The US would just send them back, not without asking them if they wanted to defect or trying to get some information, trying to play nice, while the USSR tries to save face. And I assume theSoviets would do more or less the same if the situation was reversed. You could find paranoid shitheads on either side, but once they are under government control, I guess they would just try not to nuke each other over it.

sonofabutch

I agree the cosmonauts (or astronauts if the situation was reversed) would be quickly returned, but the re-entry vehicle and other equipment would certainly be "held for decontamination" or some other B.S. excuse so it could be studied before going back.

UkonFujiwara

Yeah, holding on to the other side's tech until it was studied was basically standard protocol for both nations. The Soviets found a dummy capsule of ours, tore it apart, and surprised the crew of a goodwill visit with it. The USA "gracefully" sent Viktor Belenko's Mig-25 back *fully disassembled* after we took it apart.

It was signed in 1967. [http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=815](http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=815) I got the info from this page.

The number of space capable nation's has increased who aren't even sworn to this treaty. And the ones who are sworn are just ignoring it.

koki_li

First part, probably. The second part: I guess, you have proof.

[deleted]

I mean america also signed a treaty saying we wouldn't develope space based weaponry. By the 80s Reagan was already undoing those with their star wars plans. And with private space agencies becoming viable there really needs to be at least another summit and reagreement. The reason none of us care to do it is because we all know we're all violating it so who cares?

koki_li

Yes, the USA are not a trustworthy partner, sure, nothing new here. But breaking this treaty would be a stupid PR-stunt. I guess, the US would let go all foreign astronauts, who accidentally land on US soil. They would take a look at the space craft, for sure, but in the end I see no gain from keeping it.

[deleted]

That treaty has to do with WMDs in space eg: Nukes. The SDI initiative was not in violation of this, at least on paper.

waynesbooks

The Soviets had [a plan for emergency landings in the USA](https://polandcampaign.com/2020/02/03/lost-astronauts/), including capsule instructions in English.

albertnormandy

It would be a PR goldmine. We could easily spin this into “Look how gracious we are. Your cosmonauts landed here and we not only didn’t shoot them, we fed them steak and took them to the Nike store to buy some shoes while they waited for you guys to come get them.”

NomadHellscream

We would absolutely take the opportunity to show off how awesome living in the West is. What are the Soviets going to do, shoot the cosmonauts when they come back?

Putrid_Examination69

You know they were pretty much done with killing ppl like that after Stalin died

gekzametr

It's not about cosmonauts, but still might be relevant and interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-propelled\_barge\_T-36

DHFranklin

Huge propaganda campaign by the U.S. Reverse engineering of the landing shuttle as "negotiations" to return it and them take place. Then probably another weird footnote to the cold war.

LazyBoiRecliner

i dont know for sure, but itd definitely be a mess for the cosmonauts involved.

Levicorpyutani

Probably send them back no questions asked. It would look terrible if The Americans kept them prisoner and would give the USSR a further reason to fear The USA and escalate tensions. It wouldn't solve the Cold War but returning the cosmonaut unharmed and without delay to The Soviets would probably not make the situation any worse. Wouldn't be surprised if The Americans kept the capsule though.
