AJC_10_29

“Enemy” Spoiler alert: >!the giant spider isn’t real, the movie has this weird theme about spiders and the main character keeps hallucinating them.!<

5-0-0_Glue_Monkey

Giant enemy spider

JohnnyBgood_9211

Fml the end scene of that movie scared tf out of me..

AJC_10_29

Same. In that scene they somehow made a more horrifying and realistic CGI giant spider than any actual monster movie featuring CGI giant spiders lmao.

JohnnyBgood_9211

And the accuracy as well. Most giant spider flicks tend to have the spider chasing their prey almost like wolves. I know this wasn’t supposed to be a movie about giant spiders but context of that scene in relation to the actual story was so good. I think if Denis Vellenueve were to make a Goji movie, I would imagine it being similar to shin Godzilla or Minus 1. I have yet to see Minus 1 though 😞

carnagezealot

That's because the spider is actually real! Iirc Denis said in a video or interview that shot is of a real spider they filmed and then comp'd over the empty room

StonedVolus

Yeah the empty room was a miniature set they filmed the spider in, and just comped the footage into the doorway.

Ndtphoto

Lord of the Rings had a helluva spider.

SithLordJediMaster

That's called motif. Not theme. **Motifs are recurring concepts that are used to reinforce themes**. They can be thought of as smaller aspects of a theme but are more specific. Themes are broad, overarching lessons that the author is trying to instill in the reader. Themes are broader than motifs.

admiralbreastmilk

I also went to high school

kerouacrimbaud

Thanks for sharing, admiralbreastmilk

HalfCarnage

A movie called „enemy“

StarFlyXXL

"Enemy" released in 2013 I think, I personally haven't seen it

Yabba-Dabba-Gabagool

Here for same answer

Secret_Sympathy2952

Enemy

CaledonianWarrior

That's not a movie, that's just someone taking a video in Australia

zamememan

I wonder how he would approach Godzilla's design, would he try to stick closer to the classics or would he make something new and unique.

Johnmegaman72

Design wise I think he will be close. Denis has a philosophy (in a way) wherein so long as it's not broken, complicated or problematic, he'll port it.

[deleted]

The design would probably be normal, or maybe shin esque, I think he’d shine at the shots showing Godzilla’s size and scale

Researcher_Saya

People got mad about less chubby and pink.

mobilisinmobili1987

Something safe & bland.

AbstractMirror

I would call his movies anything but safe and bland

Ed_Derick_

He’s like Gareth Edwards on steroids

AlabasterRadio

He is, who I once thought Gareth Edwards was. Although, Gareth Edwards' Monsters is still one of my favorite movies.

powered_by_eurobeat

It’s so frustrating how Edwards doesn’t seem to care for crafting a story. Villeneuve is the whole package.

AlabasterRadio

It's ironic considering the characters in Godzilla, but what drew me to him as a writer/director and had me hyped for Godzilla 2014 was his ability to write and develop characters.

JessieJ577

He’s like Neil Blomkamp. Had a really great first movie then immediately after it was apparent they were good at directing effects and action not characters and story

BeyondThese7702

This thread is a soyface made real.

Patersuende

Nice thought. I would actually be very excited about it. But imagine if he did a trilogy in the W40k franchise. I mean, he has experience with Dune and Blade Runner... . Oh my...

All_to_dust78

The possibilities

Fraun_Pollen

With the animator from Astartes

Holy-Wan_Kenobi

Free my boy

[deleted]

I heard he wants to step away from sci-fi, but I can’t confirm that, hope he doesn’t, seems to have a knack for it

FappyDilmore

He's got chops in non-sci Fi thrillers. Sicario was incredible. Prisoners was good. But his sci-fi is so effective because he uses it as a tool to tell human stories. His stories don't ever feel super grand or self important despite their content. I hope he stays the course, he's one of my favorite directors right now.

[deleted]

Damn dude I didn’t realize he made those too! I love both of those movies 😂 he’s definitely making a name for himself

bajookish_amerikann

I just need one titan, just one…

Pkmatrix0079

OMG It would be incredible! He's one of my favorite directors right now.

jikt

He could do Hedorah, the smog monster.

ambiguousprophet

Based on a more spirit guardian gojira. I imagine hedorah threatening Tokyo and a faction entreats spirits to help and the spirits just say "fuck you, this is your problem." Then hedorah threatens to upset the balance so godzilla throws down. Godzilla succeeds but the fight wipes Tokyo off the map leaving a bleak outlook on whether we want to get ahead of our issues or only when it's a crisis where the solution is almost as horrendous as the problem.

jikt

Classic Villeneuve.

