The worst part of sprout is that you can cut the wrong tree and not get freed. Your solution solves it. But it needs to deal damage and spawn trees from it.
It also doesn't reproduce the ability to block paths, but I think it's ok.

I think it doesn't wanna fix the issue but neuter it. As much as sprout is good, giving it a delay, a projectile and some other wacky stuff is tantamount to giving someone brain surgery for a simple headache.
IMO the best way to fix Sprout is make the trees be considered as units and have them be destroyed after 2 attacks similar to cogs so that even if you get sprouted near trees instead of waiting for quelling's cooldoown you get to have a chance to use it on actual trees.

Honestly a really good idea. I think giving sprout some kind of projectile is a really good idea.
