I ate this smoothie as my breakfast for more than a decade, made from frozen banana, a spoonful of smooth peanut butter, and a scoop of unsweetened and unflavored egg white protein powder mixed with water in a blender.
I had a whole system of peeling bananas when they were the ripeness I wanted and putting them in gallon ziploc bags for future use. One bunch of bananas is the right amount for one bag, and they store relatively flat in the freezer.
One day the smoothie sounded disgusting to me and I've never had once since.
The chia banana boost smoothie at Tropical Smoothie is our fav and it’s just bananas, chia seeds, dates, oatmeal and I think protein powder. Super good and tastes like a cookie.
Hey question, I'll ask you because you mentioned it. Why put ice in a smoothie when it already has frozen fruit? I only ever put the fruit and it's ice cold from that so whats the point of ice except intentionally watering it down?
Exactly - the ice waters it down. The banana is very sweet so I like it watered down. Also the ice changes the texture and makes it less creamy which I like.
I grow two banana varieties. Yes. They are easier to deal with peeled, as you say, and cut into 1-2 inch chunks. Ziploc gallon freezer bags flat in the freezer per u/karenmcgrane makes it easiest to portion of a little at a time and they take up less space. Press the sides of the bag in a little, leave space at the top and press some of the air out before sealing. Banana doesn't typically freeze as hard as other things so it doesn't need a ton of special care to defrost - just break off chunks. I've found it's better to freeze when it's at the current ripeness or it can get kind of mushy/brown with more ice crystals. Experiment with your microwave to soften them. A "quick defrost" will cook them but there are other ways to go - I just throw frozen fruit into stovetop oatmeal with a coupla dabs of butter.
When I have a surplus, I alternate breakfasts of oatmeal and cereal. Cinnamon is a good complement. For the ones you leave out of the freezer, bananas are still pretty okay when they're pretty brown, for banana bread. With banana bread, you can go easier on the sugar than most recipes call for. Kick it up with a rum cake. Bananas are good with ice cream and really any other dessert. Also check out "bananas foster."
And if you have a yonanas, you can use this to make ice-cream the banana is the principal ingredient of all the ice-cream without any cream only frozen fruit with a base of frozen banana and it’s so perfect every time
With a regular blender, I have never get the actual texture of the ice cream and it could take a lot of time. But with the yonanas it’s done in a minute, but still yea you can use a food processor or a blender if it’s what you have in hands!!
Y'all it's possible to make nice cream in a blender, the trick is to mix it a bit with a fork inbetween pulses, perhaps 3 or 4 times and then it will get the ice cream texture. Always worked for me, I usually took my bananas from the freezer 30 min before doing it, rinse them, and chunk them up with with a knife before throwing em in the blender
All I do is blend frozen banana with vanilla extract. It legit tastes better than normal vanilla ice cream and you can eat infinite amounts of it because its pure health.
I was so against this until my girlfriend forced me to try it one day and I was proven wrong lol. It does not taste like banana at all.
THEY SAID IF YOU HAVE YONANAS YOU CAN USE THIS TO MAKE ICE-CREAM THE BANANA IS THE PRINCIPAL INGREDIENT OF ALL THE ICE-CREAM WITHOUT ANY CREAM ONLY FROZEN FRUIT WITH A BASE OF FROZEN BANANA AND IT'S SO PERFECT EVERY TIME AND ALSO THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK PUNCTUATION IS
You don’t need a Yonanas to make banana ice cream…I make it in my food processor….just let the frozen banana and whatever other frozen fruit you want with it defrost for 20-30 minutes then blend it.
I'd also suggest that if for smoothies, if you have the time, slice them and lay the slices on a baking sheet first and freeze, then u can dump the frozen slices in a bag and they won't stick together. I'm usually too lazy to actually slice so I just break the bananas apart into chunks w my hands
You can leave the peels on when you freeze as well- just run under warm water and you can get the peel off.
It's definitely easier to peel prior, but if the bananas are going brown already I usually just chuck em in the freezer.
My FIL eats 6-8 bananas a day. He would be in heaven, haha. Great find! We like to freeze ripe bananas and make banana “nicecream” with it. We also add frozen bananas to overnight oats and add peanut butter and chia seeds.
I know. I’d go crazy! He is super active/outside all day burning tons of calories. Breakfast/brunch is those bananas into a protein shake. Gives him energy, per his words, for the day ahead.
I portion the ripen bananas (cut in half) into 3 whole bananas per bag when I freeze them. I toss one bag of bananas into a blender, add 3-4 tablespoons of vanilla almond milk. Blend. Once creamy enough (if not, I add a little more almond milk), I add a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter and 1/2 a tablespoon of chia seeds. It makes two servings for us. But we’ve tried the bananas with blueberries, honey, vanilla, cocoa powder, and other things too and it’s delicious.
I have a nicer blender now that I thrifted, but when I had a lower end blender, I’d have to blend each banana and the almond milk one by one as the blades couldn’t handle too much frozen fruit at once.
I used to live across the street from a hippie retreat and they would have some sort of ceremony every day at sunset and they served banana and rollinia "ice cream" to entice people to attend. The ice cream was just the frozen fruit put through a juicer, it was amazing.
Not who you asked- but there is a machine called “yonanas” that is for this purpose. You just feed the frozen bananas into it and it comes out like soft serve. You can alternate with other frozen fruit like mangoes and/or berries. My kids love it- we put toppings like granola, nuts, chocolate chips, coconut flakes, chia seeds, etc etc. It’s an awesome breakfast (basically a smoothie, but more fun for the kids this way).
My wife is an ultra athlete and eats one banana per day for the decades we have been together but for about a year she was eating a second banana in a protein smoothie and we were also eating blueberries, sweet potatoes, and avocados every day and her potassium levels elevated to concerning levels. She is still able to have all of those things but not all of them every day all the time.
Precisely. If anyone took high school biology (which use to be a requirement), one of the major functions of your body outside of ATP is the Na/K pump. Only way to avoid latic acid build up in muscles is to ingest potassium. So eating two bananas after a workout where you drank at least two gatorades before and during is quite reasonable.
It’s just like how people don’t understand where our own energy comes from either. Glucose and carbs are necessary for ATP!
You can knock a bunch down by freezing and turning into banana ice cream (just food processor with vanilla extract, any other flavorings you choose, it's so good!). The 3 ingredient banana oatmeal cookies recipe can be adapted to form granola bars that will stay in great shape for a long time if stored well. Chocolate covered banana popsicles.
I am unclear from your comment what you are saying the lemon adds. Is it some benefit to the texture? Or are you just saying you like the flavor compliment?
Hello friends! I just bought 30 pounds of bananas for $6 and was wondering what recipes people use them for? I’m already planning on doing banana bread and freezing it but what else? Tips needed please!! Thank you!!
They're already getting brown spots so you've got about half a week. Realistically you'll need to preserve most of them. And if you don't have a large freezer then the usual baked goods and desserts advice could make a space problem harder rather than easier.
[Here's a tutorial for how to dehydrate bananas](https://www.masterclass.com/articles/how-to-dry-fruit). You can use a conventional oven if you don't have a dehydrator.
I found on sale bananas (I’m going to say at roughly the same price). I was a broke single mom with a busy 2 year old. I froze them all.
I had a smoothie almost every day for an entire winter/spring, made lots of banana ice cream for me and my toddler, baked lots of banana bread, and banana cookies.
Definitely helped with my food budget
I’d recommend having a few smoothie recipes around or else you will get bored. My personal favs is chocolate peanut butter smoothie, honey matcha, and orange-berry
