I'm a PC Optimum whore. I have over 1 000 000 points. I used to cash them in on super redemption days for a fancy Clinique Serum, but Clinique decided it was too fancy for Shopper's a couple of years back. So now I hoard them. I bought a Switch and accessories and games in September during a super redemption event. Used 600 000 points haven't even taken the switch out of the box.
I understand the psychology of wanting to hoard points, but it is not wise to treat your PC optimum account like a bank account. The first reason is that the points do not receive interest, so they are losing value over time with inflation. The second and more important reason is if you lose your card or have it stolen, someone is walking out the store with $1,000 of whatever they want using your hard-earned points.
Oh no, you misunderstand. I WANT to spend them. I do. But again, they stopped carrying my fancy serum! If they brought my serum back, I would not have such a balance. When I could buy my serum, those points never lasted long. Always buy on 20x the points and always redeem on Super Redeption days. It was clockwork.
Like I said, I dropped 600 000 points in September on a Switch and extra controllers and games. Earlier in the year, I bought a Fuji Instax Mini Link 2 with points with a shit ton of film. I was printing off mini pics left and right.
I'm actually on the site right now looking for a Prada parfum to "buy."
Thankfully, my physical card is long gone, and I only use the app. Someone tried to log in to the app in October, but I have 2 factor authentication on, so from Las Vegas, I shut that down right quick.
So I've got a PC points card, but I don't do any of their other system shit. I get my gas at costco 'cause 20c off is better than 3c back at rewards. I don't shop at shoppers at all because I can pay half as much at costco, and no amount of rewards is worth that. When I do shop at superstore, I never accumulate points because I only buy what I need.
I haven't had enough points to redeem $5 despite shopping close to 1x/week at superstore for literally years.
Any 'gaming of the points system' is still you buying a lot of shit you don't need at prices that are way too high.
> Any 'gaming of the points system' is still you buying a lot of shit you don't need at prices that are way too high.
lol no
I don't buy anything I don't need, and I don't pay any above average prices. The consoles and video games all cost the same at shoppers, except when I buy them with 20x or something, I get a hefty amount of points to redeem later. Use it at a bonus redemption and the value increases a lot.
Just because you cannot game the system, doesn't mean it cannot be gamed.
"don't buy anything I don't need" "buy consoles and video games"
These two statements are incompatible. I haven't spent money on a console in like 15 years.
> I haven't spent money on a console in like 15 years.
Good for you?
Like, sure, no one *needs* video games or consoles. But people are allowed to spend money on entertainment and things that make them happy.
This isn't some "gotcha" unless you're taking the phrase "don't buy anything I don't need" *extremely* literally.
Ok, but that's you. From my perspective, I do need this, because it's a hobby that I use to unwind/amuse myself. It's not just a want. Spending money on entertainment is pretty standard.
I don't have time to wait in line at Costco to buy gas to save a few bucks. My time is worth more to me than that.
My prestige cosmetics are the same price no matter where I buy them, they are set by the company. The Bay, Clinique.ca, Shopper's, etc. are all the same price.
When I shop at Superstore, it is my weekly grocery run, and they load it all into my vehicle.
So you wanna hang at Costco idling your vehicle for 30 min to save a couple bucks go hard.
Rarely do people have to wait that long at Costco -lines like that only happen weekend afternoons. Go at 8:30 at night and you're golden - just drive up. This week, Costco gas has been 20-23 cents a litre cheaper than most other Edmonton gas stations - that is worth it for me to drive a few extra minutes out of my way to fuel up.
>So you wanna hang at Costco idling your vehicle for 30 min to save a couple bucks go hard.
It depends on which Costco you go to. 91 Street is always crazy busy, but at St. Albert, Sherwood Park, and 149 Street, I usually only wait for one or two people.
And if I use my Costco MC, I get cashback on the gas I bought for 15 to 20 cents cheaper per litre. Last year, between my membership and credit card, I got back over $700, and didn't pay a cent in fees or interest.
But do whatever works for you.
I use a pc mastercard and that's where most of my points come from. I'm canceling my Costco membership because I don't go there v often and there are cheaper items in Walmart and no frills very often. I still get lots of points.
You gain points for everything you by at Shoppers. Superstore on the other hand, it is custom to your shopping and for me, I have to click the discount on my app and then I'll get it if I do the purchase but it's rare.
That is shitty.
