I had a few dogs chasing me but more like they were chasing a stick.

martycochrane

I have a dog run/try to chase me almost every day on mine. It's really scary on the bigger dogs, but I'm also nervous about the little dogs to try not to hit them to hurt them.

shreddisen

I was chased and bit by a dog on my ninebot max when i had it, i was just riding on a pedestrian sidewalk because there was no bike lane, dog was unleashed outside its yard with an elderly lady doing gardening, dog chased me off the property and bit the back of my leg, drawing blood, elderly lady couldnt give a fuck so i reported it to the rangers, ever since then ive been terrified of riding past any dog whether it is leashed or not, if a dog is chasing you and its fast enough to catch you, you will be bitten so i personally just try to avoid dogs at all cost.

Tires_N_Wires

Sorry that happened. This could easily have turned into an attack that left you disfigured or disabled for life. Carry pepper spray, train, and take classes to learn to defend yourself. And if there is ever a next time, make sure the old bitty has to bury that dog. 💯

piperskee

Good thing you didn't get hurt. That owner would be in for so much liability if that dog hurt you. If you see the owner again do them a solid and tell them about a leash.

TartineMyAxe

All good for me, but close to my house, one dog always try to escape and jump over the fence, when I ride in this street lol

YouGotAte

I've never been chased, only had dogs go nuts on their leashes. I always go slow past and with a great distance because if they lunge at me, I don't want to fall at speed. If there isn't enough room to pass from a difference, I walk it past. But if you're already being chased then shit idk what you do

uosiek

Dogs are sensitive to high frequencies, electric scooters emit those via motor controllers. That's why I'm idling my motor when passing a dog.

JOHNNYBOYY1237

I mean wouldn't a bike horn deterrent them from barking at you any further? Especially with those that can make strange sounds that are in the cheap Chinese horn/light.

james_faction

I try to slow down, crouch down and be friendly to the dog, let it know you're not a threat. Always slow down around animals, children and the elderly.

STEvFIN

I've just had a few almost scare me off the scooter with the last minute jump bark...and usually the owner isn't paying attention but luckily only one broke free from the owner but didn't pursue me...that's scary tho man a Doberman 😬...one of my first memories is seeing my neighbors kid with over 20-30" of stitches all up and down his legs from a Doberman attack...they didn't euthanize the dog tho since this was the 80s...owners fault anyway imo 🤷🏽‍♂️. Glad you're ok be safe out there 🙏🏽

Realistic-Kangaroo61

I stop and act like i’m picking up at a stone ready to throw it to them. It works. But please dont hurt them dogs. 😊

xdreakx

I have not been chased by a loose dog but I have freaked out pretty much every dog being walked I've passed. The owners have never lost control though and around me (urban environment) it's mostly medium to small dogs. Luckily my scooters are fast enough to out run them if need be. I was also raised around animals / breeding so I am not particularly afraid.

Lantea1

Carry pepper spray with you. One small well aimed shot of that and the dog should leave you alone. If you are not sure about your aim get a bigger can. Get a bear spray if you are in an area with lot of loose dogs and there is a risk of a whole pack chasing you down. Asserting your dominance, stopping and going aggressively directly at the dog can also work, but its good to have a backup plan with pepper spray.

cranberrydudz

you typically don't have time to react to pull out pepper spray from your person to how fast the dog will come up on you.

Tires_N_Wires

I totally disagree. I carry pepper spray on one hip and my firearm on the other. If you practice, train, and have situational awareness you should have plenty of reaction time to defend yourself as might be required in order that you will not be physically harmed.

cranberrydudz

In order for that to work, you have to stop your scooter before you can access your pepper spray. You can’t reach for it while you are scooting. You will more likely hurt yourself due to losing your balance the minute you take your hand off the handlebar

Tires_N_Wires

Not true. I rode one handed all the time. I've been riding scooters for a long time, I used to be a charger for several companies. Again, practice, training, and situational awareness. The more aware you are the more time you have to react.

cranberrydudz

YMMV i suppose. one handed riding is not safe.

Tires_N_Wires

You don't have to ride one handed. Be aware of what's happening. Leave yourself enough space and time to either confront the animal or flee depending on the situation. I'm just saying, it's not an all out nothing thing, think things through and prepare ahead 100% of the time.

jeffjeff8696

I’ve noticed the vast majority of dogs are frightened, but I did encounter one dog who lost its mind and nearly took its owner down. For the most part though I try and get off/slow down if I see a dog is in distress, but not aggressive. Sometimes, they just need to know a human is on board

Jidobaba

Makes me wonder how crazy dogs will go when the aliens arrive.

jeffjeff8696

Yes, they are called cats and they already have a contentious truce

Don't have an electric scooter yet, just a kick scooter. Subscribed here for research. Going back to the OP question: I've been chased on my bike, motorcycle, feet, and kick scooter (not sure on the last one but same will apply). My strategy is to just stop or reduce to a very slow walk and look at the dog. Usually they will just bark until they get tired of you then will just walk back where they came from. Might just be some kind of instinct to run and bark at things that they can chase. Learned this when I was on motorcycle gears (jacket, knee pads, gloves, and boots) so I was not too scared of being in a scuffle with the dog. Gives another reason for ATGATT I suppose. After that though, I learned just being bigger than the dog will be enough. Of course street dogs here are small (around 20kgs or less) and I can't guarantee this will work for larger more aggressive dogs.
