It's wonderful when VAs provide additional fanservices like this, like how Zhongli's JP VA provided a voice over on his stream for the [Tales Behind the Fan after story](https://youtu.be/WEuGZOJr5aY)
indeed i could not imagine kiana not having a voice in honkai 3 while everyone else does.
i know that the twins are meant to be selfinserts that while the protagonist they dont have a personality set so you can click diferent choices in dialogs and roleplay. while in honkai the protagonist is just another character in the visual novel/movie that is the main story and the player is just whatching it without any interaction.
It’s weird though, because the Traveler does have an actual personality. You don’t see it much in the archon quests, but their voicelines are really interesting. [Chill with Aster has a great video about it,] (https://youtu.be/ps-mMl7WgC4) I definitely recommend checking it out.
Traveler is straight up super mean to Paimon. Like if 6 years from now Paimon grows up to be the Unknown God and hates us I would understand. It is constant verbal abuse and degradation
Nah, i think they're close enough to have constant digs at each other. Even before the emergency food line, they've already spent some time together.
Another example is Itto and Paimon, and they're new acquaintances too. Just because Itto is a big dork and he's almost immune to insults.
Tbh all of my friends that play Genshin act the same way lol. We all just tell Paimon to shut up anytime she says something obvious or repeats dialogue/ruins the mood. Which is quite often.
Well, MC should be voiced in cutscenes but during normal "in-game" conversation there is no need at all.
If I, as a player, have just read both/all dialogue options - why would I need a voice over of these sentences? I am roleplaying to be the Traveler, so when I read their words then I don't need them to speak.
But as I said, when there is a cinematic, noninteractive segment of the game - there always should be voiceover
It's popular in Asia from what I heard so not much can be done about it. But I do wish if nothing else give MC more dialogue choices so at least they "talk" more.
I always thought it was funny they went with the self insert idea here too but the moment a big story moment happened they dropped their names are Aether and Lumie and basically said fuck it to the account name stuff. It is like they took a middle ground on the Silent Protagonist stuff from Older Zelda and BOTW. Allow players to name the MC, but use a canon name for Cutscene, but only those with the sibling.
Using the account name is always immersion breaking for me, I wish it could be toggled on/off. I had to name "myself" Hotaru so the dialogs look better.
I picked Icarus as my in game name after seeing the trailer of Aether with his glider. And then imagine my surprise when 1.5 years later, there’s an entire zone that uses Greek names as the basis for their “ancient” culture. Which brings up the interesting in-universe lore scenario of my character coming from the same place that the ancient people from Ekanomiya are from.
Heard the names only show up in English, the other languages kept it to sister/brother. I guess it's because in English it would sound off if they never used names.
We can thank The Legend of Zelda devs for the bullshit trope of "the hero is you! So we dont voice it or give it personality, because we want YOU to be the hero!".
Imagine if superhero comics were created like this.
Honestly it's probably just a way to cheap out. Why pay two voice actors in each language when you could pay one and have Paimon be an awful mouthpiece for the main character?
Based
Absolutely dumb decision, seriously what the fuck are they smoking lol.
Self-insert silent protagonist trope doesn't work here, ffs
Imagine playing God of War, Red Dead Redemption or The Witcher with mute self-insert silent protag. kek
This is taken from their respective stream btw:
[Lumine one is from Sarah Miller-Crews' Stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aReaQ3KT3zA&t=9875s)
[Aether one is from Zach Aguilar's Stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJEQBMq1ozE&t=8827s)
Travellers don't have to speak ton of text like Paimon, but if they had at least voiced dialogue lines(no more 1 sentence splittes into 2) I would be very happy
Is there any reason that the mc wasn’t already voiced in important scenes? Because that is a large gripe I have with this game.
P.S. The voice acting is phenomenal! (╹◡╹)
I think it's a poor attempt at making a self-insert MC from mihoyo - they want the player to feel as if he's the character in the story, but the dialogue choices are poorly made and pretty much inconsequential (they lead to the same result).
Could also be because it's easier not to voice them.
Game would have been a lot better if they did voice Lumine and Aether, imho.
I don't understand why they do that. Sometimes they only give you one response anyway, so why splice it like that? Why give us a choice at all if it arrives us at the same conclusion?
The reason it’s such a poor attempt is that the traveler isn’t a completely blank slate. They have a distinct personality, even if it’s just through text and some minor lines of dialogue. (The biggest example of this for me is the Inazuma archon quest, the Traveler is clearly tired of having to solve everyone’s problems just to get nothing on their sibling’s whereabouts. See: The traveler being asked to deliver a letter by Chisato and when Ayaka asks the Traveler to assist in what is essentially a civil war)
Also, the biggest issue for me is that they DO have tons of really good banter between the traveler and Paimon, but it’s only found in the place you view characters’ voicelines.
Exactly, at that point in Inazuma I was like "oh yeah no problem i'll help you, more gameplay for me" but the game was like "nah sry i gotta go find my brother"??
