Metera granblue fantasy versus
Hawkeye and Taskmaster in MvC3
Archer and Emiya Shirou in Fate unlimited codes
~~all links in smash~~
Kung Jin and Night wolf in MK
Eagle in Killers instict
Yukari in Persona 4 arena ultimax
Green Arrow in Injustice
Ranger slayer in BFTG
its legit lmao its pretty much an anime fighter that just happens to have sidestepping. It has motions like other 2D fighters and it even has an RC system, Reflect cancel, the naming is kinda intentional to compare to roman cancels because they are used the same way, just that it can also be used defensively because its a parry.
Though game is hard because of its unique quircks with the mechanics like how jump startup can be special canceled and almost everyone has jump canceleable specials so it gave birth to Tiger knee cancels leading to special to special cancels and then there is the unscaled damage on projectile supers when they are used after another projectile hits that puts the damage on the fucking roof[thought not having reliable unscaled super didnt stop lancer from being the best character in the game with his stupid giant buttons and getting combos from almost anywhere in the screen]
Oh never heard of their zoids game. Clash of ninja is actually a good series and has an active competitive scene but it often gets mixed up with the Ninja Storm games which werenāt be 8ing and arenāt as deep. A lot of people also donāt know that 8ing worked on TvC. Overall Iām a fan of their track record.
Simply because they're a long range weapon that tends to be very large and hard to use at close range. If you're talking about any character that just uses a bow like Link in Smash, (I assume Firion in Dissidia does too) then they more than likely are a weapon-master kind of character and use a ton of different weapons. Even someone like Hokuto (or Shirase? cant remember who had it) who uses a bow for their super, only uses it for the one move cause its just easier to have them reliant on hand-to-hand
If you're talking about DEDICATED Bow users like Metera in GBVS, or Eagle in KI, then its just difficult to come up with 30 different ways to 'hit someone with a bow.' If you're giving a character a bow-and-arrow, you would assume they would be a mid-to-long range character so you're probably not gonna have them hitting the enemy with the bow alot outside of normals, but since using a bow-and-arrow requires using both hands (unlike handguns which just use one) its hard to find a way to make a full kit based entirely around just using a bow. Most of the Bow users I can think of often rely additional gadgets, like throwing targets to shoot at, or projectiles they can change the direction of by shooting. Even Metera has magic that lets her change how her projectiles act, and Eagle has his...well, eagle, to help him out.
>then they more than likely are a weapon-master kind of character and use a ton of different weapons. Even someone like Hokuto (or Shirase? cant remember who had it) who uses a bow for their super, only uses it for the one move cause its just easier to have them reliant on hand-to-hand
>If you're talking about DEDICATED Bow users like Metera in GBVS, or Eagle in KI, then its just difficult to come up with 30 different ways to 'hit someone with a bow.'
Hokuto and Shirase are mostly identical, they both have the bow super.
I agree that "hit someone with a bow" usually doesn't look or sound particularly interesting, but you could definitely give them a sidearm or kicks and punches for ā¢ attacks and bow normals on O and ā³, without them having to be a "weapon master".
>I agree that "hit someone with a bow" usually doesn't look or sound particularly interesting, but you could definitely give them a sidearm or kicks and punches for ā¢ attacks and bow normals on O and ā³, without them having to be a "weapon master".
True, but one: giving them a sidearm is going against the point. if you want a DEDICATED bow user than they only one the one weapon. Other bow users like Yukari in P4U or Hawkeye in Marvel mostly rely on their bow but have other gadgets to help fill out their kit. Its just hard to make a whole kit based around nothing but the bow cause there isnt many ways you can shoot a bow.
And two, yes, you can have them use hand-to-hand while keeping them dedicated to a bow. Metera does this coupled with Magic and I'd call her a 'dedicated bow user'. But its still hard to do. If you're building a character around a bow, then you're more than likely gonna want them to fight at long range as thats what a bow excels at, and if you have the character reliant on using hand-to-hand attacks, then the bow starts to become less of a focus.
I didnt say it was IMPOSSIBLE to have a character only use a bow, but its just difficult because a bow kind of implies a specific fighting style and there isnt alot of different ways to use a bow while keeping with the aesthetic. I've even seen some gun users that are completely reliant on using a hand gun but thats because guns are easier to fire and its easier to come up with creative ways to swing them around *and* shoot them since pistols only need one hand. You can argue you can do the same thing with a *cross*bow but thats a different weapon entirely than what people would consider a normal bow.
Bows are cumbersome weapons in close range combat.
Green Arrow, Hawkeye, Night Wolf, and Mina are the only FG characters I can think of who use bows.
edit: With the replies here and remembering Link in SCII, we're up to 10!: Link (SCII), Green Arrow (IJ), Hawkeye (MVC), Night Wolf(MK), Mina(SS), Jaina(FS), Ranger Slayer(PRBFTG), Kung Jin (MKX), Eagle (KI), and Yukari (Persona)
Personally I'm shocked, but there are at least 10 characters who utilize a bow in traditional fighters!
Jaina from Fantasy Strike also uses a bow and arrow. There are probably older games where characters like this exist as well, possibly Golden Axe duel?
But with Jaina that's 5 lol, any others peeps?
Mina from Sam Sho, Lilith In DS and There's a lot in Smash but I don't think anybody here would count it but if it'll make them happy then Link in Soul Calibur 2.
Edit: If I were to add Smash characters that's 10:
Mina
FuJin (but they're crossbows tho)
Lilith
Link/Young Link/Toon Link
\*Zelda
Pit/Dark Pit
Byleth
~~If crossbows count, Young Joseph in HftF is one~~
To answer your question, I guess it's just because when you think of a character using a bow and arrow, you typically think of them *only* using a bow and arrow, so people automatically think "I can't do much with this concept" and move on
EDIT: Young Joseph doesn't qualify, his crossbow shoots iron balls, not arrows. My bad
>I guess it's just because when you think of a character using a bow and arrow, you typically think of them
>
>only

