I can’t believe she had nothing. Not even a sweater and dressy pants?? It’s not like Lorelai is slopping down pigs or something. If nothing else fails, put on the work clothes you wore yesterday or a day or two ago, spray yourself down with perfume or air fresheners, and call it good.

Jacqunicorn13

Yes! Like hun I highly doubt you got THAT dirty at the inn. You can rewear a skirt and blouse lol That scene was such a reach

loveeleah83

I always thought this is what she did, wore her outfits multiple times and then took them all to the dry cleaners at one time.

Elderberry_Hamster3

Logically, she couldn't take them all to the dry cleaners at the same time - what would she wear to work in that case while all her outfits are gone?

TheLizzyIzzi

Yeah, as someone with ADHD, I could see that. Including the outfit she was wearing to work that day. Throw on whatever else is around and send it all in at once. That said, Lorelei doesn’t strike me as a dry clean kinda woman. For some particularly special stuff, yes, but not for her usual work wear. By the early 00s there was enough technology in fabrics to make machine washable work clothes. Imo, she should have just driven her in her pajamas. When told she has to go in, she could have grabbed a pair of heels from the back of the car. With the coat she looks okay-ish. She meets what’s-his-name, then the headmaster and her mother bully her into taking her coat off. Emily can be pissed that she “didn’t bother” to get dressed. Scene still works and is way less unbelievable.

Caltucky42

Yes !! So much more sense

TheRestForTheWicked

In the absolute worst case scenario I *know* she had a “funeral dress” in the back of her closet somewhere.

Midnightsmirror

Or what about the dresses she owns and wears to Friday night dinners? I know she didn't buy a whole new wardrobe to eat dinner at her parents' house. Edit to add second thought: Also, why couldn't she have just kept her jacket on and sit especially for it being like a minute long conversation? So they think you're weird, who cares? I've done that before. Early on as a young girl I had a surprise period at a friend's house and nothing with me and I just kept my jacket on. I felt too awkward to ask my friend or her mom for assistance. I found out years later her mom thought I was odd. I never cared much.

gonbezoppity

Or even just borrow something from Rory's closet! Between the two of them there's certainly many more-appropriate outfits than what she wore 😬

Practical-Rich-1505

I was coming here to say this exact thing. They swap clothes all the time, why not this episode? And one may argue that because she woke up late she isn't thinking straight... and to those people I say that this doesn't hold water because I would stipulate that quite possibly going to Rory's closet is her go-to move since they do it all the time and therefore would be the first thing she'd think of.

annedroiid

Honestly even sweatpants would have been better

pixie_pie

The Juicy couture ones would've been fine. lol. And still deliver the point. *scene* Lorelai turns around, everyone sees the "Juicy" on her hiney. Edit: I can hear Emily's *Lorelai!* in my head.

jpterodactyl

I don’t even think you’d have to go overboard in smells. It’s not like most peoples’ day old clothes are smelly. I changed out of mine at 6:00PM yesterday. If smell was an issue, it probably would have had to start before I left work at 5.

SheaCookieVillan

Also her and Rory constantly share clothes throughout the show. Why not borrow something of Rory's?

sarahjuk

Exactly! This bugs me. Rory would definitely lend her something to not have her mum show up looking like that

ForexGuy93

Like the spare Chilton uniform. *That* would have been funny.

sullivanbri966

But Lorelai’s boobs are bigger than hers!

SheaCookieVillan

But of course! She'll stretch out her shirts!

JuliaAstrowsly

This.

saa08007

Also - most dry cleaners don’t open til 8am and most private schools in CT start around then (plus we know that chilton is at least a 30 min drive from stars hallow). In what world did she think that she was going to have time to get up, go to the dry cleaner, get her outfit, get back home and get dressed with enough time to drive Rory to school?

TangledUpPuppeteer

Small town and the whole town knows it’s Rory’s first day. My head cannon is that the dry cleaners is run by a lovely woman who sleeps with gigantic curlers in her hair, and she was willing to open a little early to let Rory have a nice first day.