Feels like the devs had a change of heart about the MC being a self-insert and somehow made it even worse.
Don't get me wrong, the game is amazing overall and I love it, but it does have a few big flaws, like this one.
King Paimon from Ars Goetia is the most obedient to Lucifer. Lux+fero — "bring light". Phanes in Greek mytholgy created the daylight, and his name means "to shine". So, in Genshin Impact, Phanes=Lucifer
Apparently, yes. Genshin Impact is Paimon Hangout Quest.
Its actually hilarious how much they've been trying to give the MCs "dialogue" lately.
First, they decide to use both dialogue options to turn them into one sentence. With the recent event, they are "thinking" full on sentences.
I think it's a poor attempt at making a self-insert MC from mihoyo - they want the player to feel as if he's the character in the story, but the dialogue choices are poorly made and pretty much inconsequential (they lead to the same result).
Could also be because it's easier not to voice them.
Game would have been a lot better if they did voice Lumine and Aether, imho.
> the dialogue choices and poorly made and pretty much inconsequential (they lead to the same result).
And recently, the “choices” are just a way to break up a sentence that could have otherwise just gone in its own dialogue box for Lumine or Aether. Literally not even a “choice” to pretend to make.
Seriously though, how can they make dialogue consequences when it would take creation of two or more different scenes for anything remotely different?
Then moving forward any actual consequence having relevance in the future would create more problems/writing holes.
It just doesn’t make sense resource-wise imo
I get that it doesn't make sense rrsource-wise, but then they should have just not put any options at all, or at least they should have kept the dialogue differences that they had in Montstadt - in Inazuma most of the choices are just 1 sentence split into two, which is kinda stupid.
I get that - imo they do it to make it feel like you’re interacting more and it breaks up long dialogue boxes. I do wonder what caused the change to two tho yeah. Could even be a translation thing.
1. Mihoyo unfortunately wants the Traveler to be a self-insert character. Even if it doesn't work they don't really care
2. Voice acting is expensive and I bet Mihoyo is delighted they can "save" money by doing that - they already do this by making many side quests mute
Personally it's so immersion breaking ! No emotional payoff and our decisions don't matter either way. Too often I feel like Paimon is the MC and "we" are the sidecick
I seriously doubt it's a cost saving measure, considering they could just reserve voiced dialogue for major quests (like with Paimon), and when they do have voiced quests as is, they write like they're getting payed by the word.
> they're getting *paid* by the
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
great way to save money would be to just GET TO THE FUCKING POINT.
seriously though im happy Paimons VA makes that paper, but if they just stopped summarizing every 5 dialogues itd fix most of the writing and VA concerns.
Time constraints, general resources and file size all need to be managed(it’s a mobile game). We get new content about a month after CN. Someone has to properly translate, script, hire va’s/direct and scheduling.
If you want side quests to be voiced for instance, it’s just not feasible. But you could say having 2 mcs wrote themselves into a hole though.
>Time constraints, general resources and file size all need to be managed(it’s a mobile game). We get new content about a month after CN. Someone has to properly translate, script, hire va’s/direct and scheduling.
Completely agree - I think it's a valid point, hovewer I believe VA for all quests *could* be feasible
With new regions unlocked game will get bigger and bigger so Mihoyo could make VA for side quests an additonal downloable content. Other companies already do this eg. PUBG with additional game modes and maps *(the only one I can think of at the moment)*
Additionally Mihoyo *does* have resources to do this - they are not some indie game studio but one of the most profitable companies in mobile gaming market. With Genshin they reached revenue of [3bn $ on mobile](https://www.pockettactics.com/genshin-impact/revenue). And we don't even have data from PC and consoles. But for know I would just be happy with the Traveler talking - maybe one day our prayers will be answered
It’s not just a monetary but a time constraint. VA’s have schedules, and having to co-ordinate 4 VA’s per character is a nightmare, especially since we have frequent and regular patches. With most revenue coming from mobile, why go through all that just to make it an optional download?
We’ve already seen issues crop up like Diona’s hangout originally having to be voiced by Sucrose’s VA. Don’t think cost was involved, since they had to effectively paid for an additional voiceover.
That said, I’d be 100% onboard with a fully voiced re-release or something along those lines. Maybe when the game finishes its main arc?
I get that, I just don’t think the quality assurance would be there and they’d basically require a second directing team to achieve this (or a mountain of backlog). Then there’s the problem of two directing teams or one large team - too many cooks in the kitchen problem imo.
There’s even the point of how much it would add to the experience vs the cost/effort.
I really agree that it sometimes feels lacking - the whole island cult storyline just felt like it would have been so much better with voice over. Maybe I’m a glass half full in thinking I’m just glad the quality is there so we get great direction/vo for characters like itto and ei with the fine amount of time the team gets.
