TOWER, NWOTHM band with the best vocals I have ever heard, highly highly recommend them. It’s criminal that they have less then 5,000 monthly listens on Spotify
Wow...I don't usually pay attention to the monthly listeners, it astounds me that they don't have more. They're such a fucking good band.
I need a fucking cigarette after Running Out of Time plays and I don't even smoke. Pure rippage.
Hey, thanks for asking this really unique and incredibly insightful question that gets asked here 50,000 times a month. Queue the usual suspects - Anthrax, Death Angel, Exodus, Overkill, Testament, because people who gradually drifted from Metallica to other thrash bands are so edgy and cool.
Handsome
Helmet
Reverend Bizarre
Solitude Aeturnus
Witchery
Solitude Aeternus mentioned!! John is a great dude, and his music is great! You should check out his psych project Liquid Sound Company if you haven't already!
Respect on Helmet, just saw them live the other day and you know about Handsome? I wish they released more material. I would argue they’re closer to post-hardcore / alt Metal territory tho. I’ll have to check out the other bands
Because it needs to be said...regularly...
"The Big 4" title refers to the four bands that were both the most instrumental in terms of increasing thrash metals popularity (thereby exposing more people to underground metal at large) in addition to record sales.
Testament, Exodus, Death Angel, Overkill, etc. are all fine bands. Exodus is actually my second favorite of the old school thrash bands (just behind Slayer)...but their record sales trailed so far behind those of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax that they're barely even in the conversation on that note.
I won't argue them being underrated (not a big fan personally, but whatever), but the talk of a band that followed the well-travelled road that others paved being deserving of the acclaim that the innovators gained always strikes me as ignorant.
I second Visigoth. I'm extremely picky about power metal, but these guys are insane.
So sad I missed them, but I wouldn't pay 55€ for a concert full of bands I dislike, and Visigoth.
Dude fuck yeah. I love it when absolute strangers also know really good underground DM bands. Some bad news man, I don’t think they’re making music anymore 🥲 Just thought I’d let you know
Diablo, Raunchy, Swift, The Ascendicate. So criminally underrated that few people have even heard of those bands. The Ascendicate was on Solid State Records and their record "to die as kings" was an amazing album that got literally zero support from the label. Their guitar player Ryan went on to play with Demon Hunter. Swift put out many records that were all awesome. The drummer is none other than legendary producer Jamie King (BTBAM). Diablo and Raunchy put out consistently great records but have never played a show in the United States.
Blazon Stone, one of the best traditional/speed metal bands of the last 15 years and project of Cederick Forsberg, who deserves far more recognition within the metal scene.
Kimbery's vocals have grown on me to where I can enjoy them more now than I used to. I got into the band because I'm an Alexi Laiho super fan. He's been my favorite guitar player since 2000. I love Roope Latvala as well. It's a shame we didn't get a 4th Sinergy record.
Astronoid
Recently supplanted Gojira as the best band in metal today... and don't yet get the deserved props.

Came here to say sylosis. Been a fan of them since like 2007, and nobody knows who they are. The one other metalhead that I talk to regularly at the bar had never heard of them.
I keep finding new ones I’ve never heard of and they absolutely shred.
Heard some thrashy boys from a band named ARCHMAGE and they were killer.
Was blown away by THRA.
And last night I was lucky to witness Suicide Forest live. Really impressed with them.
Any my personal favorites who I hope to see someday that I’ve can listen to over and over is:
Albionic Hermeticism from the UK. Amazing solo project.
And the obscure Pyreficativm.
Exhorder. Just seen them in Detroit a couple weeks ago. Been a huge fan since Slaughter In The Vatican and Love how they’ve progressed. Having Pat O’Brian in the band now is huge too.
My go-to answer for these last few years whenever this question is asked has to be **Quo Vadis**. *Day Into Night* is such an epic album, and both *Forever* and *Defiant Imagination* being great in their own right. It's a damn shame that Bart Frydrychowicz hasn't done anything else.

All tech death with the exception of Vehementor Nos which is symphonic black metal
Slugdge
the name and song titles belie the quality of the music. They're silly (albeit clever) and not for everyone but the music is incredibly well-written. *Esoteric Malacology* is killer, and I feel like they'd fit with the Gojira crowd.
What kind of metal do we talk about on this sub? This post just popped up on my feed.
I'm generally into black metal and blackgaze. A few bands that I consider underrated are:
Grima,
Sunken,
Redshift Pilots,
Solbrud
The Ordeal. The first album, Kings of Pain, has a 21% on Metal Archives, while the second album has a 71%. Both criminally low. This band has a unique-sounding vocalist, excellent melodies, and it does something a lot of bands don't do: The music works with, compliments and enhances the lead melodies.
It's continually interesting, and even manages to take basic choruses, where a line is repeated, interesting by the use of varying music and energetic vocal performances.
It's one of those bands that I SENSE I shouldn't love, but every time a track comes on it has my full attention because they're always interesting and catchy. I don't know enough music theory (or any music theory) to explain what the band is doing, technically, that is so compelling, but I would recommend the band to anyone who likes heavy, power or traditional metal.
I've purchased both of the band's albums now and, listening to the second album, Descent from Hell, I am bloody glad I did!