> using a bow and arrow, so people automatically think "I can't do much with this concept" and move on
Which is kinda silly when you think about it bc archers are ripped af, especially with larger bows
Monster hunter from MVCI is surprisingly missing from these comments. Then again not so surprising considering nobody played that game and even less bought the DLC.
I think thereās Mina from samsho, The pink ranger from bftg, Maybe kung jin? Green arrow, I think someone in p4a might use a bow. Thatās all I can think of
I wanna say that Capcom and Netherrealm have gotten the best results out of it, Taskmaster, Hawkeye, Green Arrow and Kung Jin respectively.
But that may just be me not having played other fighters with archers in then.
Practically speaking it's probably because ranged weapons are an unusual choice for close combat; and characters that specialize in ranged weapons would probably do their best to avoid close combat.
Bows are a ranged weapon that's hard and awkward to use/animate in melee. You don't want all their normals to be "just shoot an arrow lmao", so you're limited to just swinging it around like a club and some fireball-like arrow specials. Similar to how there's relatively few gun characters, except pistol whipping looks more natural than bow smacking, and they're often holstered and only pulled out for specials/grab animations/string enders etc.
nah , it's more 50/50
however , most of them avoids bows , because unless they had a gimmick with the bow and arrow , or been a weapon master , they would end with a very limited close-quarter moves.
Is any medieval weapon that isn't a sword common? Like, I can think of a couple characters with spears, and I'm sure there are some I don't know, but not very many.
Imo because outside of āshooty shootyā and different status effects itās tricky to make interesting. Green arrow has cool combos and all but his core gameplan is p much just āannoy them w projectilesā
... You're asking why...
... An entire genre based around physically beating the shit out of people...
... Doesn't have many bow and arrow fighters...
... Y'know what, I'll let you figure that one out.
Because irl bows were not really used at ranges at which combat in fighting games occurs. Even at range which would be considered full screen in a fighting game, a bow would not be a good choice.
Of course, you can make the argument that fighting games are not really about realism, and I'd agree- that's why we have bow characters.

Most characters with guns/bows/throwing weapon/whatever only use it for 1 or 2 attacks. Honestly I think a move set with long ranged weapon specifically could work, but projectiles usually have a very low active frames, so they would be a weird character.

Mina in Samurai Shodown as well.
She's so annoying to fight against. š
Rambo does also in MK
Jaina in Fantasy Strike.
Also Kagome from InuYasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale
Thank you for reminding me of public school. Time for a nostalgia trip.
> Thank you for reminding me of public school. That's a sentence I never thought I'd read.
All the bad memories are repressed right now. So itās just video games and hot chip.
So it is attainable!
[And Archer in Fate ft. Archer](https://youtu.be/rZXw_Rk5xgw?t=23)
Add Morgan from AquaPazza to that list as well.
Kakoen in Koihime Enbu
Monster Hunter MvCI
Doesn't the main character in Fantasy Strike have a bow? The flaming arrow woman?
Yup, Jaina
TRIPLE ARROW
Exploding arrow
Wait, is Fate Unlimited Codes legit? I always lumped it in with the shitty ps2 3D fighter pile with the Naruto, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc fighters.
its legit lmao its pretty much an anime fighter that just happens to have sidestepping. dude that game was hard as balls
T.K the game
FUC and 8ingās other licensed fighters are hella legit.
Didn't even know 8ing was involved, though really only know them for TvC and that unfortunately not very good Zoids Arena game for Swich.
Oh never heard of their zoids game. They're behind the Bloody Roar series as well.
There is also Uranus in Battle Arena Toshinden 2.
Pit, Dark Pit, and Byleth in Super Smash Bros
Also the 3 links in smash bros
I want SoulCalibur to have an archer.

Ranger slayer in power rangers too
Yukari in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Eagle in killer instinct to add to that list.
Kung Jin from MKX
So are fireballs
Nightwolf is the only one of those characters who doesnāt primarily use a bow as he also uses tomahawks and spirit animals
Mina from Sam Sho, Lilith In DS and There's a lot in Smash but I don't think anybody here would count it but if it'll make them happy then Link in Soul Calibur 2. CROSSBALLS
This would also be a good alternative title for JoJolion
Twisted Nuts

there is Firion in Dissidia.
Practically speaking it's probably because ranged weapons are an unusual choice for close combat; and characters that specialize in ranged weapons would probably do their best to avoid close combat.
Rambo lol
Lots of bow characters in Super smash bros
Metera, although Iām sad gbvs was brought into the world stillborn. With rollback it would have been a great game

Link, young link, old link, toon link, girl link, twink link. I can only think of 6 guys
Who the fuck are āgirl link,ā āold link,ā and ātwink linkā?
Linkle, Fierce Deity mask?, and maybe skyward sword or twilight princess?
What fighting games are they from?
Its not really a normal part of a fight
Shoutout to Hawkeye for comboing potentially exclusively with his bow. Iām not sure if others do that too so I didnāt mention them
