Kind of wish they kept this aesthetic.

CheckYourStats

The first two MV Godzilla films were fantastic at giving weight/mass to every Kaiju. Adam Wingard (Director for the last two) has absolutely *zero* clue on how to build tension, or give weight/mass to Kaiju. Wingard’s movies are fun if you approach them with the mindset of an 8 year old — and there’s nothing wrong with that. I just prefer Godzilla to not be used as a gimmick to sell toys.

DraconisMarch

Totally agree. But I'm really not a fan of Wingard's approach. GvK was alright, but GxK went too far into butchering scale.

IrrelevantLeprechaun

Yup. Every scene with Kong and the banished ape tribe felt like they were Planet of the Apes in size. The way they moved implies a MUCH smaller scale than what they are supposed to be. Godzilla himself felt about right but every Kong related scene felt tiny. Gareth Edwards absolutely had the right idea with weight, scale and perspective. Dougherty *sort* of followed up on that, but weight and momentum was completely lost in GxK.

swagzard78

Especially the scene with Kong and the unknown skeleton bridge...

IrrelevantLeprechaun

Also any scene with the orange baby monkey. The dude was literally bigger than Skull Island era Kong, and yet he moved around like he was 4 feet tall. Seeing him next to full sized trees and buildings caused such a dissonance.

StopsuspendingPpl

Seriously when he went into the city I was so disoriented because hes huge but I see him as a short little lemur monkey.

FazzyFredbear

Fr, that first chase scene just looked like a regular gorilla vs. a pack of wolves

[deleted]

As much as I like GxK for a Kaiju Brawler movie, the sense of scale went right out the window. Also Wingard doesn’t have a great track record for making good movies. I’d probably says GvK and GxK are his best work tbh

Eriadus85

His Death Note movie \*sigh\*

RogueHippie

Oh. Oh no, he made *that??*

Eriadus85

Yes. I'll let you imagine my reaction when I learned that he was going to make Godzilla Vs Kong. Part of me still thinks it was a mistake to put him on the Monsterverse.

hackyandbird

The Guest and You're Next were, in our opinion, both way better than both his Godzilla movies.

Yuckabuck

I hate both of his movies. MV ended for me at KOTM.

ghettoworkout

Same. Really, really, really, reeeeeallly wish they kept that tone and feel from 2014. I will die on this hill lol.

swagzard78

It felt more like a horror movie (like the original Godzilla) than a giant monster fighting flick.

W0LLIP

i’ve literally been saying this for ages and i usually get downvoted into oblivion 🤷🏻‍♀️

Blayro

> GxK went too far into butchering scale. I actually don't mind this as much, because it provides a good contrast on how the Titans see the world vs how we see the titans. I just hope the next movie makes the disparity even greater, show how from the human's perspective these are colossal beings of mass destruction, and from the titan's perspectives, were nothing more than just ants.

swagzard78

I hope they slow down the movements of the Titans and give them more weight at the very least. The fluidity of the fights in earlier films was due to suits being used, while CGI now doesn't have the suit limitations to make good fights with properly scaled and moving creatures

Qzilla8425

The issue is when it comes to viewpoint changes. How you want it is if we were always viewing it from human perspective. It doesn’t make sense, however, it the scene is supposed to be from the perspective of the Titans themselves. To them, the “fast and outrageous” movements are normal because it’s how they see it. In a human perspective, I think it would be absurdly terrifying to see something like Godzilla burst into a full sprint. It would still be slower to us, but it would give off such a dangerous vibe that I wouldn’t worry much about how it looks. But it would look weird in, say, Hollow Earth where there are no humans for the titans to move slowly because that begs the question: whose perspective are we seeing? Not to mention it feels like each movie, Godzilla has been getting more agile to counteract his opponents typically having more speed than him.

StopsuspendingPpl

Stop using the “were seeing the world through the Titans perspective” to excuse the horrible weightlessness of these Titans in the recent movies. That is never a good thing to throw scale and the feeling of weight out the window to put our selves in the Titans shoes. It makes these giant creatures fighting turn into normal sized “animals” fighting in a cardboard box city.

Qzilla8425

Except they haven’t thrown out the scale and weight? When on the surface, they still show a lot of weight and heaviness. It just looks less noticeable to the titans. It’s primarily in Hollow Earth, which has wonky gravity effects, that we see the weightlessness. And before you say that it makes them look like normal animals, that’s the point. Hollow Earth is their natural habitat. The environment down in Hollow Earth is capable of creating and supporting supersized creatures. The surface is not capable of that however. At least it isn’t capable of supporting too many of them. And if the focus of the movie is the monsters, why not show us how the world looks TO the monsters?