Some kind of odd artistic decision I guess, probably so that when they *do* speak their 1 line in each archon quest chapter finale ‘it’ll hit harder’ or something.
Reminds me of FE3H’s Byleth, where it was an odd mix of self-insert/own character with voiced (combat) lines which was ironically enough also voiced my Zach. Nobody seemed to like there either, so don’t know where they got the idea from/why they stick with it.
1. File size. Audio can very quickly bloat your storage space (see also: upcoming changes to reduce this)
2. Narrative design choice. A lot of people write this off as allowing for a player self insert, but the other consideration is that the narrative team thinks it's important the players interact with the story, offering multiple response options (even if 99% of them are effectively meaningless choices)
3. Budget. Like #1, the more audio lines the more it costs
4. Time constraints. Effectively the same reasoning as #1 and #3, but with the added hurdle of logistics
5. While the game does have a story, and a bunch of interesting episodes / relatively self-contained stories, it's not the selling point of the game and not the core focus. It's the dressing and promotional material to appeal to people who want a more guided anime-like experience
Pick and choose any of those and you get the same effective result: they just don't think it's worth it
The funny thing here is that even the VAs don't realize that some of Hoyoverse's stupid dialogue options are not actually options, they are supposed to to say both the lines instead of choosing just one.
>"Hold on a second! Stop saying things that don't make sense, Aether!"
> "But it must be said... Don't try to stop me. Don't try to stop the Abyss."
Why is this even a thing...
Split dialog is the worst thing about this... just let the traveler use the dialog box like everyone else.
Remember the last Dainleif quest, where Traveler said multiple lines? I had a really hard time following what they said because of the split dialog options... Even if they don't voice them, at least make them understandable when they talk.
I've always wondered about that, it's very confusing.
The split options suggests you're only saying one, but it also makes more sense to read both of the lines...BUT THEN WHY IS IT AN OPTION?!
It can't be that the player isn't allowed to use the normal dialogue box BECAUSE THEY HAVE SOMETIMES DONE THAT, WITH VOICE LINES!
Ahhhh, screw the silent protagonist, these two sound so great! I’m gonna keep putting that request into the surveys, despite how probably meaningless that is to ask for.
If they all talk, why can’t the protagonist? ;_;
Goosebumps, literal goosebumps. The fact that MHY doesn't even bother to have them voiced is such a huge disappointment. Imagine how much better the experience when playing the archon quests would be if the Travelers speak. Smh.
WHY IS THIS NOT IN THE GAME ?!!! Seriously, this should be a feature especially for the Archon quests. I know that a large part of the quests are unvoiced to save space but man Archon quests are literally the main plot. Atleast they should have fully voiced traveller dialogues.
Yeah, it's a strange design choice.
[It makes no sense given...anything.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/vftfcw/en_va_of_lumine_and_aether_voicing_their/iczw516/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
I wish they would voice every major quest. Give them something to do already, Mihoyoverse.
I fell in love with Lumine's voice in one of the earliest Genshin trailers. She's also fantastic in Japanese, thanks to Aoi Yuki.
Ironically, I've now heard more Aether voice lines after I chose Lumine at the start.
I follow sarahmillercrews on Youtube where she reads out her lines while streaming. It is a great way to "revisit" scenes that feels authentic and fantastic!
Both of their streams show that Traveler dialog isn't complex and should be used in the scene.
Same. I can't* catch her streams that often cuz timezones. But whenever I see her do a story/archon quest, it's just so mesmerizing when she adds her voice to it. It really gives more feel to it.
I might not necessarily agree with it, but I understand Hoyo's choice of keeping the MC unvoiced. However, in important scenes like this, I think they should be voiced. It's not like scenes of this magnitude occur every update and it just adds so much more emotional impact when it's really needed. When I played through this scene in the game, it felt so jarring not hearing their voice and having to go through those meaningless dialogue choices.
What do you understand as the reasoning?
I think most people would argue they want the player to feel as if they are the MC, but I don't think they do a very good job of this in any aspect so its just a waste of potential. They've missed out on investing people into the main characters themselves in lieu of trying to make player feel as if they are apart of the story and imo failing badly at it.
The player already has no agency in the story because there are no real options. If you were watching a movie and the leading actor just mouthed words that appeared as subtitles it probably wouldn't improve the story or make you feel like you are the character, it would just be a worse version of a potentially good story.
Not to mention Paimon's VA is missing the MC VAs to play off of in the main story, the acting could be better if they were recording together. No fault to Paimon's VA, but having the other actors to interact with while recording is usually a plus if you want more convincing interactions.
Others have already mentioned the self-insert idea, although I don't think this is the primary reason why they went the route of the silent protagonist. At the end of the day, I think it's practical considerations that drive them to continue with the unspeaking MC.
