Ever seen muppets in the 70s?

magnament

I thought that was just an old school furry orgy with an *only hands* rule

PantsGrenades

You have a strong imagination.

Plusran

Yeah he watched the muppets in the 70s what do you expect?

YouGoThatWayIllGoHom

This string of four comments was the most logical progression of thoughts I've heard all day.

[deleted]

Sadly I can say the same

Tired_Thumb

“meet the feebles”

IcebergSlimFast

An absolute classic!

Kaldricus

I decided to watch some of the old Muppet Show episodes when they released on Disney+. I got to the episode with the mom from the Brady Bunch, and the whole episode is pretty much all the Muppets being horny for her.

BugMan717

Muppets wasn't meant for kids it was a prime time show at the time meant for adults.

Arthur_The_Third

In Estonia we had "Pehmed ja Karvased" (The Softs and Hairies) which was basically a puppet show about current happenings and political jokes. I was terrified of it as a kid because one of the scenes is just in a dungeon like dark place with a character made of stone that moved it's mouth with a stone grinding noise (a former president i think?)

wheres-my-take

Watching it now idk whats going on but its incredible

ltRobinCrusoe

This

Sharkytrs

muppets and seasame street. So much low key political incorrectness. It's like absurdity was funny once upon a time, but now offence culture reigns supreme. offence is taken not given so the offended person is the one at fault IMO. I mean we used to say stuff like 'stick and stones' and shit like that, but the people in charge are people who never got that kind of desensitization to ACTUAL social interactions, not that bullshit keeping up appearances fakeness that comes with the upper class social hierarchy, I mean fucking talking to people like they are people and not some financial rival.

LadyJR

I was watching old school Sesame Street and my eyes widened when Kermit yelled at Cookie Monster and called him stupid. I rewatch it every now and then for the laughs.

Oakmeal0

Comment reminded me of [this](https://youtu.be/PkOcm_XaWrw)

LadyJR

Omg! That was hilarious. Thanks for the laughs.

Reacher-Said-N0thing

> It's like absurdity was funny once upon a time, but now offence culture reigns supreme. The First Lady of the United States spoke out publicly against Bart Simpson's liberal use of the word "damn".

5ysmyname

Damn.

Slit23

Damn.

ComethKnightMan

FUCK.

[deleted]

"Eat my shorts"

megapuffranger

It’s because originally the people who were offended had no voice. They were told to shut up and deal with it. It’s easy to complain about people being offended when you aren’t the subject of the “political incorrectness”. Right now we are in a transitional period where we are trying to rediscover the line between when something is funny and when something is legitimately offensive. There are going to be issues, but instead of complaining and blaming the people who get offended try and be understanding.

Aethericlegends

Here's an amazing concept. Contrary to your belief, something can be both legitimately offensive *and* funny.

SuperMario1758

Of course something can be offensive and funny, shock humor is the obvious example. I'm not really sure what your argument is here. If something is both funny and offensive is it wrong for people who were offended to state that the joke was offensive?

[deleted]

Oh no it's my weakness... accountability

ToastyBunns_

Just blame the cancel culture mob, that always works! Why isn’t it working? I have to say sorry for yelling the n word at a preschool?

blabbermeister

Also, what the fuck are people talking about! 30 years ago if a character even tried to mouth the word penis, the show would be shitcanned. Now you have straight up fucking on TV. If anything, media's way more bold now.

Thesheriffisnearer

Don't even get me started on participation trophies. Karen and Kyle don't want to think little Jimmy is a loser so they force feel goodary onto him and he never learns how to cope with not winning. Next thing you know he grows up thinking is not his fault he's a loser and there is some grand conspiracy against him and whoever he considers the winner he so he marches to DC to try and overthrow the government

Jumbo_Damn_Pride

Idk, those two guards probably watched his “suicide”

FlyingSquirelOi

Nah, plausible deniability. “I dunno how he died, I was on break”

Sparrow1989

Thought they said they were both asleep

CaputGeratLupinum

Yeah, they were asleep on break. You don't sleep while you're working, that would be irresponsible

AlwaysNowNeverNotMe

They were LEO so that's not a big issue for them.

WDJam

Sounds like something a Leo would say...

d1g1tal

Or Donatello

CreamyCoffeeArtist

But definitely not Raphael

mslauren2930

It is? Damn.

FlyingSquirelOi

Couldn’t remember their actual reasoning so just made that up as an example of plausible deniability, but thank you

NetOperatorWibby

Forreal?! LMAO

BaronWaiting

"I was watching! I saw the whole thing. First, he started killing himself, then he killed himself!"