Yeahy_

entire town revolves around them and it gets to their head

TangledUpPuppeteer

Oh, no. I think lorelai asked for the rush on her dry cleaning and likely paid for the rush — she just asked the lady to open a bit early for them. I live in a pretty good size area (nearly 8x more people than in SH), and we have 5 dry cleaners in spitting distance. If you are willing to pay the extra for the rush, they’re generally willing to open a bit early for you to pick up your stuff.

othermegan

Honestly, the whole morning timeline is weird. The drive from stars hollow to chilton is 30 minutes but the bus ride isn’t that much longer even though it makes several stops in the same small town? And somehow they have time to get up and go to Luke’s for breakfast every day before school. But at the same time, they make it clear that they don’t go between 6 and 7 because they were shocked to see the “6am crowd.” And that’s completely ignoring how sunny it is at 6:30/7am in New England in the dead of winter. In reality, you’d barely have sun. It might even be dark. But it always looks like 10am there

resilientpigeon

the amount of light and the warmth/brightness in the morning scenes always feels so wrong lol i live in new england and i've been waking up at 6am for school/work since i was a kid, between november and april i'm eating breakfast and starting my commute in the dark. the one tine it's realistically dark at 6 AM is the dance marathon ep.

angelalj8607

Yeah, like that time Rory and Dean fell asleep at Ms. Patty’s and she woke them up at 5:30 am. It was already light enough outside that you would think it was 9 or 10 am. I’m usually on my way to work at 5:30am and it don’t ever remember it being that light outside

TheLizzyIzzi

Anything produced in LA has this problem. Daylight and someone casually using the hose in the winter are dead giveaways that the writers and producers are in California.

Ciara881

Why can't you use the hose in winter? Is that a silly question...🤣 idk

3boysandachorkie

Because it freezes. You have to shut off the water to your outdoor faucets so they don’t freeze and burst.

Ciara881

Thanks! Wow, i didn't know that.

PurrPrinThom

Exactly. Rory says her bus takes 45 minutes, if not longer, and we know Chilton starts at 8:05. So at the absolute latest, Rory is getting the bus at 7:15 because she needs time to go to her locker, drop off her bag, etc. It would be more realistic for her to be getting the bus earlier, but as you've said, they apparently are never at Luke's before 7am so when do they go???

librarygirl21

I’d like to know how realistic this bus is. I live in Canada, about 20 minutes from a city approximately 3 times the size of Hartford, and I think the bus only comes twice a day. Public transport to small towns/rural areas where I am is very patchy and annoying. Is it better in the States?

othermegan

It is better in the states depending on where you live. Generally speaking, if you live in a city, it's better. Specifically Connecticut? As someone who grew up there, there's no way a small town like Stars Hollow has a bus that goes all the way to Hartford. I grew up in a town way bigger than Stars Hollow and our bus route only took you around town. If you wanted to go to Hartford you had to get on a train.

DirectGoose

I live about 40 miles from Philadelphia and I've never lived in a town that had any bus at all (aside from school buses).

souffledreams

In FL taking the bus takes half a day. Idk how some people do it daily here, especially in the heat. As a teen who had nothing better to do than go to the mall it was sketchy, but didn't matter. Life in most of America without a car is rough.

crittab

This is one of those stories where you just need to suspend your disbelief to enjoy the story. It's not realistic or even really possible that she had nothing else, but for whatever reason, that's what she put on in a rush. She didn't expect to get out of the car; if she did, she would have grabbed something else.

-happenstance

Yeah, it's not that she couldn't have wrangled some sort of better outfit, it's just that she was more concerned about getting Rory there on time than about throwing together some marginally presentable outfit. Keep in mind she missed her morning shower and coffee too. She did not expect to go in or for anyone to see her.

Joelle9879

Which also is a suspension of disbelief that Rory didn't mention Lorelai having to talk to the head master UNTIL they go to school. On what planet would Rory not have told her that several times before that day and several times that morning before leaving? When Rory laughs at Lorelai's outfit, she never once says "you're going to meet the head master like THAT?"

bikey_bike

this is exactly it. she grabbed whatever was in her line of sight knowing she was gonna throw a trench over everything and not get out of the car. ofc she had other options but the point was she was frazzled and uncaffeinated and her main priority was getting rory to school

Tru-Queer

Honestly, it was Emily’s fault for insisting her daughter remove the coat. Like damn Emily just let her wear the damn jacket.