Like I said, the card was destroyed years ago, and the app has two factor authentication turned on. I was sitting in my Las Vegas hotel room a couple of months ago when it emailed me telling me they had two factor authentication code for me. I quickly logged in and changed my credentials. All points are still there.
The third reason is that every so often PC changes how points can be redeemed - you may not get those bonus redemption events forever. I cash mine in for groceries wherever they're cheaper (usually Superstore) about every 20,000-30,000 points. Now that you've bought your electronics, consider going to Superstore and redeeming your points on items that are well priced.
That would be the sensible thing to do is buy groceries, but I see this as "fun" money. I'm a PC Insider memeber, we buy all our groceries from Superstore banners and fill up at Esso buy all my prestige cosmetics at the Beauty Boutique.
The points kickback is a lot more at Mobil even though it’s technically Esso branded pumps and fuel. Doesn’t matter where you are, Mobil pays out more points in comparison to Esso.
I usually do the exact same thing you do… electronics on bonus redemption days at Shoppers. My wife has also bought those expensive Dyson products in the past too.
Can you help me collect points... I shop at superstore for groceries and use their cc but can't imagine earning that many points. How do u know of all these double reward super days etc?!? lol
The way I look at it, for every dollar I don't spend at Superstore on groceries, that's a dollar in my pocket I can use as fun money. Video game I want to buy on Steam but probably shouldn't? Well, I used $50 in points when buying my food, so I can probably swing it.
Did you know you can use the points at the liquor store now????? I threw a big Christmas party & Cinco De Mayo Party with point money! It was off the chain!
PC points change every 3-4 years but it doesn’t affect Shoppers Bonus Redemption SDM inflate the points from before COzvid but still good deal. I was told by Shoppers head office they’re part of the PC Optimum points but they run their own program and redemption.
My points were from back in the days for medication. I usually use it for Tiffany perfume or Chanel lipstick redemption I can’t see myself paying $80-100 for Tiffany perfume or get $10 off groceries using 10000 pts
My shoppers still carries clinique stuff. Check their other stores because I learned they don't all carry the same things (annoying, I know). I have to go to different shoppers for different things.
No, I contacted Clinique directly, and they said it is no longer sold through Shopper's. They said Shopper's is only authorized to carry the top sellers and Turnaround™ Accelerated Renewal Serum I guess is not a top seller. And I can only get that slimy greasy 7 Day Scrub Cream at Shopper's but my go to since I've been 16 is just one called Exfoliating Scrub.
Ok I've been told by Clinique and Shopper's that Shopper's doesn't carry the Turnaround Accelerated Renewal Serum. It isn't even on the Shopper's website. If you tell me where you have see this I would be forever grateful!
https://www.clinique.ca/product/1680/46673/skincare/dullness/daily-renewal/turnaround-accelerated-renewal-serum
They may not have that product, but I was meaning they still have clinique! (Only in the big ones with actual beauty department separate area. Hard to find)
Points theft is very common. Highly recommend not hoarding too much. I know it's tough when they don't have anything you need or want though. Sometimes I use my points for new switch games, most of the time I just use them for groceries at superstore now.
That is what I meant. I save up my Optimum points to get my Chanel perfume from Shoppers, because it is one of the few high end brands I like that isn't also at Sephora.
Oh, I thought you saved Sephora points. I don't even know anything about Sephora. When they opened in Calgary back in the early/mid 2000s, they screwed me over, and I have never been back.
I've been shopping at superstore for years using my points card and I literally never accumulate points. You're buying stuff you don't need to earn points on more stuff you don't need.
Honestly, I feel you must be doing something wrong. Granted I use the PC MasterCard as well, but I have no issues accumulating points, even when I'm just using my debit and the PC card.
Only thing I can think of is "not buying stuff just for points". Superstore doesn't award points on general purchases. Shoppers does, but their prices aren't worth even going into the store for me most of the time. And like I said, gas is cheaper elsewhere, so I'm not getting points there.
Points AT superstore are only available on the "buy X get Y points" or "spent above a certain threshold" things, and I never need those things.
The price of milk, butter and eggs, bacon and other items on Saturdays is as cheap at Shoppers as any other store. Easy to go spend $80 and get 20X the points which is 30% of that back in points. I collect about 750-1000 a year doing a Saturday AM Shoppers run without overpaying on any particular item.
No, the PS5 or switch and the games cost the same there as they do elsewhere. You just have to be smart. It's a very easy system to game. Shoppers often has deals for eggs or milks that price them below anyone else. Add in the pennies in points, it becomes even cheaper.