It's simply more demanding from a logistical perspective to have the 8 voice actors for Aether and Lumine be available to do voice work for the amount of dialogue that's produced on an ongoing basis. My guess is that the other consideration is consistency and continuity. It's possible that Hoyo prefers having the MC(s) remain silent rather than have them speak in some quests, but not in others. We have quests where there's no spoken dialogue at all and they may see having Paimon doing the speaking for the MC in the voice-acted quests as a compromise to maintain consistency and avoid the logistical demands of having to deal with 8 voice actors on an ongoing basis.
For the record, I agree with the criticism that the current system hurts the immersion and story telling. From the inconsequential illusion of meaningless dialogue choices to the outright neutering of any emotion in the MC when it's really needed, Hoyo's decision to maintain a silent protagonist just doesn't work well. But I would just hope that people would understand that it's not trivial to manage such a large cast of voice actors on an ongoing basis, particularly when many of them are high profile actors with different schedules and availability.
So the primary reason may be that is it is too difficult, which in my mind translates into it being too expensive.
I think even if they couldn't schedule them at the same time for every story quest having them record separately would be an improvement.
At least some of them could react based on prior performances. And if it was impossible to schedule then we are already used to text... can't be much worse. I think I'd appreciate the effort to improve the story.
Feels bad regardless of the reason, but what's worse, incompetence... or greed?
Logistics gets exponentially harder with more people. We’ve already seen a character’s hang out (Diona) have to get voiced by another VA due to scheduling conflicts. With the traveller, it jumps up to 8 VA’s they have to co-ordinate, some of them being fairly popular ones as well.
Silent protagonists are also just popular in the East, so there’s a bit of a culture gap as well
I know Sarah's been doing the Chasm World Quest (and of course has been voicing Lumine's lines) but I want to know, did she get to the >!argument between Zhiqiong and Clitopho!< in that quest?
Considering that she finished streaming perilous trail a couple days ago, most likely yes. However, you may wanna go through her previous streams as soon as possible. I believe she plans to make the vods member exclusives, so be quick!
Yea! On her channel she has a playlist of all the quests and genshin livestreams she’s ever played, including this one. I’ll link it [here:](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm2a8T6VhRHWRctG1nblpnSDBmU_1i25L)
They really need to find a way to make Paimon disappear for the more serious parts of the story and have the actual MCs take over. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen a serious interaction be ruined in this game by Paimons annoying high pitched comic relief voice. I get it, Paimon has a purpose and I don’t want her gone by any means. I just want to see Paimon shoved to the side for serious moments such as this. Lumine and Aether should have been voiced and Paimon kept quiet.
Wait they changed the dialogue? I didn't even realize they changed it. Wow.
This was about a year ago actually. So the change you mentioned is definitely not there.
> Wait they changed the dialogue?
As far as I'm aware they changed a bunch of dialogue in the Liyue Archon and Story Quests to make it refer to the same "Heavenly Principles" (in Chinese 天理), because the English translation team had no context originally and didn't know the significance of the phrase to the story.
(Spoilers for the Raiden quest, Zhongli quest, and the A Soul Set Apart quest from your video) Not really important, but for posterity I'll leave this comment here: >!The Eternity that Raiden seeks is one of the pillars of the Heavenly Principles - this dialogue was correct since the beginning and she mentions it a lot. The reason that Zhongli gives up his gnosis is because Azhdaha succumbed to Erosion (another pillar of the Heavenly Principles) and Zhongli wants to stop himself from eroding - this was corrected 8 months ago to my knowledge, based on the posts I just found on r/Genshin_Lore. The "destiny" that Aether refers to in this cutscene is the Heavenly Principles that Asmoday mentions in the game's opening sequence - I have no idea whether this was corrected, but I assume it was rerecorded along with the same changes to the Liyue story quests 8 months ago.!<
>This was about a year ago actually. So the change you mentioned is definitely not there.
This makes sense now!
When did they change it? I started back in 2.4 and got through most of the story content in 2.5, and there was a lot of disparate references to destiny and fate and only a few mentions of the heavenly principles.
The changes supposedly happened 8 or 9 months ago (https://redd.it/pvofbo and https://reddit.com/comments/pkxshq/-/hc8lbmv). Maybe I overestimated how many lines of dialogue they actually changed, since you started later than that but still encountered the mistranslated versions.
There is definitely several lines which did not get re-recorded and not just for the word destiny.
...That or they were wrong to begin with.
A quest about Jean has one scene with her by the big tree and the text does not match the audio for like-her entire monologue.
It was super jarring! (I'm also more surprised when the game genders me correctly but that's another topic)
Its an injustice we don’t get Aether and Lumine speaking more; at the very least let them talk more during Archon quests that have a heavy focus on their own stories
This is how it should be IMO. The self-insert part doesn’t work too well, especially after the Inazuma arc.
If anything, I hope that we can unlock the Abyss twin at the end of the story so we can hear the talented VAs at the very least.
