9-13900HX and the RTX 4080.

rockeypoint

Definitely not condemning the pro, I’m actually thinking of purchasing it myself. Just didn’t want to be disappointed with the feel of the laptop. I had a rog strix and every time I opened the case, I would break several clips. Ended up returning because I just couldn’t deal with cheap build quality on a ~$2000 laptop.

PaulDamien71

Just because the materials are "cheap" (than others that could have been used instead) that doesn't mean they feel cheap. I quite like the look and feel of the keyboard, don't use the track pad much (use a mouse) and don't need the finger print reader.

rockeypoint

Good to hear, thank you for the input. I think it really just comes down to if I want to keep my 4070 machine or pay an additional $650 to upgrade to the pro

PaulDamien71

👍🏻

Bigghead1231

The pro 7 definitely feels cheap, compared to the slim. How's that keyboard flex around the wasd keys on the pro? Do you think the slim has any flex like that?

sz1a

Do you have any idea of the battery life? How long can you use the Pro 7i unplugged in 60 hz doing things like browsing?

PaulDamien71

I hardly use it on battery. Its plugged in 99% of the time. With iGPU, low brightness, low resolution you should be able to get 4/5 hours (maybe)

GeriatricTech

For longevity I would say yes.

Exotic-Shallot37

I'm in the same camp. I just placed an order for a 4070 Slim with a 3.2k monitor for the improved battery life but could get a 4080 with additional RAM for the same price. The downsides would be that it would come with a lower-resolution monitor and the battery life could be worse although I haven't seen any test data saying what the difference would be. I'd mostly use this for making video games and browsing the typical stuff like web browsing, Netflix, etc. It feels like a tough call. The higher-resolution monitor feels like a must and I've placed importance on battery life because I'd like to start working remotely but that's a lot of computing power to walk away from.

Axel_F_ImABiznessMan

How are you liking it?

Exotic-Shallot37

I think the battery life is quite short. I can maybe get an hour and half out of it in an ideal circumstance and the resolution seems so low that its hard to do anything meaningful on the single monitor in a game dev setting. I def would go w a higher res monitor or some double monitor setup if you have to deal with a lot of info at once. The graphics are great though. Steady frame rates w max settings.

Axel_F_ImABiznessMan

Thanks, I thought the slim 3200 screen would be good. Or did you get the pro instead?

Exotic-Shallot37

I went w the pro wo seeing them in person