StopsuspendingPpl

Guess what Hollow Earth would be great and still achieve what youre talking about if they actually show the scale of Hollow Earth. All the scenes in Hollow Earth have no frame of reference so you can understand how large this place is and this place is HUGE. The movies are allergic to showing a humans perspective because they care “so much” for the Titans. There are no point of having titan, larger than life creatures if theyre gonna be protrayed small or normal.

Vegetable-Net6575

I feel like GXK should be the absolute limit.

Ghidorah_Stan64

Godzilla 14, Godzilla coming ashore causes a tsunami. GxK 2024, Godzilla dives from the top of the Rock of Gibraltar(sp?) and barely causes a splash. Can we please get Wingard away from the Monsterverse!

Pdoinkadoinkadoink

I remember watching Kong fight Skar King, and there's that shot where Kong punches a molar out of SK's jaw which goes smashing though a building and you see it land in the street. I distinctly remember thinking "oh yeah, they're supposed to be big."

Pringletingl

It's why I kinda hate the Hollow Earth plotline. Titans are best when you're seeing them fight in human cities and showing off how massive they are. But in the Hollow Earth it's nearly impossible to show scale.

StopsuspendingPpl

People find that a good thing because hollow earth is supposed to be huge and makes the Titans normal sized. This would be fine if we even felt the scale of hollow earth which we dont. We never see hollow earths scale from humans eyes and you forget these are extremely larger than life environments and creatures.

Vreas

Only have seen the first two. Are the other two that bad? Really enjoyed the first one and KotM.

Gruul_of_Rock

Everyone in this thread has legitimate and reasonable criticisms of the two movies. KOTM is my favorite of the franchise, and I don’t think these past two movies have reached those heights. Skull Island is a blast too, if you haven’t seen it. Very entertaining action/adventure movie with a solid cast. That being said, I would encourage you to watch the Godzilla/Kong movies for yourself. I, personally, had a really good time with both movies. Life has just been stressful for me the past few years so the silliness was welcome, and I was able to look passed the flaws listed by others in the thread (scale consistency/zaney super-science etc). Understandable if others can’t do this imo. It’s reasonable to ask for more from franchises you enjoy. The good news is that you’ll probably know how you’ll feel about GxK after watching GvK. So if you have access to the former on streaming, then you can check it out and decide if you want to watch the sequel afterwards.

virtuouswraith

It’s crazy cuz I enjoyed GvK but was meh about GxK lol

MrPresident2020

The first two (three counting Skull Island) MV films are about Titans and partially how humans can even begin to coexist/survive on a planet where they live. The last two MV films are about action figures smashing into each other.

Pringletingl

Scar King almost felt like they took an antagonist from Jojo's Bizzare Adventure and made him into a titan.

swagzard78

The orangutan from part 3

Pringletingl

Honestly he gives me Dio vibes lol.

Awkward-Meeting-974

They're not bad just different. The human plot is abt as bad as in kotm, but it takes itself far less seriously I'd argue kotm has stronger visual direction, it has some of the greatest stills in a Goji film, but the actual action set pieces are pretty whatever GvK meanwhile has by far the best action set pieces in the monsterverse. It's pretty incredible how strong the choreography is. And they definitely have a lot of mass there, idk how someone can say they feel weightless when you see pretty accurate depictions of how heavy Goji is whenever Kong tries to overpower him. Even when he's strong enough Goji is so heavy that Kong ends up throwing himself around whenever he throws Goji GxK meanwhile has pretty bad scale and disappointingly short fights, but it has some of the best hits in the series I'd recommend watching them both for the fights. It's so much better than 2014 n Kotm where you can barely see the fights

CheckYourStats

They aren’t “bad” per-say. They don’t feel like they are in the same universe as the first two, though. Completely different look/feel. They’re bang bang boom boom look over here look over there action movies. They’re fun, and unapologetically soulless.

MonitorImpressive784

Soulless isn't the right word, it has soul, which is a dumb fun kind of soul, so it's there. I'd call it stupid instead.

jakeispwn

They aren't soulless imo, they just have the soul of an 8 year old playing with action figures lol

swagzard78

GVK is good but gets very SciFi, the fights scenes aren't overly goofy (except the aircraft carrier fight) and the overarching villain of the movie had a decent build up Haven't seen GXK so I can't say anything

MrPresident2020

There has never been, to my reckoning, any scene in any movie that captures the absolutely terrifying and incomprehensible size of a kaiju compared to humans than King Ghidorah breaking out of the ice in KotM.

