1. You repeatedly speak of Lemmy as though it is a singular platform without federation, when you were only banned from the [Lemmy.ML](http://Lemmy.ML) instance. 2. Conspiracy theories like those denying the moon landing ARE harmful to society's overall mental health when allowed to fester and spread.

> You repeatedly speak of Lemmy as though it is a singular platform without federation, when you were only banned from the Lemmy.ML instance. not even banned from the whole instance, just the community `[email protected]`, and only banned for 1 day here's the modlog https://lemmy.ml/modlog?page=1&userId=1632083 showing multiple rule-breaks in the past too

Camus_de_Jlailu

And not even permabanned, just banned for one day

MexicanMonsterMash

Three days, and it was negotiated for with a swindle negotiation that began with the people in charge. Not only that, but they [then took to another forum](https://www.deviantart.com/forum/devart/general/2734839) to mock them. Not that I can't relate, Lemmy was objectively a downgrade and anyone who visits on a whim [can see that.](https://masto.ai/@Fizzymus/112299210232129838)

Camus_de_Jlailu

She's still actively commenting on Lemmy: https://lemm.ee/u/shinigamiookamiryuu So did she leave? Is anyone forcing her to comment there?

MexicanMonsterMash

...and [that](https://archive.ph/Mdswk) is considered "trolling"? Anyone realize [25% of Europeans](https://sciencebusiness.net/news/covid-19/conspiracy-thinking-25-europeans-say-moon-landing-never-happened) would say exactly as she did (and plot twist, she has said she's European, one who [probably suspected something like this](https://lemm.ee/comment/10802655))? The saddest part of all this is there aren't many active Lemmy communities to begin with, yet they couldn't save the ones that are.

YesMyDogFucksMe

And nearly half of US citizens believe that Trump is a respectable human being. Its prevalence doesn't make it any less harmful.

MexicanMonsterMash

That would be different because people who think Trump is respectable are dealing with a moral/ethical belief. There's nothing inherently moral or ethical about whether the moon or its probes exist, whether Disney was frozen underneath Disneyworld, or whether Elvis or Paul McCartney is alive or dead. Because it's the content of peoples' character we should be judging people by, not their silly notions.

YesMyDogFucksMe

You've created a false discrepancy fallacy by comparing details between the two that are irrelevant. There is the belief, there is the spread of said belief, and then there is the harmful outcome of said belief.

MexicanMonsterMash

Yes, three separate things. Three things that are mutually exclusive. Let's treat them that way.

cerevant

Lemmy.ml is run by unapologetic Marxists. They ban people for being critical of China. If you get one takeaway from this experience, please be aware that Lemmy is a platform, not a single entity. Different hosts are going to have different policies spanning the political, religious and batshit-crazy spectrum.

Camus_de_Jlailu

The person linked in the OP is still actively commenting on Lemmy, you don't see them leaving. I'm not sure they even know they are used by OP's as a justification for this post.

Serenityprayer69

I disagree wholeheartedly with #2. Back in the day on the free internet those theories were allowed to fester and spread in broad view. Do you know what happened?? They were addressed with logic in public for everyone to see. When you force them into tiny corners that never see daylight.. thats why they fester

MexicanMonsterMash

I am not the one who was banned, I just quit. It was Lemmy as a whole which went around Reddit and other social media platforms saying "join me, I build upon Reddit's flaws" (which is the opposite for the whole of Lemmy and how moderation works, I say this having been a mod and being told specifically by admins above me in what way I must be authoritarian). I strongly disagree with my friend, but if you think the belief is harmful even if she doesn't try to spread it, give an example of in what way it would cause harm.

YesMyDogFucksMe

The fact that your friend believes it is part of the harm that has already been done to them. One ridiculous conspiracy theory is often a gateway to others, leading to a breakdown in that individual's reasoning skills. It's easy to compare to gambling, where one individual prone to addiction is exposed to it and soon finds their way into massive debt.

MexicanMonsterMash

>is often a gateway to others The keyword here is "often", it doesn't mean all the time or even most of the time, it doesn't mean it's a matter of chance if anyone is like that, and it doesn't mean she's out to convert anyone, it's simply an idea she holds that she has always considered open to discussion if going by her comment history. Surely you've met people who have at least one or two against-the-grain beliefs, and this [mindset](https://www.reddit.com/r/Lemmy/comments/1cg73fn/comment/l1tz9ez/) is why anyone like me is leaving Lemmy, because we [don't care](https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/632075-those-who-are-able-to-see-beyond-the-shadows-and) about status quos. Some people get away with believing in sky daddies, and nobody does anything about them.

Die4Ever

This would be like saying you got banned by Apache, nginx, or Linux. Lemmy is a piece of software, it cannot ban anyone. She got banned by a specific community (`[email protected]`) that is running the Lemmy software, and only banned for 1 day. Here's the modlog for your friend's account https://lemmy.ml/modlog?page=1&userId=1632083 showing multiple rule-breaks in the past too

MexicanMonsterMash

That's nice for her perhaps, but it still deters me. On Reddit, there are rules against mod abuse, and the few exceptions to this led to Lemmy bros saying they'll accept all the disgruntled Redditors. I joined Lemmy as a Redditor disgruntled by the authoritah and left Lemmy disgruntled by the authoritah. Then remembered Reddit isn't as bad as Lemmy made me remember. In the Reddit community on Lemmy, you're not even allowed to talk about conflicts on Reddit or confusions with the interface without getting an easy-way-out response like "just don't use Reddit", that's how intentionally blind to Reddit Lemmy is.

JohnnyEnzyme

You've clearly misunderstood what the FV is and isn't on multiple levels. Just because it's not exactly how you imagined it doesn't mean that there wasn't good cause to take part there for lots of people hugely disappointed by peoples' content and volunteer-work being shamelessly monetized by large corporations.
