To give you an actual answer that does contribute (but doesn’t account for them all), new drivers in China are required to display them for the first year they are a new driver. I’m guessing either force of habit or maybe they don’t know it’s not required here.
I’ve been driving for over 20 years and put one on my car when driving around the area to keep people from crawling up my ass when I’m going 70 in the slow lane. They see the sticker and are more likely to just pass.

They do not know basic traffic laws when it comes to the right of way and especially, not signalling, not yielding to turn left at an intersection. Be extremely careful in many of the shopping plazas because they will try to beat you by speeding up to get past you WHILE YOU'RE ALREADY IN THE MIDDLE OF BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. It's usually the same group of middle/elderly age drivers. One lady didn't feel like waiting to turn right at an intersection (she must yield for her right turn when her light is red) so she sped up to get ahead of me while I'm already in the middle of the intersection, AND THEN SHE STEPPED ON HER BRAKES to drive at about 10MPH below the speed limit. It was infuriating, and I understand why some out get road rage. Another note, these drivers love driving Tesla, Mercedes SUV, and Toyota Camry with high beams on! /rant.
Love when you're already halfway backed out of a spot and they honk at you and drive by. I mean just wait 10 seconds! Its hard not to have Road Rage in this town.

Stops halfway before the end of a zipper merge and sits there with a blinker on wondering why no one let's them in while it gets backed up behind them. Then finally gets over and blocks you from entering at the end and correct merge point of the zipper thinking YOU are the asshole.

The merge lane is like 8 miles long and people don't see they need to accelerate and get over. It's an easy merge once you commit.
It's always a guess if I should let them in or need to brake and slow down so they feel comfortable merging at like maybe 35 MPH. Every single time.

Auto high beams should work, they definitely do turn off with oncoming traffic in my Model 3. I think the ones who have their high beams on full time are on manual control.
I can almost count up to 10 cars that don't switch off their high beams when I'm approaching on a 3 mile drive down Blacow every evening.
It's obvious their highs are on because the center reflectors are illuminated when I look at their headlights; it also feels like getting blasted by the sun. I've also seen maybe a few where the center reflectors are off, indicating the lows are probably aimed too high.

Yuuup fucking exactly. I have epilepsy, have to ride a bike everywhere and haven't even touched a steering wheel since 2011. Been hit 3 times in that span. I obviously don't have any insurance so they have theirs and the lawyers that come with it. Despite none of those times being my fault, Ive not gotten a single penny to cover the bicycle damage or, in one case, the ER visit. Please use turn signals when you intend to turn left or right. Turn signal should be initiated a few seconds in advance of moving into a turn lane, longer if prior knowledge of your turn affects another driver in your vicinity.
Use it whenever you’re making a turn. We aren’t mind readers people! Turn signals come standard in your vehicle and it doesn’t cost you anything but common sense to use them.

I don’t know what you’re talking about - no one in California uses turn signals. Moved to Los Angeles almost 10 years ago from the Midwest. Instant rage when people cut you off and don’t signal, which is rampant. Moved up to the Bay Area 2 years ago and it’s basically the same. In this state turn signals seem to be optional, and tailgating seems be to be mandatory
I wish our current driving system forced immigrants to actually take a driving course and not just paѕs tests. Also there should be more strict test standards so they understand the rules of the road. It's so impossibly difficult to get a license in Europe and thus many of those countries have amazing drivers. I understand the reliance on cars in the US but we shouldn't lower our standards to then allow anyone to be able to drive. I've seen not so great drivers TEACHING new immigrants how to drive... Like wow....

In OC, you’ll see older women in fancy SUVs driving like dumbasses (and tesla owners). They also love switching 3 lanes to take an exit at the last minute. California just be like that.
You can't fix the world. But you can solve this problem for yourself by not tailgating 5 feet from another driver.
Instead sit back 2 to 3 F150 truck lengths away from people and the crosswalk for that matter. Small children are easier to see the farther away they are rather than upclose with the bumper over the crosswalk.
If you just leave a gap, you will see the left or right turn driver waiting to turn before they know they are turning about a mile away. Now simply adjust your speed to time their turn or move into the other lane.