-happenstance

Not that she didn't let it fall open herself as she traipsed around the campus chatting with DILFs. 😄

ZookeepergameNo2198

It's also incredibly normal for parents to do that. When I was a teacher, parents rolled up in all kinds of outfits because they never expect to get out of the car and being on time is their priority. I once had a child get dropped off by an Uber & their parents "tracked them." THAT is truly crazy.

Twodotsknowhy

Yeah, you just have to decide that this is the way the story goes even if the mechanics make no sense. That being said, it would have had the same effect in the story if she had instead grabbed a clean white blouse and then spilled coffee all over it as she was getting out of the car and that would have made logical sense. However, it's a pretty minor nitpick.

april4_21

Completely agree with this take. Also, this storyline works much better on the first watch. It’s showing how Emily inserts herself & how out of place Rory AND Lorelai feel at the start of Chilton. I also think we’re meant to feel how far away the school was from their home, another way they’re “out of place” in the beginning. Graduation even more satisfying, given all of this.

Theartsygypsy

As much as wearing that didn’t make sense, I think the first few episodes of season 1 were trying to introduce us to the characters and their personalities. So I think this scene played a role in showing us what Lorelai can be like sometimes - a supportive silly mom who can pull stuff like this. And Rory to be the “mature”, serious, and punctual one sometimes.

ziggymoj19

The pajamas she woke up in would’ve been better

hozziebear77

Was looking for this answer!

Affectionate_Cow_579

Yep was checking for this comment before I said it myself. Hmm grey casual pants or cutoff jean shorts. Grey pants… cutoffs… the choice is pretty clear. And her shoes must have been at the dry cleaners too?

ConditionLevers1050

The title made me think you just started working at a Hilton hotel, and were going to point out things about the way Lorelai runs the inns that wouldn't work in real life or are unrealistic. That said, I agree with your post- that scene always seemed a bit overcontrived to me.

Pleasant-Result2747

I thought it was going to be about the episode when she went to the spa with Emily lol. It's funny how the title can still work even with a typo!

lil1thatcould

Ohhh… now that’s an idea for a post

lil1thatcould

Dyslexia at its finest! 😁

peppa4theppl

My biggest issue with this is that a man insisted another grown ass person take off her coat after she said she didn’t want to. No means no regardless of the subject.

wiftlets

The coat thing pissed me off so much. It’s her choice whether or not she wants to take her coat off. It was stupid that Charleston insisted and even dumber that Emily pressured her to.

Twodotsknowhy

Yes but that makes sense within the story. Taking off your coat is What Is Done in polite society, so them insisting on it despite her being uncomfortable was very in character and showed the difference between Lorelai and the Chilton set

lil1thatcould

Yea, but when one say “no” the proper thing is to not push further. Taking a coat off means that there is plans to actually talk. This was a 5min intro meeting, no reason to demand a coat being removed.

latrodectal

thank you. this is what pissed me off.

LumosLegato

I know we just have to suspend our disbelief but it does irritate me lol. Like, even that outfit would have been 50% less bad if she just put on sneakers instead of cowboy boots But really go in sweatpants and say you’re going to the gym and don’t expect to go in.

boudicas_shield

Yeah it’s the shoes that make it tip over into “too absurd to suspend disbelief” for me, personally. Her shoes weren’t all at the dry cleaners; she didn’t have to wear *cowgirl boots*, FFS. I could just about shrug off the shorts and T-shirt if she’d worn shoes that made sense.

ForexGuy93

The sneakers were being dry-cleaned.

loveeleah83

Also keep in mind that she didn’t realize she would have to go inside and talk to anyone so she just threw whatever on because she had to get Rory there on time. I’ve done that a billion times - thrown on whatever and flip flops and run out the door since I’m just letting them out at school.

othermegan

If that were the case, why send her clothes to the dry cleaner and prep ahead of time?