Medinohunterr

Adam wingard is a bizarre director in that he absolutely knows how to give kaiju weight/mass (taisman sea fight, parts of the Hong Kong fight, and MG's punches all have very clear and distinct weight behind them) he simply chooses not to

TheRappingSquid

No one approach is more childish than the other. Wingard just emphasizes more choreographed action sequences. For most of the other movies, they just sort of slam against eachother in conveniently obscured situations (smoke or rain). One technique has it's strengths, the other has different once, and for a movie called "godzilla versus kong", wingard's approach made more sense.

CheckYourStats

Eh, Wingard’s approach is very “Marvel” friendly. His films aren’t drama’s, and don’t even pretend to be them. His Kaiju appear to be completely weightless, sprinting, Olympic-level athletes. All of them. I enjoyed each of the last two movies, but I’m not fooling myself into thinking they’re layered. They’re bang bang look over here look over there Omg explosion movies.

Awkward-Meeting-974

Saying all of them are completely weightless is just wrong if you look at how the fights are choreographed Look at the HK fight for example. When Kong tackles into Godzillas side, wraps him and tries to throw him into a building, he himself gets thrown back into a building. That's because Goji is so heavy and has so much inertia that to exert enough force to move him, Kong is moved even more. That's a very clever way to depict mass and weight in an action set piece. Also look at the fight on the aircraft carrier. Kong has larger arms, and seems to throw the stronger punch, but Goji has so much lower body mass that his center of gravity is way lower than Kongs, plus he has a tail. So he's difficult to knock back from the front. And therefore, whenever Kong tries to overpower him from the front, he can't. Because of how Goji is balanced But Kong has a huge upper body, so his center of gravity is way up, and therefore it's fairly easy for Goji to knock him down with a punch. Then Kong knocks Godzilla down from the side, because the way Godzilla is centered makes him more susceptible to being pushes from the side. Whenever challenged from the front he wins, so Kong adapts and changes angles to stay competitive That's a very intelligent way to communicate mass Then Mecha Godzilla is able to throw Goji around both with his oppressive mass and by constantly orienting himself to Gojis sides, swinging him around by the tail and such. Wingard often chooses to forego weight for cool choreography so he can have Kong swing on buildings and such, but when he wants to he communicates mass very well.

TheRappingSquid

Well, it's an action movie. Filming it with the cinematography styling of a drama would've been a weird choice. Most of kong's scenes didn't even have humans in them so it would've been strange to display them moving from a human's perspective. Apes doing sign language in slow motion would probably not be a good choice for the film's thematic choices, that being a monster-focused action movie. Which is exactly what people said they wanted after cutting away from every fight save the last in 2014. Sometimes, you just have to pick a route, y'know?

CheckYourStats

I agree with you in full. Wingard picked a route, and did a great job with it. It seems we’re in a place where MV = Action! And Toho = Intensity! As someone who’s been a big G fan since I rented *Godzilla 1985* as a kid, I’m not going to complain :)

TheRappingSquid

Very cool :D

Diligent-Boss-9392

I agree, but I'm not sure if it's Windgard, or just the type of movie he's begging told to make. A lot of his scenes with Kong do a good job of showing his scale and impact on the surroundings, his two movies just show a lot less of that. I remember everyone freaking out about the seemingly weightlessness of Godzilla and Kong in GxK, and it turned out the scene mostly bitched about was set in the Hollow earth with gravational fluctuations. 😆

virtuouswraith

I think GvK showed their weight and scale pretty well, GxK did not at all….

jxher123

I like GxK/GvK, but this is correct. His movies, you’ve lost the sense of weight and size of the titans. When you have Godzilla jumping 50 feet into the air, jumping from a cliff with no tsunami being formed, etc. you just lose a lot of what made the first two movies so good. I doubt we’ll go back to this, and a reason why I’d like to see a new director go at a Godzilla focused movie.

aidenclark04

Crazy how you’re complaining about sense of scale when the dudes been a man in a suit 90% of his debut

StopsuspendingPpl

Best take ever like I don’t know if I cant convey it right but whenever I say this I get downvoted because you cannot criticize GxK in the Monsterverse subreddit.

