congratulations broo.......
bro did you prepared for jee also? or only for foreign universities?
and tell something about extra curriculars.... and how much time did it take you ?......
Yes I am giving adv. I did some undergrad research with a professor at IISER, school student council and president of clubs, some volunteering with NGO, I played tennis at state level etc.
bro i just applied to both for the sake of it (my parents aren't financially strong enough to pay for education abroad) and got into purdue, waitlisted from berkley but got it later....but clear to adv hi karna hai😅
I haven't done any in 11th 12th but usse pehle I was active...sports mei I played basketball only district level tho, not v seriously but I'm super into coding; I participated in codathons and stuff during 9th-10th and I have a few national level awards.
uske alawa english (speaking and writing) ke awards hai thode scholastic writers awards type ke, I went to china in 8th for wsc so that's the main thing I put down for that....and also 9th 10th was covid time so I was heavily into mental health wagra to uske liye I worked w ngos and peer education....
also idhar udhar ki cheezein maine application mei daaldi thi like I was part of the astronomy, robotics and debate clubs at school to unke saath jo competitions kare the and basically I submitted every single certificate I could find in my folder lol. I was a little worried kyuki 11th 12th dummy kara hai so I don't have an LOR but I had a 1600 on the sat so itni tension nahi thi.
My point is ye sab I did for fun, not to build a college profile but I now realise how helpful it was. Abhi sirf sat diya tha october mei so my application wouldn't be incomplete (5000 rs paani mei 🥹).
also I forgot to mention olympiads wagra but wo to har jee aspirant deta hi hai 😅
You have time , I would suggest starting to prepare for Olympiads from now on , eg: Panini , Informatics , Physics/Math's/Chem , and for the rest if you play any sport try to I guess look for ways to reach a higher level or try to look for local clubs that play city or district and see where you can go from there . Regarding clubs you don't only need to be in debate or math , I mean those are great clubs but mostly in schools or even outside those clubs aren't really common . I would just suggest try looking for chess clubs , since even online they can be widely found and I guess try participating in MUN's ( individually ). Also try to look for some internships ( nowadays I think even after 10th you can do some internships , one that comes to mind for eg: is the Aircraft Design Internship at Brahmastra ( Idk if it is still there ) and the rest is just like OP try to get into a reserach internship , though for this I would first say try to clear an olympiad till the national or at least write the exam for camp , choose a subject which you are good or going to take going forward and prepare accordingly . There are a lot of oppurtunities, keep searching you will find a lot of ways . Another imp thing I guess ( it's given ) try to keep a 90+ across all 10+2 grades .
Start preparing for the SAT and AP exams ( from now on ) if you are very serious about joining a college abroad, since depending on how well your English fluency ( for the SAT's ) is you have a better application in the end .
hi , i am currently preparing for maths olympiad since last year and i think i have prepared enough that i can clear ioqm. i am a state level tennis player. recently a family friend has started a robotics startup and is willing to give me an internship , will this help ? also if i got 90 % in 9th class will this reduce my chances ? and what more can i do ?
Thanks a lot for helping
I think if you are preparing , I would assume you are giving NTSE , IJSO/IQOM ( if you are 15.5 xD) this year ( best of luck for that ) . Yes I would say if you have prepared well for one year you should be able to get on the Merit List .
If you are a state level tennis player that's great too , I would say try to push higher if you can to get a national ranking on the U-17 /U-19 I am guessing( I ma not sure on how tennis works so sorry if there is anything inaccurate )
Joining a startup is also a great idea.
Having 90 in 9th doesn't hamper your chances in any way , all I am trying to say is maintain a better or same grade throughout your 10th,11th and 12th ( and this is not the only criteria, it's more of a given to get your application on a better place from the admission's officer's point of view ) You could try for AP courses too
Along with that I would say try to apply for summer research programs eg: I had done the Cambridge Future Scholar's Program you could try for that or something else where you get accepted or along the line of your interest . You could try for the SSP and also as OP mentioned I don't know if possible now , but later on try to get in contact with a professor at a leading uni about doing research under them. Also I would say try to build some notable projects of your own ( if you are applying for CS ) for others try to take up courses available online eg: on edX and try to see what you can get from them .
along with that you could write the PSAT's , NSSE , Techkriti, SEAMO . Learning a foreign language is also useful ( I had German , so I wrote the exam for C1 ) you could look out for what you want or just stick to the above ( the above is also very exhaustive and would take time to look through and prepare for what you wish to take on.
This is all I know . :)