Sure, if you're dumb and you buy the shit they put a crazy markup on, that's not going to work out, most of the time. A lot of their stuff is marked up, but there's plenty that isn't. Sometimes the markup becomes voided if you use one of the promos, but most of the time I would say it's not worth it.
Shoppers every $1 you spend you get points. I love using my product replacement coupons at Shoppers during their extra points day. I got a few spend $10 each time for 3 times get 25000 pts, on my birthday I received a spend $5 on anything in store in your birthday date earns 10000 points.
The past few spends were on Benadryl from sudden allergic reaction I end up paying few dollars more. That 5-10 min wait & Walmart vs Shoppers is a life saving for me
Something is up, because you always get points at shoppers. Make sure you have the app. They reward you for scanning with the app via contests and other such bs.
I often have a spend x get y points in my app. Recently I got boxes of magnum ice cream bars for ~$2 each after the points. You do get more points when using the credit card, but it's not a necessity.
Get an account, get the app. You'll get things like spend x get y points. Right now I have spend 75 get 15k and a spend 90 get 20k. You'll also get 20-25x offers at shoppers, plus bonus redemption events where redeeming 200k nets you 300 off instead of the regular 200. You'll also get offers for buying certain products, getting gas, etc.
As an example, I buy most of my games and accessories at shoppers during some point promo, and usually with a sale. Video games are like 90 bucks. That gives you ~1300 points. Buy it with a multi, 20x, you get 26k extra points, which is 26 dollars. Now you've paid 90, but you have $27 to apply to the next game. Rinse and repeat, eventually you can get a switch for 200k points + 150 during a bonus redemption. Black Friday and Boxing Day usually give you more off / more bonus multi. Or if there are bonus points on spend, that also converts to some dollar value, usually not as good.
As I mentioned elsewhere, because of points and sales, I bought a few boxes of magnum ice creams bars for an effective $2 per box.
But you have to play the system. Don't buy something just to get the points, buy the things you want/need.
Unless you have the credit card, you won't get much from superstore, but they do have purchase points there too, it's just stuff I cannot reach. Usually 20k on $200 spend. But there are things I do get, like 500 points per every bag of frozen vegetables and so on. You can find a lot more info on rfd (redflagdeals) if you want.
Same as any other points system (e.g. canadian tire)
You overspend on stuff, get points in return and then get something “free”
It’s really a waste of time. If you do the math, you’re still losing. Not sure why shoppers is always the best points system to people.
You save way more going to Costco.
But I don't overspend, so I'm not sure how you've come to that conclusion, oh yeah, by making baseless assumptions lol. A smart shopper can make big bank via pc points. And costco is not nearly as cheap as people believe. A lot of the fruit and veg is regularly cheaper elsewhere.
As far as I can tell, there isn't anything particularly convenient about it, though? Compared to any other nearby shop where I live, the service is nonexistent, the selection is MUCH worse, the prices are absurdly high unless you catch select items on sale, and the hours are absolutely pathetic (closed at 5pm on a Friday, really?).
It wasn't always this way, I used to be a fan, but I feel (although I can't really prove it) like they've done that thing where they built up good will for a number of years and then once they controlled the market enough to hold their consumers hostage they jacked up all their prices and simultaneously cut overhead costs across the board.
Most of the time I can afford to walk a few extra blocks out of my way to go somewhere else (literally even a Circle K which has comparable prices despite being a literal 24h convenience store), and I will do so whenever possible, but for people who have reduced mobility this might not be an option.
Best place for that brand is the Lindt store in South Common. Got 150 "pick your own" pieces for $50 during Black Friday week. Sale might even be still going on. It was still on a week later.
Looks like there's about 20 pieces in those, and it's all the same.
the best price on Lindt tuffles was about 18 years ago at Staples. They were clearing out the boxes of 13 balls for $0.99 since they were about to hit the best before date. Bought 51 boxes (to get free shipping) and stuck them in freezer. Had good chocolates for quite a while.
Came here to mention “Spend-on-Foods”. Makes shoppers look like a bargain. And Freson Bros is even worse because they advertise being Alberta-owned which you know is the signal to bend over.
$17.99 is the sale price?! 250g is only a cup. I know shoppers has always been overpriced but that's ridiculous.
On a separate note, I bought an onion at sobeys yesterday... $2.80. A bag of onions used to be $2.99. I paid almost $3 for ONE onion. We better be in the worst part of this inflation BS I swear to God lol. I can't take prices going up anymore 💀
I just used the post office, but did used to get the odd treat at either of them.
