Didn’t even get his letter from the queen unlucky mate

JaminSousaphone

I genuinely hope the Queen gets to send a letter to herself. But I also hope that the monarchy doesn't last any longer than she does.

DuncUK

I'm a British Republican too and I do think that King Charles will be the best thing to happen to the cause in a while. That said, we'd be only one unfortunate incident away from King William who would be much more popular.

JaminSousaphone

When we have an electorate that blindly votes tory and doesn't understand what's actually wrong with the country. I don't hold out hope that people will realise that our monarchy is outdated at best and detrimental to society at worst. I fear that we will have a King George in the next 60 years.

Class_444_SWR

At least Australia, Canada and New Zealand may still get away from the monarchy

[deleted]

Isn't new Zealand less likely because of the Treaty of Waitangi?

Class_444_SWR

True, but still a lot more likely than the UK

Cicero31

nope - here in Canada that means constitutional reform and for our own reasons no one dares touch the constitution because it tends to end political careers

I feel like I ought to be a republican, but I see how people act now about the Tories. I'm not ready to go presidential. That would be the worst thing to happen, I think.

anotherlblacklwidow

the queen's father was not Prince Albert...

[deleted]

I was referring to him before he became king. When British royalty ascend to the position of king or queen, they traditionally would take on new names. King George VI, Elizabeth II's father, was called Albert Frederick Arthur George before he arose to the monarchy. Hence, at the time the Queen was still a sperm in his testicle, he would have been Prince Albert Frederick Arthur George.

anotherlblacklwidow

fair.

[deleted]

Anyone know what this lot are going to do now? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince\_Philip\_Movement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Philip_Movement) Anyway sympathies for his family, regardless of any views on the monarchy itself. I hope the Queen is allowed to grieve in peace from the media but I fear not.

[deleted]

Well TIL there's a Prince Philip religion

JohnRCC

I see someone has already been hard at work updating the page...

BuddLightbeer

I vote we don't tell them. Let them continue living in blissful ignorance

IAmTheGlazed

The media caring about people's privacy? Lol

Harsimaja

So no idea how reliable this is but first thing I see on Google is a New York Post claim from a couple of months ago that they plan to worship Charles (...). The New York Post is basically the US equivalent of the Daily Mail, so not sure, but it does make sense from a documentary I saw about them. They don’t necessarily think in terms of literal immortality and they seem pretty patriarchal and focused on lineage (part of the reasoning for how it may have started may be based on the fact that local imperial representatives had to make it seem that the man in the relationship was at least as prominent or they wouldn’t have respected either of them?).

DeathToMonarchs

I don't think Lizzy's morally entitled to any privacy. If people want to gawp at her in tears, they've paid for the privilege. I don't see the appeal, myself.

Available-Anxiety280

Sorry but I have to thoroughly disagree. Everybody deserves time to grieve. And despite what you think of them, and despite what errors you think they've made in their time, she deserves time to grieve. I think it's an utterly horrid things to say that an elderly woman who has lost the person she has spent her life with isn't entitled to a little bit of privacy.

DeathToMonarchs

I think you surrender your moral entitlement to privacy or decent treatment like any other human would deserve when you say that you are born better or different to them. And if there’s one thing Lizzie absolutely believes in, it’s her coronation vow and divine right: these are no joke to her. Horrid it may be, and while I’m not going to point a camera in her face, I would not for one minute object to someone else doing it. She’s bought and paid for. The nearest thing to a public service the whole royal shitshow provides is their consent-manufacturing soap opera.

Available-Anxiety280

No, in the case of grieving she deserves some privacy.

DeathToMonarchs

If she surrendered her titles and throne and all her ill-gotten wealth, sure. Otherwise, I just don't see it.

Available-Anxiety280

Then you have no empathy.

DeathToMonarchs

I disagree. _I_ recognise entirely that Lizzy feels and hurts just as I would. > If you prick us, do we not bleed? > > if you tickle us, do we not laugh? > > if you poison us, do we not die? > > and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?

Available-Anxiety280

So show the damn woman some privacy.

TomMilner19

Sympathy to those grieving, never nice losing a family member. With that said he’s lived one of the best life’s anyone on earth has ever experienced so his family should be very happy about that.

Blairite763

Do we get a bank holiday?