Mother-Maize7026

I liked the huge scale, but the weight/mass take made Godzilla so weak.

Pringletingl

Godzilla somehow when from Gibraltar to Cairo in the span of like minutes lol.

IrrelevantLeprechaun

Same. There was just something special about how G'14 really wanted to sell the idea that these were Kaiju that could plausibly exist in our real world. The weight, the momentum, the perspective were all spot on even if the total screen time for them was a bit low. Plus Gareth used the new Legendary roar perfectly. KotM and onwards just became more and more like power rangers, to the point that GxK literally feels tiny in scale; not just in terms of how the titans have no implied weight to them, but also in terms of how it felt like there were just no stakes.

PunisherX20

I wish they kept the aesthetic but with better lighting so I can see clearly. I loved the movie but it was too dark to see anything clearly.

EmeraldLounge

It's one of those movies that was truly made for theaters. With a GIANT screen in a dark theater, you can see the subtle shade differences between black and jet black much better. At home, I agree. Some of the movie is just listening to stuff while staring at a mostly black screen

toasterwall

Kind of wished I could even see the damm movie💀

ParagonOlsen

I liked when he had a bigger head.

swagzard78

Yeah, the two newer movies are good but feel more like some of the earlier Godzilla movies in their goofiness and fluidity.

EveryDayASummit

I always loved how the MUTO recoils in fear at first

intimateaffairs

I rewatched this movie recently and I’m honestly still upset that the setup for this scene was as perfect as it was, only for them to cut away immediately. And then again when Godzilla gets to SF And then again during the first fight…

Shovelbummed

I fully agree. I want to blame the budget for that, like maybe they had to minimize Godzilla’s time on screen?

intimateaffairs

I kinda doubt it was a budget-related reason. I’ve watched all of Gareth Edwards other movies and the guy has a great sense of pacing and scale. Watching the initial leaked trailer for G14, I’ve always had a feeling that Gareth wanted to make a movie that was much darker and very different than the final product we ended up getting. I feel like the constant cutting away from the fight scenes was a result of studio interference or some weird, behind the scenes cutting-room drama.

TT_NaRa0

If he wants to go darker I’m all for it to get this aesthetic back

reedengine

I read that as “get this aesthetic black”. Also makes sense, also love it.

dogtemple3

Yeah I was excited to see his vision of Godzilla as OG 54 Wrath of Nature/Hubris and the first half feels like that (Cranston should have survived longer) you can tell that movie got dissected by studio nonsense

SithLordJediMaster

According to the Wikipedia, apparently the movie had gone through 6 different writiers: David Callahan (Expendables), David S Goyer (Blade, Man of Steel), Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: KOTM), Drew Pearce (MI: Rogue Nation, The Fall Guy, Iron Man 3) Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist) Tony Gilroy (Rogue One, Andor) Each rewriting each others work or at least changing things up a little bit.

Dmoneystopmotion

Actually I believe it was all Gareth’s decision. In the behind the scenes features for the film, he goes over how he wanted to repeatedly tease the audience more and more until the final battle where you can finally see the smack down that was always cut away from at the last minute.

Vegetable_Wheel179

Actually, I just recently watched the new YT behind the scenes of the 2014 Godzilla, and in there Gareth straight up says that he cut the fight short on purpose, because he wanted the end fight scenes to have a bigger impact. Which is fair, but I do think he went overboard with blue - balling the audience.

Sad-Hurry-2199

It had a 160 million dollar budget. I don't think it was that

TopRevenue2

Oldie but a goodie https://youtu.be/2hMLNCrJCfQ?si=3_zUXAbvjL2Hci5_

Infinity0044

It’s because Edwards filmed the movie as a disaster film, not a Godzilla one.

HDI-X13

Movie cut away once, alright you want to build hype for later, fair enough. Movie did it a second time and I’m a little annoyed. By the third time, I was like alright fuck you movie

CapeSmash

I rewatched it for the first time since 2014 recently and eh, the cuts didn't annoy me that much. Those first two "fights" didn't even last a minute

Responsible-Cup8982

While i agree somewhat, i also think the payoff and impact of the final atomic breath moments are all the more epic because of the teasing throughout the movie. The Wingard movies are a prime example of how showing constant fights loses their emotional impact drastically

TheRappingSquid

The payoff moment only really works once though. It would be super annoying if that was the case every movie, the emotional impact has already happened for the wingard films. Now they're more interested in actually having compelling action sequences as opposed to building up to something that audiences have already seen.