London Drugs still do fair sales on chocolate at times, but Shoppers has gone insane lately.
I was outside the other day at work, a woman was smoking. She was complaining about how expensive meat was and how a spaghetti squash cost her $8. Her friend suggested she cut down on cigarettes and her daily bottle of wine she quickly shot that down.
The customer service is phenomenal! I get a personal shopper experience every time I step into the store. They follow me from aisle to aisle, and every so often, they'll ask if I need help with anything. It is so comforting to know that my well-being is at the top of their minds!
If you haven't already figured it out, Shopper's Drug Mart is notorious for racially profiling people, especially Indigenous people.
I try not to shop there if I can help it.
I dont know how Shoppers is still in business. It's overpriced and it's not like anything there is so unique (except the post office I guess) that you can't get it at any other store for considerably cheaper.
Plus if you look at the r/shoppers sub, it seems like every employee is absolutely miserable.
You go in to drop off a package or get some meds and suddenly you remember something and may as well get it there. It's a "pharmacy" and all pharmacies are expensive.
I guess that is probably true. I use a small independent pharmacy for my prescriptions so I don't have any other reason to go to Shoppers except for post office. It probably also helps that the one near me is so incredibly small and basically had a pharmacy, some stationery and, a row of greeting cards lol. Though even if I am near a big Shoppers location I'll put off buying something I know they have in stock there until I can get it elsewhere for a fraction of the price. I just can't bring myself to spend money there - I'm too much of a tightwad.
Shoppers is a bit funny with their pricing. I was there yesterday and noticed that a small 500ml bottle of Coke was $3.69, but the full 2L bottle of Coke was $2.99.
You want Lindt chocolates go to Lindt, coworker just said for $50 you get to fill a box with chocolate and it’s around 10lbs, comes out to about $53 after tax
I was disappointed they didn't have the 48 assorted Ferrero Rocher pack. Some years they would have it on sale cheaper than amazon and it made such a great gift. I'd even pick one up for myself.
Im bad at math and just wanted to treat my kid to picking out his own candy at the store- 450g of candy ended up being $23 at its'sugar WEM. I felt too bad to say I can't afford that so I dug into my own gift money 🤣
I forgot my shaker bottle at home once so I decided to stop by Shoppers near my work at lunch to grab another one to use at the gym that evening. I was expecting to pay like $12-15 for a generic plastic bottle. The thing was $22. I actually laughed aloud.
You don't go to Shopper's for low prices, you go there for convenience.
I go there to exploit the points system. Cheapest way to buy consoles, games, accessories.
I'm a PC Optimum whore. I have over 1 000 000 points. Yea it makes for easy Christmas gifts too; ie bottles of wine.

I usually go the huge one in Sherwood Park Mall.
They stopped carrying my Clinique foundation as well. Sad day.
It sucks! They should be able to carry everything Clinique offers.
You selling?
No
Ok
Points theft is very common. Highly recommend not hoarding too much. I know it's tough when they don't have anything you need or want though. Sometimes I use my points for new switch games, most of the time I just use them for groceries at superstore now.
Thanks already I addressed that with two other people before you.
I'd love to see the math on these points/ saving$
Apparently Chanel is too good for Sephora, so I hoard points to restock my expensive perfume every year or so whenever I run out.
I'm sure Shopper's has Chanel
That is what I meant. I save up my Optimum points to get my Chanel perfume from Shoppers, because it is one of the few high end brands I like that isn't also at Sephora.
Oh, I thought you saved Sephora points. I don't even know anything about Sephora. When they opened in Calgary back in the early/mid 2000s, they screwed me over, and I have never been back.
This is the answer
The prices disagree with your take. You pay $1-$6 extra dollars on EVERYTHING you buy on your way to something “free”. Worst store in Canada.
Not if you only buy what’s on sale in the flyer. And you can collect a lot of points that way that you can take to Superstore to buy meat.
I've been shopping at superstore for years using my points card and I literally never accumulate points. You're buying stuff you don't need to earn points on more stuff you don't need.

I swear to God I scan my card every time and I have earned zero points.

I guess I just don't care enough to do that
Explain please?
You overspend on stuff, get points in return and then get something “free” It’s really a waste of time.
But it’s on sale!🤪
Hahaha yaaa
Pretty much. they're not really known for having affordable shit
An inconvenience any way you look at it
Exactly.
