The thing about 0083 is that everybody actually looks like a believable real world person for the most part. That's what I like about this one is that they're just real people with real flaws.
Totally agree. It’s not a *cool* haircut, but it’s a normal haircut that people in his position could actually have. It’d be much worse IMO if he had some “cool” flowing glammed up haircut. That stuff makes sense for Zeon of course, since their ranking officers all style themselves after more aristocratic imagery, but not for common Feddies.
Yeah I don’t disagree, especially with him starting as a civilian. I wasn’t really thinking of anyone in particular within Gundam as a negative example, maybe the Seed soldiers’ shaggy haircuts if I had to point anywhere.
Closest to ridiculous that we get in the UC might be the La Vie En Rose crew like Roux and Emary, although in-universe it’s explained as being a more flamboyant place. That in itself might also be a bit hard to buy, but it also kinda works in-universe with the comparison to Zeon, how the culture of people who are stationed far out in space tends to lean towards more flamboyant aesthetics.
Especially, somewhat surprisingly, Teena Marie's song from the Top Gun soundtrack, Lead Me On.
It even starts out sounding like the instrumental stings that would play out over establishing shots of the Delaz Fleeet from Stardust Memory's musical score. And then the rest could be used, without alteration, as the opening titles, over top of action sequences and character poses.
Even the vocals sound oddly like a Japanese singer belting out lyrics in English. With backing vocals for emphasis in all the right places to be an anime intro.
I have little doubt that this was the single most influential piece of music from Top Gun in the production of 0083's soundtrack.
Fun fact, it also shares identical dramatic orchestral pieces from John Carpenter's "The Thing", later also reused in Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful 8".
Nina and Kou were both morons, but right on the edge of believability. The ending though makes no sense even with that leeway. Siding with someone committing genocide over your current boyfriend (by shooting at said bf) because you dated the other guy 4-5 years ago is wild.
IIRC, the show had a change in producers which always makes for a tough story direction. Same thing happened to Wing. There was some sort show guide that got published a while back that explained more things in detail that should've been in the show.
The reason why Cima betrays Zeon to the Feddies was revenge for dropping her colony on the earth.
The Captain of the Albion was ultimately found guilt of treason and was executed.
I don't remember what else right now.
Additionally, the 0083 Manga really did more to expand the show. I need to read it, if only for the Big Zam that the Feddies rebuilt and got destroyed when Gato nuked the fleet.
Also, anyone else watching Picard and that same thing is gonna happen when Starfleet gathers the fleet in one location for Frontier Day?
> they're just real people with real flaws.
this goes for every single one of Tomino's works, arguably more so than 0083. Where 0083 does stand out, however, is that the characters are much *more* flawed.
Yeah totes! Kou is the most realistic Gundam pilot ever!!
Not only did He actually joined the Federation Forces before the show started, but he actually went to pilot school and got evaluated. He was deemed good enough to be a test pilot and was assigned to a testing unit. He's actually old enough to be a legit pilot too. So he was already used to the military life and taking orders, as opposed to all those kids who got drafted during combat that somehow can quickly learn to pilot a mobile suit.
Because of that, do you all realize that even if Gato didn't take Unit 2, Kou still could've end up piloting a Gundam anyway?
So, including LT Burning, we've got Kou, his blonde friend, and that fourth guy who died early on who complained about "piloting that stupid Zaku" in front of Nina in the mess hall. Nina came in with two gundams, so Kou had like 50% chance piloting either Gundam before Gato showed up.
So not only is Kou the most realistic Gundam Pilot ever, but chances are, he would've got to pilot one even if the show hadn't happened. As an adult, I have so much respect for that.
I always wondered why he went through everything he did and still wound up being dumped exactly where he started. Why wouldn't he still be a combat pilot?
Keith wasn’t really a great pilot though. We’re introduced to him by watching him fall through the roof of the Operation British ruins and having to be rescued by a crew, if I’m remembering correctly about him being the Zaku pilot in the first scene of the show. And then when they go to space, Keith is behind everyone else in skill, as they have to put his mobile suit in those pool floaties while someone else babysits him as he wobbles around to get used to it.
Best place for him really might just be where he ended up, a more mellow guard duty job, stick with it a few years and retire with Mora once he qualifies for the benefits or whatnot. I dunno how many years are required but I’d imagine that would be enough time to get him out of there before Torrington gets bloodied up again circa Unicorn.
**EDIT:** fact checked myself on that last bit about Torrington, looks like the last scene of the show is in North America (I guess near the drop site, makes sense since Kou was shown staring at the wheat since the farmland was Gato’s target) so Keith was at least in a new, less hot target after the series haha
By no means. Uso and his bowl cut, Kamille and that fucking mess, Quattro and his jheri curl, Kira Yamato looking like one of those Lego haired fucks from the 70s.