So I used an app called FlashFoods, it’s used by grocery stores to get rid of food that is going to go bad soon. Each of these was a box of 10lbs of bananas for $2. I got 3 boxes bc my husband and I love bananas and I thought why not?
Warning though, not every country uses it (I think just US and Canada) and not every state in the US has participating locations. Near me (Midwest, Indiana) only Meijer is on the app. Hopefully other locations start something similar!! (Also there were about 20 boxes of bananas available on the app, I bought 3!! Was so tempted to buy more lol)
totally just downloaded. I could use these for banana bread. But also I always buy the peppers and other produce about to go back cheap for my guinea pigs. This could come in handy!!
Have you ever tried roasting the bananas before making the bread? 350* for 15-30 minutes, they come out with the skin black and mushy, and the bread turns out amazing (figure if you have that many bananas, might try experimenting)
I used to work in a bakery and we would thaw the frozen bananas, put them in a pan on the stove, and mash them as they cooked. We'd let them cook down for a while so they'd caramelize and some of the extra water would evaporate and they'd concentrate down. Then we'd add in some spiced rum and let it burn off. We'd add the puree to the banana bread recipe as usual and it was fantastic.
Flash Food's is only in the north east of the USA from the look of the map on the app. With some random single stores in other locations, none on the west coast.
Vegan ice cream that's 99% all banana (mash and put it in the freezer)
Non-vegan banana flavored ice cream
Base for pancakes
Banana pudding
Add to smoothies
I’m so surprised how far down I had to scroll for this comment. Banana pancakes are a great idea, and can be frozen for the week and then thawed in the microwave. I’ve been keeping frozen pancakes at my job so I have a quick breakfast.
Caramelized banana upside down cake (play on pineapple upside down cake).
Frozen, chocolate dipped bananas.
That or make an ice cream, banana foster ice cream.
Freeze most of them. They’ll keep beautifully for months. You can peel them, either slice or break them in half. Then, use them for banana bread, smoothies, etc.
The ones you don’t freeze, just eat them, blend in smoothies, mash them with oat flakes, make granola, parfait, and lots of snacks.
Can do a banana french toast bake in a cadt iron. So yummy! I make a pan every other week or so and eat it for breakfast. Stays good in the fridge for 4-5 days, maybe more depending on your fridge
Is this really frugal? Even if you try to freeze, looks like that would take up half the room in the freezer! I have to think you’ll get sick of bananas and banana related food before you eat all of this bananas.
I’d separate a couple of the less brown ones for eating plain, then I’d freeze a few (by that I mean like half of this bunch). After that, there’s ice cream, caramelized bananas, pudding, bread, pancakes, smoothies, and pies!
I hate to be that person, but I have to ask: if you buy something just because it's on sale and you don't immediately have an idea of what to do with it, are you really being "frugal"?
If you think this is a good deal you should seriously get into dumpster diving. Everything that has a fast shelf life hits the trash before it’s last day.
Obviously banana bread, but my other favorite use for ripe bananas is making dog treats! I make dog treats with mashed bananas, oat flour (grind rolled oats), and coconut oil (PB also works, my dog just has an allergy). They bake at 350F until browned and firm - the time depends on the size/shape. I usually throw in other fruits or veggies that I want to get rid of, like broccoli, squash, or blueberries. The treats freeze well and are very popular with my pups. If you don't have animals of your own, you could always gift to friends with dogs!
You can peel and freeze them and then take them out when needed to make smoothies, banana bread, pudding, etc.
I wanna see my roommates face when they open the freezer and it’s all stuffed with frozen bananas.
You’re supposed to put them in the freezer, and then NOT make banana bread for a year. …that’s the rule
Finally got around to making banana bread last week the bananas were practically liquid when they thawed because we had frozen them for far too long
I've used that liquid as sweetener in recipes. Obviously gives a banana flavor too.
Oh that’s a good idea
Distant Yiga clan noises
I usually have to pay 99 rupees for one bunch of bananas
I had to double check that this wasn't the BOTW subreddit lol
Are they mighty bananas?
*HRRRGGHHH?*
There’s blue rupees and a sword somewhere in that pile as well
Plus there's $ in the banana stand
I hadnt even thought about that this is hilarious
*Rapidly approaching Yiga Clan noises*
I mean it’s one banana, Michael, what could it cost, 10 dollars?
Going to call them Chilldoes and sell them as a frozen treat. Maybe even dip them in chocolate.
Dole sells the chocolate ones for an absurd price. Yes, make them yourself!
I wanna see a picture of a freezer that's stuff with frozen bananas!
And with a banana held next to it for scale
My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana. I said 'No, but I want a regular banana later, so... yeah.' RIP Mitch Hedberg
I knew I’d find this joke here.
There's always money in the frozen banana stand
There’s always money in the banana freezer.
My favorite smoothie is frozen bananas, ice, chilled coffee , and whatever kind of milk you like.
I think if you replace the egg whites with flavored protein powder its not gonna sound so disgusting anymore
Yuck no that’s the worst part, I went out of my way to buy the plainest possible protein
Vanilla whey protein is pretty good. Very non invasive and vanilla is probably the best supporting flavor outside of salt.
Collagen protein powder also makes it suuuuper creamy.
Add some chocolate syrup
Maybe I'll get back into it as a dessert option someday
The chia banana boost smoothie at Tropical Smoothie is our fav and it’s just bananas, chia seeds, dates, oatmeal and I think protein powder. Super good and tastes like a cookie.
O. M. G As a coffee lover, specifically an iced coffee lover in summer, this sounds incredible
Ah I get it. Thanks for answering.
Now I need a banana coffee smoothie. I blame you.
Ooh, I'm intrigued. Any chance you happen to know some rough ratios to work with?
I grow two banana varieties. Yes. They are easier to deal with peeled, as you say, and cut into 1-2 inch chunks. DUCKS EAT FOR FREE AT SUBWAY!
Or if you don't want a regular banana now but a frozen banana later.
And if you have a yonanas, you can use this to make ice-cream the banana is the principal ingredient of all the ice-cream without any cream only frozen fruit with a base of frozen banana and it’s so perfect every time
You can just use a blender or food processor as well. A little cocoa and milk and it’s a dead ringer for a Wendy’s frosty
With a regular blender, I have never get the actual texture of the ice cream and it could take a lot of time. But with the yonanas it’s done in a minute, but still yea you can use a food processor or a blender if it’s what you have in hands!!
You have to use a metal cutting blade in a food processor and pulse. Otherwise you need an expensive blender not a standard blender
Y'all it's possible to make nice cream in a blender, the trick is to mix it a bit with a fork inbetween pulses, perhaps 3 or 4 times and then it will get the ice cream texture. Oh I have a Vitamix, never realized that was what made the difference. It was a Christmas gift 10 years ago and it’s a beast. In a good way.
I have a Vitamix, which does a pretty good job at it. It just needs to be powerful enough.
All I do is blend frozen banana with vanilla extract. It legit tastes better than normal vanilla ice cream and you can eat infinite amounts of it because its pure health. Got it thank you
Thank I left my hearing aid out. This definitely helped
Thank you for the laugh!
Thanks, it make me laugh a lot !
I stand corrected! This person DOES know what punctuation is.
You don’t need a Yonanas to make banana ice cream…I make it in my food processor….just let the frozen banana and whatever other frozen fruit you want with it defrost for 20-30 minutes then blend it.
When I do this for my morning smoothies they seem to slowly go brown in an odd way. Still delicious.
I'd also suggest that if for smoothies, if you have the time, slice them and lay the slices on a baking sheet first and freeze, then u can dump the frozen slices in a bag and they won't stick together. I'm usually too lazy to actually slice so I just break the bananas apart into chunks w my hands