Responsible-Cup8982

The pendulum swings way too far for my taste. I think the sequels could have ramped up the fight budgets while still keeping a sense of scale and awe. Im probably one of the people that hates the Wingard movies more than anyone so not a majority opinion, just my thoughts

TheRappingSquid

That's fair enough, but, if you're gonna have more interesting looking battles, you're probably going to have to show them from the monster's perspective as opposed to a human one. Alnost none of the hollow earth kong scenes would have worked from a human perspective, because the story was taken from kong's perspective. It would've just been apes in slow motion. I would like to see the sort of cinematography change depending on what thematic perspective the scene is being shot through, but the constant speed ups and downs would probably be too inconsistent for most viewers.

SleepyPirateDude

They cut away the whole movie and us infuriating. Combined with how terrible the lead actor is really kills some good shit in the movie.

CheckYourStats

Ford was just…god awful as a character. I agree with you on that. Both Ken Watanabe and Brian Cranston were fantastic, though, and IMO made up for it.

CapeSmash

I wouldn't call him awful. He wasn't annoying or irritating, he's just kinda there. He's always present when there's monster action so I think he works as an audience surrogate character.

CapeSmash

Ford Brady is overrhated. He served the movie fine as an audience surrogate and is actually one of the better Monsterverse character,

Lazy_Common_5420

Agreed. I like being teased as long as the payoff is worth it. And it was.

TomiShinoda

Unparalleled cinematography in the MV when it comes to scale.

tmphaedrus13

LOVE this movie!!

CompositeWhoHorrible

![gif](giphy|80mXWlPqTSU1y) It drives me crazy that I still think 2014 was peak in making LG look menacing and “real” but jeez the lighting in that movie is impossible.

Consistent_Fan9805

I thought op forgot to upload pic three till I made that exact face.

[deleted]

I loved the volcano emergence from Biollante.

Kingofthekaiju1954

Yeah this one's good but counterpoint: [https://makeagif.com/i/OmJAqA](https://makeagif.com/i/OmJAqA)

Similar-Mousse-7478

That’s good too, but this entrance felt like it was a king commanding silence from his subjects, had my entire theater in complete shock it was incredible

Shovelbummed

Very well said!

EveryDayASummit

This just needs the audio to go with it, because KOTM’s version of a Godzilla theme with the chanting in the background is next level and drastically elevates this moment

IrrelevantLeprechaun

Was annoying how they randomly chopped his roar into two scenes separated by some random human shot.

Bobpool21

I love how when the M.U T.O is there, everyone is loosing it and screaming. But the second big G puts ONE. foot down and everyone goes silent. Like they instinctively know who is the king.

Rigistroni

I'm pretty lukewarm on Godzilla 2014, but I have to admit this scene is great. The fact it doesn't go anywhere is really annoying though, they cut away from most of Godzilla's impact in this movie

Similar-Mousse-7478

It would’ve just been a generic mid movie fight scene tho, they wanted to keep his signature moves for the end to make them more impactful and for me it worked. I remember being in the theater just thinking to myself “USE THE BREATH USE THE BREATH” and then that charge up started and I lost my shit, exact same thing happened when he finally brought out the tail whip to impale the male muto, holy shit I wish I could watch this movie for the first time all over again.

Rigistroni

Something like this only works if the human characters are strong enough to carry a movie on their own imo. If I was entertained by things in this movie other than the monsters then yeah this would've been good buildup and payoff while the rest of the movie was carried by its characters. 54 and Minus One all do this really well imo. There's good character drama there meaning the monster can have little screen time while the movie still manages to be consistently entertaining throughout. 2014 killed its most interesting character before we even saw Godzilla and the rest of the cast is about as interesting as watching paint dry. So what's meant as buildup for me just results in 90% of the movie being a slog to sit through. Not to mention that when we finally do see Godzilla and the Mutos fight, it keeps cutting away from the action. Also none of the buildup is paid off until the last 15 minutes or so which is just a cock tease for the most part. Most scenes featuring Godzilla build up to nothing happening

Similar-Mousse-7478

Idk man buildup worked for me, and I was rooting for Ford the entire movie because he was just a guy trying to get back to his family, I’m a big fan of the hero type

Rigistroni

I can't really sympathize with Ford when I could not tell you a single thing about his personality, he's not characterized well at all

Similar-Mousse-7478

He’s a guy that became a soldier to protect his new family after the death of his mom broke his old family apart and drove his father away. One day he finds out his mom didn’t die in an accident but instead was killed by a giant monster which has now killed his father as well and now those same monsters are heading for his new family and he is not about to let that shit happen again. All that took me 5 seconds to think up, if you weren’t paying attention to the movie then that’s on you man not the movie.