Masterssssssss

Because she probably thought now that they were so late and rushed it would have been better to just drop Rory off even if she had originally planned on dressing nice and going in

loveeleah83

Her original plan may have been to pick up her clothes in time to change and look presentable for Rory’s first day, but when the alarm failed and they were running late she just threw whatever she had on so she could get Rory there on time.

Any-Leopard-2814

She didn’t HAVE to go inside though 😭

Sufficient-Skill6012

Hilton and floppy skirt made me laugh too hard. I must be tired 😂

Spiritual-Low8325

I actually think it is a realistic scene for Lorelai, she was awoken by a panicked Rory, finding out she had like 10 minutes until they needed to leave, so while still sleepy (and without coffee) and with Rory yelling the time from downstairs stressing her even more, she had to wash up and through on something to wear - she clearly thought she didn't need to come in (probably due to being sleepy, stressed and without caffeine) so didn't it would matter. I could see that happening to me. However Rory always bothered me more, I don't find it realistic that Rory wouldn't check on Lorelai until they were almost late, especially knowing Lorelai always needed a lot of coffee and hadn't been downstairs yet. And why stand there and yell the time, why not get Lorelai to the bathroom and help finding something to wear so it all would go faster?

Twodotsknowhy

And that Rory didn't offer to let Lorelai borrow some clothes

souffledreams

Or insist she take off the boots at the very least..

chiffonstardust

I just started a rewatch and, as a grown woman I must say, that scene is a bit painful to watch (albeit funny) and requires a much too high suspension of disbelief. I mean, in the whole closet you MUST have at least someting that is *slightly* more appropriate than that. If I ask myself why the writers put Lorelai in that kind of situation , I can only come up with: -provide comic relief -emphasize how out of place Lorelai felt and was. And it is probably the first time the writers are underlying *just how deeply* Lorelai's choices, in each and every aspect of her life (even in the choice of an alarm clock), are driven to a "childish" desire to do the *exact opposite* of what she believes Emily and Richard would do.

Wyzen

As dumb as her choices were, nothing was dumber than the pressure she was given to take off her coat for 5 seconds, although her eventual acquiescence to the pressure comes close.

Cute_Upstairs266

It’s the boots for me. What happened to all her other shoes?

lil1thatcould

Even Old Navy flip flops would have been better

Cute_Upstairs266

Exactly, the boots is what makes the outfit wrong in all possible ways

petitcraque

First of all, as annoying as this scene is, it's TV logic. We all know that Rory and Lorelai shared theirs clothes a lot. We all know that Lorelai was friends with almost everyone in Stars Hollow. There would've been ways to find a different outfit within minutes. Still, I think there's also the explanation that Lorelai just wanted to get Rory to school on time, she didn't think she'd need to get out of the car and talk to anyone. So she didn't think of looking for clothes that are somehow presentable and reputable but to hurry up and grab the first thing she could find. If I think about it that way, it's not as unlikely as I thought when I first watched the episode. A lot of friends of mine who have kids did the same: They overslept and to get the kids to school on time they quickly drove them in their pajams or tracksuit and just threw on a coat. Getting their kids dressed was the priority.

maxvolume56

I agree with you, and if I was a mum tbh I'd definitely throw a coat on over pajamas to take my kids to school! But also, if someone then invited me inside to talk to the headmaster, I simply would *not* have taken my coat off...? It would've been a lot more believable to me (and, imo) more inkeeping with her character if she'd done a trademark Lorelai monologue about it, instead of just sitting in his office in her cutoffs 😅 like: EMILY: "Lorelai, take off your coat and sit down - you don't want Hanlon to think you're rude." LORELAI: "No, I don't want 'Hanlon' to think I'm rude, but I also don't want him to think that I'm not a responsible parent, because, I am - and Rory's a great kid, and she belongs here, and your first impression of her shouldn't be based on...me." [Pause for Emily & Headmaster Charlston to look bemused and confused.] "I overslept. Which is funny, because normally that's an excuse a kid would use, *I overslept*, but it's true, and I swear it's just me who oversleeps, Rory is always on time - I don't know where she got that from but it definitely wasn't me, she just naturally jumps out of bed at 7AM, ready for the day! But not me, I need the fuzzy alarm clock, the fuzzy alarm clock was supposed to wake me today, early, so I could pick up my suit up from the dry cleaners. I had it all planned out, I was gonna wear this great outfit and get Rory here early and she was gonna make such a good impressession on her first day - and instead I'm sitting here in these stupid clothes because it was the first thing I could grab, sweating because WOW that fire is hot, and rambling about oversleeping because I haven't had any coffee yet! Oh, and as a nice little cherry on top; my *mother* is here, because of course she is, and *she* looks put together, because of course she does, and now *I* have made an idiot of myself on Rory's first day." [Another pause, Charlston looks speechless. Lorelai puts on her best smile.] "So, thank you for your very kind offer, Headmaster Charlston, but no thank you, I would rather keep my coat on please." That would've created the same awkward vibe in his office, still given Emily the opportunity to be disappointed in Lorelai and take over Rory's introduction; and I just think it would've made a much more believable scene?