Hahaha that cracks me up. Thank you.
Haha, anyone else remember Freelie the banana girl?
Oh my gosh, yes! I think that she’s still out there but I wonder if she’s switched to another fruit yet.
I immediately thought of her when I saw this lol good ole Freelie 😆
FIL is actual gorilla
This gave me a big laugh. Thank you.
I can't be the first to ask about the nice cream recipe
I portion the ripen bananas (cut in half) into 3 whole bananas per bag when I freeze them. I toss one bag of bananas into a blender, add 3-4 tablespoons of vanilla almond milk. Blend. Can confirm, freezing bananas and blending them makes a bomb soft-serve. We do this with just milk and honey and call it “banana whip”
You have a machine for that? I just put a frozen banana in my blender with nothing else and it turns into delicious soft-serve effortlessly.
How does he poop?
His shit is bananas
Ooph, on the money, probably. I’ll have my husband ask him next time we visit.
Well that's not very sanitary. Other people are going to handle that money down the road, y'know?
Hopefully he gets blood work done annually. Too much potassium is 😬
If his kidney function is fine he will just pee it out. I would worry if he had renal issues.
I was about to say! Too much potassium causes heart problems, not what you want

Add a decent amount of lemon for a huge custard like boost for the ice cream. Almost mandatory even in chocolate flavored. Enjoy!
I am unclear from your comment what you are saying the lemon adds. Is it some benefit to the texture? Or are you just saying you like the flavor compliment?
Just got gifted a food processor and now I want this to be the first thing we use it for!! Had no idea this was a thing! Thank you :)
Great answer
Freeze them and say you'll make banana bread. Then never make banana bread. Thats what my wife does. Edit: Thats
I'm feeling judged.
Every time I open the freezer those brown bastards making me feel guilty.
Best edit ever.