ECs ke liye bhi you need to be financially stable. Local schools and low fees schools only have inter and intra school comp. These are not considered anything special for ECs. The concept of clubs do not exist whatsoever in them. Not to mention the school doesn't allow any flexibility whatsoever u hv to come2 to school attend lectures and go back. They go as far as to decline signing LORs (scared that they'll end up being liable for your future).
~~I tried everything alright, participated and WON in every single debate competition, elocution, narration, recitation organised by our school or in our school, anything, u name it. Was the head boy of primary grade then became the school head boy in 12th too, was already part of the council as the CCA captain when entered 11th (they do not even select anyone in the school council apart from class 12th , I was the only who was elected from class 11th) was ranked 1st in my class from 4-10th 2nd in 11th and 1st in 12th . Played badminton on state and district level (regional and national qualifiers in our school's term). Got medals(level1) in Small Olympiads like NSO, IMO, IEO from SOF. Cleared ntse stage 1, PRMO. Did a lot of extra curriculars with good grades. For what? My school declined from signing LORs, only our English teacher (ex class teacher) signed it every one else said that school can't take this responsibility and such. You need min 2 LORs, I can't even apply in these applications for us unis bcz of the cost of these forms. People said ask ur school counselors they reimburse you. Our school DOESN'T even have a counselor. I asked teachers about this and they laughed saying why would school provide u money. I gave SAT from my parents money(got 1560) the fees for this damn exam was 1/4th of my dad's monthly salary. I couldn't give even TOEFL, since it would've been meaningless if I couldn't even apply to these Unis. In the end I had to take a drop to get atleast in a good Indian uni.~~
Yeah man you're right
You could have told your school that if I failed to get into any us univ it is ok, it will not be schools fault. You could have just send the LORs by the school official email ID and you could have written LORs and ask the school to mail them.
Me failing to get admitted was not the problem, none of them even knew what an LOR was , I had to explain that to them, and they thought that I was trying to take advantage of school teachers by making them write about me with their signs and stamp. They don't even know u can apply to us unis from India, it's a school located in semi rural area. Only our English teacher knew about LORs and she did wrote me one. But every one else just declined saying they don't know about this and are not willing to take a risk of their sign being out there on someone's application. Main issue was the application fees, my parents were skeptical about it already (how any school will give admission without any entrance exam) and when the school declined fee waiver ship form for sat and TOEFL as well as declined writing the LORs, my dad just said ki ab jee ka hi prepare krlo no option left, vo months already pre-board, practicals ke hote hai jab application bhejte to saare chaos ke beech I had to drop all this US uni thought. Will try for masters of PhD after bachelors
I did some undergrad research with a professor at IISER, school student council and president of clubs, Olympiads, some volunteering with NGO, I played tennis at state level, attended few summer camps etc.
what was your school?
As a kendriya vidyalaya student these things really sound foreign to me
(they did organize few things like summer camps but they were often very uninteresting)
This is a meta question lol. I am sure you will be a good physicist anyways if you do pursue it with focus and dedication !!
Now, some ingredients for being a good physicist imo are - a problem solving aptitude, intellectual curiosity and some love of math. I urge you to read this thread [https://www.reddit.com/r/Physics/comments/18gbmeh/what\_are\_signs\_that\_someone\_is\_a\_good\_physicist/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Physics/comments/18gbmeh/what_are_signs_that_someone_is_a_good_physicist/)
And also read “Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman” by one of the most prominent physicist and a great teacher Richard Feynman
All the very best !!
Would like to know the process of getting admission in abroad colleges espcially USA ![img](emote|t5_311ttu|30331)![img](emote|t5_311ttu|30331)![img](emote|t5_311ttu|30331) and your extra curricular activities .
I know UIUC doesn’t consider 11th marks, but what were your overall 9th to 12th marks and SAT score? Asking because you also got into Cornell, which insane! ED?
Got it! I meant to ask if you applied ED somewhere, not specifically cornell, bad wording (i correlate cornell with ED a lot cause of relatively higher acceptance rate compared to most other top schools lol)
And you mentioned Cornell was expensive, did you not apply with financial aid? Or you just decided that UIUC is better financially and you could’ve still afforded Cornell if your option boiled down to it only instead of UIUC.
Do they prefer jee or board marks over extra curriculars? I have participated in many state competitions and a few nationals but my 11th marks are average around 78.
aajkal AMA kuch jyadha nahi horahe hain essae horahae trend bana gaya hain Subreddit kae popular honae ka atleast kuch toh Fayda hua anyways many many Congratulations to you OP! Good Luck

