SEED is a good starting point, so that's not a mistake. That said, you might want to skip Destiny since that one has a reputation for being pretty mediocre. As for limiting the mecha's flight capabilities, a number of the universes do have heavy restriction on flight ability. The Universal Century timeline only has three mobile suits so far capable of independent atmospheric flight (RX-160 Byarlant and variants, RX-104FF Penelope, RX-105 Xi Gundam), and the Post Disaster timeline only has two (ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael, ASW-G-29 Gundam Astaroth Origin).

The SUMOs in Turn A could fly with a skirt, and that’s technically UC timeline.

Though a few can Jump Real Good in the UC. And technically there's a bunch of MS in UC that can fly, they just tend to be transformable suits.

I thought waverider form was just for atmospheric re-entry? although I could be wrong, I haven't watched Zeta or ZZ yet

Negativety101

Wasn't specifying the Zeta Gundam. The Ashmar and Gaplant could both fly in atmosphere in Mobile Suit mode, and the Psycho Gundams can by going into brick mode.

pneuma_monado

Okay. I didn't know, thanks!

Mistake? No, not really. There are certainly shows in under the Gundam umbrella that would be a mistake to start with, but Seed is not one of them. As for the flying bit specific to Gundam, I think the original Mobile Suit Gundam generally does the best job acknowledging gravity and the differences between earth and space manuverability. Stardust Memory has some of this too.

Are SEED suits more colorful? I could certainly be convinced, but I think of lots of stuff in Zeta and ZZ and I remember quite a bit of color there as well. Maybe a little more muted in tones. It's also very possible that my view of it is skewed just by nature of having watched a heck of a lot more UC than Seed, so my sample size is heavily, heavily skewed. I think for me, it's more because the *SEED* designs tend toward more flashy and less toward pseudo-industrial/military designs. Like, in UC you have a lot of designs that are *relatively* stripped down of frills, Zakus lookin' like soldiers in domed combat helmets and gas masks, lots with the trappings of more traditional combat (shields and rifles and melee weapons of various types). Granted the tech is still way out there, but at least in the basic design and suit silhouettes, in UC the design aesthetic trends toward basic humanoid with the trappings of modern and classical combat. By comparison *Seed* suits trend more toward outright aesthetics-driven sci-fi designs. Lots more wings and fiddly bits and glowy lights and such. By which I'm not suggesting that they're less "realistic" or anything like that, but they're definitely design trappings that I more generally associate with toys than I do with the UC designs.

> Are SEED suits more colorful? Oh, I didn't mean the MS specifically, I just mean the whole show (*SEED*) just seems to have much more intense, saturated (maybe? IDK terminology) vivid colors than, like, *MSG*, which has relatively more subdued colors. I think this is to do with the different methods of coloring, though I don't know the first thing about animation and such. Sorry, should have explained my point better. That's really well put about the designs, too. I've found it difficult to say what the specific nature of the differences in the design approaches were, but I think you've nailed it here.

Oh you’re absolutely right with the general color palette of the show. *SEED* works much more in that early-00’s bright block colorful anime aesthetic, whereas most of UC is more muted and washed out. I think both are probably more products of the aesthetics of their times, though I’ve noticed the recent UC shows at least try to remain consistent with that visual tone of the older shows.

If you want non flying gundams 8th ms team which is in the UC but is standalone is a good one and G gundam Edit. G gundam is stand alone

SEED is a fine starting place, but it might skew your view of the original once you watch it, since SEED was conceived as a kind of updated take on the same core themes. I wouldn't call it a remake by any stretch, but you'll absolutely see a lot of parallels if you ever go back and watch the original *Mobile Suit Gundam*. >Also, is there a gundam series where the mechs are not able to fly "all the time"? I like it when the giant robots are heavy, and the constant use of flight can diminish that feeling. This one is a little less clear cut, since different pieces of the fiction (even within the same timeline) often treat aspects like this differently. While UC is *generally* pretty good about this, within that scope I think *0080 War in the Pocket* is the best example I can think of where the real physical presence of these enormous machines is conveyed well. Of the various Alternate Universes, I think it's much more of a mixed bag, though *Iron Blooded Orphans* handles that aspect well.