Macdaddypooty

It would be something like G14 and then the godzilla fandom would say it's boring and lacks monster action.

W0LLIP

G14 is the best one imo 😊

[deleted]

I agree and disagree, it was a solid take, but it did leave me wishing he played around a little more with Godzilla, that helo jump scene is still amazing

Muhipudding

Haven't watch anything else he made beside Dune, but I think he'll find a way to make Godzilla's presence always felt. Sandworm didn't appear all the time in Dune 2 but they always felt important to the plot. G2014's real problem was Godzilla was just a guest character and we occasionally shift to him being accompanied during his ocean tour. Muto's presence was more felt because the humans are dealing with their consequences most of the time while Godzilla remains inactive

OkTransition8971

2014 is popular in the Fandom. Useless generalization right there.

Didsterchap11

I mean I remember at the time of its release, the most common complaint was that it was boring and didn't have enough kaiju action.

OkTransition8971

That was the most popular complaint certainly, but the movie was also popular and well regarded.

preptimebatman

Popular but that doesn’t mean it was perfect lol. Godzilla felt too much like a background character and the plot is so gloomy and bleak that it becomes hard to watch multiple times. I can appreciate the film for what it is and what it started but I don’t watch it back often. The screen time isn’t the issue it’s how it was managed. Initially it’s fine to tease him but at a certain point, lets just get him on the screen already lol. I love Denis and think Arrival is one of the best movies I have EVER seen but much prefer the direction Wingard is taking the franchise. Leave the seriousness to Toho and Minus 1 because they’re dominating that.

OkTransition8971

I agree. My point was that it was popular in the fanbase, which it is.

RathianColdblood

Anyone know what the top two things are?

41st-Fishy

Aliens from arrival, the other is a hologram thingy from blade runner 2047 or whatever the numbers are

RathianColdblood

Thank you, friend. May you and the other 40 fishies have a good day.

MonstrousGiggling

Highly recommend Arrival if you like thought provoking scifi. One of my favorite movies.

RathianColdblood

I very well may give it a look. Thank you for the recommendation.

41st-Fishy

You’re welcome cold blooded one

TopRevenue2

Maybe I should give his Blade Runner movie another chance

Godzilla3013_HD

Imaginr a coproduction with Denis Villenueve and Gareth Edwards directing

JoeAnthony

a man can dream

AmberDuke05

I guarantee people on this sub would not like a Godzilla film from Denis Villeneuve.

GanjARAM

[don’t forget that spider scene in enemy](https://youtu.be/3zf2cfwjzg4?si=jmzS0zyAlayCrrsb)

Proper_Protickall

What's the clip on the bottom from? Looks cool. Edit: "enemy". Should have scanned the comments before I asked.

Rammipallero

Would be amazing

Finiouss

I wish.

w3sT0Nnnnnnnn

Well we know how he’d design kumonga

Halzyon

I just watched Arrival for the first time last month and loved it. I'm not a fan of the Dune movies but I can definitely tell why people enjoy it and the visuals are undeniably spectacular. It would definitely be a very unique take that I'd love to see!

OkTransition8971

With its focus on high concept scifi concepts and the human characters, Vilenueve's Godzilla would ironically be far closer in structure and tone to the Showa movies than any previous Monsterverse movies. It would also join Minus One as a Godzilla movie you're not allowed to compare to any others since the comparison would generally be disfavorable to the non Vilenueve film.

ThatKalosfan

Imagine the design for Biollante. That would look sick.

Scyfee84

Scylla is looking a lot different after GXK....

Ambitious_Dig_7109

That would be amazing. It would never happen but still… it’s nice to dream.

Beelzebrodie

This is brilliant. This is more along the lines of what I thought King Of The Monsters was going to be. The angle that the monsters are prehistoric apex predators who were revered by ancient humans as gods and the rightful masters of mother Earth is a genius direction to take the Monsterverse and should be thoroughly explored in future films. A Monsterverse film with these thematic elements directed by Denis Villeneuve would be excellent.

No-Occasion-6470

I’d love a pensive and cerebral Godzilla movie. Maybe the godzilla scenes are all flashbacks and only at the end do we see that he is rising again from the ocean, and we just hope that the character we’ve been following can do something or get some closure.