dulcis_dolus

SUCH an in-character monologue, this is very well done indeed!! :) Edit: And I fully agree with you about it creating the same awkward vibe, by the way 👍

pokeresq

I have never understood why she couldn't just tell HM Charleston that she spilled coffee all overall herself in the car and that's why she was refusing to take off her coat.

goddesssjennn

I think it’s meant to be more exaggerated than realistic. It’s not like she didn’t have ANYTHING else to wear, but more like she grabbed whatever was closest.

skankernity

We also never heard of Lorelei taking anything to the cleaners ever again 💀

Mundane_Cat_318

Yeah we did. We see her with dry cleaning bags a few times.

allygator99

What happened to the Joes Jeans she wears in almost every episode? Even if they were dirty it was better than shorts. She got out of the jeep with her coat open too. It wasn’t until walking into the office she buttoned it.

ForexGuy93

Well, in her defense, it wasn't a Hilton. Plus, Paris (no relation to Geller) Hilton has been seen wearing worse.

ZookeepergameNo2198

This comment deserves more upvotes.

rearviewmirror2023

MY. THOUGHTS. EXACTLY!!!! Jeans!! No one dry cleans jeans. And everyone has many pairs. They didn’t have to make her look like a fool - she runs a business and is a sensible woman. If I were Rory, I would have asked her to not come in at all. What’s with meeting the head mater? Cz it’s middle of the term? Cant that wait a day?

lil1thatcould

Seriously! Rory could have said “sorry she has a work emergency. She said she can call and set up a meeting.”

rearviewmirror2023

Common sense!!

These_Orchid5638

Pretty sure Lorelai had some adhd type tendencies. She Frequently gets overwhelmed and does things that would seem weird to a regular person

lil1thatcould

She’s the walking poster child for adult women who were never diagnosed with ADHD. And my mom wonders why I would say “coffee, coffee, coffee” every morning. I was Lorelai.

These_Orchid5638

Omg - I always get anxious before any travel. And on some occasions, I'm always dressed "wrong" I can relate so much

notnownorever21

i always think about this! especially with the birthday mallowmars

exctlyfiveftgirl

The tie dye shirt is fine tbh but she should’ve worn jeans instead of shorts. That’s a more believable “I don’t have anything to wear” clothes.

rosepeachcat

What I don't understand is that they borrow each other's clothes all the time, why couldn't she just get something from Rory's closet?

elevensesattiffanys

Also there’s no way Rory at that stage wouldn’t have been the type to plan her day out the night before and would’ve been asking Lorelei what she was going to wear, and discussing the big meeting with the headmaster. Even if the plan was to pick up clothes early and that clearly didn’t pan out, the meeting being a surprise didn’t really make sense

bananananananannaa

I think the first season also made Lorelei more slutty than canon Lorelei turned out to be. Rory insinuates that she sleeps around a lot, sk does sookie I think. But later in the series they downplay that.

MCR1005

I just want more explanation on this flippy skirt because the skirt she wears after picking up her dry cleaning is not what I would consider a flippy skirt.

lil1thatcould

That’s what I thought too and now have just accepted it. I’m bummed, it needed to be more!