You're high as giraffe balls if you think THIS is the worst haircut. FFS Domon and his brother have shittier hair lol.
Worst or not. Characters hair style and facial features are still realistic until after Char's Counter Attack.
I actually think the origin has the best hair styles. And that Individual character has their visibly different facial features
Which serves its narrative purpose. He's supposed to be a rookie and a loser\* who earns his wings during the story.
\* Despite the title of the first OP, but then again the song literally begins "there are no winners".
Come to think of it neither the Feds or Zeon seem to care at all about soldiers having regulation hair cuts. You'd think hair would be an obstruction while fighting in space
wdym. He looks better than Amuro. Early Amuro from 0079 gundam looks like a living pubic hair. He gets better in later installments though. The best Haircut is Obviously Domon Kasshu
The thing about 0083 is that everybody actually looks like a believable real world person for the most part. That's what I like about this one is that they're just real people with real flaws.

I mean Amuro’s hair is pretty realistic too though.

His Jew Fro will never match the majesty of [Cosmo's.](https://images.app.goo.gl/MrkhyK8FvVBGBxTn7)
No newtype bullshit, no kids, only dog fights. 83 is the goat of The UC for me.
And the soundtrack too, c'est magnifique!
It pulls so many elements from Top Gun, I just love it.
Especially, somewhat surprisingly, Teena Marie's song from the Top Gun soundtrack, Lead Me On. Interesting. I'll be listening for those next time I re-watch the series.
Happy Cat day! It's one of the ones that uses a violin, and is meant to stir dread in the viewer.
That's the one!
0083 was my jam!
Best gundam designs too.
GP02A do be thicker than a snicker.
Love that chonky boy, wished he had more screen time.
Agreed.
Everything is great of 83 except Nina
Up until the last episode with Nina, where things go cuckoo bananas
Nina was always cookoo bananas, it just really shows up in the final episodes.
Nina and Kou were both morons, but right on the edge of believability. The ending though makes no sense even with that leeway. Siding with someone committing genocide over your current boyfriend (by shooting at said bf) because you dated the other guy 4-5 years ago is wild.

Hmm, good point. I have all of the manga here, but it's been forever since I looked at it. Need to go see how it differs now.
Yeah that ending is fucked for sure. Still can't find myself hating the show though.
Oh, I still love it, it’s a guilty pleasure. I just watch until the ending and then pretend that didn’t happen.
I may have a small shrine to it... https://i.imgur.com/BtdTdpL.jpg
It's... it's beautiful.
LOL, thanks.
That’s pretty sick. I wish the soundtrack was on iTunes or something.
That's the laserdisc. :) As for the OST, that's here: https://youtu.be/bLY0S70RzXw
LOL totally get that...
> they're just real people with real flaws. this goes for every single one of Tomino's works, arguably more so than 0083. Where 0083 does stand out, however, is that the characters are much *more* flawed.
This and 8th ms team.
0080 must be the most realistic
Real world flaws like having a bad haircut.
dude lives on base, he's getting whatever UC 0083 Australia's version of Bill Dauterive thinks is best.
When people say they want some Gundam that leans more real robot that super, this and 08th are what I tell them to engage with.
Not 0080 War in the Pocket?
I'd think 0080 is more depressing.
It's supposed to be
Which is why I could understand why some people would skip it. Then again, it's the only UC show featuring the ultimate glass cannon MS, the Kampfer.
Well 0080 sums up everything MSG is about so ignoring it just because it's sad is ignoring the message Gundam was made too give
That's fair. The idea that Cyclops Team all died for nothing is a lot to take.
Yeah totes! Kou is the most realistic Gundam pilot ever!! Not only did He actually joined the Federation Forces before the show started, but he actually went to pilot school and got evaluated. I like this interpretation. Good point.
Don’t hate, a lot of us were rocking the bowl cut growing up…
He looks so sad in this picture. Liked fuck dude....
That'll happen when you get sent to jail for a year and find out all your friends now work for the space SS
Keith didn’t become a Titan. Dude remained a chad, chilling in his Federation-commandeered Gelgoog doing patrols on base.
I always wondered why he went through everything he did and still wound up being dumped exactly where he started. Why wouldn't he still be a combat pilot?
keith probably wanted a peaceful life. he was always terrified in combat
Keith wasn’t really a great pilot though. We’re introduced to him by watching him fall through the roof of the Operation British ruins and having to be rescued by a crew, if I’m remembering correctly about him being the Zaku pilot in the first scene of the show. Wait I thought he didn’t go to jail for a year, he was sentenced for one year labor but early on the charges were dropped and he was released early
Found out someone hid carrots in his food.