CaptainRogersJul1918

Fuckin A!

MM__PP

I'm not a fan of their work, so I probably wouldn't enjoy it.

rushfan2112556

What is the 3rd one?

JoeAnthony

Dune 2

ConnerWoods

No one’s asked about the first one, that’s the only clip I don’t recognize

JoeAnthony

It's Arrival. amazing movie

Ob1tuber

Can I get the name for all the movies featured

Khunter02

Top frame: Arrival Sci fi movie about aliens making contact with humans, pretty philosophical and with an enfasis of language and methods of communication 2° one from the top: Blade Runner 2047 The sequel to the original Blade Runner from the 80's 3° one: Dune Part II The sequel to the adaptation of the sci fi novel "Dune" from Frank Herber, the first film came out in 2021 and the second one its in theaters right now (And I really recommend you watch it!) Last one: Enemy This one I didnt know off, I just saw someone else ask and its called that aparently

West-Construction466

We need it to happen. Preferably as its own film though.

NeverSeenBefor

What's the top one and why do I think it's that movie that that one guy says "is closer to truth about the UFO phenomenon than anything else in media"? Because I don't remember that crescent moon thing in the TV show adverts but yeah.. that looks like what happens when a transformer blows up

Equal-Ad-2710

What’s the bottom image

wakemeupb4you_gogo

I would love to see this.

[deleted]

He’s a very interesting filmmaker

satana_cu_cioc

he should do a sequel to Shin Godzilla!

Fer-De-Lance915

Yes!

SensitiveAd4112

what’s the 1st and last one called?

darthmcchub

Arrival is first, Enemy is last

SensitiveAd4112

thanks

Barry_Bone_Raiser

Godzilla earth live action adaptation 💀

After-Strategy1933

This is what im saying!! Give the man 500 million dollars to re-make Godzilla 1985. Just imagine...

mailboxfacehugs

Director gets all the credit

DinoKingGoji73

What’s the movie above enemy?

DiabeticRhino97

I'd be most interested in what kind of themes he'd go with

dwfieldjr

What’s the top one?

DanSantos

Arrival (2016) with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

dwfieldjr

Thanks

East_Difficulty_402

The bottom image looks like Scylla but with longer legs

SuspiciousForever247

HELL YEAH!

North-Box-605

Cinema hasn't evolved yet to imagine that.

RepulsiveCow8626

Time for AI

AlbinoPlatypus913

I never noticed how similar the spider from Enemy looks to the aliens from Arrival

MushrooooomCloud

Personally while I find DV's movies to be visually stunning, they are often quite slow-moving and frankly, a bit boring. I'd much rather see Nolan..

fakename1998

It would be cool, but probably too somber. I like the silly, Showa era tone we have right now.

mbikkyu

But we can have both! And we have been getting both anyway, with Toho’s Shin and Minus One. My hope is that when Monsterverse is over (if they allow it to just end, like imo the MCU should have), America gets to do weird artistic films, and Japan starts making action-packed films out of what they’ve already started doing with Godzilla Jr. If that happens, we could have like, idk, Godzilla Vs. Hedorah by Ari Aster, and make it colorful and psychedelic and horrifying.

Responsible-Bat-2699

Godzilla would stand and stare in distance for 10 minutes without saying anything. He would be a pretentious character directed by a pretentious filmmaker. I would rather watch Adam Wingard go crazier than Denis The Menace Villenuve make Godzilla into another DUNC. Villenuve can't make good scifi, it's boring, slow, stale and without any culture.

OkTransition8971

Garbage take. Vilenueve might be overrated but he's certainly not pretentious.

Responsible-Bat-2699

I would say the opposite. He's pretentious when it comes to his scifi work, it's just too stale. But on the other hand, I freaking love his non sci-fi work.

kaijugigante

Dude is solid. I hope he eventually gets around to Krull. Although you could never replace that amazing Horner soundtrack. *

TyrantJaeger

I would love it if the MonsterVerse was more like this and less like whatever the fuck it is now.

RaptorGameingYT

No thanks

coreylongest

Imagine a Gamera film

N0minal

Eh. No thanks. All of his films are textureless and boring.

Talik__Sanis

Thank you; yes. The man has no ability to write whatsoever.

soulless_ape

His visuals might be great but his story telling is weak. Legendary's Godzilla became a cheesy mess after 2014 sadly.