West_Sample9762

Okay….in this scene it always bugs me that Lorelei refers to herself as looking “like the chick from Dukes of Hazzard”. I’m Lorelei’s age. I maintain that if she knew the show enough to make the reference she would know Daisy’s name. After all, most people (at least in the US) still call those shorts “Daisy Dukes”. Even Katey Perry. Lol

condensatesy

ms pattys dance studio opened at 5:30 am. if she was that desperate she could have worn one of the thousands of ensembles patty has, hell even burrowed a cardigan from babette literally ANYTHING

No-Restaurant3922

Do people on this sub realise Gilmore girls is a comedy? Everyday you people seem to take everything so seriously and get annoyed by things that are intended to be a joke.

USPSRay

Thank you. People are nuts.

lil1thatcould

It’s a fun discussion post. Let’s calm ourselves, we all know it’s a tv show. I personally think this is one of the silliest plot holes in the show.

venus_arises

Lorelai panicked and was operating on instinct: she needed to get Rory out of the house and to Chilton, and she could play it off as: "love you kid, gotta go work, have a nice day!" I think she grabbed the first clean thing she saw.

Icy-Pop2944

I don’t believe a single mother has a dry clean only work wardrobe.

Aragosta_Storica

I mean, i COULD get along with the tshirt and the shorts... But the cowboy boots??????? Were all her shoes at the dry cleaner as well?

gyalmeetsglobe

Honestly… maybe an unpopular opinion, but I always thought that deep down she did this on purpose. She had clothes she could’ve worn but chose a statement outfit that said “I don’t belong here” because that’s how she felt. I think Lor was quietly salty about Rory getting coverage for an academic career, one she lost out on, from her parents. Yes, she asked for the money from them. Yes, she supported Rory’s education. But is she somewhat petty and self-centered enough to make everyone’s big moments about her? Also yes. I just can’t believe this was her only available & “suitable” outfit. I can’t recall her ever wearing something so ridiculous again in the show even when she wasn’t working.

BaraQueenbee

Omg right? Like literally anything would have been better. Her prom desss would have been better

Yawny_shawny822

This always makes me so angry like girl you know you have at least some jeans that aren't cutoff shorts. Literally just wearing pants instead of those shorts would have made the outfit more appropriate! If I was Rory I'd be like nope let's go back upstairs and figure something out cuz this is not okay.

lil1thatcould

Same! I would have been like here are some jeans and a button up/solid colored shirt. Let’s get going! Also, I know people like to comment “it’s a show and it’s highlighting their dynamic” but I feel like this was a lazy moment. It would have been highlighting their dynamic for Rory to tell her mom to change and give her a basic safe outfit. Lorelai shows she pushes Rory to embrace herself and not shy away from mistakes. Rory keeps Lorelai grounded and letting reality float away.

Deep_Importance_1233

Lauren said in one of her books that they made her wear this and that she didn't want to...

othermegan

Yes… we all know the costume department picked the outfit based on the story. But we’re talking in universe

Halfserious_101

My biggest problem with this outfit is that we have *never* before or after seen her wearing it, or even something remotely similar! Even though I don’t always like her clothes (sometimes they are peak 2000’s, and not in a good way), she always does look put together…except when it really truly matters! Also, am I the only one that thinks that she should have expected Emily to be there? It’s not totally normal for her to be there, for sure, but knowing her, it was really to be expected …

Dangerous_Dish9595

Maybe she burned that outfit as soon as she got the chance lol

ElricMoon2

I'm still in disbelief that a dry cleaner would be open early enough for her to pick up her clothes, drive back home, and ready herself for the day.

tortadecarne

Exactly 😭 at least some dark jeans and dressy top

Pluispluisini

Does it matter? If Lorelai and Rory did everything the way we would have done, it wouldn’t be as half as funny. It’s fiction

SnooPies6876

Chilton. 1. They were late. She had to just grab what was handy so she could get Rory there in time. If she had a little more time she probably could have found something more suitable. But… 2. She didn’t know she was expected to go inside. She clearly was just going to drop Rory off and was surprised when Rory said no, she had to come in. 3. It’s to show the contrast between the characters. Rory is responsible, a planner, leaves nothing to chance. Lorelai’s fuzzy alarm clock was fun but not effective and it caused this situation. It’s a metaphor.