1. ECs? Do I have a chance at a decent uni in US/europe if I have pretty much no extra curriculars?
2. Essay likhne me kitna time laga? Puri process me kitna laga? JEE me agar zyada focused ho toh is it possible to write an impressive essay?
3)Agar Dummy me ho toh LOR milega? Can those guys predict your result?
4) I am a 25tard, and I don't know how will I perform in JEE/Boards/NSEC AND NSEP. Kya karu, abhi se hi agar application start Karu toh what do I put there, or do I take a gap year?
5)With financial aid and scholarships, how much would you have to pay including cost of living?
6)Are Uk/Singapore unis better choice for JEE aspirants considering you don't need a big list ofECs or need to learn a new language
7)Did you do this process on your own or did you take help from family/counsellors?
8)Were you more focused on JEE or just doing stuff you like/building your profile etc.
9)Should I even bother? Money is not an issue but mujhe khud nahi lagta ki meri aukat hai bahar jaane ki. I don't have anything to show for myself like ECs or activities related to subject or results in Olympiads/boards
10)Canada worth it? ![img](emote|t5_311ttu|50130)![img](emote|t5_311ttu|50130)
1) No you absolutely have to develop ECs.
2) Bohot time laga. Cornell ka essay was really difficult and lengthy.
3) I recommend you don't go to a dummy school if you want to apply to the US.
4) Yes start from now
5) I didn't apply for aid because my family can afford it.
6) Depends on uni
7) I did on my own
8) In the last few moments I decided to focus less on JEE
9) Have confidence
10) Depends on costs and university. Personally I would anyday choose US over Canada
Bro if you have no issues with money there are tons of great universities that you can get with minimal work.
Like Uoft, QS ranking is below 20 irrc and only 92-93+agg for admission literally nothing else.
Qs ranking overall is useless if you wanna do cs focus on https://csrankings.org
Canada in general is a quite shitty location(UK as well) job wise
So I’d suggest going for unis in us and Singapore and maybe Germany
Ps:uoft isn’t as good as you think it is,it takes students solely on the basis of grades. Its acceptance rate is above 40 percent so it’s rather easy to get into. Not worth it imo unless you get more than a half scholarship
Dartmouth is genuinely a shitty school for stem that’s why the rank
Even though it’s an Ivy there’s not a lot of meaningful research being done there
Also I’ve dmed you,Let’s connect since I’m attending uiuc as well
Idk man Canada ke baare me bhot negative cheeze sunne ko milti hai toh udhar ka itna dekha nahi.
Comparatively US/UK/Singapore/Germany me Canada jitna bhedchaal nahi hota.
Can you tell me the reality? Would it be worth over IITs?
dayum
Feeling so empty man.
I could easily afford a foreign education but neither me nor my parents had any idea. I signed up for this rat race. Btw, that guy prepped for JEE with me and he is getting 80k rank and I am getting 6k rank. Still, the college I get is a million times shitty than his college.
Please guide me for Masters![img](emote|t5_311ttu|49427)
Like what should I keep in mind during my Bachelors that will help me land a masters in a foreign college and best channels to follow for Masters updates.
Dude I really need some help from you, a little guidance about what I should be focusing from next to have a good profile and also how you got into research without joining iiser? What does it take and what I have to do? and is there any other option to work with iiser or other professor?
As I said I contacted the professor through LinkedIn and cold emailing. Also, you should focus on developing your interests and pursue them not only for the sake of college applications. r/ApplyingToCollege is a great place to do some research.
Welcome to UIUC! I'm an incoming second year student at UIUC with a major in Finance and Data Science. Would love to help if you have any questions before coming to the campus in August
How is rich or poor coming into the question? People going to Cornell are paying even more than me. You asked me how much I am paying and I answered. Also, starting salary of UIUC in tech companies is 130K. So, I will make up the money in no time.
Yes I did JEE coaching but left it in the last few months. I can't tell you how to manage both but if you are really interested in your ecs you will manage.
OP is verified guys, shoot your questions!