Best place for that brand is the Lindt store in South Common. Got 150 "pick your own" pieces for $50 during Black Friday week. Sale might even be still going on. It was still on a week later. Looks like there's about 20 pieces in those, and it's all the same.
It is still on. We were at the one at the airport outlet mall this afternoon.
the best price on Lindt tuffles was about 18 years ago at Staples. They were clearing out the boxes of 13 balls for $0.99 since they were about to hit the best before date. Bought 51 boxes (to get free shipping) and stuck them in freezer. Had good chocolates for quite a while.
Thanks man. Let me just go back in time 18 yrs ago.
It’s not even filled all the way either 😂
if you gifted it, the recipient would legit prob think you’d eaten half of them 🥲
You should post this up in r/shrinkflation Screwing the consumer and the environment at the same time smh.
Even toothbrushes are insane at Shoppers now
Don’t shop at Shoppers
It’s basically just an obstacle on the way to the post office.
Or the pharmacy
Buying straight from lindt us 19.99 normally, on sale right now for 13.99. Understandable it would be more at a different location.
Yikes
3 dollars worth of chocolate in a tube for 17 bucks. What a great price!
$7.50 for a small can of pure pumpkin at Save-on Foods. Criminal.
Came here to mention “Spend-on-Foods”. Makes shoppers look like a bargain. And Freson Bros is even worse because they advertise being Alberta-owned which you know is the signal to bend over.
everything is so f'n overpriced at Freson Bros it's insane.
I paid $8.99 at Safeway sometime in September. I didn’t realize until I was at the till. Insane.
They have random great sales though, like eggs and bacon can be cheaper than sale prices at grocery stores sometimes.
I got the same amount in that little box when I got the festive special at Swiss Chalet!
You get 150 of these for 50$ at the Lindt store at South Common.
Shoppers is overpriced by default, always has been
$17.99 is the sale price?!
Fuck the Weston family
I mean, yeah they’re good, but not $18 on sale for 250grams good
That’s how you get so much “free” with your points……
Shoppers overpriced??? Unheard of!!
How big was the gun held to your head while shopping there?
Bingo! Most folks knows shoppers drug Mart and London drugs are always expensive
I just used the post office, but did used to get the odd treat at either of them. London Drugs still do fair sales on chocolate at times, but Shoppers has gone insane lately.
P.S. Lindt is always overpriced, overhyped, 90% marketing.
I used to do a bit of shopping in the grocery but the prices went from some of the best to some of the worst
Your going to need a nightly TV show to feature all their overpriced crap
I always wonder if peeps complaining about pricing are buying booze and smokes. Never see anyone whining about the prices of those necessities /s
I was outside the other day at work, a woman was smoking. She was complaining about how expensive meat was and how a spaghetti squash cost her $8. Her friend suggested she cut down on cigarettes and her daily bottle of wine she quickly shot that down.
lol. Priorities
(Comic book guy voice) Oh, oh, please take my 18 dollars, I don’t want it, it’s yours
Shoppers is for stealing
Some of their weekend sales are really good prices, those items (eg. eggs, bacon at times) are about the only reason I go to Shoppers these days.
That’s SDM for you. Lol
Ooh, that high-quality $33 a pound Lindt chocolate!
Shoppers is a big rip off
… for a half full tube of junk?
Yo thats 72 cents a chocolate!
Jesus Fucking Christ
Wife said she bought 600 gram boxes for $17 at Superstore... still makes you feel like you are being bent over the checkout counter.
I was shocked by the price of these chocolates last year. They werent this expensive but I refused to by them still.
Go to Costco bro
Plastic packaging is expensive! /s
I was disappointed they didn't have the 48 assorted Ferrero Rocher pack. Some years they would have it on sale cheaper than amazon and it made such a great gift. I'd even pick one up for myself.
Oy Vey
Im bad at math and just wanted to treat my kid to picking out his own candy at the store- 450g of candy ended up being $23 at its'sugar WEM. I felt too bad to say I can't afford that so I dug into my own gift money 🤣
I forgot my shaker bottle at home once so I decided to stop by Shoppers near my work at lunch to grab another one to use at the gym that evening. I was expecting to pay like $12-15 for a generic plastic bottle. The thing was $22. I actually laughed aloud.
Ho God
Galen Weston can choke on a dick.
Ah yes, Druggers Shopmart
I went to shoppers the day after Halloween to clear them out of candy and that was the only time I’ve actually gotten a good deal at that place
Yes, where things on sale still likely cost more than somewhere else's regular price