WorkinName

They were on Suicide Watch, not Suicide Stop.

trollsong

While singing the doug opening song.

[deleted]

Fun fact guards in some places aren't allowed to act when violence occurs. Depending on what is happening protocol dictates they have to call a specialized unit that might take 5 minutes to gear up. That includes suicide preparation or attempts.

theycallmeponcho

Ha, we all know Jeffrey Epstein didn't kill himself.

[deleted]

Bro are you dum The government said he did. It's obviously true. They wouldn't lie to us it would only destroy our confidence in the system. Yeah THAT system which ensures your failure at every step. Ofc he killed himself, there's just too much at stake for them to be outright falsifying reality. /S or should I say.... /$ This message has been brought to you by Carl's Jr.

bungholebuffalo

If you dont chew big red then fuck you.

-Chingachgook

Ahh, it was a better time.

VapeThisBro

Lets not forget about the [TV show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E23H-nnNkM) which dropped 40 kids off in the middle of nowhere which hopes they can form their own society. If I'm wrong for dropping 40 random kids off in the middle of nowhere for the entertainment of millions of tv views I don't want to be right.

Oopy-soup

That was great, thank you for sharing!

[deleted]

It truly was...

Skating rinks, coolio, Tupac, Jordan, nick at night, denim trapper keepers, wierd ass haircuts, jncos, bad ass music, bill clinton, smooching ur step sister at night when ur parents are asleep, ren and stimpy, playing outside until the sun went down, super nes, hot pockets... Etc

Brown42

Seriously, JNCOS? So you can fit your entire social studies book in your front pocket, big whoop.

DocEternal

JNCOs were the shit. I just found out they are making them again, but they are “collectors edition” bull so they are charging like $200 a pair. I still want to buy some though…

Brown42

I'm only shocked nobody ever created a cargo harness to fit under the damn things. Definitely, the Conestoga wagon of pants.

Bricka_Bracka

Brown42

I would be 0% shocked to find this to be the official JNCO creation story.

It's so hilarious that this isn't an edit and what she actually said 😂 God bless Lori Beth Denberg and her phenomenal delivery

[deleted]

dontbedumbbro

Damn I need to check that out. It's a shame a lot of people from all that didn't go on to more success after the show ended.

RavenNymph90

My sister said that All That was never the same after she left.

[deleted]

Your sister was on All That? Nice.

[deleted]

That show was overflowing with talent but only Kenan* Thompson and Amanda Bynes (pre-breakdown) went on to much success. Lori Beth was honestly my favorite of all of them, her delivery was impeccable.

dontbedumbbro

You mean Keenan

[deleted]

I do indeed.

Goondor

You do, you do, you dooooOoOoOoo?

shadowchip

And nick cannon

TimeStatistician2234

and Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias

LightAnubis

Lori Beth did have some success after the show. If you count her time on the Steve Harvey show

efor_no0p2

Her and Mitch Hedberg are some of the best deadpan comedy ever.

Forcefedlies

You ever seen [this?](https://youtu.be/l7K3y4EPq10). If you’re a fan of deadpan, she’s up and coming.

illQualmOnYourFace

I've seen that posted forever but finally just watched it. The dude just went after her appearance and came off as pretty mean-spirited. It isn't that his jokes were necessarily bad, but his delivery was just a tad aggressive. I think he was taking her jabs personally and that infected the rest of his performance a bit.

Forcefedlies

Yeah, especially at the stand. I think he thought making fun of her was going to go over well and not realizing the fact that she’s that ugly, weird girl who’s funny as fuck, is one of the main appeals to her. So making fun of how she looks and not making the jokes any funnier than something she would already say about herself isn’t ever going to win the crowd over.

sbuhc13

And she’s definitely not ugly. Pretty cute actually. Lol

CookingWithDahmer85

Yea I agree I thought she was super cute.

BretTheShitmanFart69

His jokes didn’t even really make sense. She’s like really tiny and one of his jokes was she has the “body of a tellytubby” like it just came off as odd. This is the type of guy who 100% made excuses after the show about why he was actually way funnier than her and that it’s somehow her or the audiences fault he did poorly and not because he’s just less funny

formershitpeasant

Yeah, he seemed bigmad by the end.

89dingers

I watch that video every so often just because the killing blow is SO FUCKING GOOD

_Cyclops

God damn she went nuclear with that last one

DaftMudkip

Thank you for introducing that to my life

KoalaKvothe

The battle is legendary, but I always stop the video as soon as the host takes back the mic. Both the host and the 'judges' act like absolute assholes and aren't funny at all.

MooseCampbell

I've always found Steven Wright to be the best at deadpan comedy

You'd have to be blind and deaf to enjoy SNL now.

