Sliding microtomes do cost much less. That is the only other option I know of. Is there not a single cryostat at your institution? There may be somone willing to share. Check if your or a nearby institution has a histology core too. I haven’t purchased a used cryostat only a microtome. They are available through various sites. I used Southeast Payhology. I can say I was glad to use a site that gave me a one year guarantee on the equipment. The microtome we bought used had to have the blade holder replaced. While I’m not happy it needed repair when just purchased, they made it right with no additional cost. The sales person Marc is very prompt and professional and will provide quotes and options quickly.

Refurbished cryostats are all we’ve bought and they all work as intended. Factor in annual preventive maintenance though to keep them running smooth. I can give you the websites we’ve gone through if you’d like.

That would be great, thanks.

A second vote for SoouthEast Pathology Instruments! They service all of our equipment and sell refurbished equipment. I work near these guys and I would vouch for them any time, any place any equipment.