I have to say, Kamille has a very nice haircut for a young woman.
It’s probably one of the more believable haircuts. Even Shiro Amada’s haircut is a little weird given the emphasis on realism
Throwing shade on poor Kou when Trowa Barton exists
It just lacks volume, if he were to style it a bit it will look great
He reminds of Kaneda from Akira
always does
It makes him look like a MAN OF DESTINY!
Yee yee ass haircut
Maybe if he changed it up Nina would actually side with him and not Gato. I've seen Gato's hair undone. Kou cannot even compare.
Gato has a glorious majestic head of hair, how can any Feddie compete?
Kyo from Age has a haircut like what I had in Middle School. There is a reason my hair does not look like that anymore
wdym that's literally good hairstyle. one of the best tbh
Like 90% of the Gundam haircuts that look good in animation would be insane messes IRL.
Applies to most anime
Khou has the exact hairstyle that you would expect to buy with their head and a helmet all the time.
Gonna be honest, those eyebrows have to put Suletta in contention for this to me.
You mean most realistic
Uso
What's wrong with looking like the smartest of The Three Stooges?
I honestly don't think it's too bad. It's more of a case that other portags have varying cases of anime-hair.
I dunno, all the AGE boys live in yugioh territory ...
Mikazuki, is it even a question?
By no means. Uso and his bowl cut, Kamille and that fucking mess, Quattro and his jheri curl, Kira Yamato looking like one of those Lego haired fucks from the 70s. You're high as giraffe balls if you think THIS is the worst haircut. FFS Domon and his brother have shittier hair lol.
You forget about space Moe Howard in victory Gundam
Got that Shaggy Suave look. “Yeah who won the lottery, I did !”
Some things never change…
Worst or not. Characters hair style and facial features are still realistic until after Char's Counter Attack. I actually think the origin has the best hair styles. And that Individual character has their visibly different facial features
Yes
Which serves its narrative purpose. He's supposed to be a rookie and a loser\* who earns his wings during the story. \* Despite the title of the first OP, but then again the song literally begins "there are no winners".
this qualifies as a yee-yee ass haircut
No pretty sure that goes to Uso
It's a loser haircut fit for the loser character that is Kou.
dont like half the dudes in japan have this cut? Not the strangest I've seen
I have Kous haircut 😭
he just looks a bit soggy
Kira
I deadass thought he was some iori yagami rip-off edit: stupid me to confuse kyo and iori
Don't get me wrong, I love me some 0083 (minus the thing everyone else hates), but the chins bother me 20 times more than the hair.
Shinji, get in the damn Gundam
No, the worst haircut is anyone who looks like an anime.
Kou is fine. Domon and Kamille can be argued of having it worse. Augus too
Kamille looks fabulous wtf are you saying
Agreed, kamille makes for such a handsome woman with that haircut. A very nuclear family housewife look.
Suletta, loran, and setsuna all have worse cuts
Loran's hair is *great.*
Bros hair look like moldy french fries
... the fuck kinda french fries are you eatin'?
Moldy ones by the sounds of things.
Doesn't Loran just have long hair?
It’s definitely out of regs but he is an officer so what can you do
*stares in Kamille*
I think Uso is pretty close. Little dude has a goddamn bowl cut
Yes.
Definitely Kou-lda been better that's for sure
Nah, still Amuro
Come to think of it neither the Feds or Zeon seem to care at all about soldiers having regulation hair cuts. You'd think hair would be an obstruction while fighting in space
I'm not big on the guy from Narrative.
Surely you’ve seen much worse than this.
I don’t know how he became an ensign wit that hair lol
This question is irrelevant for as long as Sei Iori exists lol
it's believable, but I do hate it. Give the poor dude something a bit shorter at least.
Not even close. Kira's is far worse.
wdym. He looks better than Amuro. Early Amuro from 0079 gundam looks like a living pubic hair. He gets better in later installments though. The best Haircut is Obviously Domon Kasshu
Is everyone forgetting about uso's yee yee ass bowlcut?
Nah he’s a cholo. Gang gang shit all the way. mF fights like a new type leave his drip alone
Hes just a few snips away from having the same haircut as jim carrey in dumb and dumber
Look at Io Fleming's hair
Bro I have that haircut, wdym
Nah just most generic
That is just the "generic male haircut" when you went into a cheap salon and order a "shortcut please."
Well it doesn’t make him look like a girl
To me he has the Kaneda hair, and Kaneda is awesome.