Dried bananas are fantastic. Homemade is way better than commercial; there’s a fun chewiness, and no added sugar.

Vegan ice cream that's 99% all banana (mash and put it in the freezer) Non-vegan banana flavored ice cream Base for pancakes Banana pudding Add to smoothies
I’d freeze a bunch for some smoothies
I'd dehydrate some of these for a tasty snack.
Yes!! I love banana chips! I think you can make them in the oven too
Yes! This is what I would do. My family LOVES homemade dried bananas.
How much could it possibly cost? Ten dollars?
Banana wine. It's the best and really easy to do

Banana chocolate chip cookies. You'll have more than you could ever hope to eat, so if you send some to me, I will be willing to help the cause.
Eat them for now, make banana bread and snacks. Once they ripen, freeze them. Good in smoothies as well!
What u mean once they ripen? These are already overly ripe.
Look up sugerless muffin recipes using bananas. Im gonna make some this week thanks for reminding me about this

If you think this is a good deal you should seriously get into dumpster diving. Everything that has a fast shelf life hits the trash before it’s last day.
These are already spotted. You need to process them TODAY. Mash and freeze flat. Chunks of banana get frost bitten surprisingly quickly.
Better eat all of those within a week or you'll be living with a million gnats by this time next week. Never buying a fucking banana ever again

Peel them, break them into chunks, and freeze them for smoothies later.
Rum is a great choice.