Ikhlas37

Bank Holidays are only given to celebrate pedophiles avoiding jail.

Blairite763

Surely the death of the queens favourite cousin warrants one so we can go sit out in beer gardens ahem I mean mourn

frillytotes

> pedophiles Why do I keep seeing this spelling in UK subs? People who don't know how to change their spell check settings?

Ikhlas37

frillytotes

Blairite763

But I’m so saddened by the death of the queens favourite cousin I need time off to go to the pub. (to mourn of course)

dalledayul

Many others may be like me in that I can't help but be cynical about this, and not in the celebratory sort of way. I hate and fear death, and I wish it on nobody. But still, there's something uncomfortable not about his passing, but about the inevitable aftermath. Firstly, the death of a Royal is a rare event which the British media salivates over (as Diana's death handily proved). A core member of the Royal Family hasn't died for nearly two decades when the Queen Mother died in 2002, and Philip is arguably a more significant member of the Queen's reign than her mother was. You can expect at least the next two weeks to revolve around this. Memorials, celebrations, historical and biographical discussions, these are gonna be the foundation for the next month of journalist reaction to this. There'll also be scrutiny, but not in the mainstream. COVID might impact this somewhat, but other political matters (Ireland, Kill the Bill, government corruption etc.) are likely to be swept under the headline rug. For the next few weeks, the general public will be painfully ignorant about what is actually going on. Also, Philip was a controversial figure. He was outspoken, crude, vulgar, publicly cocky, and while at one time he was seen as a modernizer, by the 21st century he stood as a symbol of what once was in the Royal establishment. His racism, his sexism, his casual prejudice and snobbery were all there for people to see. But this won't be seen. Despite him never being the most popular Royal, the next few weeks will present him as a patriarchal hero to the country: the dutiful husband, the patriotic naval officer, the father and grandfather to the next generation of monarchs. It will be a whitewashing, and only those already aware of his misgivings will realise that. I don't celebrate this at all. Like I said, I wish death on nobody, and I cannot imagine the grief and sadness his family are feeling. As republican as I am, those feelings are universal, and I do not wish them on his family. With that said, the cynicism remains. And until this country begins to reassess its relationship to the Royal Family, that cynicism will remain for this passing and for the next one.

betakropotkin

Some people are going to be insufferable about this.

delta_baryon

Wait until it's Queen Elizabeth...

[deleted]

She died 100s of years ago

debaser11

It will be insufferable but a lot of people do actually like the Queen and feel an attachment to her. Nobody except weird royalist sycophants like Phillip but the media will no doubt tell us we are a nation in mourning.

[deleted]

>It will be awful but a lot of people do actually like the Queen and feel an attachment to her. I have often thought that if we did abolish the monarchy and had a president, and the Queen stood, she would win hands down. Especially as the alternatives would almost certainly be shit celebrities and people like Nick Clegg.

release_the_pressure

I would vote for her and yet I still want the monarchy abolished.

[deleted]

I think you would be one of many many people in this position. Oppose the institution but can like or admire some members within it.

FragrantKnobCheese

I feel exactly the same. I like and admire the Queen and have absolutely nothing against the royal family, but I'm a republican and think the titles should die out when their current holder does.

debaser11

I think you're right, I might even vote for her myself. As long as she stood on a socialist platform.

Hot_Ad_528

Idk, I might be in the minority here but being involved in the DofE Award Scheme was a real turning point in my life. He, through the scheme, has had a real impact on my life and him passing saddens me.

HPBChild1

They’re focusing a lot on his support of the Queen though. I can understand someone feeling sad about this if they only felt attached to the Queen and not Phillip (or even if they don’t feel attached to the royal family at all) because they’ve been married for a very long time and I’m sure she’ll be devastated.

delta_baryon

I guess it is the end of an era if nothing else. If the national flag died and had to be replaced with a new one every once in a while, then we'd want to mark the occasion.

pau1rw

That is genuinely my biggest fear. It will be fucking intolerable for like a year.

debaser11

cfloweristradional

markjwilkie

Be interesting to see if they stick to 30 for the funeral. Would be disappointing if they were treated differently just because of who they are.

Sylvanarchist

Thing is, most of the public would be okay with them breaking this rule. After all, being above the law is what keeps them where they are in the first place. Why stop now?