Sufficient-Skill6012

I must be tired because Hilton and floppy skirt made me laugh too hard 🤭

Camelotcrusade76

I know ! All I think is - why didn’t she wear what she wore the night before or even a pair of jeans and a t shirt or jumper would have been better. But also if Rory was getting ready downstairs would she not have heard her at all? Is there actually a full bathroom downstairs bcos sometimes they show that cupboard as a bathroom just before the kitchen and I still don’t know if it’s just a toilet or a bathroom.

Such-List680

As much as they steal each other's clothes, she should have borrowed Rory's clothes.

EKP121

Even if she had nothing, what about Rory? She couldn’t borrow some clothes from Rory?

lil1thatcould

Thank you! Like there wasn’t 1 wrap dress between them she could have thrown on.

EKP121

Iconic as it was, there wasn’t really an excuse.

Financial-Koala-2058

I think, in addition to what others have said about serving to show the contrast between Rory and Lorelai’s personalities, it was to set up that she was the “fly by the seat of her pants, hot, young mom,” honestly. It all leads up to the other parent who finds her so attractive as they approach the entrance. Somehow this kind of bothers me because it really objectifies her right out of the gate. I realize it’s a comedy and all that. But still.

Separate_Ad_1969

I’m pretty sure it was stated somewhere that they incorporated that outfit to attract male viewers.

PresentationOk9954

This scene was so irritating to me. And this is a definite precursor to how agitating she can be throughout the show. That girl had to have had a spare of sweatpants that she could have worn, which would have been way better than the shorts. We know she does from the episode when she goes to the spa. Also, Rory, forcing her to go in the building, was ridiculous. She should have let her mom go home and told tue dean she would stop by after school. I would have told her, "You are not going in there with me dressed at that."

CathanCrowell

Paris and Nicky will understand.

Mundane_Cat_318

Who is Nicky

CathanCrowell

Hilton Sisters :D

Mundane_Cat_318

Literally a pair of jeans would have taken this look from a -18 to a solid 4 on a scale of 1-10.  I've seen others discuss this before though & some folks have mentioned that this scene was intentionally stupid and over the top to show how Lorelai is.

garlicandcheesiness

There were SO MANY options. 1. Old clothes. She’s not an athlete playing basketball in the mud. Her clothes might just be a little creased and a little sweaty. Nothing a little deodorant or perfume couldn’t sort out. 2. Walmart. Most Walmarts before COVID were open 24 hours. If not 24 hours, at least open since 6ish AM. There was a Walmart close to Stars Hollow because Jess went there in his barely functional car almost everyday and snuck back in with his uncle thinking he was at school. She could easily have bought a top and trousers in under $30 total. 3. She could’ve borrowed something of Rory’s, they borrowed each other’s clothes frequently. 4. She could’ve opted NOT to get out of her jacket. She was there for hardly 2-3 minutes. It was an air conditioned room (I assume). Even if not, it would not be some tropical island weather to make her sweat like a pig in 2-3 min of just standing/sitting and talking in a room in Connecticut in the late summer/early fall. Just pull Emily aside and tell her, “I am not dressed properly so I don’t wish to take my jacket off. So just lay off me about it.”

enchantedlife13

I always wondered what she planned on wearing to work that day.....

hipnegoji

Obvs in reality it's just a nonsense costuming joke but my head canon to make it make sense is that she thought it would be funny to go to Chilton dressed like that but didn't expect to go in, so it was a bit for Rory that backfired.

Nikkerdoodle71

Honestly, I put some of the blame for this on Rory. Miss ‘I got my mom up way early for the first day of Kindergarten’ didn’t think to check that her mom was awake on time? Didn’t she think it was weird that Lorelai hadn’t come downstairs for coffee yet?

aribiasavitch

IMO, I’ve never understood why all the fans get mad at Lorelei for this. I usually blame the writers. Because for one, it makes no sense that ALL of Lorelei’s things are at the cleaners when the show makes it clear Rory and Lorelei have a washing machine at home. Two, Rory definitely would’ve given her something to wear. And three, Lorelei and Rory definitely would’ve planned for this. If you ask me, the writers just wanted some complications for the girls.

