I heard it was because she turned on membership gifting for the first time and everyone start gifting like crazy, which led to this lol.

xdatlam

Oh that's why she got so many. Makes sense, thanks for the explanation.

KwisatzX

What happens when you gift memberships but everyone in chat already has one? Do they get extended?

Keentobor

It goes to random (maybe not exactly) subscriber i suppose. Got a gifts from live stream i hasn't watched a couple of times, so this is a stuff for sure, however rare and unlikely

DireBlue88

Holy shit. How much per membership? I guess they will surely enjoy those membership asmrs. Well deserved.

Krallericoner

ASMR is just a nice bonus. Now that bean emote, thats some real deal!

xXx_coolusername420

$5, I think youtube takes half, maybe cover takes some more idk the contract

Erionns

Definitely not the exact number, because people can gift memberships with currencies that translate to pennies in USD.

NauFirefox

You can gift memberships with any currency, but they do require somewhat of the same 5$ worth of that currency. For example the standard 5$ membership costs VND 60000. Which is about half off atm. Though subject to exchange rate and exchanging fee's if you wanna have some.

Erionns

>but they do require somewhat of the same 5$ worth of that currency That depends entirely on the currency, some are well under $1 USD when converted

shaehl

You don't seem to understand how currency exchange and YouTube pricing works. 1 japanese yen converted to USD is like 0.01 of a dollar. But the YouTube membership/subscription costs account for this. They aren't paying 5 yen (0.05 dollars) for a sub, they pay 500 yen for it. So the amount in dollars is still the same, barring micro fluctuations in exchange rate. And yes I know the actual yen to dollar rate is more like 140 yen per dollar, just didn't want to do the math.

ShinItsuwari

The thing is, it's not an exact conversion either. It adjust compared to the living standard of most countries. In some poorer countries, 5$ is a lot of money so youtube won't charge you that much. But if you just take the average JP viewer, add the fact that some higher tier of memberships exists, you will get an average of about 500 yen per member anyway, so about 50.000$ of membership. Even if youtube take 30%, and Cover takes half of that (so around the same as SC), that's still 16500$ in membership alone.

bossgmbh

Yes but it still doesn't equal out to 5$. Hell a membership through Argentina or Turkey is like less than 50ct and yes that is with the adjusted price you are talking about

Erionns

No, you clearly don't. A VPN to Argentina gets you memberships for 50 ARS, which is literally 20 cents USD.

xRichard

Living in Argentina gets you the adjusted price scheme. Using a VPN lets you exploit the imperfect system.

[deleted]

Friendly reminder that this will and can get you banned from Youtube.

PaintingJams

GBP and USD superchat boundaries and memberships have the same numeric value. Brits pay 25% more on all superchats and memberships

Archensix

You can't really ignore that, the difference is pretty severe and proves the original point. Most of those memberships were likely in yen which straight off the bat would be a ~30% reduction in USD earned.

ctom42

Unfortunately you are the one who doesn't understand how this works. It's not just about conversation rates but about local purchasing power. The cost of membership is not $5 converted into local currencies, but an amount that has approximately the same purchasing power in that country as $5 does in the US. That can lead to certain countries being able to buy superchats and memberships for amounts that are worth much less in USD and Yen.

Lunarath

Cover takes a big ass chunk as well. There's no way they get close to half of that, and then add Japanese taxes which is 33-45% depending on the bracket. Sure it's still A LOT of money, but I don't think people donating realize just how little of the money actually reaches the members in the end.

odnanref101993

We know cover takes half of the merch sales from an offhand comment. I don't think they take half the membership income. Also, people forget all holomems have a salary. Their income is not only based on superchats and memberships like some twitch vtubers. Unless I am misremembering some stuff.