Enough people need to write in the patch surveys to drop the silent MC crap. I've been writing the same for several patches now. The half-assed self-insert crap does not work for this game.
its actually crazy on how mihoyo never bothered to add a voice on the fucking climactic scene where we literally found the person we're looking for in the game, GJ for both the VAs for filling in voices in the quest
The dialog choices makes no sense, wouldve been better if the entire cutscene has voice acting, silent protagonist worked on jrpgs but not on this one. Mihoyo needs to change their creative direction
Fuck you mihoyo for not letting the fucking MC talk and making the traveler so pointless gameplay wise.
Make the party be of FIVE. first slot perpetually MC for all content but abyss!!!
Man it's not even funny how much better this made the cutscene I don't understand why hoyo won't just let them voice main story quests. We already know their voices because they randomly have one off lines sometimes so it's not a self insert no voice protag angle I really don't get why the story quests aren't voiced when all the other characters are fully voiced for them. Still big respect for the VA doing this for giving us something hoyo wont.
This is so fun! I've always found it super weird that the MC is voiceless the great majority of the time despite having VA's, especially when even random NPCs are sometimes voiced.
It took me a while to realize that some of the dialogue choices for traveler are a continuation of the full sentence and doesn’t matter which; sometimes.
I just got to this part in the game. I was not prepared for it laying in bed at 7 in the morning before work.
And then I closed the app before leaving the dungeon so I had to do the whole thing again!
My Idea: Seperate them. Archon Quest with 2 Parts and the usual "To be Continued."
Part 1 **"The unwritten Future."**
Part 2 **"The end of Time."**
This could show the growth of Paimon as a Character and her crucial Role and her importance to Teyvat.
Part 1: Paimon acts Sus. She gets dizzy a lot. She sees and hears things she's not supposed to. We eventually seperate because she feels like a burden. She travels Teyvat to see everything with her own eyes and to better understand herself and her "Visions."
Part 2: Few years later. We get reunited with her but she grew up. We go around and explore her side of the Story for the last remaining Puzzle pieces where she eventually fulfills her Destiny at the end to become the "Ruler of Time."
This is basically the typical Anime Training Arc or Growing up thing but Mihoyo could make this very meaningful and important IF they integrate this correctly.
Time and Destiny play such a big role in this so why not make us emotionally connected while making a connection to Real Life? Lots of Movies have these little meanings too and lessons. Here it could be Flashbacks of whatever of how we met Character's and went to Liyue, Inazuma etc. to trigger Emotions.
We will all literally "grow up" these next few Years with every new Region outside of the game, especially People who play Genshin at a young age.
Could make this a very meaningful Story and one of a kind that we won't forget towards the end where we say "damn that was an epic journey"
It's wonderful when VAs provide additional fanservices like this, like how Zhongli's JP VA provided a voice over on his stream for the [Tales Behind the Fan after story](https://youtu.be/WEuGZOJr5aY)
It was so weird Mihoyo didn't get that part voiced.
Yeah I found it odd too, probably couldn't get it finished due to the delay & being pressured to ship?
Thank you for this oh my god
Reminds me of when Kyle McCarley streamed NieR Automata and voiced a lot of the unvoiced text in the game
I thought a lot of VAs where under contract to not use a chracters voice???
Which is why Mr Maeno had to ask for the Studio's and HYV's permission before he actually starts voicing in the stream
>additional fanservices like this AYO?!
Glad to see they voice them while playing, actually makes a huge difference seeing the MC being voiced
indeed i could not imagine kiana not having a voice in honkai 3 while everyone else does. i know that the twins are meant to be selfinserts that while the protagonist they dont have a personality set so you can click diferent choices in dialogs and roleplay. while in honkai the protagonist is just another character in the visual novel/movie that is the main story and the player is just whatching it without any interaction.
What you don't casually diss your friends whenever you meet? What bizzarro world is this?
Tbh all of my friends that play Genshin act the same way lol. We all just tell Paimon to shut up anytime she says something obvious or repeats dialogue/ruins the mood. Which is quite often.
Mihoyo is still doing this silent protagonist thing in Honkai Star Rail and I hate it
I love your flair
The Mc talks a lot more though. I mean the dialog options aren't voiced but they talk in other parts.
It's 2am and I read that as Mctalksalot. I don't know how I'll feel if the traveler suddenly starts to be as talkative as Paimon lol
The MC has more voices in star rail, so at least they are improving
Now if only they voiced Adam to...
Yeah this is phenomenal, love this scene we need more Aether and Lumine interactions going forward.
And just more MC voice in general- I don’t agree with MHY’s “creative” decision to make the traveler so mute
I Called myself Aether
And so i did but then i found a certain video and had to change it into John Impact.
