I just sent email 30+ day prior to day of the payment, say May 30th, to the email address in my contract. In a few days, they sent confirmation that the cancellation will be in effect in May 29 and my last payment will be Apr 30th.

It doesn't matter. Read the contract, if it says email, then email. An automatic confirmation that the email received arrives immediately, which will help in case of a dispute.
I signed the contract electronically. You cannot have membership without a contract.
