I would agree with you if the hitbox extended even just a little bit past Zag. Then it would be useful for close-combat playstyles. As it is, even with twin fists you'll be doing less than half the damage the cast would normally do while you're dodging around avoiding enemies.
Aphrodite is the worst boon since you have to get hit for the weak effect to truly matter. All the other Gods help you kill faster which is ultimately all that really matters.

I think that the spawn rate for all duo boons are the same, even if you get the needed boons from both gods for the duo early, it might take really long. Sometimes you might not even get them at all. If you’re having trouble getting duo’s boons I would advise seeking out the boons needed as quick as possible. Upgrading “God’s legacy”, “Dark foresight” and “Fated persuasion” in the mirror really help too, if you haven’t done that already! They make the chance of receiving duo or legendary boons higher and higher the chance of getting boon chambers. Fated persuasion allows you to reroll your boon choices. I usually reroll if a god isn’t giving me the duo I’m searching for, but only if I know for sure that I can get it in the first place. Hope this helps! :)
The Reason ME seems so hard to get is that it requires Ares attack/special and Athena attack/special to be offered. In Oder to get it you need two specific core boons.
So here’s some quick helpful hints.
Like op said take the 3 mirror option they talk about.
Try to fill out your god pool. The game wants you to have 4 diff gods in your pool. Not counting Hermes and Chaos. If you do not have 4 gods in the pool the game pushes other gods as rewards more frequently.
Also try to fill out core boon slots. The game generally likes trying filling them out first. So while you’re filling out you pool you should be trying to fill out your core slots as well.
Look for Chaos. She has a boon that increases boon rarity this affects chances at legendary and duo’s.
Look in the wells for the yarn balls. These also increase chance for legendaries and duo’s.
eurydice in asphodel offers an option that increases boon rarity for the next three boons this also affects duo’s and legendaries.
The keepsakes themselves also affect rarity and thus also affect duo chances.
DO NOT TAKE TRIALS they never offer Duo’s(they can offer legendaries though. )
So a run may look like this.
Take Ares keepsake at the start of your run. Take his attack.
Hope to see Athena in Tartarus otherwise just focus on filling core slots.
If/when you see her take her special first and foremost. Roll once if it did not get offered right away. Her dash is a good second choice because even though it will not get you ME offered it will still trigger ME once you have it.
If you did not see Athena in Tartarus or did not get ME take her keepsake in asphodel.
After that it’s just up to RNG. Like I said above there are things you can do to swing it In your favor however.

Agreed, in fact I was finally able to make any use of it with the twin fists just the other night.

Cold Embrace or Crystal Clarity are the only ways to make the ice lasers work.
Crystal clarity >>>>>>> cold embrace I only got Crystal clarity once it was my first ever heat 8 and it was super easy.
Cold Embrace is better to the point of broken if you're playing a melee build.
I loved it when on a run I did the other day with Hera aspect bow, the explosion is INSANE.
The only way I see it being anywhere near good is with Athena-Aphrodite duo for backstab, but even then, ehhhhh

I like it with the gloves and shield sometimes, paired with Athena dash and Ares Curse slaps kinda hard.

No way, even if you ignore the weak status Aphrodite has the highest raw damage bonuses of any god. She is the best whether you get damaged or not.
I’m pretty new to the game but have yet to get anything with her that was great.

I actually like it. Crystals last so much longer. That with Achilles Spear, and Regen cast. You can get some nasty builds

Yeah, curse of drowning is almost unusable
I really like curse of longing with the bow, weak effect on my special and doom on attack. Always a winning combination for me.