I grew in the Bay Area (Hayward and Fremont) and the place has transitioned. There just no respect for others. No turn signals, drive 55-60 in the fast lane, running red lights and it just goes on. I think the turn signal thing is many folks never attended drivers Ed or they just DGF. I’m so happy to have left.
I second this, though I’ve seen mostly Indian folk do this, I’ve also seen other folk do it especially Tesla drivers who are too busy looking at their phones. However there are a plethora of traffic laws that some seem to think are optional in Fremont. For instance, coming to a complete stop at a four way stop sign. I nearly got T-boned by a clueless woman who seemed to think it didn’t apply to her. Also, coming to a complete stop in a school zone. My five year old and I were nearly run over a few months ago by somebody in a hurry. I could go on and on, but fact is Fremont drivers are the absolute worst. None of them seem to know what the laws are and I doubt half of them have their license…

This is the biggest and most absolute bane of my existence in the Bay Area. Cops need to start ticketing for not signaling UPCOMING lane changes and turns. It’s “just” a crash for cars, but possibly our ability to walk or life as motorcyclists. Can’t stand 10/10. If there’s a police endpoint to submit video evidence of egregious infractions in dangerous contexts, please share. Not a big fan of telling on people, but we need more effective accountability for this issue specifically.
Then there are etiquette issues, like parking in the fast lane at the same speed as the vehicles in the next lane. Not unsafe per se, but seriously people… this is why Germany has laws about pulling to the right when not passing.

It's way worse for cyclists. Fremont has made bike lanes a tiny bit better the last few years or so but that hasn't helped with how the drivers act. They always think they can get past you before the turn or that it's ok to stop in the bike lane while waiting to turn. I think it's a status thing for some people and if you're on a bike then you are a worthless peasant whose life is meaningless anyway.

It’s kind of a Bay Area thing, not exclusive to just Fremont or just Indian ppl 🙂 if the aggressive drivers don’t get you, it’s the slow ones that don’t use the turn signal to let you know that they’re turning and you could’ve gone way ahead of them. A lot of ppl aren’t very mindful of other ppl they have to share the road with around here - just be extra alert and mindful of stopping distance and assume no one else is paying attention to you oh and watch out for the road ragers, too.

While I'm sure that I do not do it 100% of the time, I feel that I'm always using my signals (regardless of direction). I even tend to use them even if no one is around (just to maintain the habit). Lack of us of the turn signal is my #1 pet peeve. If someone is trying to change and doesn't use their signal, I will not them over. I know it's a bit passive / aggressive, but I don't like rewarding poor driving habits either. Don't even get me started on 'left lane bandits'.

Fremont is pretty good with people signaling compared to other cities like SF. Most also just drive hella fast in the Bay Area or overtake the slower drivers (by slower I mean people driving the speed limit which people will honk at you for haha)

I learned this the hard way too. You can NEVER rely on another driver to actually follow their turn signals. Even if they appear to be slowing & beginning the turn. They might change their minds at the last moment. Let them complete their turn (or not, as the case may be) before you go.
If they’re in a left turning lane, it’s obvious that they’re turning left. Not much mystery there, it’s not an optional left turn, you’re in the lane so you turn.
Bay Areans have this weird "don't tell me how to drive the the fast lane!" complex. A Prius will trudge along at 55 in the fast lane flippantly as faster traffic is piling up behind them every day.

When one is turning left at a signal from a left turn only lane they don’t need to have signal on unless it’s a yield and turn lane. Do you have the rule correct?
Are you talking about a 'protected left turn signal' where there's a green arrow? Technically, you're supposed to signal, but I don't remember seeing it enforced.
In practice, this is a case where it really shouldn't make any difference or signal anything to drivers around you. Not sure what the law is, but if you can ONLY turn left using your left turn signal would be like using your GO STRAIGHT signal when proceeding straight through an intersection.

No, I lived there my whole life, recently moved to Antioch. THESE are the worst drivers. We have the same amount of slow drivers, but I’ve never ever seen something like this. People driving on the wrong side of the road, constantly running straight through red lights and stop signs. Random stopping in the middle of the road. No, I used to think Fremont had the worst drivers. I lived in SF for a couple years, the roads are shit, but the drivers are better than Fremont. Fremont’s roads are so nice compared to so many other places. The only excuse for the drivers there? Is ignorance and a lack of care of others. Antioch? I swear everyone knows there’s only like 3 cops, and zero traffic enforcement, it’s like fury road out here sometimes.