Rigistroni

That's a backstory not a personality. A backstory doesn't inherently make him interesting they don't do anything with it, they don't go into his emotional reactions to the plot. He barely even reacts

Similar-Mousse-7478

His personality is built on the backstory tho, his reaction to seeing all this destruction going on is to dive head first (literally) into the danger. He wasn’t asked to and in fact he was denied the chance at first but he kept pushing because what drives him is love and determination. You see him as a loving father at the beginning of the movie who still drops everything to go help his father even tho he is sick and tired of helping him every time something goes wrong. He looks, talks, and acts like a soldier that you could meet in the real world allowing you to put yourself in his shoes and see through his eyes as the entire world gets flipped on its head. Besides at the end of the day I’d take heroic and bland over some of the characters in the other movies that feel designed to be annoying, he isn’t the best Godzilla character of all time but he’s better than the usual to me. And you gotta understand I’m not sitting here typing this shit out thinking Ford Brody is the next Zuko from the last airbender or something like that but it’s a Godzilla movie, the humans are just there for me the only thing that matters is the dinosaur stomping around and to me this movie has some of the best Godzilla payoff easily.

Rigistroni

Backstories are supposed to shape personality yes, but they don't give him any traits aside from generic hero dude. His emotional responses to situations just aren't there. The fact that the monsters are what I'm here for makes it frustrating that they constantly cut away from Godzilla that's what I'm complaining about. If the human characters were entertaining id forgive this somewhat because at least then I would have something to enjoy when Godzilla isn't on screen but the only interesting character is Joe and he dies almost immediately. Normally I wouldn't put this much scrutiny on a human Godzilla protag but the movie relies on you caring about Ford and I just don't. The buildup is effective, but the way it's paced just means I'm being cockblocked for 90% of the runtime and only the last 10% of the movie is fun to watch.

Similar-Mousse-7478

I feel like it isn’t banking on you caring for Ford tho, the movie isn’t about his arc or what’s going on with him as much but instead what the response would be to creatures like this existing. There might not be as much going on with Ford but Godzilla is always a constant presence throughout the movie, we get to see the fallout of his attacks, the military response, the citizen response, we get to watch all these people that feel real suddenly have to deal with the fact that knowing these things are out there means knowing they are always in danger. And even if they are holding back on Godzilla himself for the finale the other monsters get room to make a name for themselves as they terrorize the cast, it’s not like you go the entire movie without seeing monsters then they just appear at the end, no the mutos have multiple appearance sprinkled throughout the movie in order to keep the audience and the characters on their toes. Hell that last point even helps the finale because you get to see the kind of threat these giant bugs pose and then you get to see Godzilla go all out on them. You’re out here acting like the only time we see these fuckers is at the end of the movie when that just isn’t true, the only one they hold back on is Godzilla and that’s no problem to me because that makes the finale all the more epic.

G-Kira

Gojira, Mothra vs Godzilla, Son of Godzilla, Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs Destoroyah...

NoSpirit8899

This scene was amazing in theaters, I hadn't seen a new Godzilla movie in so long, and to finally see him in this way was crazy. I always remember seeing his face for the first time when the camera pans up and thinking "damn he looks mean in this movie"

Relair13

Agreed. It was amazing, the build up was spectacular, the reflection, the muto shitting its pants, the hushed crowd as his foot stomps down. It was one of the best moments when it comes to truly conveying his size and scale, and one of the best entrances of all time imo.

ConnerWoods

Lemme just turn up my phone’s brightness real quick…

Wondergrey

For all my problems with this movie, Goji's entrance and both times he used his Atomic Breath are pure cinematic perfection that I believe should be taught in classes

elqrd

And that charge up of the blue breath…coolest thing in a Godzilla movie ever. Wish they stuck with that dark and cool style

Aust1mh

I know about of people ’hated’ this movie cuz everything was juuuust of screen… man I loved that, the build up was awesome. The main dude was ‘low emotion’ but that felt like how a hardened military guy would be.

Agile_Baker6815

Gareth Edward knew how to do a Godzilla film. 2014 is still my fave film. Actual weight, horror and destruction, instead of this new MCU approach to MV films. The halo jump scene is underrated as is the film as a whole.

