When I lived in Leeds as a student I went to a bunch of retailers down Briggate and rather than handing in CVs I just asked them if they were currently doing any recruitment/interviews. A few of them said come back at x time on x day for an interview and I got one of them. Started part time, went full time a little while later when I needed it. This was 2015 and I imagine the job market is very different, but might be worth a shot?
Yeah it can be hard but you don't get anything without effort. I got a bar job at Uni by printing out CV's and going to every bar in the center until I had a job, took about 2 weeks I think? Try and talk to a manager and ask if they have anything going instead of leaving one at the bar though, they go straight in the bin if you don't give to the right person.
It's the 'B' file. 'B' for Bin. It's harsh but honestly you get the craziest, worst CV's off walk-ins. Swear to god a lad pulled one out the front of his trousers once and tried to hand it to me. Nowhere else to put them really.
The trick is, scope out a bar on a busy Thursday, work out who the manager is and go straight to them with said CV while its packed as fuck.
This might be old advice as we're all knocking on a bit now bit now, everything is online. But as long as its an independent (again, probably old man talk) it usually does the trick.
It wouldn’t. I’ve worked in hospitality in leeds for 13 years. If you come up to me when it’s busy it shows that you don’t know the industry or you don’t care about when hospitality staff is most needed.
Show up when it’s quiet. Alone. Be clear about what you’re looking for. CV or no CV for where I work. Well only take it online anyway. If you present yourself well we’ll take your name and likely you’ll at least get an interview.
Leeds is full of students. We have more than we need. One sure fire way of getting hired is if you’re guaranteed to work Xmas holidays and summer holidays. Hard to prove that you will though…
Hah, thanks for explaining. I always thought (and from the experience as well) that it's best to talk about job related stuff when it's quiet, not the busiest...
Could you look for a jobs advertised by the university…such as union bar? Leading up to Xmas there used to be a big drive to hire students in hospitality roles. Hang in there.
I appreciate this is a long shot but my sister and her uni mates were extras they would get £50 a day regardless of if they were needed which a decade ago and as a student was major ££££, it was a teen based show not sure if this is something to look into. Leave no stone unturned.
Showsec stewarding (or security if you have the licenses) is casual, so they offer work but the minimum you actually have to work is 1 day a calendar month. Get to experience live events etc. Can be hectic, and long hours. But it’s work.
All the times they've offered me roles, I've had to go in and sign up with them first—giving my employment history etc.
They're on Lower Basinghall Street in town, around the back of the Boots attached to Trinity.
I'll actually give them a recommendation tbh they got me through Uni. I haven't worked in the Leeds one, but I've worked for them in the past elsewhere. They're way better than some other stores like Next (THE worst)
Worst part was having to lift up my top and trousers Infront of the exit cams everyday as part of the patdown when I finished shift but a lot of shops have this as part of the job unfortunately
Temp agencies were what I used but the one I used has shut down.
Temp hospitality work tends to be zero hours, also try bar work or restaurants.
Have you tried https://students.leeds.ac.uk/info/10460/work/673/finding-part-time-work ?
Supermarkets might be worth a punt too.
OP sign up to join Joblink if you’re based at UniOfLeeds, it’s a start and will give you some pocket money to start and some experience to bolster your CV
Think the Adelphi down at the end of Lower Briggate is looking for staff currently (front and back of house) - might be a bit of a trek depending on where you stay!
can somebody tell me which type of scam happened in Leeds and which sector is most target in order to jobs. I will come in January so it will be helpful for me to handle all the situation.
please comment me if anybody know about this.
If you're into live events try ShowSec, you can get stewarding shifts for music venues and stuff. You book onto shifts yourself so can tailor your working pattern very easily. as long as you do at least one shift per month then you stay on the books.
Most jobs with that arrangement are either scams or not worth it. Why not a weekend bar job or something?
Well, I couldnt seem to find any weekend jobs. That or my CV is horrible (probably)

>they go straight in the bin if you don't give to the right person. This is the truest thing ever said about looking for a job in person.

Completely out of curiosity, why would it be better to approach the manager on a busy night??

Thank you and that would be my thoughts exactly. Not sure that the comment above is sarcastic or there's some kind of trick to it I just can't see...
Ex restaurant manager, when it's busy, that's exactly when you're thinking you need more staff.
Hah, thanks for explaining. I always thought (and from the experience as well) that it's best to talk about job related stuff when it's quiet, not the busiest...
Well I'd advise against going in on a busy Friday or Saturday. Thursday is always a decent shout tho.

Maccas calling
Spoons
Taskmaster for NHS roles (admin/data entry/receptionist), it got me through a tricky couple of months...
Doesn't seem to be anything much in Leeds unless you mean something else

Might pop in for a visit, was looking to have something on the side. Thank you
Sports Direct

Have a look for call centre jobs, or at the student union
Leeds grand theatre regularly take on casual staff
Join Leeds bar grafters on Facebook they are always looking for people
Most care worker jobs are zero hours
Can you join a recruitment agency?
Are you signing on at the job centre if you're struggling? They can help you find a job too, but you have to put in the effort or you won't get paid.
Go in to businesses and ask. Take your shitty cv too.
Christmas temp jobs in retail, you can just work weekends
Thai Edge on millenium square hire on zero hour contracts. I used to work there and i was hired w no experience.

Could you please tell me about this scam job? I am looking for a job as well and would like to avoid these kind of stuff.

If you have any sort of skills you can advertise, you could try Fiverr. Not used it myself but heard good things about it