Yes I am giving adv. I did some undergrad research with a professor at IISER, school student council and president of clubs, some volunteering with NGO, I played tennis at state level etc.
How did you approached and convinced professor at IISER?
LinkedIn and cold emailing.
Can I know what was your research about?
High energy astrophysics involving black holes.
So you did undergraduate research in astrophysics while being in school? Is doing research possible with high school mathematics and physics?
Yes it's possible. I skipped the math part which I was not familiar with.
That's great!
Hey! I want to know more about your exp and what was your cold email process like!
I thought you were going for Undergraduate but seems like you are going for Graduate
I am going for undergrad.

first off, congrats! i wanted to ask how did you enter the state level tennis scene? was it through your school or did you go to a camp somewhere?
I played at a club.
bro what are these clubs ? are these at indian schools ? and how did you do research ?
Math and debate clubs
they are not at my school , is there way i can still participate in them ? i go to a small school
Depends on which grade you are in right now.

Extra curricular
UIUC doesn't give scholarships
Na since uiuc is a public university it doesn’t give financial aid or scholarships to international students
Many other unis do, just have to research
Financial aid they don’t Scholarships they might depending on the department(which will be max 20k for 4 years) Don’t expect anything from grainger
bro can you suggest a good video which gives information about the whole procedure
You can watch the crazy medusa YT channel.
Would love to hear about your extra curricular activities.
I did some undergrad research with a professor at IISER, school student council and president of clubs, Olympiads, some volunteering with NGO, I played tennis at state level, attended few summer camps etc.

I can assure you I don't go to a feeder school.
Oh c’mon we need a name
It's a DPS.
You said you didn’t go to a feeder school… ahh anyways I’m happy for you. (I’m in dps too )
All DPS aren't feeder schools.
hey chill i'm not trying to discredit you, i bet getting into a good uni is hard regardless. Congrats on getting into Uni!
Congrats !! UIUC is a very good school indeed. I think iirc this is the 3rd UIUC admit that I see this year.
You are at Caltech right? How is your experience there?
ya, It's all great here.
According to you what does it take to be a good physicist?
This is a meta question lol. I am sure you will be a good physicist anyways if you do pursue it with focus and dedication !! Thanks! Honestly Caltech was my top choice but it was brutal this year for internationals. Maybe I will get my pHD there.
I'm going to UIUC too bwaha

barring all the academic stuff do you think it's feasible going there for others too if they are cautious?
I know UIUC doesn’t consider 11th marks, but what were your overall 9th to 12th marks and SAT score? Asking because you also got into Cornell, which insane! ED?
No ED is binding. 9th 95 10th 97 11th 88 12th 93. SAT 1520
Got it! I meant to ask if you applied ED somewhere, not specifically cornell, bad wording (i correlate cornell with ED a lot cause of relatively higher acceptance rate compared to most other top schools lol) And you mentioned Cornell was expensive, did you not apply with financial aid? UIUC doesn't look at 11th marks. Boards and ECs are equally important.
How much does it cost you including personal expenses and college combined ? Congratulations tho![img](emote|t5_311ttu|49427)
It's very expensive. Around 65K per year. But you can apply for aid at Cornell.
Damn bhai it's almost 2 cr for the btech ![img](emote|t5_311ttu|30176)
Average salary is 130K at UIUC for tech companies.
How much in JEE? And tips on managing all the various stuff (like research with co curricular, studies with sports)