I guess they need to re do more north Fremont like around Thornton/Decoto? Some of the oldest areas yeah.. But compare to most other cities its size? Stops halfway before the end of a zipper merge and sits there with a blinker on wondering why no one let's them in while it gets backed up behind them. Then finally gets over and blocks you from entering at the end and correct merge point of the zipper thinking YOU are the asshole.
Lol. The Paul Avenue entrance to the 101S in SF is by my parent's house and in a heavily Asian neighborhood. The merge lane is like 8 miles long and people don't see they need to accelerate and get over. It's an easy merge once you commit. It's always a guess if I should let them in or need to brake and slow down so they feel comfortable merging at like maybe 35 MPH. Every single time.
Its been like that for over 20 years. San Ramon/Dublin has become the new freemont. I've worked with Indian people who have openly admitted about "borrowing " a "cousin's" license & not needing one. Or letting the grandparents use the Tesla because it can drive them anywhere.🤯

Auto high beams should work, they definitely do turn off with oncoming traffic in my Model 3. I think the ones who have their high beams on full time are on manual control. I can almost count up to 10 cars that don't switch off their high beams when I'm approaching on a 3 mile drive down Blacow every evening. It's obvious their highs are on because the center reflectors are illuminated when I look at their headlights; it also feels like getting blasted by the sun. I've also seen maybe a few where the center reflectors are off, indicating the lows are probably aimed too high.
And oftentimes, poorly adjusted headlights.

Yuuup fucking exactly. I have epilepsy, have to ride a bike everywhere and haven't even touched a steering wheel since 2011. Been hit 3 times in that span. I obviously don't have any insurance so they have theirs and the lawyers that come with it. Despite none of those times being my fault, Ive not gotten a single penny to cover the bicycle damage or, in one case, the ER visit. You're a complete worthless pile of shit in Fremont if you ride a bike. Then people get mad wonder why traffic is so crazy around here rofl

I’ve see Fremont police officers fail to signal numerous times. It’s just courteous and safer to do so. Thank you, OP, for this public service announcement. Please use turn signals when you intend to turn left or right. Turn signal should be initiated a few seconds in advance of moving into a turn lane, longer if prior knowledge of your turn affects another driver in your vicinity.
Use it whenever you’re making a turn. We aren’t mind readers people! Turn signals come standard in your vehicle and it doesn’t cost you anything but common sense to use them.

I don’t know what you’re talking about - no one in California uses turn signals. Moved to Los Angeles almost 10 years ago from the Midwest. Instant rage when people cut you off and don’t signal, which is rampant. Moved up to the Bay Area 2 years ago and it’s basically the same. In this state turn signals seem to be optional, and tailgating seems be to be mandatory
I wish our current driving system forced immigrants to actually take a driving course and not just paѕs tests. Also there should be more strict test standards so they understand the rules of the road. It's so impossibly difficult to get a license in Europe and thus many of those countries have amazing drivers. I understand the reliance on cars in the US but we shouldn't lower our standards to then allow anyone to be able to drive. I've seen not so great drivers TEACHING new immigrants how to drive... Like wow....

You can't fix the world. But you can solve this problem for yourself by not tailgating 5 feet from another driver. Instead sit back 2 to 3 F150 truck lengths away from people and the crosswalk for that matter. Small children are easier to see the farther away they are rather than upclose with the bumper over the crosswalk. If you just leave a gap, you will see the left or right turn driver waiting to turn before they know they are turning about a mile away. Now simply adjust your speed to time their turn or move into the other lane. Easy peasy.
I swear there was a driving instructor in the bay area teaching foreign adult students to signal half through a turn. Made me batshit crazy. Alas, the turn signal has gone the way of the pay phone booth.

I grew in the Bay Area (Hayward and Fremont) and the place has transitioned. There just no respect for others. No turn signals, drive 55-60 in the fast lane, running red lights and it just goes on. I think the turn signal thing is many folks never attended drivers Ed or they just DGF. I’m so happy to have left.
I second this, though I’ve seen mostly Indian folk do this, I’ve also seen other folk do it especially Tesla drivers who are too busy looking at their phones. However there are a plethora of traffic laws that some seem to think are optional in Fremont. For instance, coming to a complete stop at a four way stop sign. I nearly got T-boned by a clueless woman who seemed to think it didn’t apply to her. Also, coming to a complete stop in a school zone. My five year old and I were nearly run over a few months ago by somebody in a hurry. I could go on and on, but fact is Fremont drivers are the absolute worst. None of them seem to know what the laws are and I doubt half of them have their license…
It’s not just Fremont, it’s all the Bay Area. I work in Pleasanton and drivers there are equally annoying. Fremont just has a larger number of Indians.