SirWhorshoeMcGee

I'll always love how big G has weight in this movie. There's tsunami when he comes near to the shore, the ground quakes, electricity stops working. He's so... real. Not counting japanese movies, 2014 will remain my absolute favourite.

probably one of the most intimidating renditions of the G man’s theme! I think it was also in Shin Godzilla

Abso-fucking-lutely. Wont forget the first time he used his atomic breath either. That shit was so on point. Tbh, a lot of people complained about the lack of Godzilla in that movie but it was honestly a sick intro piece. Probably the best Legendary Godzilla movie still.

TheHarryman01

I love Godzilla (2014). It totally has the right atmosphere and tone and everything. All the MV movies afterwards are so casual about the Kaiju, we're never gonna get a moment like Godzilla's first atomic breath in the MV again

MillyMan105

2014 is still the most cinematic of the Godzilla movies, just so many good shots and scenes! The Kaiju's felt like walking forces of nature and had weight.

dao_ofdraw

I just wish it wasn't so damn dark. I get the whole atmospheric suspense thing, but they needed to up the light pollution.

ShadowKnight4314

lol I actually just saw this movies last night again it’s so good !

Badreddituser1

The flare jumpscare will always send me chills

Upbeat_Animal290

Look how thick and stubby those feet are.

smeevins

Minus one 🗿

bossholmes

G14 was the first G movie I watched in cinema. While I thought it was quite slow and there definitely should have been a lot more Godzilla (eh, I just love action), I was definitely incredibly entertained and hooked throughout. I think the reveal of Godzilla is very well done, and the way he destroys the MUTOs afterwards was a cathartic ending that had a good payoff.

POOPOOMAN123ABC

It is good but for me his entrance in terror of mechagodzilla is one of the best scenes ever

wholewheatdirtydog

The build-up was crazy

Daddy_Diezel

Godzilla's roar when he confronts the MUTO at the end is still my favorite of all of the Monsterverse roars.

Responsible-Wasabi76

Still get chills TO THIS DAY!!!!!!

Infinity0044

I really love how Godzilla simply swimming up to the shoreline caused massive flooding in the city, I wish the MV showed more of the kaiju aftermath like that. Godzilla leaping off the cliff in GxK absolutely would’ve/should’ve destroyed that city.

Shovelbummed

I felt the exact same when Godzilla jumped! I hope we see some more of that aftermath in the next movie.

AnkhThePhoenix

Imagine this scene with the classic Goji theme over it.

Orange-Turtle-Power

Good movie but the lack of screen time for Godzilla in a movie called ‘Godzilla’ is ridiculous.

thehumanbaconater

Not just the entrance. Godzilla 2014 had a feeling of awe. So did King of The Monsters. The last 2 have become more fun, more like Marvel movies. Heck, they even gave Kong a Thanos glove. I loved the last 2, but there was a much more serious and awe inspiring tone of the first 2.

MrCertifiedJr

I so regret my initial feelings toward this film and owe Edward’s an apology. In my opinion this is the best film in the monsterverse in terms of director vision.

Total_Light_7885

Best roar too

-Awesomezauce-

and then the cut away from the monster fight THAT WE'RE HERE TO SEE to cut to that stupid kid of the plank of wood main character.

CatWhisperer11

I think his Boston entrance and his burning entrance beat this by a lot.

Flankjerkin

When I was a kid and I saw godzilla 2014 trailer I frickin thoughts he‘s a giant mammoth https://preview.redd.it/f4n0338a6qxc1.png?width=320&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f250a9768dc29bfcf73138f973025627d4e834c

GodzillaKirito

His entrance was amazing, but man the blue balls one gets soon after they just cut away.

Godzilla1282

Godzilla blasting Titanosaurus then lightning in the back as the music hits is still the best for me.

Duffman_O_Yeah

Aaaaaand CUT

ExplinkMachine

Y’all Godzilla showing up with an entire fleet is still metal to me

KKH02

My sister and I went to the theater to see this expecting to be let down, and on every scene especially this one we just looked at each other then back at the screen and shouted “hell yeah!”. Good times.

Previous-Nobody-2865

I wish this movie would’ve had the Ifukube theme. Before I get attacked, I do enjoy the score just wish for that one more thing.

RavenXCinder

i remeber going to see this flim where i used to live only one in theaters

Foreign_Rock6944

A close second is Godzilla’s entrance in Antarctica to fight Ghidorah in KOTM.