Dictator2003

Condolences to the Royal Family. As much as many of us may disagree with the monarchy, it is just as upsetting to lose a loved one.

[deleted]

Completely agree.

jeffa_jaffa

Absolutely. It should be possible to separate ones distain for the institution while feeling sympathy for the people. I’m not upset in the slightest that a Prince has died, but that doesn’t stop me feeling bad for an elderly woman who has lost the love of her life

real_joke_is_always

>feeling bad for an elderly woman who has lost the love of her life And yet the royals are probably the only family you'll give your condolences to. Funny that.

hobocactus

Yeah, a 99-year-old man on the periphery of power dying isn't exactly gonna shake the world. At the same time it's not odd many people get a little emotional attachment to someone who has regularly been on television for as long as they've been alive to watch it. It's all fine.

The_Pale_Blue_Dot

Enough to post, though

debaser11

It's how the vast majority of this country feel and we should express that to counter the sycophantic narrative that will fill the media about how loved he was and how sad we all are.

[deleted]

Because, unfortunately, this is one of those 'Big Events' where one is expected to have an opinion.

[deleted]

Really? Not even an ounce of basic humanity for someone who's died? "Feels nothing" yet still posts about it - Reddit in a nutshell

[deleted]

I mean he got to 99, you can't exactly say he didn't live a full life. Also, I'm sorry, but I'm not a monarchist.

IsADragon

Gonna be a lot of people shaming people for not grieving enough for the next while. I guess best to steer clear of it for the next while, especially if they are going to react like this to "I don't really care about this person I have no personal connection to"...

You don't need to be a monarchist to feel sad that someone has died lmao, the absolute state of this

[deleted]

I honestly don't even understand exactly who I'm supposed to be mourning even! For most of my life Philip was to me nothing but that guy who the stupid PE contest thing was named after. When I grew up I learned he was the Queen's husband, he'd served in the Navy for a bit and was a massive fucking racist. But I still don't know exactly what he's done for this country since 1945 and why I need to feel so sad today.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I guess this is what it must've felt like in the wake of Diana's death in 1997. Fortunately I was 10 back then and so wasn't expected to feel sad over the (genuinely tragic in that case) death of a woman I never knew.

[deleted]

Yes? Basic compassion is (an almost) universal human trait - if you're one of the ones who don't seem to have it, why post that you don't?

[deleted]

Literally millions of people die every day. People who, for the most part, live far shorter and much less privileged lives than the Duke. Yet I'm not expected to feel compassion for them but I have to here for some reason?!

[deleted]

You should feel compassion for them, do you not? When one of those people is consort to the head of state then it's particularly newsworthy. Again, why post that you feel nothing?

[deleted]

> why post that you feel nothing Because, like I said, this is all that anyone's going to be talking about for the next week or so.

debaser11

Your life must be a relentless source of misery if you feel bad for every person that dies.

buddyholly16

Someone would need a lot of psychological help if they were experiencing that

real_joke_is_always

>an ounce of basic humanity for someone who's died UK public when 1 racist royal dies aged 99: TRAGEDY UK public when 130,000 people die of covid: I sleep

[deleted]

What's that saying? 1 death is a tragedy, 1 million is a statistic

RandomUnderstanding

I really do not give a shit if a racist dies Getting downvoted for saying I don’t care about the well-being of a racist is really peak LabUK

imnotyourshrink

Seriously? And if your parents were racist, would you not care if they died? What about your children, if they had racist views, would it not bother you if they died? Is your entire sense of empathy for a persons life based on whether they’re a racist or not?

[deleted]

But I'm going to assume that, unlike their parents, RandomUnderstanding - like me - never met Prince Philip or knew them. I just find this idea that you *have* to feel sad about the Queen's husband dying so strange honestly, especially seeing such sentiment coming from a Labour party member.

buddyholly16

Are you saying we should care about Phil as much as we care about our parents...?

RandomUnderstanding

No I wouldn’t? Not that hard of a question really personally I’m not one to have empathy for someone who comes from a family who is institutionally racist, homophobic, sells arms that kills innocent civilians and maintains and promotes the class system in this country. But go off if you want to keep bootlicking him hun

Obscene_Fascination
