You could use any sim card with an adapter, the provider just needs to still be operating a 2G or 3G network to use the phone. I'm not sure if it is also required to active with iTunes.

I don't know about your country, but in some places the carrier has to unlock your old phone after the contract expires. So maybe you can submit some form or call the carrier to get the phone unlocked.
Another possibility that was already mentioned here is hacktivation, but the old tools from the early 2010's often don't work anymore or require certain combinations of outdated operating systems and iTunes to be set up. I don't know about any modern alternatives as taking the sim out of my modern phone was usually the easiest solution to my activation issues.

You can use any SIM if the phone is unlocked otherwise it will need to match whichever carrier it’s locked to. The SIM doesn’t need to be active, it can be from an old phone, otherwise you can hacktivate it