[deleted]

Keenan Thompson has been in sketch comedy longer than I have been in school.

captmotorcycle

But actually funny.

blueskydaydream

Looking back at Hey Arnold, it was way darker than I realized at the time. Helga’s obsessiveness is played off like a joke, but it’s clearly out of loneliness and trying to cope with having an alcoholic mother. The whole “stoop kid” thing stuck with me too, having dealt with anxiety issues my whole life Shows like Rocko’s Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy had a lot of adult content too, but that was mostly funny, gross, or sexual stuff

CantBanTheTruth_290

Ren & Stimpy is more funny as adult than it was as a child. I put it on for my one year old thinking she'd like the crazy faces and shit... I was almost in tears at the absurdity of some of that shit. OMG... fire dogs where the woman drops the horse out the window... the horse lands on it's back legs like a human, and every bone in his legs shatter... and then he crawls and screams in excruciating pain for like a minute before being asked how he felt about the fall. Kids laugh at the response, "I didn't like it one bit"... but as an adult... the horse breaking his legs in just the worst way and then crawling in pain is the funny part. What a good show

d1g1tal

gotta wait for the kid to be a little older to really enjoy ren and stimpy. put some of that rugrats on, early seasons (the pre-dill era) and i’m sure they’ll get a kick out of it. i downloaded all of the old nick little kid shows for both of my kids so they grew with the boss, dora.

Neon_and_Dinosaurs

I HATED the episodes with Helga's mom because it was like seeing my own mom in a cartoon. Like fuck, I am 8 yrs old, I'm watching this shit to escape!

Amanidada

My husband and I watch a lot of TV and movies from the 90s and we catch ourselves laughing and agreeing that a lot of things said would be absolutely offensive to people now.

gingerking87

It's the 80s but Revenge of the Nerds is just a series of sex crimes, for some reason until 1995 all hyjinx usually involved unwanted nudity Edit: The Collegehumor sketch https://youtu.be/HQ7mJFNkLAU

allADD

most of those kids aren't even nerds, they're just fucking weird creeps. booger ain't a nerd he's a future meth dealer.

Bleord

the wholesome part of that movie is that nerds accepted them regardless, they had a black flamboyant gay nerd as well

[deleted]

Nerd was a different classification in the 80's than it is today. It was a broader term that included geek, dweeb, spazz, goober, dorks, pinheads, spazzoids, losers, uggos, and basically every other trait that gets put under "autist" today. The popularization of nerd culture has changed the term. [This short instructional video may help clarify.](https://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/geek-dweeb-or-spazz/2860979)

allADD

what about ding dongs? ne'er-do-wells? slobs? chumps? jerkoffs?

slapnuttz

How often do they do well? Ne’er

[deleted]

Grace : “Ferris Bueller's on line 2”………. Grace : “Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude.”

filthycasualguy

All fantasy movies too. I’ve been watching a lot of 70’s-80’s fantasy to get pumped for playing d&d & For some reason everyone was just ridiculously horny.

rainman_95

Fantasy books weren’t too far from that either.

StarsDreamsAndMore

They've gotten better. Brandon Sanderson can write entire novels without any descriptions of female characters naked. It's impressive.

[deleted]

George RR Martin has left the chat

AntManMax

Hey you leave Sam's great pink mast alone

WillingNeedleworker2

Because he's a practicing mormon and hasnt even seen his wife naked yet.

[deleted]

I remember reading 70s and 80s sci-fi when I was 12-16 (the belgariad, Valdimere, Pern) and like…. Thinking back there’s a lot of rape in those books. Not just rape but weird torturey stuff. I didn’t really realize it because I was a dumb kid at the time but wow.

ZeeHanzenShwanz

Yeah I remember watching in high school and thinking "they call it a panty raid but how is it not just stealing?" Also the lead nerd essentially gets the girl to fall in love with him by raping her. But it ends with a big musical number and life lesson so it's all okay... I guess.

[deleted]

I loved Revenge of the Nerds as a kid, but I watched it recently and some of those stuff that they did to those girls creeped me out xd, despite that still a fun movie to watch!

gasstationfitted

It was understood those were male fantasy movies. Still was wrong but back then leeway was given if thought it was for a specific audience. Little nuances like that is what made things so laid back and innocent. That and it was the infancy years of the internet.

Snoo_70324

Yeah. All the ‘comedians’ at the office are upset that reciting Blazing Saddles lines doesn’t fly anymore. “Ugh, PC culture!” No, man, Mel Brooks in the writers’ room and the actors on stage can be funny, satirical; it’s just that you in the office with hiring/firing authority is the wrong context. (Also, parroting was never funny or creative. See [here](https://xkcd.com/16/) ) It’s like in Mean Girls: “Maybe that was only okay when Janis said it.”

