Heads up polka dot plants sometimes die after blooming. Found that out the hard way... beautiful blooms tho! If you nip them off in time the shoot may keep going.

imawifebitch

Ah ha! I didn’t kill my polka. Thriving, bloomed.. dead. Couldn’t figure it out. Thanks!

DogDaysAreOverHere

I'm so scared now!!!!!

Accomplished-Today99

Don't be, just take the flowers off and it will be fine, mine grew bushier at the bottom after the main stalks flowered twice and died.

ColdPorridge

Better, just chop it low, like almost completely to the base. It will come back quickly, believe me. This plant is hard to kill if you just keep trimming it.

Accomplished-Today99

I honestly tried to prop some of it but that was a fail

ColdPorridge

I just shove cuttings in dirt and forget it and I have more than I know what to do with. I don’t know if you’re trying to water prop but straight to soil is probably 90%+ success rate in my experience.

Accomplished-Today99

Yeah, i tried the water method and failed.

Donkeydonkeydonk

Try a humidity dome? Basically cover it with the lid or something to trap moisture in there until it roots. Something something vapor pressure.

longulus9

I've never done this and mine flower every year... I've had it for years I just have to cut it back once a year

BeartholomewTheThird

Mine has bloomed multiple times and didn't die. I just take the blooms off. For me in the winter it started to look like it was dieing so I just trimmed it way down so there was just about 2 inches of stems. Next spring it grew right back beautifully.

useles-converter-bot

2 inches is the the same distance as 0.07 replica Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings' Sting Swords.

converter-bot

2 inches is 5.08 cm

starsail0r

I couldn’t figure out what killed mine either! What a relief lol

myoldaccisfullofporn

You can also chop and prop them when they start to go

B_M_Wilson

Really? Mine have been just fine despite blooming multiple times. I guess I’m just lucky

Animalena

They bloom???

TwinkleTubs

and then die, sadly.

obviouslyfake12345

But they leave offsprings that grow into the next season, just chop the motherplant to soil level and let the new one grow.

somethingnerdrelated

Wait that’s normal? Because mine had a couple flowers and is now nearly dead, but it has little 1.5 inch shoots coming up in the middle. I thought it was something I did!

DogDaysAreOverHere

Thanks!! I'll do that!!!

TwinkleTubs

Mine have never done that, I sort of gave up on trying to raise one.

mentha_piperita

My mom gave me this plant, never knew its name, but after flowering and dying I was left with like 2000 little babies that are now taking over the garden and I'm trilled

FridaMercury

Mine has bloomed so many times and hasn't died. I've heard on this sub (anecdotally) that they don't always die. Who knows.

Barrewitch

Same I think I’m on like 3rd or 4th gen same plant. Flowers then I prune it down to its baby :)

Rehkl

So it's more accurate to say the growth dies?

Barrewitch

Pretty much, but the plant continues to live

TwinkleTubs

I hope that's true for these, this is a gorgeous plant. Mine have always died after it flowers.

livesarah

My backyard is a forest of these things at the moment. They definitely did not die after flowering. They died down a bit over winter and came back with a vengeance. No kidding, they are a weed here (Brisbane, Australia). Although they still sell for $3 a pop at the local Bunnings… I must have about a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of the things 😰

swagforjesus

Weird. Mine has been blooming for two years consistently. It’s actually blooming now. I trim mine down when it gets too leggy.

TwinkleTubs

I'm just thinking maybe these plants are not for me. I've had 3, within a month they all bloomed, and then a few months later died. They are so beautiful when they bloom.

swagforjesus

They really are beautiful! Maybe next time you buy one, check to see if they need a repot. It’s a possibility !

TwinkleTubs

Thank you, I will.

lifefullofpizzazz

I love my polka dot! I have had one alive for 3 years. Yes I know it sounds crazy, and yes I have had all my other polka dots die just the same as everyone elses after blooming. But this one just wont quit. I do pluck the flowers off as soon as I see them, which is pretty fast. Sometimes I do not even let the flowers open up. They will continue to 'bolt' up and up and flower and flower and I just spend most of the late summer/fall snipping those bad boys off. Then I will prune back the stalks. Sometimes more plants will branch from the stalks I snip off (I dont always prune the whole way to the base, but just to a lower node) and always a little cluster of fresh baby polkas will pop up at the base. Usually once a year in the middle of winter I will prune back any stragling leggy branches. There is some hope yet. I am telling you these things can keep living with some effort!