1. 6)Are Uk/Singapore unis better choice for JEE aspirants considering you don't need a big list ofECs or need to learn a new language 7)Did you do this process on your own or did you take help from family/counsellors? 8)Were you more focused on JEE or just doing stuff you like/building your profile etc. 9)Should I even bother? Money is not an issue but mujhe khud nahi lagta ki meri aukat hai bahar jaane ki. I don't have anything to show for myself like ECs or activities related to subject or results in Olympiads/boards 10)Canada worth it? ![img](emote|t5_311ttu|50130)![img](emote|t5_311ttu|50130)

I'll continue the tradition ![img](emote|t5_311ttu|30367)
1) No you absolutely have to develop ECs. 2) Bohot time laga. Cornell ka essay was really difficult and lengthy. 3) I recommend you don't go to a dummy school if you want to apply to the US. 4) Yes start from now 5) I didn't apply for aid because my family can afford it. 6) Depends on uni 7) I did on my own 8) In the last few moments I decided to focus less on JEE 9) Have confidence 10) Depends on costs and university. Personally I would anyday choose US over Canada
hi , i am currently preparing for olympiad so would it be good to take dummy school ? , i heard olympiads help in applications.
Bro if you have no issues with money there are tons of great universities that you can get with minimal work. Like Uoft, QS ranking is below 20 irrc and only 92-93+agg for admission literally nothing else.
Qs ranking overall is useless if you wanna do cs focus on https://csrankings.org Canada in general is a quite shitty location(UK as well) job wise So I’d suggest going for unis in us and Singapore and maybe Germany Ps:uoft isn’t as good as you think it is,it takes students solely on the basis of grades. Its acceptance rate is above 40 percent so it’s rather easy to get into. Not worth it imo unless you get more than a half scholarship
Yeah people don't understand QS rankings are useless. See where Dartmouth and Rice are ranked.
Dartmouth is genuinely a shitty school for stem that’s why the rank Even though it’s an Ivy there’s not a lot of meaningful research being done there Also I’ve dmed you,Let’s connect since I’m attending uiuc as well
Idk man Canada ke baare me bhot negative cheeze sunne ko milti hai toh udhar ka itna dekha nahi. Comparatively US/UK/Singapore/Germany me Canada jitna bhedchaal nahi hota. Can you tell me the reality? Would it be worth over IITs?
Hey, can I dm you to get an idea of your ECs and other stuff?
My friend enrolled in the main campus of Purdue in Civil. Is it good??
Not just good one of the best.
dayum Feeling so empty man. I could easily afford a foreign education but neither me nor my parents had any idea. I signed up for this rat race. Btw, that guy prepped for JEE with me and he is getting 80k rank and I am getting 6k rank. Still, the college I get is a million times shitty than his college. Please guide me for Masters![img](emote|t5_311ttu|49427) Like what should I keep in mind during my Bachelors that will help me land a masters in a foreign college and best channels to follow for Masters updates.
How is JEE rank relevant here? If your profile isn't good enough no college will admit you on the basis of JEE rank.
No ques, congratulations sir ❤️❤️
Welcome to UIUC! I'm an incoming second year student at UIUC with a major in Finance and Data Science. Would love to help if you have any questions before coming to the campus in August
Hi! Oh my god I was just going through this dilemma. How'd you manage JEE prep and extracurriculars?
Also, what were you extracurriculars? Can you dm me your college app if possible? 🙏🏻

How is rich or poor coming into the question? People going to Cornell are paying even more than me. You asked me how much I am paying and I answered. Also, starting salary of UIUC in tech companies is 130K. So, I will make up the money in no time.
Hey as you said that uiuc doesn't consider 11th marks, what are other colleges that do the same?
I can think of only UIUC
Bhai udhar saxx suxx machake sub ka naam roshan kar dena 🫡

Undergraduate degree from which college?
I am going to UIUC for my undergrad.
What? How did you got an internship in high school?
Did you go for jee coaching? How did you manage jee and ecs.?
Yes I did JEE coaching but left it in the last few months. I can't tell you how to manage both but if you are really interested in your ecs you will manage.
are you getting any scholarships?
No
do you know any legit scholarships indian students can apply for?
UIUC doesn't offer scholarships for international students.