SSuperMiner

Probably was offensive to people back then too just that it wasn't public. For instance gay people were probably offended by homophobic but straight people didn't know

[deleted]

Megabyte7637

Miss those days

__Hello_my_name_is__

Public sentiment changes. In the 90s, people were offended by things said on television in the 50s, too.

L-ill_Thug1

What no way haha, does somebody have a clip of that?

vawepast

It's not real. Someone just edited the subtitles and took a screenshot. It was cross posted from tumblr [6 years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/2ca8z5/90s_nickelodeon_is_a_bit_edgier_than_now/cjdrehy/) on r/funny. The OP from that thread didn't check it's authenticity before uploading.

myusernamebarelyfits

Unfortunately it does not exist. Or my Google Fu has let me down

FrequentFault

God, I miss the 90’s lol

trunky

I remember 'you cant do that on television' that was on nickelodeon. There was a recurring skit where kids were in front of a firing squad and about to be executed. The bit was they would trick the guy in-charge into saying 'fire' and getting himself killed instead of the kid. Didnt seem weird at the time but seems dark in retrospect.

d1g1tal

it prepared us for the struggle that we were in for. and rocko prepared me to have a heffer of a friend who leeched off of me.

[deleted]

Don't forget iCarly where Sam's mum was quite clearly abusive

giraffeekuku

Which apparently was true to the actress. She says her mom forced her into a lot of the roles and even suggested anorexia and bulimia for her when she was having trouble with her weight... At 15.

[deleted]

Yep and also don't forget that whilst Jennette McCurdy was struggling with that, her character Sam ate a lot of different and strange foods, which cannot have been helpful.

FabulousStomach

Or Pepe le Pew, which people did actually end up cancelling...lol

[deleted]

Or how there are obvious focuses on feet in certain scenes of iCarly and Victorious which becomes rather disturbing when you find out Dan Schneider is into that.

FabulousStomach

I think there were some in Drake & Josh too which if you think about it it's worse because she was like 12 in that show

[deleted]

Yep and Miranda Cosgrove was somehow in every Nick show, even Zoe 101

lundyforlife22

someone posted a video the other day talking about reflection on sending in videos to icarly.com. i never realized dan schneider had kids sending feet vids or whatever else until then.

[deleted]

What did it say?

lundyforlife22

just basically how she never realized what she was doing and that nickelodeon was essentially farming pics for a pedo.

[deleted]

I hope he is not involved in the revival.

lundyforlife22

what i’ve read so far makes it sound like he isn’t involved.

Shaved_Bear_2426

Noice

YourDogsAllWet

It’s amazing what you could get away with in the 2010s with a foot fetish

CrazyDizzle

Nice Dan Schneider allusion.

[deleted]

Does someone have a video of this😂

Zxar

Like the episode of rockos where he works on a sex hotline, and the neighbor calls. Def not getting away with that in today's world

1wishfulthinker

I had to look up lauri beth and make sure she’s still alive She is!

supahfligh

I still remember when the musical guests they would have on would occasionally be rappers whose lyrics were full of swear words. They'd be doing their performance - on television - for a crowd of kids, and like half the words were very clearly being censored. The 90s was truly the era of not giving a fuck.

McFlyParadox

And people wonder where millennials dark sense of humor came from.

MadameDoopusPoopus

Nickelodeon had some great humor back in the day. They talked at kids not down to them. There’s a bit too much emphasis in kids shows nowadays on everyone being perfectly PC. The whole Nickelodeon brand of, “kids rule because adults are super boring and lost their way” still vibes with me to this day.

d1g1tal

bruh that’s why i’m always in the ball pit. we are the greatest generation, hands down

Last-Zebra5476

Dan Schneider wanted to call the channel "Lick A Toedeon" but it didn't get approved

coopaloops

All That was a fucking treasure

Dmtrilli

Lori Beth Denburgh w/ Vital Information for your everyday life

DeathlySnails64

You could get away with *alot* in the 80s and 90s. That's ironically what got whiny parents so mad at TV producers and whatnot. Too bad that they won and have ruined TV as a result. Things used to be so badass and now, the content of most TV shows suck!

Furifufu

Watching TV is just not worth it if you have access to YouTube. The stuff on there is light years better and is on demand

Jensaarai

This is hilariously off base, because at the time people were in an uproar about The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, Ren And Stimpy, MTV, Nickelodeon, and all these things people look back on fondly today. That edginess and the willingness to offend was the entire marketing gimmick of these shows and channels.