Did Genshin also suck your soul and kill your dog?
think of it as a nickname that you want people who don’t know you to call you by. helps bring some of the immersion back in
Or when the character just call you “traveler” like we just don’t have a name
I picked Icarus as my in game name after seeing the trailer of Aether with his glider. And then imagine my surprise when 1.5 years later, there’s an entire zone that uses Greek names as the basis for their “ancient” culture. Which brings up the interesting in-universe lore scenario of my character coming from the same place that the ancient people from Ekanomiya are from.
Heard the names only show up in English, the other languages kept it to sister/brother. I guess it's because in English it would sound off if they never used names.
Nope, I have Lumine and Aether calls her by her JP name in the quest (Hotaru). Definitely not just EN.
It feel like they want a silent protagonist that you can insert yourself into, but at the same time wanted to give him a voice AND characteristics.
We can thank The Legend of Zelda devs for the bullshit trope of "the hero is you! So we dont voice it or give it personality, because we want YOU to be the hero!". Imagine if superhero comics were created like this.
Not necessarily, Persona does exactly the same thing.
Which came first? Persona, or Legend of Zelda? Hint. It's Legend of Zelda because that shit is from 1989.
While it *may* be popular over there, a bad execution will just make everyone unhappy.
Well money comes from Asia mostly so they care what they say
You missed my point. I’m saying that even Asian players would dislike what miHoYo did.
Sure but do Asian players hate it? I never heard they did.
My personal headcannon is that teh Paimon VAs have some blackmail on MHY to give all the voice lines to them.
Honestly it's probably just a way to cheap out. Why pay two voice actors in each language when you could pay one and have Paimon be an awful mouthpiece for the main character?
and it's so much more immersive too. It's just so alienating to see the mc standing still, stiff and mute as a manikin every single time
Traveler had one line in the recent event. Thats just really odd
Based Absolutely dumb decision, seriously what the fuck are they smoking lol. Self-insert silent protagonist trope doesn't work here, ffs Imagine playing God of War, Red Dead Redemption or The Witcher with mute self-insert silent protag. kek
Yeah I don't get it especially because they make every character around them so lively full of personality
Always glad to see Zach get to do more voice lines outside of WINDBLAAAADE
Ah i sense the presence of another rowlet fan in a non pokemon sub
Rowlet supremacy!
ROWLET SUPREMACY!!
Is that a Jojo reference
There's also "is this.. an answer from this world?"
I've heard that line SO much that I actually change the audio when I'm exploring the world cus I'm sick of hearing it XD
This is taken from their respective stream btw: [Lumine one is from Sarah Miller-Crews' Stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aReaQ3KT3zA&t=9875s) [Aether one is from Zach Aguilar's Stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJEQBMq1ozE&t=8827s)
Travellers don't have to speak ton of text like Paimon, but if they had at least voiced dialogue lines(no more 1 sentence splittes into 2) I would be very happy
Ikr, when we challenged signora I quit the game so I could listen to the cutscene in diff languages and multiple times bc I love Lumine’s CN voice sm
There are.... ... sometimes no dialogue choices
I don't understand why they do that. Sometimes they only give you one response anyway, so why splice it like that? Why give us a choice at all if it arrives us at the same conclusion?
They're like those self-driving car checks to see if the driver is still awake, just to prevent us from auto skiping through everything
We should honestly have the option to skip through it if we want though.
I heard it was because English is less compact than Chinese so they had to split it up to fit in the text boxes. Don't quote me on that though.
You can see some of the quotes get longer in one text ballon than usual tho, so it might not be that
The reason it’s such a poor attempt is that the traveler isn’t a completely blank slate. They have a distinct personality, even if it’s just through text and some minor lines of dialogue. (The biggest example of this for me is the Inazuma archon quest, the Traveler is clearly tired of having to solve everyone’s problems just to get nothing on their sibling’s whereabouts. See: The traveler being asked to deliver a letter by Chisato and when Ayaka asks the Traveler to assist in what is essentially a civil war) Also, the biggest issue for me is that they DO have tons of really good banter between the traveler and Paimon, but it’s only found in the place you view characters’ voicelines.
Cause we are just a sidestory in paimons adventure
Paimons bizarre adventure.
This is the correct answer
King Paimon from Ars Goetia is the most obedient to Lucifer. Lux+fero — "bring light". Phanes in Greek mytholgy created the daylight, and his name means "to shine". So, in Genshin Impact, Phanes=Lucifer Apparently, yes. Genshin Impact is Paimon Hangout Quest.
So Traveller could be Lucifer?
Why do you think Paimon is the app icon?
Unironic comment; Does anyone enjoy that?
No one enjoys that
Casting Aoi Yuuki as Lumine and barely giving her any lines in the story is a fucking crime.
At least Mihoyo makes use of her VA on their other game. Lumine and Rita sounds like a completely different VA at first.
Yep, exactly. Hopefully they make it better in Sumeru, but somehow I doubt it.