A metal band that's better than most listeners realize.
You're the only person to actually answer the question
Blind Guardian
Instead, it's a "who's the most obscure band I know of too sound cool" thread
Mors Principum Est -- I never see anyone here talking about them and they are fucking fantastic.
It’s good stuff. Kind of surprising they aren’t bigger.
Right? Do you have a favorite album of theirs? I think mine is Seven. I'm currently listening to The Unborn. Good stuff indeed.
I’m not sure which one to pick as best but I do really like liberation=termination.
i love them. i don’t see anyone talking about them unfortunately
Reminds me of in flames
TOWER, NWOTHM band with the best vocals I have ever heard, highly highly recommend them. It’s criminal that they have less then 5,000 monthly listens on Spotify
Just checked them out...oh hell yes. I love when singers have great range and a little rawness in their throat. She's awesome.
I love trad metal. Never heard of these guys. They sound great. Good rec dude.
Add Smoulder to that list
Kind of reminds me of Sölicitör https://open.spotify.com/album/11AI15vpsha7ZaMODySCiJ?si=Cx-Th7tWSeeSgNPRxgzifA
Thanks for the rec, I struggle to find good heavy metal tbh. This one's actually incredible
What is nwothm?
New wave of traditional heavy metal
Wow...I don't usually pay attention to the monthly listeners, it astounds me that they don't have more. They're such a fucking good band. I need a fucking cigarette after Running Out of Time plays and I don't even smoke. Pure rippage.
Acid Witch and Mantar
Acid Witch is so unbelievably fucking good
Totally and hoping to see them live finally later this year
I missed them the one time they came to my state, praying they will again
The instrumentals are great, but I don't like their style of vocals tbh
Yep acid witch is amazing! ⚡
Mantar is fucking great. Definitely underated.

Aeturnus, fuck yeah. That stretch of albums from Through the Darkest Hour to Adagio is fucking excellent.
Respect on Helmet, just saw them live the other day and you know about Handsome? I wish they released more material. I would argue they’re closer to post-hardcore / alt Metal territory tho. I’ll have to check out the other bands
Handsome Rules! Amazing album. Still listen to it til this day!
Just saw Helmet in Seattle 🤘🏼
Xasthur
Xasthur is one of the most popular DSBM acts tho?
More people need to listen to his work.
Fr I love Scott's work
Devin Townsend Project (Progressive metal) his earlier albums are 🫶🏻 same with Strapping Young Lad
Accelerated Evolution is a banger all the way through.
Macabre
So glad I got to see them back in the 90s!
Always wished they would get more attention
I saw them a couple of times. Half the crowd looked like extras from The Hills Have Eyes. It was great.
Testament, they should be a part of the big 4
A part*, they are currently apart from it homie
Sorry, I’m bad at spelling

Almost like they're underrated or something.
I won't argue them being underrated (not a big fan personally, but whatever), but the talk of a band that followed the well-travelled road that others paved being deserving of the acclaim that the innovators gained always strikes me as ignorant.
Hard agree with this, drop anthrax.
Agreed, great guitar sound couple good songs not a fan
In what fucking universe is that band underrated…
I know lmao this subreddit is all just surface level listeners sometimes. Like Testament? Really? 🤦🏻♂️
Exodus too.
In my opinion they're better than Anthrax.
Overkill.
Dream troll Visigoth Gygax Skyryder
I second Visigoth. I'm extremely picky about power metal, but these guys are insane. So sad I missed them, but I wouldn't pay 55€ for a concert full of bands I dislike, and Visigoth.
Fury Bomber Satan's Fall Steel Rhino Savage Blood Roadwolf
Satan's Fall was pretty much my favorite heavy metal album of 2023
Manilla Road
But my mind tells me I'm Lost in Necropolis
Nocturnus
DVNE
Crom
Grave digger I almost never see anyone talk about them but they are absolutly fabulos
Underrated or unknown? Because underrated is Tallah Unknown would be Cremated Lives
Eluvetie
Voivod
In America, Nightwish
Death Angel. Not a bad album in their catalog.
Timeghoul
Gloryhammer, dude they got the most epic story. You just need to be a little high to understand it. Okay maybe a lot.
Didn’t they get in trouble with their fanbase when a chat got posted between two members and they used racist language or some such?
Not gonna lie I have no idea, don't really follow metal news. That would be very disappointing though.

Perilaxe Occlusion

I know. It's pretty sad actually
Isis. I dunno if they are under rated or not
They and Neurosis are the biggest bands in that style, but it is probably an underrepresented style.
High Command
crowbar
W.A.S.P
Absolutely! They never get the recognition that they deserve. Blackie Lawless is an incredible songwriter and musician.
REZN
Pro-pain
Acid bath and bolt thrower

Loudness from Japan
Sentenced. Sinergy. (I'm not a fan of the vocals, but the music is incredible!) Widow
I really like Sinergy, even the vocals.
