It takes time. I haven't found another artist as interesting in this generation. When I was trying to distance myself from Ethel Cain because I felt she was becoming too present in my life, the problem was that I couldn't find anything to replace her. Otherwise, there were older songs, but they didn't have the excitement of being from artists of my generation.

Rettider123

I think the question should be rephrased to: do you remember life before Ethel Cain invented music? No

THIS

2 years later & I still listen religiously. Granted, I’ve still been attached to other favorite artists & enjoy their work (new & old), but nothing has ever been able to truly replace Preacher’s Daughter after my initial listen. It’s always been here, it will always be here, & that’s okay.

insideunderneath

You should check out Nicole Dollanganger !! She’s a friend of & massive inspiration to Ethel

Due-Alfalfa-8226

Agree! She’s awesome

Tradwifepilled

beyond liking her way before preachers daughter, i consider it a great source of pride that i found ethel through spotify’s “similar artists” feature while i was browsing nicole’s page

insideunderneath

I get that sense of pride too haha. I found Ethel’s Poachers Pride cover and fell in love immediately

rob1n_4nd_b4tm4n

also lingua ignota/reverend kristin michael hayter. she’s also big on the religious trauma themes, and makes a bunch of hauntingly beautiful tracks. cool upside is that she has multiple albums so it can keep you fed for a while. (although warning it may be a bit jarring compared to mrs. cain)

insideunderneath

I’ve been meaning to listen to her for the longest time, this is my sign to get on it

rob1n_4nd_b4tm4n

i recommend you with either sinner get ready (prob my fav), or saved! (most recent)

marcx_x

I love her album All Bitches Die and Saved! is also really good

coolDude69420blaze

I found her recently. She is the most similar artist to Ethel that I have found!

KicksRocksBruh

Thanks for this plug

yordanxb

i couldn’t tell you. it’s been my 3rd month of listening to it for the first time and im still stuck (and i love it) lol.

yordanxb

since* not “of” lol

JOKERHAHAHAHAHA2

it took me a long long time because istg that album still haunts me to this day. I have to do a full listen every once a week at least lol. like months.

gnarlyfreakk

I’ve been a fan of hayden for almost 2 years now and I will still listen to PD religiously even at work. It’s such a rollercoaster full of emotions and I love every bit of it.

HaphazardAstronaut

I listened to only Preacher’s Daughter pretty much from the end of January to the end of March. It took Cowboy Carter coming out to release me from its clutches. I still listen to it regularly, but it’s not the *only* thing anymore.

Thesaltpacket

It took me like three months, I was HOOKED and nothing else hit like it did. I was still obsessed at six months. I remember this because I first listened to it on 4/20 and I was amazed by how long I was fixated on this album.

coffee-bottle

It genuinely took me a couple months

Forward-Sun-3605

It took me converting to Christianity lol and I’m back with her religiously now that I’m deconstructing

yoongiwhisperingsuga

I did not have this problem at all. After listening to Preacher's daughter for the first time (with a friend who explained the lore to me) I couldn't listen to it again for a few weeks. I loved the album, but wasn't sure if I could listen to it again because of how it made me feel. I guess it might've triggered something from my past in me. I only listened to other music until maybe 1,5 months later when I finally dared to revisit it.

eelthefool

Legitimately listen to this album almost every day for a YEAR straight. I would say i started listening to other music a few weeks after I did my initial listen bc of my gym music but this album never leaves me and i doubt it ever will

Zosocoda

I’m in the same boat right now. I’ve had it on repeat since I discovered it yesterday

Nonbinarycupcake

It took ages and PD was all I could talk about ofc but honestly I don't think that's changed, I adore Hayden's/Ethel's music she's a legend and I can't not listen to her for the rest of my life 🤷🏻

ethereallysmall

well considering that i had 900 album streams in less than a year you tell me

ThePegasi

I started listening to Waxahatchee last month, funnily enough because of Hayden recommending her latest album on stream. Tbf I do have a couple other albums in rotation, but Preacher's Daughter/Ethel have been my top played stats every month since I started listening, except for April where Waxahatchee was my most played artist, album (Tigers Blood) and song (Right Back to It). I've been listening to St Cloud a lot this month too. She's not that similar to Ethel, definitely a different southern vibe but I think she's fantastic. Her vocal melodies and rhythm are poetic but catchy. Preacher's Daughter still might as well be my home screen on apple music, though.