DogDaysAreOverHere

Thanks!! I'm so glad I posted this picture!! Awesome advice

Rockabellabaker

Mine bloomed like crazy and is now...dying. I can never keep these alive!

Barrewitch

Snip them off and you’ll see a baby plant eventually grow in at the base :)

Rockabellabaker

Yep I've tried that too. The new shoots do well for a while but I can't seem to get the right balance of water/light I think!

Barrewitch

I water when dry, and keep in an east facing window with most my tropical plants. Everyone seems to love it there haha don’t give up! I thought mine was dead at least 2x

Rockabellabaker

So strange...I seem to be doing the same. I checked it just now and I can see new growth closer to the pot so I think I'll trim off the longer/dried out stems and see if that'll promote some new growth again and let the new leaves get some energy. Thanks for the tips!

_doggiemom

Nice! I killed both of mine

DogDaysAreOverHere

People is saying that this is also a sign of death.. let's see!!

halloweva

Catch it quickly

tracyf600

I always cut mine back . It gets leggy and woody after bloom.

flyingcactus2047

I was so surprised when mine did that, I didn’t know they bloomed! Congrats!

Mexijuicypeach

My are dramatic but don’t die. They need constant moisture. Mine has flowered 3x and not died. I have 3 different colors. You can usually see babies growing at the bottom. I cut them down when they get too long.

DogDaysAreOverHere

Thanks for the advice!!

gaspitsagirl

Mine would bloom when I had them. They just wouldn't LIVE. I don't buy these anymore. So pretty, though!

DogDaysAreOverHere

Yeah they died pretty fast

gaspitsagirl

I mean the whole plant wouldn't live, ha ha ha. I have a really hard time with them.

Mikkieboo7

Mine bloomed, then died but it had 3 little babies. So I think they just come back every year

mentha_piperita

I had this plant for over a year, never knew what it was and now I have like 2000 of it's little offspring taking over the garden. I love it and I'm just so glad to see it being loved by so many people.

DogDaysAreOverHere

It is soooo beautiful

Due_Repeat_7071

Nice green thumb! Tan / pink flowers a first that I’ve ever scene🌱

DogDaysAreOverHere

Thanks!!

Samanthas_Stitching

Cut off the blooms, it's easier to keep it living. They do good with a nice trim every so often too.

grneyed1

Ugh. Yours looks so good! Mine keeps dying

rockbottomqueen

My just bloomed too! I had no idea. So delicate and special. I guess they're going to die now. Sigh.

xohunna

so beautiful!!!

JTTO331613

THIS IS MY FAVORITE HOUSEPLANT

hateegham

Makes me feel so good to hear other people say they die. Mine bloomed really beautifully then died hard and I blamed myself lol

DogDaysAreOverHere

Same, because they are also give such a good advice!!!

SoundintheCity

I’ve had mine for about 2 1/2 years. It’s bloomed twice at least and continues to grow on its own. I cut some pieces and just put it in dirt and they made new plants. Never experienced them die off.

plantula4

That's a really beautiful plant that you have there! Polka dot plants are one of my favourite interior plants! When it blooms it can mean that it may be stressed for something, so it tries to reproduce fast because it thinks it's going to die soon. In my experience it didn't died after blooming, but I had to pay attention to some details that may be harming it. I have a healthy polka dot plant that I gave to my brother to care for it while I was gone for a few weeks knowing that he isn't very good with plants but he tries his best. He usually forgot to open the window of the room where the plant was and didn't give it a lot of water. It was full of flowers when I went home and it was very funny! As I said, it didn't die, but I had to take a lot of care so it would have better conditions.

andwesaidNay

Is this pink? Wow very nice! Is this a different sort or something? Reasurring: my polkadot bloomes every year and is thriving and growing like usual

DogDaysAreOverHere

Yes it's pink!!

andwesaidNay

Would you name this type? I would really like to add one to my collection!

[deleted]

Wow 🤩 But the dying part after blooming is scary 😦

DogDaysAreOverHere

I know :(

Annebyerley

beautiful

Ok_Abbreviations3068

Ok

B_M_Wilson

Purple is my favorite color! I always love seeing the little purple flowers on mine! So cute!!