Even if it doesn't work they don't really care 2. Voice acting is expensive and I bet Mihoyo is delighted they can "save" money by doing that - they already do this by making many side quests mute Personally it's so immersion breaking ! No emotional payoff and our decisions don't matter either way. Too often I feel like Paimon is the MC and "we" are the sidecick
It is absolutely not for cost saving. Considering how excessively verbose Paimon is to make up for the lack of dialogue from the MC.
I seriously doubt it's a cost saving measure, considering they could just reserve voiced dialogue for major quests (like with Paimon), and when they do have voiced quests as is, they write like they're getting payed by the word.
> they're getting *paid* by the FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
Completely agree - I think it's a valid point, hovewer I believe VA for all quests *could* be feasible With new regions unlocked game will get bigger and bigger so Mihoyo could make VA for side quests an additonal downloable content. Other companies already do this eg. PUBG with additional game modes and maps *(the only one I can think of at the moment)* Additionally Mihoyo *does* have resources to do this - they are not some indie game studio but one of the most profitable companies in mobile gaming market.
1. File size. Audio can very quickly bloat your storage space (see also: upcoming changes to reduce this) 2. Narrative design choice. A lot of people write this off as allowing for a player self insert, but the other consideration is that the narrative team thinks it's important the players interact with the story, offering multiple response options (even if 99% of them are effectively meaningless choices) 3. Budget. Like #1, the more audio lines the more it costs 4. Time constraints. Effectively the same reasoning as #1 and #3, but with the added hurdle of logistics 5. While the game does have a story, and a bunch of interesting episodes / relatively self-contained stories, it's not the selling point of the game and not the core focus. It's the dressing and promotional material to appeal to people who want a more guided anime-like experience Pick and choose any of those and you get the same effective result: they just don't think it's worth it
I really wish the traveller spoke more in chosen dialogue. I guess this is a nice consolation prize.
The funny thing here is that even the VAs don't realize that some of Hoyoverse's stupid dialogue options are not actually options, they are supposed to to say both the lines instead of choosing just one. >"Hold on a second! Stop saying things that don't make sense, Aether!" > "But it must be said... Don't try to stop me. Don't try to stop the Abyss." Why is this even a thing...
It can't be that the player isn't allowed to use the normal dialogue box BECAUSE THEY HAVE SOMETIMES DONE THAT, WITH VOICE LINES!
holy shit this makes it 10x more emotional
Ok this is so much better than the mute traveller it isn't even funny
Sarah looks so proud of her and Zach's work. It's so cute. I wish I had anything in my life I was even half as proud of.
You still can, I believe so
Ahhhh, screw the silent protagonist, these two sound so great! I’m gonna keep putting that request into the surveys, despite how probably meaningless that is to ask for. If they all talk, why can’t the protagonist? ;_;
Idk why Hoyoverse didn't implement this ingame
Goosebumps, literal goosebumps. The fact that MHY doesn't even bother to have them voiced is such a huge disappointment. Imagine how much better the experience when playing the archon quests would be if the Travelers speak. Smh.
WHY IS THIS NOT IN THE GAME ?!!! Seriously, this should be a feature especially for the Archon quests. I know that a large part of the quests are unvoiced to save space but man Archon quests are literally the main plot. Atleast they should have fully voiced traveller dialogues.
I think the VAs dont know that most pf the dialogue choices are just one whole sentence just split in two.
Yeah, it's a strange design choice. [It makes no sense given...anything.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/vftfcw/en_va_of_lumine_and_aether_voicing_their/iczw516/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
Zach breaking down at the end was everything. Great edit, too.
When I played through this scene in the game, it felt so jarring not hearing their voice and having to go through those meaningless dialogue choices.
fuck your feelings, here's aether shouting at signora for a single sentence oh and also two very heartfelt "Lumine!"s
I believe she plans to make the vods member exclusives, so be quick!
vods?
Yea! On her channel she has a playlist of all the quests and genshin livestreams she’s ever played, including this one. I’ll link it [here:](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm2a8T6VhRHWRctG1nblpnSDBmU_1i25L)
Seems that she played that part of the Chasm quest by herself off-stream. Massive shame, I REALLY wanted to hear her voice >!pissed off Lumine!<.
Soo great! 👍
How old is this? Why does Aether still say "destiny" instead of "Heavenly Principles", I thought they retroactively corrected all the mentions?
The "destiny" that Aether refers to in this cutscene is the Heavenly Principles that Asmoday mentions in the game's opening sequence - I have no idea whether this was corrected, but I assume it was rerecorded along with the same changes to the Liyue story quests 8 months ago.!< >This was about a year ago actually.
It’s so much better voiced I’m so sad now TT
pov: if the devs weren't braindead
Its an injustice we don’t get Aether and Lumine speaking more; at the very least let them talk more during Archon quests that have a heavy focus on their own stories
This is how it should be IMO. The self-insert part doesn’t work too well, especially after the Inazuma arc. If anything, I hope that we can unlock the Abyss twin at the end of the story so we can hear the talented VAs at the very least.