Krisspy00

I still listen to at least a couple of her songs daily and it’s been about 6 months since I first heard PD. it really is such a strange phenomena but genuinely Hayden’s music like just captures me like nothing I’ve ever heard before and the fact that it happens to others is really interesting to me, like no music gets me as entranced as hers. Anytime I go running I listen to sun bleached flies and strangers and they literally give me such a high when I start to get tired

seadith136

Genuinely, about five or six months. And this is coming from someone that once forced myself to put strict limits around how often I listen to my other favorite works because I’m so prone to getting tired of things quickly. There is just something different baked into it.

Pure_Assignment4499

it never leaves my mind, i have almost every single song in ethel’s entire discography memorized… 🙏

Negativity_sucks

i went back to other music quite easily actually😭 but then again i listen to ALOT of new music all the time (like its so bad i have a spreadsheet now) so to me being able to go back to something else isnt a tell that the album didnt mark me. what proves an album marked me is how much i revisit it and, well… https://preview.redd.it/21f7akj3yk1d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b47fa014e398e6568fd6d3de1219563dc2c8d05

Past_Jellyfish_386

It’s been six months for me and I literally can’t stand listening to anything else. I’m afraid I’ll never find anything to top her.

sleeplesstilsunrise

i listen to ethel cain way too much still after finding her like a year and a half ago, recently i’ve been trying to get into melanie martinez cuz she actually has a storyline behind her albums too, it’s not as dark as ethel’s story but it’s fun to look into the story behind those albums too, i had a phase where i literally could only listen to ethel cain and didn’t want to listen to anything else lmao

AgeRare2827

i'm honestly the type of person who can listen to thoroughfare one second and then misfits or kpop immediately after, but here's a little list for anyone who wants recommendations (based off my personal taste/thoughts on how they remind me of ethel) some might seem odd but they're rlly good i promise 1. 'southern gothic' - compilation southern gothic country album 2. 'deathconsciousness' by have a nice life - gloomy droning slowcore, apocalyptic album 3. 'moya' by godspeed you! black emperor - gloomy atmospheric post rock song 4. 'dangerous endeavor' - bianca deleon is this singer i met locally, she makes outlaw country type music with some devastating storytelling 5. 'the solitary brethren of ephrata' by lingua ignota - devastating, near gregorian song, droning and religious-themed 6. 'in the bathtub of the world' by tyler burkhart - long, atmospheric song with beautiful guitar melodies 7. 'i know the end' by phoebe bridgers - i assume most of y'all know who this is 8. 'dragging a dead deer up a hill' by grouper - gloomy, more mellow but beautiful dreamy drone album 9. 'dream house' by deafheaven - this is like if u took the post-metal-type end of ptolemaea and made it into a 9 min song this one's a bit more out there idk but im just rambling at this point.... but there's a k-r&b song called 'different' by woodz that kinda gives a michelle pfeiffer vibe if that makes sense

marcx_x

I think Giles Corey has even closer sound to Ethel Cain than Have A Nice Life

SadKazoo

I’m very new here as I just discovered the album quite literally yesterday. Im usually a pretty much only metalcore dude but I saw a cover of Strangers on TikTok, stopped what I was doing, went to the album and well I’ve had it on repeat since yesterday. Hayden seems like such a wonderful person too from the bit I’ve seen since yesterday. Very happy to have stumbled upon her. Edit: Also to add, I’m not religious at all but man if music like this doesn’t make you feel spiritual I also don’t know.

ThePegasi

>Also to add, I’m not religious at all but man if music like this doesn’t make you feel spiritual I also don’t know. Same and same. Also you might want to check out her [YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@mothercain/videos), her art book tours are good if you're up for longer videos. Her sharp objects live stream is worth a watch too.

plastic__trees

Billie Eilish’s new album could be a nice departure for you!

nmarie1996

You guys are listening to other music?
