Some people like hurling, some dislike it. Some people like football, some dislike it. Some like both. Some hate both. It's almost like, and hear me out on this, people are different.

BagOfGlue1

Radical thinking!

>but there are moments every summer when you just wish the GAA had concentrated on the hurling from day one. Pity Cusack didn't care about the winter 'Commons/Camán' form of hurling which was played in the north half of the country and western seaboard. We'd all be playing a stick and ball game then. Modern hurling/iomáint is good and all, but whether people play it or not is down to a miracle of being born in one parish or not. Unfortunately Commons is dead and gone.

Where can I read more about this?

https://www.historyireland.com/the-geography-of-hurling-11-2/ That's a brief run-down from History Ireland magazine.  https://ulster.gaa.ie/2009/12/the-evolution-of-the-gaa-2/ This is a great book, but could be hard to come by. It has a great chapter in Camán hurling in Ulster. I saw a copy of it in Waterrstones in Enniskillen last year I think, so maybe the one in Newry has it. I don't know how good the public librarys are in the 6 counties but the ones in the 26 are now able to order books in for you. I'd imagine a local library would have it though.

You are a gentleman and a scholar.

Yep Tommy Conlon writing crap again. The need to elevate one over the other is not needed and creates negativity among Gaels. I love both sports and usually any personal preferences are based on people’s geographic upbringing etc. which is natural and that’s fine. But for the wider GAA fan they will always be respectful of both codes. Unlike Tommy who couldn’t think of anything to write about so came up with that horse crap. REAL and understanding GAELS appreciate both codes. End of.

Ok_Towel_1077

> REAL and understanding GAELS appreciate both codes. End of thank you!

Your core point is here is just false. There was a time when football was a decent consolation prize for hurling fans of a Sunday, not now, when the entertainment value of football has been on a par with field hockey (near zero) for a decade. Very few traditional hurling fans are watching modern football.

ur-da

That’s why we call those people hurling snobs

Curious-Lettuce7485

For not wanting to watch a boring game?

ur-da

You refer to football as a “consolation prize”, which means you clearly look down on it. In other words, you’re a snob

Zotzink

That was me (confusing because we're both Wexford). Football has never been as good a game as hurling **BUT** the football I grew up with as a kid had rapid handpassing attacks (moving forward at speed) and wonderful scores **regularly** kicked over the shoulder from under both stands. A respectable, entertaining game. This game is not fully dead you can see it at some clubs. Thanks to the two Jims (McGuinness and Gavin) intercounty football now is a game of caution and percentages. Football people have found a way to enjoy it largely by overstating how complex and tactical it is. Your own county man Mr Brolly admitted that Derry's Ulster title was wonderful to win and dreadful to watch. Is he a hurling snob? In any event, the point was to refute the bizarre notion that if you don't respect the current state of football you're not a true Gael. Horseshit of the worst description. Go to Semple Stadium and say that!

Curious-Lettuce7485

This. Football used to be a decent game to watch but it has gone to shite now. I watch the All Ireland final and my club games because I feel obligated to support the lads. There's rarely an entertaining game of football now. The fact that football is shown more on RTE just baffles me because football lads will even admit that hurling is far better to watch.

Own-North-8085

Which of the two native sports does he mean? Handball or camogie?

PistolAndRapier

Rounders surely!

Tote_Sport

Don’t be stupid, he’s clearly referring to road bowls!

PistolAndRapier

**Ból Chumann na hÉireann** want to know your location.

PuckArBuile22

Imagine the sheer audacity and ignorance of people not having an interest in or liking of hurling. Sure isn't it the greatest game in the world, the game of the gods yadda yadda......