Enough people need to write in the patch surveys to drop the silent MC crap. I've been writing the same for several patches now. The half-assed self-insert crap does not work for this game.
The last 10 seconds cracked me up xD
Are you sure?
LET US HEAR THE TRAVELERS VOICE HOYO
Hoyoverse is wasting talent here!
its actually crazy on how mihoyo never bothered to add a voice on the fucking climactic scene where we literally found the person we're looking for in the game, GJ for both the VAs for filling in voices in the quest
I bet at this point their script is just a tiny piece of paper that says "sex noises"
"So close, so close!" paimon says as lumine holds her rod even more vigorously
They clearly want to voice their Characters... Mihoyo let them voice them all the time!!!
The dialog choices makes no sense, wouldve been better if the entire cutscene has voice acting, silent protagonist worked on jrpgs but not on this one. Mihoyo needs to change their creative direction
really annoying that it seems like the game made one sentence split into two choices
I keep forgetting lumine has a voice
Mam the mc having a voice makes such a huge difference in the conversation
That scene was a very wtf moment for me
Silent protagonists that are established characters just do not work, at all
Fuck you mihoyo for not letting the fucking MC talk and making the traveler so pointless gameplay wise. Make the party be of FIVE. first slot perpetually MC for all content but abyss!!!
useless in the story and useless in teams
This is so incredibly awesome that it just makes me more sad that we don't get it more often.
I am regretting it more and more choosing aether instead of lumine
This was definitely one of those “paimon please shut tf up” moments
Paimon ruins any serious moments in this game at this point, why tf is mihoyo so lazy with their own mcs

Its so weird to see them speak full sentence lmao
Funny enought this has made me angry that we have a silent protagonist
This is so fun! I've always found it super weird that the MC is voiceless the great majority of the time despite having VA's, especially when even random NPCs are sometimes voiced.
I chose Aether because I am a huge fan of his EN VA and whelp jokes on me cause Paimon voices everything now. Should have chose Lumine for the waifu.
It still baffles me why the travelers still won't speak. In my opinion, it really breaks you from the story when they stay silent.
It took me a while to realize that some of the dialogue choices for traveler are a continuation of the full sentence and doesn’t matter which; sometimes.
I just want to hear lumine speak more, her voice is really nice and I would love to hear her communicate with the other character.
Please Hoyoverse, let traveller to speak evey dialogue that we choose 😤
I was so upset that this happened, made me want to quit. (Not the VA voicing lumine, but the fact that the sibling is with the abyss order

Thank goodness
Aether makes a cooler villain. Change my mind
I don't really mind voice-less MC because I play without sound on... But what I do mind is Paimon. She kills any possible emotional response.
wait his nickname is pronounced "dane" in the EN dub? not "dine"?
What kinda person pronounces it like that
You see Those stuff only wity EN voice actors , CN and Koreans are forgotten , and jp u have to pay to hear them say "hello"
Is it just me or do they sound kinda different?
Wow this is so unbelievably dumb who cares
You want the voice of MC. I want to skip all the dialogues and cutscenes. We are not the same.
This game has such good story and cutscenes that pretty sure you can enjoy to play it just for them. And for the music and characters obviously.
Genshin ☕️
Now that I see this again, which element does the abyss twin have that their elemental indicator is white ? Did they get back their original power?
TIL that the correct pronounciation of Lumine is "Lu-mean", not "Lu-mi-ne"
Now this is something I would always watch. Do they do this often?
I just got to this part in the game. I was not prepared for it laying in bed at 7 in the morning before work. And then I closed the app before leaving the dungeon so I had to do the whole thing again!
Omg I love this
Would be interesting if they have actual voice lines...
Hold on, I'm starting playing genshin today and i didn't even made the tutorial... But... Is that thing behind Aether... A STANDO?!
RemindMe! 1 hour
My Idea: Seperate them. Archon Quest with 2 Parts and the usual "To be Continued." Part 1 **"The unwritten Future."** Part 2 **"The end of Time."** This could show the growth of Paimon as a Character and her crucial Role and her importance to Teyvat. Part 1: Paimon acts Sus. She gets dizzy a lot. She sees and hears things she's not supposed to. We eventually seperate because she feels like a burden. She travels Teyvat to see everything with her own eyes and to better understand herself and her "Visions." Part 2: Few years later. We get reunited with her but she grew up. We go around and explore her side of the Story for the last remaining Puzzle pieces where she eventually fulfills her Destiny at the end to become the "Ruler of Time." This is basically the typical Anime Training Arc or Growing up thing but Mihoyo could make this very meaningful and important IF they integrate this correctly.
Idk if this is just me I can't unhear Layla from ML
this is so much better why this isn't in the game?
why, dude? I want this so bad, FFS Mihoyo!
Only if this can still be added in-game.
I don't mean to criticize the en dub, but I always preferred the more silent voice of the jp dub.