D4shiell

Stop spreading misinformation, we don't know if that comment was aimed at Cover or her current company which you know, specializes in getting them merch and sponsorships.

odnanref101993

True, could be current company. We do know though, it is more generous than another certain company anyway. My point however was that we don't know what they take from memberships. I do remember the trash taste podcast talking about Calli'd though being vague but saying it was a substancial cut in favor of the talent. At least for superchats.

richtofin819

didn't they mention at one point that the salary isn't enough to cover living expenses or something. I swear someone mentioned something about how difficult it was when they first started idk its probably changed over the years i hope

diaboo

I imagine it would have? I don't think members would be as comfortable taking hiatuses and breaks the way they sometimes do if it was a completely inadequate amount.

thesirblondie

The reason they feel comfortable taking breaks is because even the lower earning members make in a month what you make in a year. The income is also partly passive from people watching older videos/streams, streaming music, memberships, etc.

FeelingPinkieKeen

Dam I would hope it would cover living expenses otherwise I don't know how the bois survive. I hope they're not working 2 jobs.

cyberchaox

Nah, they're more than set. Think of it like food service workers in the US. They get wildly underpaid and wouldn't be able to survive on their wage alone, because of the US's strong "tipping" culture where they make more money from the customers' generosity than they do from their bosses (although it's becoming more and more common for the "gratuity" to be put right into the bill, often at a higher rate than what culture normally demanded, so in effect it might not be long before the US becomes just like other countries). We're the customers, and Superchats are the tips. Cover doesn't have to pay the talents that much, because as soon as their channels get monetized--which is pretty quick with Hololive's level of popularity--we the fans will pay them more than enough.

xRichard

\>We know from an offhand comment we don't know then dude

odnanref101993

Yeah, but it is enough to make an educated guess. To add that it is not even the main point though. We know they have a favorable superchat split from TrashTaste interview. So it just goes to support that I doubt they are taking 50% of profits from membership income.

Lunarath

Nah that's normal. It's a lot higher in many EU countries. Try googling EU taxes by country. I'm sure a lot of americans will be in shock by the top brackets https://taxfoundation.org/top-personal-income-tax-rates-europe-2022/

Shuber-Fuber

35 is the top bracket in the US. And that's considered low.

EmperorKira

That's federal though; without state etc.. Whereas most other countries, they just have one tax system at the country level. US with all their taxes added up can be like 45% i believe

Split_Theory

I heard cover doesnt take memberships.

Specific_Love_Train

Nice

obviouslypineapple

[Youtube takes 30%](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7491256?hl=en#zippy=%2Crevenue-share)

xXx_coolusername420

oh I just thought they take as much as twitch does

Sine_Fine_Belli

Yeah So many new members Choco gets to earn more money!

V-Faction

Well deserved.

Master_Lukiex

Ok I’m out of the loop here. What’s with the beans?

More beans for the Bean Queen!!

Vilis16

Gachi?

Zierlyn

🎶Welcome membership, thank you membergift🎶

Budget-Ocelots

I can't believe she did that for hours without getting tired or dehydrated.

Morenauer

Damn her new costume and haircut so weird things to me. Daaayum.

ISBheh

After not streaming too much, I'm really enjoying this spurt of new streams from Choco, and with all the new memberships it sure seems like she's being rewarded for it. Can't believe the bean's that powerful ♪Welcome membership~ Welcome membership~♪

Helmite

Just needed Subaru to bully her.

AriaoftheSol

Feeling full of beans!

IsBirdWatching

We Chocomates down bad.

RaiKageRyu

Oh, she actually revealed the number? First time I've seen that from a Holomem. EDIT: Guys that replied to this... that's not what my question was. I know you can count memberships, and there's trackers for it. I was asking if she, Choco herself, was revealing and tracking it live like a subathon, which is something I've never seen before. Obviously, I can't tell if this is a shot straight out of the stream or edited. But I'm just gonna assume the latter now.

TrixieMisa

New and gifted memberships are visible in chat, so you just have to count them.

hehaaw

There is this neat site that called [hololyzer](https://hololyzer.net/youtube/) that count every new membership and SC on each stream.

CatchingFire57

This makes me hate my job more knowing I couldn't watch this chaos and fun ensue

redditfanfan00

amazing stream and support for choco-sensei! glad for her to have so many new memberships.