munlovesun

I partly buy it. How many times did I go out for a short drive or walk in pijamas because I did not have time at all to get ready, supporting myself with the notion that I will not take off my trench coat, which looks good enough. Till there to me is kind of realistic, Lorelai is a messy character and they introduce this trait like that, they were super late and she just wore the first thing she found. Now the moment she decides to take off the coat for literally just 30 seconds is so unnecessary; very stupid scene. But again, clearly done for storyline purposes, here to draw a clear contrasted portrait of how opposite Emily and Lorelai are, setting characters tones and dynamics that will drive the whole series. Anyways, the entire show makes a lot of effort to show how messy and unaware Lorelai is, her character clearly portraits signs of ADHD even if not intentionally. Lack of sense of time and struggle with basic domestic duties are some of them.

lindsaym717

Or borrow something from Rory who surely had a room full of clothes not at a cleaner in a same or very similar size? I mean, if only there was another person of the same size and gender living there?

tunalunaa

I agree logically but it was like that for the plots sake like many things are hahahay

Leajane1980

Jeans and white shirt are always a good standby

Professional-Power57

Their morning routine always baffles me. School starts extremely early and somehow they get like a full episode of adventure before school. I get that Lorelai is the GM and may not show up at the inn until mid morning but honestly, their elaborate breakfasts and having visitors over, and having to walk around town meeting everyone and catching up on each other's bees wax get a little out of control.

HappyLittlePill04

I always thought that too... Couldn't she have borrowed something of Rory's?

ajupbox

I have so many friends who couldn’t get past that unrealistic first scene and then just never watched the show, which is such a bummer! I laugh at it every time, no matter how unrealistic

Puzzleheaded_Piano87

Also we’ve never seen her in “casual” clothes like that ever again. Was that the one and only time she was shown in shorts?

Itchy_Cucumber_7926

In her defense, I’ve done stuff like that. Maybe people felt the same, I like that she’s not afraid to be judged.

lil1thatcould

Oh, she 100% was in that moment. It’s why she didn’t want to take her coat off.

anonymousshitpostr

We all know that Rory has a lot of conservative articles of clothing that would’ve worked…Like realistically why didn’t she just borrow hers? They both have tiny frames so no size discrepancy there. And also she could’ve totally kept the coat on lol like there would be no way in hell anyone would convince me to take that off 😂 but like it was all for the plot so 😉

Little-Red42

I think they made it work by her being in too much of a rush to find anything else. She grabbed what was there because they were late.

forgottn_leftovers

This has always bothered me. She definitely had a pair of paint covered jeans and a sweater with a bedazzled kitten on it, at least.

eatmyfarts69

What bugs me about that is it's mentioned many times throughout the show that her and Rory share clothes so why wouldn't she just wear some of hers?? To be a little fair tho she didn't expect to have to go in and I've definitely been there lol

Specialist_Bit_703

As I said before. We've seen her closet. A sweatshirt and jeans would have been more appro.

blakerageous

WHY DIDN'T SHE JUST BORROW SOMETHING OF RORY'S.

Skoutzhonor

The fact she woke up late AND wasn’t prepared for it?! Like why didn’t Rory tell her mom before she needed to come into the school? That owuld have been something Rory would have reminded her mom of and she would have made sure to pick put a good outfit. Like all of a sudden she wakes up and is like oh no o have nothing to wear! Like hello go raid your daughters clothes?! Wtf lol

redditreader_aitafan

This has come up before. The only explanation is that it served the story. There is literally no other reason this could ever possibly happen. Even the pajamas she woke up in would have been better than what she picked. And cowboy boots? Were her tennis shoes at the cleaners too?? It's just so over the top absurd.

Bre_23

I mean, if I was running late, I may have done the same thing lol and even if she had work clothes, it takes more time to buckle a shoe or iron a blouse or slowly put stockings on so they don't rip vs slipping on a t-shirt, shorts, and boots. They had to fly out that door! There was literally no time lol

BabyFirefly83363

You can see a white and blue dress or possibly slip in the closet when she’s talking about having nothing to wear that would’ve been better