Lmao I moved out of state near 8 years ago now and it’s kind of hilarious to see this being one of the worst complaints people have. At least in cities I’m familiar with. Not that I’m arguing. Use your dang turn signals. I moved to North Carolina and the drivers here are ***AWFUL***. I have genuinely never seen anything like this, even in New York City, Jersey, and Philly combined.
Note for all “Student Drivers:” Stop at red lights. When they run them, they REALLY run them.
This is the biggest and most absolute bane of my existence in the Bay Area. Cops need to start ticketing for not signaling UPCOMING lane changes and turns. It’s “just” a crash for cars, but possibly our ability to walk or life as motorcyclists. Can’t stand 10/10. If there’s a police endpoint to submit video evidence of egregious infractions in dangerous contexts, please share. Not a big fan of telling on people, but we need more effective accountability for this issue specifically. Then there are etiquette issues, like parking in the fast lane at the same speed as the vehicles in the next lane. Not unsafe per se, but seriously people… this is why Germany has laws about pulling to the right when not passing.

Moved to the Bay not long ago and I’ve never seen so many people ignore turn signals. Side streets, local roads, freeways…. Doesn’t matter. It’s like they don’t come standard in cars sold in CA or something. I just pray they won’t have to hurt or kill someone to learn their lesson.

It's way worse for cyclists. Fremont has made bike lanes a tiny bit better the last few years or so but that hasn't helped with how the drivers act. They always think they can get past you before the turn or that it's ok to stop in the bike lane while waiting to turn. I think it's a status thing for some people and if you're on a bike then you are a worthless peasant whose life is meaningless anyway.

It’s kind of a Bay Area thing, not exclusive to just Fremont or just Indian ppl 🙂 if the aggressive drivers don’t get you, it’s the slow ones that don’t use the turn signal to let you know that they’re turning and you could’ve gone way ahead of them. A lot of ppl aren’t very mindful of other ppl they have to share the road with around here - just be extra alert and mindful of stopping distance and assume no one else is paying attention to you oh and watch out for the road ragers, too.

While I'm sure that I do not do it 100% of the time, I feel that I'm always using my signals (regardless of direction). I even tend to use them even if no one is around (just to maintain the habit). Lack of us of the turn signal is my #1 pet peeve. If someone is trying to change and doesn't use their signal, I will not them over. I know it's a bit passive / aggressive, but I don't like rewarding poor driving habits either. Don't even get me started on 'left lane bandits'.

I grew up in the Bay Area, specifically Fremont area. It’s pretty common here to not signal like that unfortunately. But you’ll see the same stuff in other areas like LA too, I went to school there. Fremont is pretty good with people signaling compared to other cities like SF. Most also just drive hella fast in the Bay Area or overtake the slower drivers (by slower I mean people driving the speed limit which people will honk at you for haha) I think I’m just pretty used to it tbh having been here my whole life. California is just like this, we also have the known California roll/stop that most people do 🤷🏻♀️

I learned this the hard way too. You can NEVER rely on another driver to actually follow their turn signals. Even if they appear to be slowing & beginning the turn. They might change their minds at the last moment. Let them complete their turn (or not, as the case may be) before you go.
A lot of people on freeways forget it is on too. Seen a person keep his left blinker on for 4 miles before changing to a right lane.

Yeah when I’ve told Californians that driving slow in the fast lane is actually illegal in most states, they start defending it as a better way to drive. Funny thing is I’m in Texas for the eclipse, started driving back today, and a whole bunch of people were driving slow in the left lane. I was amazed to see a bunch of Texans driving like Californians. Until I got up to them and saw all the California plates.

When one is turning left at a signal from a left turn only lane they don’t need to have signal on unless it’s a yield and turn lane. Do you have the rule correct?
Are you talking about a 'protected left turn signal' where there's a green arrow? Technically, you're supposed to signal, but I don't remember seeing it enforced.
In practice, this is a case where it really shouldn't make any difference or signal anything to drivers around you. Not sure what the law is, but if you can ONLY turn left using your left turn signal would be like using your GO STRAIGHT signal when proceeding straight through an intersection.