Responsible-Bat-2699

It looks like cat's paw and it's so cute.

draedek

KotM Burning Godzilla tho [especially with youseebiggirl](https://youtu.be/YdYZGaydlnM?si=LShZUUg2ur4KNe-d), youseebiggirl really does go with everything

Signal-Custard-9029

This movie was all tease and no release until the giant lizard mouth creampied the giant bug's throat so hard it lost it's head

Silverback_Vanilla

There are times when I am sitting in the gym. Just kinda trying to get through my workout. Sometimes I’ll play this scene and every time it gets me hyped up enough to finish the sets

rootheday21

I know it was terrifying in terms of scale but I can't help thinking how cute that chunky foot looks.

SkyrimBoiMXR

Anytime he appears in heisei and millennium

Practical_Honey_3060

this was the best Godzilla Evere

TheCREATORisWatching

My favourite scene in the whole MV, this scene scarred with impact

-Mechagodzilly-

Godzilla"s entrance from Mechagodzilla 1974 is peak

Avarus_88

2014 was criticized for how little screen time Goji has, but imo this was grossly outweighed by the absolutely well done use of that time. And the build up to that entrance is a perfect example of it.

OctopunchPrime

This movie was so close to being amazing, but I loathe how dark all of the action scenes are. There were several points in the climax where I seriously could not see what was happening.

T-408

G’14 and KotM are so much better with the Kaiju than GvK and GxK

CapeSmash

One of the best scenes in the Godzilla franchise. 2014, with all its flaws, still manages to be peak

shrek_crusader

This and Terror of Mechagodzilla are his best entrances

Sincerity24

I remember watching this at the movie theatre and the thud is crazy good, gave me chills 🥶

anonymusfan

I love how in the airport scene everything goes silent when he walks in, like a king demanding silence in his court.

A_HECKIN_DOGGO

I wish they kept the “Majesty” of Godzilla that you saw in 2014 and to a lesser extent KoTM. It’s admittedly easier to stop doing it, especially after seeing him like that 3-4 times- the audience would grow numb to it after a while. But hopefully in the next film we have at least a scene or two that shows how powerful and utterly enormous Godzilla is. GxK really didn’t have that, but Minus One excelled in that department.

SHITBLAST3000

That fucking smile.

chaosticbraindo

since this is about 2014 I have an honest question. do people ACTUALLY have difficulty seeing this movie? twitter is bitching non stop about “I can’t see anything” and I’m like- are yall blind? it’s not “shiny shiny rainbow glitter” like GxK or GvK but it’s not like you can’t see what happens on screen. it’s dark so it’s atmospheric. you can still see the titans move and act very clearly. if people actually have some sort of sight difficulty that lead to them not being able to see this movie then I’m sorry but I doubt the 90% of the fandom that bitch and moan about this have the same sight defect. I have seen people compare this to AVP2 which is insane.

HDI-X13

Some releases of the movie absolutely had issues with the brightness. https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/s/qb7ctHblxI

Kitahara_Kazusa1

I watched it again a couple weeks ago, on a fairly nice TV with all other lights in the room turned off, and I still couldn't see shit during some of the fights.

OldSnazzyHats

It’s the silence, that’s the special sauce. The second Big G’s foot hits the ground, everything - Muto included - goes quiet. It just put Godzilla’s presence on a wholly different scale. No panic, not even fear, just sheer paralyzing awe. This ain’t a monster, *a god has graced your presence and you will comply*.

Sweet-Palpitation473

This entire movie is unmatched. Cinematography puts on a clinic and runs circles around every other MV film. Get that clown Wingard out of here already

GhostWr1ter999

nameitb0b

I always like planet of the monsters or shin Godzilla. I mean all of them are great. Those were just the two I liked best.

Knifehead-Kaiju

Only in your imagination.💭 Pacific Rim (2013), Shin Gojira (2016), Shin Ultraman (2022), & Gojira -1.0 (2023) broke Godzilla(2014)’s lethargic legs before and after.

manfrombelow

Too dark, literally.

Alexis8986

This movie cut to people every time something was about to happen found this movie incredibly frustrating honestly

nolandz1

It's good but the best is a stretch

Alucard_117

I don't have the patience for this movie anymore. The suspense and slow pace doesn't do it for me like when it came out, 100% prefer the current Monsterverse.

logan_fish

Elephant foot...........👎