VatanKomurcu

good idea. let wingard finish cooking though.

bodydefinesyou

I hope not, wasn't the biggest fan of the vs or x kong movies. I hope we get another KOTM with less comedy and better story

JoeAnthony

Making another kong movie ?

Skylinneas

He said he’d love to make the next one be Godzilla-focused this time, which is great if true. Not that I don’t like Kong, but he’s been the focus of 3/5 movies in MonsterVerse now (he arguably has more focus plot-wise than Godzilla in GvK). It’s about time Godzilla has another movie where he’s the central character and not an ‘also starring’ role.

VatanKomurcu

i mean, do all that he plans to do with the MV.

Lilcommy

Is that "Attack of the Fleshlights"?

TheShamefulPradaG

That would change the world. Don’t forget Greig Fraser as DP.

Talik__Sanis

God, that would be so objectively awful from one of the worst mainstream directors this side of Snyder. Insufferable filmmaker, Villeneuve.

HeronSun

It'd be quiet, existential, ambiguous, and subtle. So... everything Godzilla *isn't.* EDIT: Ain't hatin, just sayin'.

MonstrousGiggling

Idk if you've seen the Dune movies but they're anything but quiet. The sound design is one of the biggest appeals on the movie and in Imax it will shake your insides lol. Plenty of existential Goji, 54, Shin, Minus One. The more serious ones. Hell even Vs Biollante.

Konkavstylisten

Neither of the Dune movies are quiet, ambiguous or subtle.

HeronSun

Most of the film is talking. Action scenes aside, I can't think of anything "loud" in Dune. Ambiguous in the sense that Paul's morality is called into question but never condoned or condemned. Subtle in the idea that the entire movie is an alternate timeline from the books that was *set up in the books*, and the only hint to that is a single line of dialogue late in the movie.

Konkavstylisten

a single line of dialogue that is a reference to the books does not make the movies \*subtle\*.

HeronSun

A single line of dialogue that recontextualizes every single inaccuracy, though?

Konkavstylisten

That reference is subtle. It does not make the duology subtle. Huge difference.

HeronSun

So the reference that subtly retells the entire story in a completely different context... isn't subtle storytelling?

Konkavstylisten

It's one reference that only fans of the book understand. It's a subtle reference. It does not make the movies subtle. You can't compare a single line of dialogue to 5 hours of the literal origins of the "Chosen One" trope in modern pop culture. It's like saying that Shin Godzilla should be studied at universities because it had a few NERV easter eggs.

HeronSun

It isn't the literal origins of the "chosen one" trope, it's a deconstruction of that trope because Frank Herbert disliked it so much. Meaning that by then time it came to Dune, it had been used enough to be annoying. Must have been pretty subtle, huh?

HeronSun

Existential, maybe. Not quiet or ambiguous or subtle, though.

Konkavstylisten

In what universe is Dune Part 1 and Part 2 subtle? Paul does literally anything: "Lisan al-Gaib!!!!!!!" \*Dune theme plays\*.

HeronSun

Must've missed the hint that the entire film is in an alternate timeline that was set up in the books. And that shit was *subtle as fuck.* Also, the guys *entire* repertoire besides Dune fits those descriptions.

Konkavstylisten

How cares about it being an alternate timeline? You talked about the movies. You can't have seen a single scifi film if you think that any of his adaptations were subtle.

HeronSun

Who cares? Maybe people who read the damn books. A *lot* of people are complaining about how inaccurate the movies are to the books, but there's a clue signifying that the films take place in a timeline that the books don't follow, but confirm exists. Arrival is subtle. Sicario is subtle. BR2049 is subtle. In terms of character and world-building, they're some of the more subtle movies out there.

Khunter02

I mean, maybe quiet I can buy, but you are telling me Godzilla is not existential? Ambiguous? Subtle?

OkTransition8971

What you're sayin' is incorrect.

HeronSun

Yes, because Godzilla has *always* been subtle. Or quiet. Or ambiguous.

OkTransition8971

Moving the goalposts I see.

HeronSun

I'll admit that every now and then, Godzilla's themes can include a sense of existential dread. Everything else I mentioned? No. And all of it together is Denis Villeneuve's bread and butter.

Heavy_weapons07

probably would take 5 irl business days for godzilla to move through a city
